Weiss Named iHM NYC Market President. Region senior vice president of  sales for iHeartMedia’s New York group, Bernie Weiss, is appointed market president of iHeartMedia New York City. Weiss will continue to report to iHeartMedia market groups division president Scott Hopeck. At the same time in a corresponding move, director of sales Steve DeLusant takes over for Weiss. Hopeck states, “I’m thrilled to promote both Bernie and Steve. It is especially rewarding to find the best candidates for key leadership roles in your own building. They are extremely knowledgeable about our ever-evolving business and have built their personal brands by accelerating the growth of our iconic stations. I’m confident they will continue to elevate our New York operation to even greater heights.” Weiss remarks, “Listeners continue to crave companionship and advertisers continue to demand ROI – broadcast radio delivers on both fronts. iHeartMedia continues to be one of the most innovative media players, offering the best content and programming for hundreds of millions of listeners. DeLusant was sales manager for several iHM New York City stations and earlier was senior account executive for Emmis Communications, where he specialized in multicultural marketing. Earlier in his career, he was a sales associate for iHeartMedia’s WLTW. In addition to news/talk WOR “The Voice of New York,” iHeartMedia’s New York City cluster consists of market-leading (adult contemporary) WLTW “106.7 Lite FM”; CHR WHTZ “Z-100”; classic rock WAXQ “Q-104.3”; urban contemporary WWPR “Power 105.1”; and rhythmic CHR WKTU.

KABC Resets Its On-Air Lineup. Major changes going into effect January 1 at Cumulus Media Los Angeles news/talk KABC include Jack Armstrong and Joe Getty (“The Armstrong & Getty Show”) slotted in morning drive (6:00 am – 10:00 am). The syndicated duo succeeds locally-originated “The Morning Drive with Jillian Barberie & John Phillips.” Continuing at 10:00 am to 12:00 noon is Larry O’Connor (based from Cumulus Media Washington, DC news/talk WMAL). Aforementioned John Phillips segues solo from morning drive to assume the 12:00 noon – 3:00 pm slot occupied by Dr. Drew Pinsky and Leeann Tweeden (“Dr. Drew Midday Live”). Unchanged is Westwood One’s Ben Shapiro in afternoon drive (3:00 pm – 6:00 pm), but the local 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm “Peter Tilden Show” will give way to Westwood One’s Michael Savage. Thus, displaced by the changes are Jillian Barberie, Dr. Drew Pinsky, Leeann Tweeden, and Peter Tilden. KABC general manager Drew Hayes comments, “KABC has a proud history as one of the first ‘all-talk’ radio stations in the United States. With these great additions to our lineup, KABC will offer our audience even more of the content that they love, featuring outstanding local and nationally recognized talent.” KABC will continue as the flagship for University of Southern California football and basketball. KABC more than doubled (+.4) its 6+ AQH share in three straight upticks (.3 – .4 – .5 – .7, July – August – September – October, Nielsen Audio, 6+) but “790 News-Talk-Evolved” forfeits one-tenth in the November 2019 sweep to .6 (#35 to #38, 6+).

WDAF To Become K.C. Chiefs Flagship in 2020. As part of a multi-year agreement between the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs and Entercom Kansas City, country WDAF “106.5 The Wolf” will become the key station of the 70-station Chiefs Radio Network as of February 16, 2020. Sports talk sibling KCSP “610 Sports Radio” will become the official “broadcast partner” of the Chiefs, with rights to Chiefs programming, including radio broadcast rights to the Chiefs weekly in-season press conference with the club’s head coach (Andy Reid) and a weekly one-on-one interview with the starting quarterback (Patrick Mahomes). In addition, KCSP will broadcast the “Chiefs Kingdom Radio Show” (Monday, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm). Cross-town Cumulus Media classic rock KCFX “101.1 The Fox” has been the team’s flagship since 1990. Entercom regional president/market manager Dave Alpert declares, “We are extremely pleased to enter into this new partnership with the Kansas City Chiefs, one of the NFL’s most well-respected and prestigious organizations. Entercom’s eight-station cluster of music, news and sports talk stations hosted by Kansas City’s leading personalities align with vast digital and podcast opportunities. We will deliver the premium and comprehensive coverage Chiefs Kingdom desires seven days a week, all season long.” Kansas City Chiefs president Mark Donovan comments, “We look forward to partnering with ‘106.5 The Wolf’ and the powerful Entercom family of stations. The ability to bring our game broadcasts and existing weekly radio shows under one roof is a large part of this change, but we are equally excited about creating new content and developing new opportunities for Chiefs fans to engage with their favorite team.” Returning for his 27th season as play-by-play announcer will be Mitch Holthus, who has called a franchise record 426 regular and postseason Kansas City contests.

ESPN Radio Taps Fitz To Succeed Smith. “First and Last” (5:00 am – 6:00 am) host Jason Fitz is selected to replace Stephen A. Smith in ESPN Radio’s 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm (ET) slot. The change is effective next month (1/20) and allows Smith to devote more time to his ESPN TV duties. Smith, however, will make a regular weekly appearance on Fitz’s show, “First Take, Your Take with Jason Fitz,” which will be simulcast on ESPNews. Executive vice president/executive editor of production Norby Williamson states, “Sports fans are passionate and they love spirited debate. Jason will be joined daily by a lineup of experts and sports fans who call in to further the debate and deliver their strong opinions.” Fitz, formerly of country group The Band Perry and a regular on ESPN Radio’s “Golic & Wingo,” comments, “I’m excited to host a show aligned with one of the biggest franchises at ESPN that will let me continue to push the ‘First Take’ topics forward and keep building my relationship with ESPN Radio listeners that means so much to me.” Fitz studied classical violin at The Julliard School. 

PPM Analysis: Sports Talk. Based on data from Nielsen Audio’s November 2019 PPM survey period, TALKERS magazine managing editor Mike Kinosian presents a look at performances in the sports talk format. Roughly half the eligible sports talk panelists improve October 2019 – November 2019 (52%, 6+) while just over one in three falter (37%); the remaining 11% are unchanged from last month. Meanwhile, essentially three of every five qualifying sports talk stations register November 2018 – November 2019 gains (61%, 6+), while one in three (33%) stumble; the remaining 6% are steady from a year ago. The format is #1 in Philadelphia (Entercom’s WIP) and Long Island (Entercom-owned WFAN-FM). See Mike Kinosian’s entire report here.

Director/brand content Scott Mahalick is absorbing those duties on an interim basis. Mulholland previously worked in the market as general manager/director of sales for Crista Ministries contemporary Christian KCMS; general sales manager of Entercom rocker KISW; local sales manager of Sandusky smooth Jazz KWJZ; and she was general sales manager of CBS Radio-owned (now Entercom) Pittsburgh hot AC WBZZ. In addition to KKNW “Alternative Talk 1150 AM,” Hubbard Broadcasting Seattle consists of adult contemporary KRWM “Warm 106.9”; adult standards KIXI “AM 880”; CHR KQMV “MOViN 92.5 – Seattle’s #1 Hit Music Station”; and country KNUC “98.9 The Bull.” ….. After spending the last ten years at Hubbard Broadcasting St. Louis sports talk WXOS “101 ESPN,” program director Chris “Hoss” Neupert departs. Per a Facebook post, he writes, “Well, I’ve written this and deleted it a million times trying to find the most articulate way to say this but as of this week, I am no longer a member of the ‘101 ESPN’ team. Tough to write and see but excited/terrified/anxious/hungry – and a bunch of other emotions – to see the next chapter.” Tommy Mattern, the program director of alternative cluster-mate KPNT “105.7 The Point,” adds WXOS PD duties ….. Radio/Audio nominees for the 2020 Writers Guild awards have been announced. ACCESS MultiRack includes Comrex CrossLock technology, a proprietary suite of tools that solidify connections over IP networks. By sending two identical streams through two separate networks (redundancy mode), or combining the network bandwidth of multiple networks (bonding mode), CrossLock provides a fail-safe in the event the primary network falters. Each of ACCESS MultiRack’s codec instances can deliver and receive four contact closures, as well as transfer ancillary data to the far-end using the serial data channel. Music Radio News and Career Moves. More than a quarter of a million dollars ($257,268) was raised in Entercom Philadelphia classic-hits oldies outlet WOGL’s 18th annual “98.1 WOGL Loves Our Kids Radiothon” to benefit Children’s Miracle Network at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Entercom Philadelphia senior vice president/market manager David Yadgaroff comments, “We are so grateful for WOGL listeners and community members who donated and also very thankful for the volunteers and on-air personalities who contributed their time and talent to help make this year’s radiothon a huge success.” Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia president/chief executive officer Madeline Bell notes, “The hospital programs funded by radiothon donations make a lasting difference in the lives of our patients and their families. Davis will do his morning show from that platform every day next week ….. In its annual “Toys For Tunes” on-air event this past Wednesday (12/4, 6:00 am – 7:00 pm), Hubbard Broadcasting Cincinnati rhythmic hot AC WREW “Mix 94.9” raised over $8,00 for Cincinnati Children’s Child Life Program to ensure that every child staying at the hospital during the holidays receives a new toy. Listener song requests were granted, in exchange for a $20 donation ….. On “Giving Tuesday” (12/3), Mid-West Family Broadcasting Madison (Wisconsin) alternative WRIS “The Resistance Is On 106.7” announced that More Smiles Wisconsin is the recipient of its “Community Awareness Grant” for the coming year. WRIS launched a community awareness grant that will provide a local non-profit with $15,000 in advertising in 2020. Applicants were considered for the grant based on multiple factors including the organization’s history of community service, connection to the community, mission within the community, demonstration of need, population served, and geographic region served. More Smiles Wisconsin is a non-profit that provides access to quality dental care to Medicaid, BadgerCare, and uninsured populations of south central Wisconsin. “The Resistance” hopes to help in their goal of increasing funding and awareness so that they may continue to help a growing number of patients …..  WHHZ “100.5 The Buzz” morning host/music director Kaylan Moody is leaving the Marc Radio Gainesville-Ocala (Florida) alternative outlet in two weeks (12/20). Moody notes, “I am so grateful for all I’ve learned and the opportunities I’ve had, but I am excited to keep growing. I am moving to Nashville to pursue a career in the record label industry. The dream job is radio promotion, but I am excited to take on whatever opportunities may arise to get my foot in the door and to start learning.”

Hubbard to Debut ‘Stalter and Rivers’ Show on ‘101 ESPN St. Louis.’ The mystery of the midday change at Hubbard Radio’s WXOS-FM, St. Louis ‘101 ESPN’ is solved as the company announces “The Turn” host Anthony Stalter is being joined by Jamie Rivers for a new midday show that debuts on Monday (9/9) in the 10:00 am to 2:00 pm slot.  “The Turn” had aired from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, following Kevin Wheeler’s late morning show that was cancelled last week.  (This change pushes the start of the afternoon drive show “The Fast Lane” to 2:00 pm.)  Stalter had been working “The Turn” with former St. Louis Cardinals player Chris Duncan, who left the show in January of this year to focus on his battle with brain cancer.  Rivers is a former St. Louis Blues player and is currently also a personality on FOX Sports Midwest.  Hubbard Radio St. Louis VP and market manager John Kijowski says, “Hubbard Radio St. Louis and ‘101 ESPN’ are excited to launch another live and local show featuring two incredibly talented guys who are connected and engaged with listeners and sports fans across St. Louis.”

Entercom’s RADIO.COM Sports Partners with The Action Network. This content distribution partnership ties together The Action Network – a media company featuring news, information and an app focused on sports betting and fantasy content – with Entercom’s RADIO.COM Sports platform throughout the 2019 football season. Entercom says the partnership will feature unique broadcast content on Entercom’s 35 all-sports stations, as well as digital content on the RADIO.COM Sports Digital Network – the platform’s new all-digital, daily, live, subscription-free sports network.  The company recently announced the launch of “You Better You Bet,” a daily, live sports betting show hosted by Nick Kostos as part of this new native digital content offering.  Entercom president of sports Mike Dee says, “We are committed to make RADIO.COM Sports and our local broadcast stations the #1 destination for fans to access the very best sports betting information available.  Nobody is better at informing the sports bettor in this fast-growing space than The Action Network.  This partnership serves to align their personalities and best-in-class platform with the massive scale of our broadcast portfolio, as well as our new highly targeted sports betting digital programming.  The Action Network’s contributions to further enhance our ‘You Better You Bet’ daily podcast will now take that show to the next level as the premier digital audio destination for sports betting enthusiasts.” As part of the partnership, afternoon drive shows across RADIO.COM Sports stations will feature “The Action Network Daily Flash,” short-duration updates of that evening’s betting odds.  The reports will be delivered on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays throughout the regular season by hosts of “You Better You Bet.”  High-profile contributors from The Action Network will also call into RADIO.COM Sports stations on Thursdays and Fridays throughout the season to discuss sports betting headlines and the latest betting lines for that weekend’s games.

NAB Announces New Training Program for First-Time Managers. Through the NAB Leadership Foundation, an online education series for first-time radio and television station managers, is now available.  The NAB Leadership Foundation says the “First Time Manager Series” uses interactive sessions and provides online resources to help bridge the gaps in management training that can hinder professionals recently promoted to their first supervisory role.  The program empowers rising managers to effectively communicate, delegate and motivate. The five-part curriculum covers all aspects of managerial responsibility, including productive transition habits, continued professional development, and progressive leadership skills. NAB Leadership Foundation president Michelle Duke says, “The NAB Leadership Foundation noticed a gap in training for new managers and responded by developing this program to provide the tools and resources necessary to help them succeed.  The materials are designed to be a continued resource as these future leaders progress in their careers.”

TALKERS News Notes. Public media giant NPR announces John Lansing is named its new CEO, effective in mid-October.  Lansing is a government broadcast and cable television executive who’s been selected by NPR’s corporate board to succeed its current chief, Jarl Mohn.  Lansing has been serving as chief executive of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, operator of Voice of America, Radio and Television Martí, and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.  He tells NPR News, “When I think of NPR and I think of the member stations collectively, I think really of journalism as a public service, not tied to a profit motive.”…..Cumulus Media’s sports talk KBGG-AM, Des Moines “1700 The Champ” is adding the new, Westwood One-syndicated sports talk program, “The Pat McAfee Show,” starring former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee to its lineup.  WWO announced its multi-platform deal with McAfee earlier this week.  The midday sports talk show is fed live daily, 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm ET…..SiriusXM is celebrating the NFL’s 100th season with a new podcast series titled, “The NFL 100 Greatest.”  The podcast is a specially-produced, 20-episode series counting down the greatest NFL memories in five categories – plays, games, characters, game changers, and teams.  It’s produced in conjunction with NFL Films and voiced by longtime NFL broadcaster James Brown…..The Philadelphia Eagles and Entercom helped raise $363,746 for Eagles Autism Challenge Inc. via WIP, Philadelphia’s 2019 Eagles Radiothon.  Eagles fans and SportsRadio 94WIP listeners had the opportunity to bid on exclusive experiences involving their favorite Eagles players and SportsRadio 94WIP radio personalities. All proceeds will benefit Eagles Autism Challenge Inc., the team’s public organization, whose goal is to assist those currently affected by autism as well as future generations by providing the necessary resources to doctors and scientists at leading institutions…..The GCN-syndicated Dr. Daliah Wachs program is added to the program schedule of WVWI-AM, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

Hurricane Dorian Top News/Talk Story for Week of September 2-6. The devastation Hurricane Dorian caused in the Bahamas and its track up the Eastern Seaboard was the most-talked-about story on news/talk radio this week, landing atop the Talkers TenTM.  At #2 this week was U.S.-China relations, the stock market and the economy.  Coming in at #3 was the unrest in Hong Kong, followed by Brexit at #4.  The Talkers TenTM is a weekly chart of the top stories and people discussed on news/talk radio during the week and is the result of ongoing research from TALKERS magazine.  It is published every Friday at Talkers.com.  See this week’s entire chart here.

Yesterday (9/5), was the swan song for Cumulus Media’s KFOG, San Francisco – since 1982 a Bay Area haven for adult album alternative (and, in its last years, alternative rock).  The station said good bye to listeners with a daylong tribute to the music and station personalities that made it an iconic San Francisco station.  Today, the station flipped to an FM simulcast of sports talk KNBR-AM…..A number of station groups are organizing fund-raising efforts to deal with the destruction caused by Hurricane Dorian.  Cox Media Group Miami is partnering with Winn-Dixie locations in Broward and Dade Counties to collect donations for those in the Bahamas. As part of the two-day “CMG Labor of Love Bahamas Relief” event, “99 JAMZ,” “EASY 93.1,” “HITS 97.3,” and “HOT 105” are broadcasting live at Winn-Dixie locations to collect supplies for those affected in the Bahamas…..Beasley Media Group is partnering with the Red Cross in conjunction with the company’s on-going Community of Caring Initiative to support individuals and families directly impacted by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas and the United States.  BMG’s company-wide relief effort across its 65 radio stations invites listeners and advertisers to show their support by making a monetary donation as well as giving blood at their local Red Cross chapters in an effort to help those directly impacted by the hurricane.

Minneapolis

Spoken-Word Formats – When Entercom-owned WCCO (Minnesota Twins) lost one-tenth in July, it halted three consecutive improvements that accounted for a +2.1 (3.3 – 4.8 – 5.2 – 5.4, 6+); however, “News Radio 830” notches a +.6 in August (5.3 – 5.9, 6+) to jump from ninth to sixth. Gaining six-tenths as well in August is iHeartMedia’s KTLK (2.4 – 3.0, #16 to #14, 6+). This time last month, “Twin Cities News Talk AM 1130” curtailed five straight down or flat trends that resulted in a -1.0 (3.3 – 3.3 – 2.8 – 2.6 – 2.4 – 2.3, 6+). Yet another streak involving a Twin Cities news/talk station ended in July when Hubbard Broadcasting’s KTMY notched a +.4, interrupting four straight decreases that led to a net loss of -1.1 (3.4 – 3.2 – 2.9 – 2.7 – 2.3, 6+). Off two-tenths in August (2.7 – 2.5, 6+), “My Talk 107.1” drops from #15 to #17.

Not only is iHeartMedia’s KFXN (Minnesota Vikings) a cumulative +1.4 in four straight up or flat moves (3.9 – 4.1 – 4.1 – 4.3 – 5.3, 6+), “Sports Radio 100.3 K-Fan” cracks the top ten (#11 to #9) with its best 6+-stat (5.3) since “Holiday” 2018’s 5.6. In four successive sweeps without an increase, Hubbard Broadcasting sports talk KSTP-AM “ESPN 1500” has lost two-tenths (.8 – .7 – .7 -.6 – .6, flat at #23, 6+).

Three bumps in a row by KNOW have produced a +2.2 (4.3 – 5.5 – 6.1 – 6.5, 6+) as the Minnesota Public Radio news/talk facility jumps from fourth to third.

Minneapolis Music Formats – Over and above recording a whopping +1.1 (6.3 – 7.4, 6+), Hubbard Broadcasting hot AC KSTP-FM progresses from third to first. This calendar year, “KS-95” has held (or shared) the top spot in January, March, April, June, and August. It has been +1.9 (January); -.8 (February); +.6 (March); +.5 (April); -.8 (May); flat (June); -.4 (July); and +1.1 (August). Ousted from the top spot in June by “KS-95,” iHeartMedia-owned classic hits-oldies outlet KQQL “Kool 108” returned the favor in July, but is now dislodged (again) by KSTP-FM. After racking up a July improvement of nine-tenths, “Kool 108” relinquishes one-half share (7.5 – 7.0, 6+) and segues from first to second. Approximately 54% (-6.8) of KQQL’s 6+ AQH share vanished through four straight negative or flat trends (12.6 – 6.3 – 6.3 – 6.3 – 5.8, 6+) before “Kool 108” logged a +1.0 in May. KQQL cluster-mate/KSTP-FM’s format rival – KTCZ “Cities 97.1” – regresses by nine-tenths (5.1 – 4.2, 6+) and exits the top ten (#10 to #11). Shifts in 2019 for “Cities 97.1” include +1.2 (January) -.5 (February); +.2 (March); +.5 (April); -.2 (May); flat (June); +.6 (July); and -.9 (August). Unchanged at #13, Minnesota Public Radio triple A KCMP “The Current – Great Music Lives Here” is +1.2 via five consecutive positive or neutral trends (2.1- 2.2 – 2.2 – 2.4 – 3.3 – 3.3, 6+), with 3.3 its best 6+-stat since September 2018 (3.3, as well). Up three-tenths in June/July (6.1 – 6.2 – 6.4, 6+), University of Northwestern St. Paul contemporary Christian KTIS-FM “Always Uplifting” falters by nine-tenths to 5.5 (6+) and slumps from second to seventh. In the market’s country tussle, iHeartMedia’s KEEY “K-102,” which was -1.0 in June/July (4.9 – 4.8 – 3.9, 6+) gains three-tenths to 4.2 (#12 to #11, 6+), while Entercom’s KMNB “102.9 The Wolf” is off one-half share in July/August (3.3 – 3.0 – 2.8, #14 to #15, 6+). July’s 3.9 for KEEY “K-102” was its lowest 6+-performance since “Holiday” 2017’s 3.4. KMNB “102.9 The Wolf” lost eight-tenths in four successive down or neutral trends (3.7 – 3.4 – 2.9 – 2.9 – 2.9, 6+), but ended the slide with June’s gain of four-tenths.

San Diego

Spoken-Word Formats – A one-half share increase by iHeartMedia news/talk KOGO “News Radio 600” (4.5 – 5.0, seventh to sixth, 6+) completely erases its combined June/July -.5 (5.0 – 4.8 – 4.5, 6+). “News Radio 600” was +1.0 via three straight increases (4.0 – 4.2 – 4.4 – 5.0, February through May, 6+). Similarly, Tegna news/talk KFMB-AM was an overall -.6 via three consecutive slips (2.5 – 2.3 – 2.0 – 1.9, 6+), but “AM 760” wipes away the deficit with a +.6 to 2.5 (#18 to #16, 6+). The just-concluded slide immediately followed an overall gain of nine-tenths through four successive increases (1.6 – 1.9 – 2.0 – 2.4 – 2.5, 6+). The ultra-consistent December 2018 through August 2019 San Diego topline for iHeartMedia Los Angeles news/talk KFI “AM 640” is: 1.2 – 1.2 – 1.2 – 1.1 – 1.2 -1.0 – 1.1 – 1.0 – 1.2 – 1.3 (#23 to #22, 6+).

After losing one-tenth in back-to-back (June and July) sweeps (2.1 – 2.0 – 1.9, 6+), Entercom-owned KWFN “97.3 The Fan” (Padres) posts a +.3 to 2.2 (6+) but backslides from a three-way logjam at #18 to #19. Advancing from #24 to #23, iHeartMedia’s KLSD “Fox Sports 1360 San Diego’s Sports Station” records a .8 (6+) the fourth time in the last five sweeps (.8 – 1.0 – .8 – .8 – .8, 6+).

A one-tenth increase (5.9 – 6.0, 6+) is sufficient to boost KPBS from third to first. The San Diego State University-owned news/talk facility was an top six months in a row before falling to third in July. KPBS has been -.6 (December 2018); -1.1 (“Holiday” 2018); +2.1 (January 2019); -1.7 (April); +.9 (May); and -.7 (June).

San Diego Music Formats – In six consecutive positive or neutral sweeps, iHeartMedia CHR KHTS “Channel 93.3 – San Diego’s #1 Hit Music Station” is a combined +1.6 (4.3 – 4.8 – 5.5 – 5.5 – 5.5 – 5.6 – 5.9, 6+) and advances from fourth to second. This streak follows a cumulative -2.3 as a result of four straight decreases (6.6 – 6.0 – 4.6 – 4.5 – 4.3, 6+). Replicating July’s one-half share improvement (4.5 – 5.0 – 5.5, 6+), iHeartMedia hot AC KMYI “Star 94.1” pushes from sixth to fifth. This (5.5) is the best 6+-showing for “Star” in more than two years (July 2017, 6.0, 6+). Five straight down or flat trends by Entercom-owned KSON resulted in a  collective -2.0 since February (6.1 – 5.8 – 5.8 – 5.0 – 4.5 – 4.1, 6+) but “103.7 San Diego’s #1 New Country” pulls the plug with a +.1 to 4.2 (flat at #11, 6+). It proves to be a July-only stay at #1 for classic hits-oldies sibling KXSN “Sunny 98.1 – San Diego’s Greatest Hits,” which falls from first to fourth. Sunny was a collective +1.7 in five successive improvements (4.7 – 5.0 – 5.9 – 6.0 – 6.1, 6+), but regresses by seven-tenths to 6.4 (6+). Prior to July 2019, the last time “Sunny” hit #1 was July 2018 (6.2, 6+). Co-owned adult contemporary KYXY, which was a combined +1.7 in June/July (3.5 – 4.2 – 5.2, 6+), surrenders one-half share to 4.7 (fifth to seventh, 6+). July’s 5.2 was its best 6+-showing since “Holiday” 2018’s 8.4. Locked on 1.3 (6+) in June and July, Educational Media Foundation contemporary Christian KARJ “Air 1 – Worship Now” forfeits one-half share to .8 (#23, 6+). Following four consecutive positive or neutral moves that netted a +1.0 (5.0 – 5.2 – 5.2 – 5.5 – 6.0, 6+), Univision Radio regional Mexican KLNV “Que Buena 106.5” falters by two-tenths to 5.8 (second to third, 6+).

Tampa

Spoken-Word Formats – Up a combined six-tenths in July/August (3.0 – 3.4 – 3.6, 6+), after a collective -1.5 in three straight sweeps without an increase (4.5 – 3.6 – 3.0 – 3.0, 6+), iHeartMedia-owned WFLA “970 Tampa Bay’s News Radio” continues at #14. As is the case with WFLA, Cox Media Group news/talk WHPT  improves by two-tenths in August; “102.5 The Bone – Real, Raw, Radio” is +.5 in three straight sweeps without a loss (2.3 – 2.6- 2.6 – 2.8, unchanged at #16, 6+).

Flat at #18, iHeartMedia-owned WDAE “620 Tampa Bay’s Sports Radio” (Rays, Buccaneers) has lost a combined six-tenths in July/August (2.7 – 2.3 – 2.1, 6+).

Even though it regains the three-tenths it lost in July (1.7 – 1.4 – 1.7, 6+), University of South Florida news/talk WUSF remains at #20.

Tampa Music Formats – Logging improvements of seven-tenths each are Radio Training Network contemporary Christian WCIE “The Joy FM” (4.6 – 5.3, seventh to fifth, 6+) and iHeartMedia urban contemporary WBTP “95.7 The Beat” (3.6 – 4.3, #13 to #9, 6+). This is the highest 6+-stat for “The Joy FM” since February 2018 (5.3, as well). WBTP “The Beat” dropped six-tenths in July to its lowest 6+-showing since “Holiday” 2018 (3.6, as well). Prior to losing two-tenths in June, WBTP was +1.3 in seven successive sweeps without a loss (3.1 – 3.2 – 3.6 – 3.7 – 4.2 – 4.2 – 4.3 – 4.4, 6+). Tampa Bay’s (6+) August 2019 adult contemporary share balloons by +1.1, nearly equally divided between Cox Media Group cluster-mates WDUV “Lite Favorites” (8.6 – 9.2, +.6, 6+) and WWRM “Magic 94.9 Tampa Bay’s Best Music” (4.7 – 5.2, +.5, steady at #6, 6+). On top the 84th straight time, WDUV sputtered by seven-tenths in June, directly after a May gain of three-tenths curtailed four straight negative trends that resulted in a -4.7 (13.7 – 11.8 – 11.6 – 10.6 – 9.0, 6+). WDUV’s 13.7 in “Holiday” 2018 is the highest 6+-stat for any Tampa station since its 14.9 in “Holiday” 2015. WWRM “Magic 94.9” plummeted by -1.0 in July to 4.7, its lowest 6+-stat since “Holiday” 2017’s 3.9. In four straight negative or neutral moves (7.5 – 6.6 – 6.6 – 5.7 – 5.1, 6+), co-owned WXGL was a cumulative -2.4 but “107.3 The Eagle – Tampa Bay’s Classic Hits” applies the brakes with a +.3 to 5.4 (steady at #4, 6+). An overall +1.1 via six successive positive or neutral trends (3.6 – 3.9 – 3.9 – 4.0 – 4.1 – 4.2 – 4.7, 6+), Beasley Media Group rhythmic CHR WLLD “Wild 94.1” advances from ninth to seventh. Drifting from the top ten (#5 to #11), iHeartMedia hot AC WMTX “Mix 100.7” is -1.4 in July/August (5.4 – 5.0 – 4.0, 6+), immediately after three straight improvements netted +1.4 (4.0 – 4.3 – 4.4 – 5.4, 6+). In June, “Mix” reached the five-share level (5.4, 6+) for the first time since February 2018’s 5.2. Three straight upticks by Cox Media Group alternative WSUN resulted in a gain of six-tenths (1.9 – 2.0 – 2.1 – 2.5, 6+), but “97-X” forfeits four-tenths to 2.1 (#17 to #18, 6+). The market’s two CHRs are deadlocked at #12. Specifically, Cox Media group’s WPOI “Hot 101.5” is down seven-tenths in three straight sweeps without an increase (4.5 – 4.1 – 4.0 – 3.8, #10 to #12, 6+), while iHeartMedia’s WFLZ “93.3 FLZ” is off one-half share in three consecutive negative or neutral moves (4.3 – 3.8 – 3.8 – 3.8, unchanged at #12, 6+).

Denver

Spoken-Word Formats – As a result of a full-share erosion (5.0 – 4.0, 6+), iHeartMedia news/talk KOA “Colorado’s News, Traffic, & Weather Station” (Rockies, Broncos) fades from the top ten (#5 to #11). After gaining four-tenths in July (1.1 – 1.5, 6+), co-owned KHOW “Talk Radio 630” returns half that increase (1.3, -.2, 6+) and departs the top twenty (#18 to #21). Having logged a .1 (June, 6+) and a .2 (July, 6+), KOA and KHOW cluster-mate KDFD “Freedom 93.7 – Real News, Real Talk” notches an August .8 (#24, 6+).

Off six-tenths in June, Bonneville-owned KKFN “Sports Radio 104.3 The Fan” answers with a combined +1.0 in July/August (2.4 – 2.5 – 3.4, #17 to #15, 6+). While KSE Radio Ventures’ KKSE-FM regains the one-tenth it lost in July (.4 – .3 – .4, 6+), “Attitude Sports Radio 92.5” backslides from #28 to #29.

A combined +1.2 in January/February (6.4 – 7.1 – 7.6, 6+), Colorado Public Radio news/talk KCFR was -1.6 in June (6.2 – 4.6, 6+); +.8 in July (4.6 – 5.4, 6+); and now -.4 in August to 5.1 (fourth to sixth, 6+). In five consecutive down or flat reports, Community Radio for Northern Colorado news/talk KUNC has lost more than 70% (-1.3) of its 6+ AQH-share (1.8 – 1.5 – 1.5 – 1.1 – .8 – .5, #23 to #28, 6+).

Denver Music Formats – At the same time that KSE Radio Ventures’ hot AC KIMN “Mix 100” posts a +1.2 (3.6 – 4.8, 6+) to vault into the top ten (#14 to #7) with its best-ever 6+-stat (4.8) in the PPM-era, Entercom’s similarly-formatted KALC “Alice 105.9” falters by half that magnitude (4.7 – 4.1, -.6, eighth to tenth, 6+). Off one-half share in July, “Mix” was a combined +.8 in May/June (3.3 – 3.7 – 4.1, 6+). This is the 13th time in a row “Alice” is within 4.0 – 4.7 range (6+). In three successive reports without a loss, KSE Radio Ventures’ classic hits-oldies KXKL “Kool 105 – Denver’s Greatest Hits” is a collective +1.0 (4.6 – 4.6 – 4.8 – 5.6, sixth to fourth, 6+). Locked on 5.4 (6+) in May and June and then off six-tenths to 4.8 (6+, July), iHeartMedia-owned   KTCL “Channel 93.3 – Denver’s Modern Rock” posts a +.7 to 5.5 (sixth to fifth, 6+). Not only is Entercom classic rock KQMT +1.5 in five successive positive or neutral moves (4.7 – 5.2 – 5.2 – 5.6 – 5.6 – 6.2, 6+), “99.5 The Mountain” climbs from third to first. This (6.2) is the highest 6+-stat for KQMT in exactly one year (August 2018, 6.6, 6+). After a two-month run at #1, Bonneville-owned KYGO (5.8 – 5.7, -.1, 6+) shifts to third. After netting +1.4 in four straight up or flat trends (4.3 – 4.6 – 5.0 – 5.7 – 5.7, 6+), country KYGO regressed by seven-tenths in May only to post a +1.0 in June to 6.0, its highest 6+-stat since September 2018 (6.0, as well). Via three straight spikes, iHeartMedia’s similarly-formatted KWBL racked up a +1.7 (2.0 – 3.1 – 3.2 – 3.7, 6+), but “106.7 The Bull” is off two-tenths to 3.5 (#13 to #14, 6+). July’s 3.7 was KWBL’s highest 6+-stat since it switched to country in mid-December 2017. Up six-tenths in addition to aforementioned “The Mountain” is iHeartMedia triple A KBCO “97.3 World Class Rock” (4.8, tenth to seventh, 6+), which was a combined -1.0 in June/July (5.2 – 4.4 – 4.2, 6+). Entercom rhythmic CHR KQKS “KS-107.5” is -1.3 in four straight down or flat moves (4.6 – 4.6 – 4.2 – 4.0 – 3.3, #12 to #16, 6+), while iHeartMedia CHR KPTT “95.7 The Party” has lost eight-tenths in three reports in succession without an increase (4.4 – 4.3 – 4.2 – 3.6, #10 to #12, 6+). Positive or neutral February through July for a net gain of (just) one-tenth, Entercom classic hits-oldies KEZW “EZ-1430 Timeless Music” surrenders that one-tenth in August (.7 – .6, #25 to #27, 6+).

Baltimore

Spoken-Word Formats – A combined -1.0 in June/July (2.8 – 2.1 – 1.8, 6+), Hearst Television’s news/talk WBAL “News Radio – Expect More” (Ravens) notches a +.4 to 2.2 (#15 to #12, 6+). When similarly-formatted independent news/talk WCBM “680 Stimulating Talk – Breaking News” posted a one-half share increase in July, it suspended five straight sweeps without an increase that led to -1.9 (3.4 – 3.4 – 3.1 – 3.0 – 2.2 – 1.5, 6+). WCBM, however, regresses by six-tenths in August (2.0 – 1.4, #13 to #17, 6+). Cumulus Media Washington, DC news/talk WMAL is down two-tenths (.3 – .1, #31 to #30, 6+).

With an April 2019 through August 2019 topline of 4.4 – 4.5 – 4.4 – 4.8 – 4.5 (6+), Entercom sports talk WJZ-FM “105.7 The Fan” (Orioles) slips from seventh to eighth.

Down a combined eight-tenths in June/July (1.9 – 1.4 – 1.1, 6+), co-owned business news WDCH is up three-tenths to 1.4 (#19 to #17, 6+).

Substituting July’s -.7 with an August +.7 (3.3 – 2.6 – 3.3, 6+), Your Public Radio news/talk WYPR “88.1 Your NPR News Station” continues at #11. Its internet stream, which logged a July .5 (6+), is unlisted in August. For the fourth time in the last five sweeps, American University-owned news/talk WAMU records a 1.2 (1.2 – 1.1 – 1.2 – 1.2 – 1.2, #18 to #19, 6+).

Baltimore Music Formats – Five straight reports without an increase by Shamrock Communications-owned WZBA resulted in an overall -2.3 (6.2 – 5.8 – 5.6 – 5.3 – 5.3 – 3.9, 6+) but “100.7 The Bay – Baltimore’s Classic Rock Station” applies the brakes with a +.6 to 4.5 (ninth to eighth, 6+). Prior to July, the last time “The Bay” slipped below a four-share (6+) was February 2018 (3.8). Also improving by six-tenths in August is Radio One Washington, DC urban contemporary WKYS, which actually gains seven-tenths in three consecutive positive or neutral moves (1.0 – 1.0 – 1.1 – 1.7, #19 to #16, 6+). Tacking on one-half share to July’s +.4 (5.8 – 6.2 – 6.7, 6+), iHeartMedia’s WPOC “93.1 Today’s Best Country” repeats at #3. Entering the July sweep, WPOC lost one-half share in four straight down or flat moves (6.3 – 5.9 – 5.9 – 5.8 – 5.8, 6+). Off two-tenths in three successive negative or flat reports (2.0 – 1.9 – 1.9 – 1.8, 6+), alternative sibling WWDC “DC-101” posts a +.1 to 1.9 (#15 to #14, 6+). Co-owned CHR WZFT “Z-104.3 Baltimore’s #1 Hit Music Station,” which was -1.0 in five sweeps in a row without an increase (4.6 – 4.3 – 4.3 – 4.2 – 3.9 – 3.6, 6+), adds one-tenth to 3.7 (unchanged at #10, 6+). Notwithstanding it drops three-tenths to 8.8 (6+), Radio One urban AC WWIN-FM “Magic 95.9” is #1 the third month in succession. A combined +1.8 in June/July (7.3 – 8.1 – 9.1, 6+), “Magic” reached the nine-share level (9.1, 6+, July) for the first time since January’s 9.0. After being an overall -1.8 in three down or flat moves in a row (9.8 – 8.8 – 8.0 – 8.0, 6+), co-owned urban contemporary WERQ “92 Q Jams” rebounds with a +.4 to 8.4 (6+) and carries on in the runner-up slot. April’s 9.8 marked the first time WERQ reached the nine-share level (6+) since July 2016’s 9.2. Entercom gospel WLIF-HD2 doubled (+1.0) its 6+ AQH-share in three straight gains (1.0 – 1.2 – 1.5 – 2.0, 6+), but surrenders one-tenth in August to 1.9 (flat at #14, 6+). Up or flat February through July for a net gain of one-tenth (.7 – .7 – .7 – .8 – .8 – .8, 6+), iHeartMedia’s WMZQ “98.7 Today’s Best Country” forfeits four-tenths to .4 (#27, 6+). This is the 13th sweep in a row that Peter and John Radio Fellowship contemporary Christian WRBS-FM is unlisted; “95.1 Shine FM – Baltimore’s Positive Hits Station” was #13 in August 2018 (2.6, 6+).

St. Louis

 Spoken-Word Formats – Although repeating at #7, Entercom news/talk KMOX “The Voice of St. Louis” (Cardinals) is an overall -2.3 in four successive losses (7.3 – 6.6 – 6.2 – 5.2 – 5.0, 6+); KMOX posted a +2.2 in April. After playing an April through July ping pong game (2.1 – 2.3 – 2.1 – 2.3, 6+), co-owned KFTK “FM News Talk 97.1” breaks out a half-share increase to 2.8, its highest 6+ showing since November 2018 (1.8, as well)  and continues at #18.

Bouncing back from July’s -.6 with an August +.2 (3.7 – 3.1 – 3.3, 6+), Hubbard Broadcasting sports talk WXOS “101 Sports” progresses from #17 to #16.

Repeating at #15, University of Missouri news/talk KWMU has a March through August topline of 3.7 – 3.2 – 3.3 – 3.3 – 3.7 – 3.7 (6+).

St. Louis Music Formats – Hauling out a +.9 (5.9 – 6.8, 6+), iHeartMedia classic hits-oldies KLOU “103.3 St. Louis’ Greatest Hits” marches from fourth to second with its best 6+-stat since March (6.8, as well). A combined -1.3 in June/July (5.1 – 3.9 – 3.8, 6+), Entercom CHR KNOU “Now 96.3” cuts that deficit roughly in half with a +.7 to 4.5 (#14 to #11, 6+). On a seesaw, iHeartMedia’s KSD “93.7 The Bull – #1 For New Country” regressed by seven-tenths in May; improved by one-half share in June; dropped two-tenths in July; and adds one-half share in August (4.5 – 5.0, 6+), jumping from tenth to seventh. Portland Music Formats – Logging increases of seven-tenths each are Salem Media Group contemporary Christian KFIS “104.1 The Fish” (4.4 – 5.1 – sixth to fifth, 6+) and All Classical Public Media’s KQAC “All Classical Portland” (2.5 – 3.2, #17 to #15, 6+). When “The Fish” picked up four-tenths in July, it ended three consecutive down or flat trends that led to a loss of nine-tenths (4.9 – 4.9 – 4.3 – 4.0, 6+). Likewise, KQAC this time last month posted a half-share increase that suspended five consecutive down or flat moves that resulted in a -2.4 (4.4 – 4.4 – 3.7 – 2.6 – 2.3 – 2.0, 6+). Its July increase pulled the plug on four consecutive down or flat trends that accounted for a -1.4 (3.4 – 2.9 – 2.8 – 2.4 – 2.0, 6+). At the same time as Beasley Media Group’s WSOC “103.7 Country’s Hottest Hits” notches a +.8 (6.0 – 6.8, sixth to second, 6+), iHeartMedia’s WKKT “96.9 The Kat – Charlotte’s #1 for New Country” regresses by six-tenths (6.0, second to fourth, 6+). Spoken-Word Formats – Adding six-tenths to July’s +.7 (4.3 – 5.0 – 5.6, 6+), iHeartMedia-owned WOAI “News Radio 1200 – San Antonio’s News, Traffic, & Weather” leaps from fifth to third. Up until April when it logged a 5.3, WOAI hadn’t reached the five-share level (6+) since August 2016’s 5.2. After losing exactly one-tenth three months in a row (1.5 – 1.4 – 1.3 – 1.2, 6+), Alpha Media news/talk KTSA “Stay Connected” (#24 to #21) erupts with a +.6 to 1.8, its best 6+-showing since June 2018 (1.8, as well).

For the past two months, iHeartMedia’s KTKR “Ticket 760 – San Antonio’s Sports Station” and Alpha Media’s KZDC “ESPN San Antonio” have been tied (#32 in June and #30 in July). They aren’t deadlocked in August though as “The Ticket” is up two-tenths (.3 – .5, flat at #30, 6+), while KZDC is down one-tenth (.3 – .2, #30 to #33, 6+).

Forfeiting the three-tenths it gained in July (3.0 – 3.3 – 3.0, 6+), Texas Public Radio news/talk KSTX slips from #12 to #15.

San Antonio Music Formats – In mid-April, Univision Radio transitioned Tejano KXTN to rhythmic hot AC KVBH “The Vibe,” which is +1.0 in three spikes in a row (2.0 – 2.1 – 2.7 – 3.0, #16 to #15, 6+). June’s +.1 curtailed four consecutive negative or neutral moves that accounted for an overall -1.4 (3.4 – 3.1 – 3.1 – 2.9 – 2.0, 6+). Substantial alternating ups/down continue for Educational Media Foundation contemporary Christian KZLV. In the last five ratings periods, San Antonio’s version of “Positive & Encouraging K-Love” has been +.5 (April); -1.0 (May); +1.5 (June); -1.2 (July); and now +.7 in August (2.7 – 3.4, #16 to #12, 6+). Conversely, co-owned/similarly-formatted KZAR “Air 1 – Worship Now” surrenders six-tenths (2.0 – 1.4, #21 to #23, 6+). When iHeartMedia CHR KXXM faltered in July by seven-tenths to 3.1 (6+), it suspended four consecutive up or flat trends that accounted for an overall gain of four-tenths (3.4 – 3.6 – 3.6 – 3.8 – 3.8, 6+). In August, “96.1 Now” bounces back with a +.6 to 3.7 (#14 to #11, 6+); July’s 3.1 was its lowest 6+-stat since December 2018 (3.1, as well). Notwithstanding it is an overall -1.8 in three setbacks in succession (8.5 – 8.2 – 7.1 – 6.7, 6+), Cox Media Group classic hits-oldies KONO-FM “101.1 San Antonio’s Greatest Hits” is #1 the sixth month in a row. Whereas May’s 8.5 is its highest 6+-stat since September 2018’s 8.8, August’s 6.7 (6+) is its lowest since “Holiday” 2018’s 6.0 (6+). “San Antonio’s Greatest Hits” had been the runner-up five successive times before progressing to #1 in March. On the heels of July’s jump of eight-tenths, iHeartMedia Spanish contemporary KZEP “104.5 Latino Hits” has it completely wiped away (2.7, -.8, 6+), drifting from #11 to #17. August’s decrease ends three consecutive improvements that yielded a +1.4 (2.1 – 2.4 – 2.7 – 3.5, 6+). Prior to July 2019’s 3.5 (6+), “Latino Hits” last reached the three-share level in July 2018 (3.1, 6+). In addition to KZEP, Cox Media Group-owned KISS “Rocks San Antonio” stumbles by eight-tenths in August (to 4.7, third to fifth, 6+), thus erasing the eight-tenths it netted via three consecutive up or flat trends (4.7 – 4.7 – 5.2 – 5.5, 6+). KISS cluster-mate KCYY “Y-100 San Antonio’s New Country Leader” and iHeartMedia’s KAJA “KJ-97 San Antonio’s #1 Country Station” both showed June decreases of two-tenths as well as July losses of one-half share. Anderssen Adds Atlanta Duties at WSB-AM. Continuing as Cox Media Group’s news, talk, and sports format coordinator, Drew Anderssen is appointed senior operations/program manager for the company’s Atlanta news/talk outlet, WSB-AM. Director of branding and programming Pete Spriggs notes, “Drew and I have worked in lockstep for the last five years as format leaders for all of our outstanding Cox Media Group news/talk stations. He brings an overwhelming amount of experience and passion and I look forward to continuing our partnership to ensure [WSB-AM] remains a dominant leader in the radio space.” Anderssen comments that WSB-AM is “one of America’s strongest and most iconic radio stations. It has been a career-long dream of mine to become part of this award-winning team. I am thrilled to work one-on-one with Pete Spriggs and the entire team to help shape the future of the WSB brand.” Anderssen previously oversaw programming, news, digital, and social media planning as OM/PD at co-owned WDBO-FM, Orlando. Thrall To Call Some Reds Ballgames. Seven-year Pensacola Blue Wahoos play-by-play announcer Tommy Thrall bumps up from the Double A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds to “the show,” joining the Reds’ broadcast team on iHeartMedia news/talk WLW and the Reds’ radio network. After 45 years of calling Reds’ games, Marty Brennaman will be retiring after this season; Jeff Brantley will continue working alongside Brennaman as color analyst. Reds senior vice president of business operations Karen Forgus notes, “Tommy Thrall was added to our broadcast staff for 2019 as our ‘utility’ broadcaster. His duties will include hosting the ‘Reds on Radio’ post-game show and producing stories and interviews for the radio pre-game show. Additionally, he will fill-in on play-by-play for the games Marty is not working. We have no plans beyond 2019 at this time.” Blue Wahoos president Jonathan Griffith comments, “We are incredibly proud of Tommy for taking this well-deserved step in his career. Since Opening Day 2012, he has been an invaluable part of our organization and we are grateful for his numerous contributions to ‘Hoosville.’” Thrall and Brantley worked together on three games last September. They are scheduled to call the Reds – Chicago White Sox spring training matchup later this month (2/27).

Applications Now Accepted For Mildred Carter MIW Group Mentoring Program. In its 18th year, this experience pairs up-and-coming women currently working in the radio industry with female professionals recognized as leaders in all aspects of radio broadcasting and media. Beasley Media Group is once again lead sponsor of the initiative for women interested in advancing their careers. Chair of the 2019 Mentoring & Inspiring Women in Radio (MIW) Group’s mentoring committee/Entercom Chicago national sales manager Lindsay Cerajewski states, “This unique initiative provides an amazing opportunity for mentees to gain valuable insight, knowledge, and access to some of the most influential women in radio. Blues Skating To Hubbard St. Louis. Effective with the 2019-2020 National Hockey League season, games of the St. Louis Blues will shift from Entercom news/talk KMOX to Hubbard sports talk WXOS “101 ESPN.” According to Hubbard St. Louis vice president and market manager John Kijowski, “It has always been a dream to partner with the St. Louis Blues organization. The Blues management team is a class act and their fans are the best in professional hockey.” WXOS band content director Chris “Hoss” Neupert adds, “The ‘101 ESPN’ team is excited to be the new home for the St. Louis Blues. Our entire team is looking forward to our partnership with the St. Louis Blues and the opportunity to offer innovative content, exclusive interviews, analysis, and coverage for St. Louis fans.”

RTDNF Tabs Klobuchar As “First Amendment Defender.” This year’s First Amendment Defender award from the Radio Television Digital News Foundation to Minnesota Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar will be presented next month (3/13) in Washington, DC. RTDNF chair Scott Libin comments, “Senator Klobuchar has been a staunch defender of First Amendment freedoms over the years. She has supported cameras in courts; worked to advance government transparency; and pursued protections for the press through oversight, including her questioning of Attorney General-designate William Barr. WBUR’s CitySpace Opens Later This Month. The 8,700-square-foot, high-tech multipurpose facility at The Lavine Broadcast Center officially opens to the public in several weeks (2/28), but Boston mayor Marty Walsh joined executives of Boston University-owned public radio news/talk WBUR for a ribbon cutting at the Commonwealth Avenue site on Wednesday (1/30). WBUR general manager Charles Kravetz comments, “CitySpace will be the home for public conversation in Boston. It brings the best of WBUR and NPR to life – it is a destination where people can come together to engage in civic dialogue, to wrestle with big ideas, to be inspired, to be entertained, and to be educated on topics that impact our community and our lives.” Mayor Walsh notes, “The city of Boston is excited to welcome WBUR’s CitySpace, a convening space that will help bring diverse thinkers, innovators, and performers together to create an inclusive community for all that it serves. Southern California Broadcasters Association Shares Its 2019 “Automotive Overview.” In an ongoing series, the Southern California Broadcasters Association delivers an in-depth analysis of a particular industry or topic directly relevant for its members and the radio industry. This particular report, available on SCBA’s website, “challenges the auto industry’s focus” on non-radio digital platforms by “making a compelling case” for broadcast radio and the influence radio advertising has on today’s car buyers. The overview reveals that “year-over-year vehicle sales have remained essentially flat to down the past four years, highlighting SCBA’s case that media reallocation and a true ROI analysis of current ad spending by the automakers is urgently recommended.” SCBA president Thom Callahan remarks, “Based on factual research, it is our view that broadcast radio is the underrated and undervalued workhorse for the auto industry. Not only will 23% of auto buyers visit a dealership after hearing a radio ad, but one in ten will actually buy a vehicle after hearing a dealer radio ad. The auto industry must reevaluate its dependence on digital since increased digital ad spending has not delivered increased retail sales. Spending 63% of automotive ad budgets with digital is not sustainable.” Previous SCBA reports include topics such as “E-Commerce Basics to Know,” “Consumer Response to Broadcast Radio versus Pandora,” and “Consumer Response to Broadcast Radio versus Digital and Social Media.”

Michael Harrison Addresses South Florida Art CommunityTALKERS publisher Michael Harrison served as special guest speaker addressing a gathering of approximately 70 emerging local artists last evening (1/30) at a workshop titled “The Thriving Art Exchange” at the CJR Fine Art Gallery in Royal Palm Beach, Florida.  The event was presented by the Clark Hulings Fund for Visual Artists and honored the work of Rickie Leiter, publisher of a Palm Beach County-based art industry trade publication, The Rickie Report.  In his speech, Harrison focused on opportunities available to independent artists in the rapidly evolving digital era in both the creative and marketing arenas.  He opened his talk with a humorous anecdote, “The last time I addressed a group of visual artists was when I served as keynote speaker at the first annual convention of the National Association of Cave Wall Painters.”  Harrison said, “It was a time when the standard method of painting was to put colored pigments on your hands and paint directly with your fingers onto the walls of caves.  The big issue that year was what to do about the introduction of a new gadget called the paint brush and whether images created with this new technology were truly ‘art.’”  Harrison concluded, “The argument became a non-issue when the stone tablet was invented shortly thereafter and paintings could be taken to places outside the cave.  That form of disruption was the first example of mobile media!”

 

“PodGOATs” Launches Today. The series of Comworld Media-produced “PodGOATS” podcasts features Cumulus Media Nashville news/talk WWTN “Super Talk 99.7” afternoon drive (3:00 pm – 7:00 pm) host Phil Valentine and his millennial son, Campbell Valentine. The elder Valentine remarks, “I can’t remember having this much fun doing something in a long time,” while recent University of Tennessee graduate Campbell counters, “You can’t remember – period.” The two will discuss everything from their top three picks of events that changed the world to what to do if an electromagnetic pulse took down the electrical grid. They talk spies, conspiracy theories, and anything else in today’s society and culture. Five episodes debut today (2/1) with a new podcast – available on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, TuneIn, – released once a week each Sunday afternoon.

Preparing for its coverage of Super Bowl LIII this Sunday (2/3) when the New England Patriots take on the Los Angeles Rams, the NFL’s exclusive network radio partner – Westwood One – has been interviewing players, coaches, and special guests for their weeknight “Road to Super Bowl LIII” program; “Super Bowl Preview”; and “Super Sunday” shows airing prior to Sunday’s big game in Atlanta. Seen above is the voice of NFL Films, Scott Graham, chatting with New England Patriots tight end Rob “Gronk” Gronkowski. This is the 32nd consecutive year – and 46th time overall – that Westwood One will broadcast the Super Bowl.

CBS News Radio Offers Radio Version of “Intelligence Matters” Podcast. Starting tomorrow (Saturday, 2/2), former CIA deputy director/intelligence analyst and CBS News national security contributor Michael Morell begins hosting a one-hour radio version of the “Intelligence Matters” podcast, which emanates from CBS News’ Washington, D.C bureau. CBS News Radio general manager Craig Swagler notes, “We are delighted to offer Michael Morell’s programs and expertise to our affiliates. Michael’s keen insight into the world of intelligence is a hot topic in today’s fast-moving world. It is the right time to bring his hugely successful podcast to radio audiences everywhere.” Leaders throughout the U.S. intelligence community will discuss national security policy and current events with Morell, a central figure in the most significant U.S. counter-terrorism efforts of the past two decades.

Rockcastle Media Networks’ Radio Nebraska Network Launches Next Monday. The national radio network expands by creating a Rockcastle Regional Networks division, with the Radio Nebraska Network scheduled to deliver its first newscasts via FTP download next Monday (2/4). Rockcastle Media Networks president/chief executive officer Will Sterrett comments, “When we learned the Nebraska Radio Network folded, our thoughts turned to serving those affiliates and listeners with high-quality radio news. We are excited to offer four newscasts each weekday with much more to come down the road.” As is the case with all other Rockcastle Media Networks programming, the Radio Nebraska Network is available on a market-exclusive, 100% self-contained barter basis. SiriusXM Finalizes Pandora Purchase. The $3.5 billion deal (at a ratio of 1.44 new SiriusXM shares for each Pandora share) creates a digital audio entity reaching 100 million North America listeners. The closing comes three days after Pandora stockholders approved the acquisition. The deal was okayed by the Department of Justice approximately six weeks ago (12/21). In a prepared statement, SiriusXM chief executive officer Jim Meyer – who now leads the combined company – notes, “This is a tremendous outcome for two organizations with complementary platforms and large audiences. We could not be more excited to be moving forward as one company. SiriusXM is a subscription-based national service of curated and exclusive content and programming, and Pandora is the largest U.S. streaming music provider with its highly personalized free ad-supported service. This is a powerful platform under one roof for consumers, content creators, and advertisers. We look forward to creating unique audio packages that combine our strengths and offer an even wider range of content to our listeners.” Pandora’s 16-month chief executive officer and Sling TV founder, Roger Lynch, is leaving the company, as are general counsel Steve Bene, chief financial officer Naveen Chopra, and chief human resources officer Kristen Robinson.

Music Radio News and Career Moves. Dallas contemporary Christian KAWA “Uplifting-Upbeat-Real” general manager Tim Dukes is named mid-south regional manager over parent company WAY Media properties in Nashville and Clarksville (Tennessee); Louisville and Bowling Green (Kentucky); and Birmingham and Huntsville (Alabama). WAY-FM Network chief operating officer Lloyd Parker states, “We are excited that Tim has accepted the role and challenge of managing our mid-south region. Tim is respected and uniquely-qualified for this position with his many years of mainstream radio experience, plus his time on the pastoral staff at Gateway Church in Dallas-Fort Worth and as chief operating officer of the Dallas-based Halftime Institute. He’s going to do a great job.” Dukes – who will continue to manage KAWA  until a new general manager is named – remarks, “Joining WAY-FM in 2015 has given me some of the most enjoyable, and certainly the most fulfilling, years of my career. Louisville is my hometown. I went to college in Nashville and started in radio there, so this is an especially exciting appointment to me.” His past programming credits include Chicago’s WLUP and Cincinnati’s WEBN, as well as being director of FM programming for Jacor San Diego ….. Today (2/1) on his syndicated show, Tom Joyner announced the “One More Time Experience” multi-city tour, which begins May 10 in Washington, DC and continues throughout the summer. Late Night Legend Jim Bohannon Renews with Westwood One. Nationally syndicated, late night talk radio legend Jim Bohannon signs a multi-year extension with Westwood One to continue hosting his “The Jim Bohannon Show.”  Westwood One says the show – a “unique mix of topical issues, newsmakers, and pop culture which informs and entertains a loyal audience” – airs on more than 250 affiliate stations.  Bohannon (the self-proclaimed “militant moderate”) says, “I’m honored to be continuing the apex of my career, working with the wonderful professionals at Westwood One.  As ‘The Jim Bohannon Show’ approaches the 26-year mark next month, I promise that we’ll continue to offer the best in news, analysis, and sometimes, just pure fun every weeknight.”  During his career, Bohannon has been the recipient of numerous awards.  He’s been a member of the TALKERS magazine “Heavy Hundred” every year since 1995; he’s been given the RTDNA First Amendment Award; was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2003; and this year won his second prestigious Gold Medal Award from the New York Festivals Radio Awards for the Westwood One News retrospective, “Pain & Pride: Remembering Vietnam – 50 Years Later.”  WWO executive vice president, news and talk Bart Tessler says, “Jim is the gold standard of a talk show host.  I’ve traveled with him on assignment to Moscow and Tokyo and from New York to California and I continue to learn and laugh listening to him nightly.  The evening wouldn’t be the same without the breaking news coverage and perspective from ‘The Jim Bohannon Show.’”

Skyview Networks Enters Sales Partnership with Alpha Media. Radio operator Alpha Media enters into an agreement with Skyview Networks for the company to lead Alpha’s network audio sales efforts, beginning in the New Year.  Skyview has eight sales offices across the country (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Phoenix, and Miami) and Alpha says its stations reach more than 127 million listeners per week.  Skyview EVP/general manager Jeanne-Marie Condo says, “We’re excited to deliver Alpha’s strong network reach to clients.  Alpha has a powerful footprint that delivers key stations, markets, and impressions that will make a difference for agencies.  We are thrilled to partner with Alpha and be part of their amazing success.”  Alpha Media CEO/president Bob Proffitt comments, “We are excited to work with Skyview.  This partnership will allow Alpha to compete in the network arena.  The Skyview team has been very professional, transparent, and aggressive which fits very well with our operating philosophy.”

WXOS-FM, St. Louis Renews ESPN Affiliation. St. Louis sports talker WXOS-FM “101 ESPN” signs a five-year extension with ESPN to continue its affiliation with the sports giant.  The Hubbard Radio sports talker debuted back in 2009 and celebrates its 10th anniversary next month.  The renewal means WXOS will continue to air ESPN Radio programming, including: “Sports Center,” “First and Last,” “Golic and Wingo,” “The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz,” and “Freddie and Fitzsimmons,” in addition to its stable of local shows that air from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.  The station also airs ESPN Radio-produced play-by-play for the NFL, NBA, MLB and NCAA athletics.  WXOS program director Chris “Hoss” Neupert says, “Hubbard Radio management and the ‘101 ESPN’ team want to thank our listeners and the St. Louis community for their continued support over the last 10 years. Our entire team is looking forward to the strengthening of our partnership with the ESPN Radio Network and the opportunity to offer innovative content and exclusive interviews, analysis and coverage for St. Louis’ sports fans.”

Laura Walker to Leave New York Public Radio in March. Non-profit public media organization New York Public Radio operates public radio news/talk WNYC-FM, classical WQXR-FM, the New Jersey Public Radio network and more.  NYPR president Laura Walker– called a “prolific fundraiser” by former NPR CEO Vivian Schiller – announces she’ll leave the organization at the end of March, three months before the end of her contract. According to the story on WNYC.org, Walker became president of NYPR in 1996, as it had just become independent of the city.  Under her leadership, listenership grew exponentially, its budget grew from $1 million per year to $93.7 million and it became an early leader in digital content such as podcasts.  Read the WNYC.org story here.

TALKERS News Notes. The rebuilding in Florida’s panhandle is the subject of a series of reports from CBS News Radio’s correspondent Peter King (pictured at right with students and faculty members of a local school). The news organization says that King spent time in Mexico Beach, Panama City, and Tallahassee speaking with residents, officials, and volunteers ahead of the holiday season.  Short-form reports and long-form, in-depth interviews will be made available on newsfeed every morning and afternoon of next week…..Pictured at left is Bold Gold Media Group general manager Michael G. Stanton taking a shower on Main Street in downtown Honesdale, Pennsylvania for his 17th annual “Shower For Charity.”  Stanton stayed in the show for four hours in nothing but his swim suit until listeners and local businesses helped him meet his goal of raising $20,000 for the Wayne County Children’s Christmas Bureau.  Bold Gold is based in Northeast Pennsylvania operating a number of stations in the Pocono Lake Region.  The station group also held a very successful toy drive to benefit the area’s children in need.  Bold Gold founder and president Vince Benedetto says, “It’s profoundly moving how generous of a community we have in Northeast PA and how much they support our stations’ efforts.  Several years ago, when we made the decision to attempt to do two large fundraising efforts concurrently, we wondered if both could be successful… but our listeners rally every year and the promotions continue to get bigger.  Live, local radio is alive and booming in Northeast PA.”…..At right are two KLIF-AM, Dallas staffers with school officials from Charles Nash Elementary School in Fort Worth holding the ceremonial check for funds donated to the school.  The Cumulus Media news/talk station teamed with Ed Wallace of the Saturday car show “Wheels with Ed Wallace” and Kwik Kar Industries for the 30th Annual KLIF Kids Toy Drive.  Listeners and auto dealerships contributed more than $46,000 for kids at two different schools in Dallas and Fort Worth…..Nationally syndicated talk show host Dr. Daliah Wachs (right) is pictured below with magician Penn Jillette (left) promoting the importance of blood donations via the “13 Bloody Days of Christmas” campaign.

The Robert Mueller-led investigation into possible connections between Trump campaign operatives and Russian agents and Tuesday’s related sentencing hearing for former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn; President Trump orders the swift exit of all U.S. troops from Syria; Vladimir Putin’s annual press conference in which he addressed issues including the threat of nuclear conflict; the Dow drops 350 points and concerns about a recession as the Fed raises interest rates; the battle over funding the U.S.-Mexico border wall and the related short-term spending bill; and the week’s NFL action were some of the most-talked-about stories on news/talk radio yesterday, according to ongoing research from TALKERS magazine.

Music Radio News and Career Moves. Classic hits KONO-FM and oldies KONO-AM, San Antonio director of programming Roger Allen announces he’s retiring from the Cox Media Group duo, effective January 11.  Allen started his radio career right out of high school at KONO-AM in 1981, working in research and weekend overnights.  He worked in markets including Dallas, Austin, and Salt Lake City before returning to KONO-FM in 1998.  Allen comments, “We have an exceptional team at KONO-FM and AM – a group that delivers great content with passion and emotion.  It’s been a humbling experience serving the San Antonio community, the Cox family and our loyal listeners.”  This opens a plum programming position in San Antonio.  If you’re interested, contact CMG regional vice president of radio Rob Babin at Rob.Babin@coxinc.com…..Chicago media maven Robert Feder reports that when iHeartMedia’s adult contemporary WLIT puts the wraps on its holiday programming, it will change its branding from “The Best Variety From the 80’s, 90’s and Now for Chicago!” to “Relaxing Favorites.”…..With the departure of Nancy Stevens from Hubbard Radio’s alternative KDKB, Phoenix “ALT AZ,” operations manager David Moore adds program director duties for that station.  Moore also programs sister stations classic rock KSLX and oldies KAZG-AM.  The station also names afternoon drive personality Dustin Carlson music director…..Radio pro Jenna Tucker joins Cumulus Media Indianapolis to serve as digital director for its country WFMS, classic hits WJJK, and CHR WYRG.  She’ll also host middays on WFMS.  Tucker comes to Indy from her most recent position at Bonneville’s country KNCI, Sacramento where she was midday jock…..Griffin Communications announces that country KVOO, Tulsa adds Amber Glaze to the morning drive program hosted by Marty Young.  The new “VOO Crew with Marty and Amber” launches on January 2.  Young comments, “From the moment I met Amber, I knew that she would bring a dynamic to the show that was amazing.  After working with her for a week, I was sold.  I cannot wait to get to work with Amber every morning on ‘The VOO Crew.’”

KFTK-FM, St. Louis Makes Morning and Early Afternoon Changes. St. Louis news/talker KFTK-FM makes changes to its program schedule after the recent departure of morning personality Jamie AllmanEntercom is operating the station under an LMA as it prepares to close on the purchase of the signal from Emmis.  Entercom moves early afternoon personality Marc Cox into the morning show daypart and bumps up part-time talk host Annie Frey into the 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm slot, taking over for Cox.  Meanwhile, Allman and KFTK-FM are apparently still in disagreement over exactly how they are ending their relationship.  See yesterday’s TALKERS news for more on that. Cox – who has worked in the market as a reporter and anchor at KMOV-TV – has been with KFTK-FM since he took over the early afternoon show from the syndicated Dana Loesch almost two years ago.

Who’s #1 in Boston Sports Talk Mornings? The answer, as Boston Globe journo Chad Finn discovered, is it all depends on exactly how you measure it.  After learning about Tweets from both WEEI-FM and WBZ-FM thanking listeners for making their morning shows – Kirk & Callahan and Toucher & Rich, respectively — # 1 with Men 25-54, Finn wondered how both could be true and did a little investigating.  As you can see in his piece here, Finn concludes, “WEEI includes the share it gets from listeners based in the Boston DMA (designated market area) who tune into Providence-based WVEI because the signal comes in better in certain areas, such as the South Coast.  ‘The Sports Hub’ does not include these numbers when revealing how they fared against each other.”

iHeartMedia Brings Aboard Digital and Social Media Pro Justin Nesci. His title is executive vice president of advanced audio and data revenue.  Justin Nesci previously was SVP for digital sales at Fox Network Group where he managed the national digital sales and marketing responsibilities for Fox Broadcasting, Fox Cable and Fox Sports properties.  He’s been running his consulting practice, J/T/N Advisors, and through that venture has helped top media companies, including iHeartMedia, accelerate revenue generation through emerging digital and social media channels.  In this role, Nesci will be responsible for developing a variety of data-driven, audio strategies across iHeartMedia’s vast array of platforms.  He will help steer SmartAudio, the company’s data infused, cloud-based audio planning and buying platform that allows marketers to bring audience-based buying strategies to iHeartMedia’s robust audio ecosystem.

TALKERS News Notes. WABC, New York talk show host and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa may be an unlikely celebrant of “4/20 Day” – the unofficial day in which pot smokers honor the herb and campaign for marijuana law reform – but because of the plant’s medicinal value for him as a chronic sufferer of severe intestinal issues, he’s on board this year.  The New York Post recently ran a piece on Sliwa’s change in attitude toward marijuana laws.  Sliwa is a card-carrying medical pot patient and he tells the Post that he’s going to be at the new dispensary on Fifth Avenue near Bryant Park today with his documentation in hand.  Read the piece here…..WXOS, St. Louis “101 ESPN” is presenting the fifth annual “Baseball Camp for Kids 2018” baseball clinic event on Sunday, May 6.  Kids ages 6-13 will have the opportunity to participate at The Bud Dome. The station’s Kevin Wheeler and Brad Thompson will be there demonstrating and teaching children the fundamentals of baseball…..Westwood One-syndicated Clark Howard is presenting a special, seven-part series that focuses “on bringing listeners back to Clark Smart basics.”  The series (starting April 25) will feature ways “consumers can save more and spend less on cars, houses, insurance, investing, travel, credit, and monthly bills.”

Patriots Radio Play-by-Play Legend Gil Santos Dies at 80. Long before Bill Belichick and Tom Brady were the most famous names associated with the New England Patriots, radio play-by-play man Gil Santos was one of the most revered among Pats fans.  He died yesterday (4/19) on his birthday at age 80.  The cause of death is unknown.  For 36 seasons, Santos called the games (mostly with Gino Cappelletti as color analyst).  He was enshrined into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2013.   Santos served as the morning drive sports anchor on WBZ-AM, Boston for 38 years. See the Boston Globe’s obit here.

Immediately before that +.9, “Wisconsin’s Radio Station” was without an increase the previous four sweeps for a -2.0 (7.3 – 6.4 – 6.4 – 6.1 – 5.3, 6+). Finishing second for the sixth consecutive survey period, iHeartMedia’s WISN is a combined -.9 in February and March (8.4 – 8.3 – 7.5, 6+), after posting a +1.0 in January. When “News/Talk 1130” dropped one-half share in “Holiday” 2017, it ended five straight gains that yielded a +1.9 (6.0 – 6.1 – 6.7 – 6.8 – 7.0 – 7.9, 6+). Prior to January, the last time WISN reached the eight-share level (6+) was nearly five years ago (8.1, April 2013). This is the 11th report in succession that University of Wisconsin news/talk WUWM is within 2.0 – 2.9 range (2.4 – 2.7, +.3, #15 to #14, 6+). Milwaukee Music Formats – Major ups/downs continue for Saga Communications’ WKLH “96.5 Milwaukee’s Hometown Rock,” which was -.9 in “Holiday” 2017; +.5 in January 2008; -.9 in February (7.2 – 6.3, 6+); and now +1.1 in March (7.4, fourth to third, 6+). “Milwaukee’s Hometown Rock” was an overall +3.0 in four consecutive August through December increases (4.6 – 5.1 – 5.5 –  6.0 – 7.6, 6+). December 2017’s 7.6 marked the first time WKLH reached the seven-share level (6+) since the station reappeared in print more than three years ago (December 2014). In addition to posting a +.6 (8.8 – 9.4, 6+), iHeartMedia classic hits-oldies WRIT “95.7 Big FM – Milwaukee’s Greatest Hits” is #1 for the 37th consecutive ratings period. Prior to January 2018, “Big FM” had been in double-digits (6+) in six of the previous 12 ratings periods; 11.6 in “Holiday” 2017 was its strongest 6+-stat since 14.4 in “Holiday” 2015). Owing to three consecutive sweeps without an increase (7.4 – 4.8 – 4.8 – 4.3, 6+), Milwaukee Radio Alliance adult contemporary WLDB is an overall -3.1; “B-93.3” leaves the top ten (#9 to #11). In three positive spikes in a row (3.6 – 4.5 – 5.0 – 5.4, 6+), iHeartMedia’s WMIL is a cumulative +1.8 as “FM 106.1 – Milwaukee’s Best Country” shifts from eighth to sixth. Also in the market’s top ten is WMIL’s format rival, Scripps’ WKTI “94.5 KTI Country,” which adds four-tenths to February’s +.6 (3.4 – 4.0 – .4, #11 to #9, 6+). Until registering a +.9 in January, “FM 106.1” was a combined -3.2 in five successive downward moves (6.5 – 5.7 – 5.0 – 4.3 – 3.9 – 3.6, 6+). Likewise, February’s +.6 by “KTI Country” suspended six successive down or flat survey periods for a collective -1.4 (4.8 – 4.5 – 4.4 – 4.4 – 4.4 – 3.6 – 3.4, 6+). Immediately in advance of that trending, WKTI posted three straight gains for a collective +1.1 (3.7 – 3.8 – 4.0 – 4.8, 6+).

Nashville

Spoken-Word Formats – Steady at #11, Cumulus Media news/talk WWTN “Super Talk 99.7” is in a repetitive 3.0 – 3.5 – 3.9 – 3.5 sequence (6+). January’s half-share improvement suspended three straight declines that yielded a -2.0 (5.0 – 4.4 – 3.1 – 3.0, 6+). Off two-tenths after February’s -.1 (1.4 – 1.3 – 1.1, 6+), iHeartMedia news/talk WLAC “Talk Radio 1510” is unchanged at #17. Despite dropping two-tenths (3.9 – 3.7, 6+), Cumulus Media sports talk WGFX “104.5 The Zone” climbs from #11 to #10. “The Zone” followed “Holiday” 2017’s -.6 with a January +.9 and a -2.6 in February. Losing the one-tenth it picked up in February (1.9 – 2.0 – 1.9, 6+), Cromwell Group’s similarly-programmed WPRT “102.5 The Game” falls from #15 to #16. In three straight sweeps without a loss (4.0 – 5.0 – 5.3 – 5.3, ninth to eighth, 6+), Nashville Public Radio news/talk/classical hybrid WPLN-FM “NPR News and Classical Music” is a combined +1.3. January’s full-share gain ended three decreases in succession that generated a -2.4 (6.4 – 5.7 – 4.6 – 4.0, 6+). WPLN-FM was +1.2 in October to 6.4, its best 6+-share in the PPM-era.

Nashville Music Formats – It would be quite the understatement that the past few sweeps have been interesting for WLVU. For all practical purposes, the Educational Media Foundation contemporary Christian outlet virtually disappeared from print in January with a -2.6 to .1 (6+); regained roughly one-third of that deficit in February (+.9); and now tacks on a whopping +2.2 in March (1.0 – 3.2, #19 to #14, 6+). In fact, no other station in the 48 PPM-markets had as large of a (6+) February 2018 – March 2018 increase than Nashville’s version of “Positive & Encouraging K-Love.” By adding eight-tenths to February’s +.7 (6.0 – 6.7 – 7.5, 6+), iHeartMedia urban contemporary WUBT “101.1 The Beat – Nashville’s Home for Hip-Hop and R&B” marches from fourth to second. Prior to February, “The Beat” was without an increase the previous five ratings periods for a cumulative -2.5 (8.5 – 7.5 – 7.5 – 6.8 – 6.6 – 6.0, 6+). Following two months at #1, “The Beat” shifted to #2 in November; 8.5 in September was its highest 6+-share since July 2015’s 8.4. An increase of seven-tenths (.2 – .9, 6+) enables TBLC Media Spanish contemporary WNVL “Activa” to enter the top twenty for the first time (#20). Down one-tenth (8.7 – 8.6, 6+), Midwest Communications adult contemporary WJXA repeats at #1. It is a rough ratings period for Nashville’s three FM country players as Cumulus Media’s WKDF “103.3 Nash FM” is -1.2 (4.7 – 3.5, #10 to #11, 6+); iHeartMedia’s WSIX “The Big 98 – Nashville’s #1 for New Country” is -.6 (5.8 – 5.3, flat at #8, 6+); and Cumulus Media’s WSM-FM “95.5 Nash Icon” is -.3 (6.1 – 5.8, unchanged at #6, 6+). Following four straight gains for an overall +1.8 (3.2 – 3.3 – 3.6 – 3.9 – 5.0, 6+), “Nash FM” dropped three-tenths in February. In January, WSIX was +1.1 to end three straight drops that generated a -1.4 (5.5 – 5.1 – 4.9 – 4.1, 6+); “The Big 98” added six-tenths in February. A January and February +1.9 by “Nash Icon” (4.2 – 5.6 – 6.1, 6+) wiped out its -1.7 from December and “Holiday” 2017 (5.9 – 5.6 – 4.2, 6+). Declining by one-half share are iHeartMedia’s WNRQ “105.9 Nashville’s Classic Rock” (7.0 – 6.5, second to fifth, 6+) and Cumulus Media urban AC WQQK “92-Q” (5.6, sixth to seventh, 6+). A -.8 by “Nashville’s Classic Rock” stopped four gains in succession that netted +2.1 (5.7 – 6.0 – 6.7 – 6.9 – 7.8, 6+); January’s 7.8 represents its best 6+-stat since June 2017 (7.8, as well). Immediately prior to March, “92-Q” was +.7 in four straight (modest) uptrends (5.4 – 5.5 – 5.6 – 5.7 – 6.1, 6+).

Providence

Spoken-Word Formats – Steady at #7, Cumulus Media news/talk WPRO-AM adds four-tenths to February’s +.3 (3.9 – 4.2 – 4.6, 6+). When “News Talk 630” lost one-tenth in January, it curtailed four straight upward moves of two-tenths each for a collective +.8 (3.2 – 3.4 – 3.6 – 3.8 – 4.0, 6+). Following a February gain of six-tenths (1.4 – 2.0, 6+), iHeartMedia news/talk WHJJ “Providence’s News, Traffic, and Weather” returns one-third of it but stays at #12 (1.8, -.2, 6+). For the third time in a row, Cumulus Media-owned WPRV “AM 790 Talk & Business” gains one-tenth (.3 – 4. – .5 – .6, #15 to #16, 6+). A cumulative -2.2 in February and March (5.0 – 3.6 – 2.8, 6+), Entercom sports talk WVEI carries on at #8. Leading up to the February sweep, WVEI was an overall +1.8 via three consecutive up or flat trends (3.2 – 3.6 – 3.6 – 5.0, 6+). Once again finishing back-to-back are public news/talkers The Wheeler School’s WELH (flat at 2.3, ninth to tenth, 6+) and WGBH Educational Foundation’s WGBH (flat at 2.2, #10 to #11, 6+).

Providence Music Formats – Logging a nine-tenths increase (5.0 – 5.9, steady at #5, 6+), iHeartMedia classic hits-oldies WWBB “B-101 The 80s and More” is within 5.0 – 5.9 range (6+) for the 12th sweep in succession. As a result of three straight positive spikes (7.2 – 7.4 – 7.5 – 8.3, 6+), Hall Communications’ WCTK “Cat Country 98.1” is a +1.1 and dials up its best 6+-share since July 2017’s 8.4. Substituting February’s -.6 with a March +.7 (2.7 – 2.1 – 2.8, 6+), Red Wolf Broadcasting Spanish tropical WKKB returns to the top ten (#11 to #8). “Latina 100.3” was a cumulative +1.3 in “Holiday” 2017 and January 2018, basically doubling its 6+-share. For more than two years in a row (28 straight ratings periods), the top spot in this Rhode Island market was held by Cumulus Media adult contemporary WWLI “Lite Rock 105.” That consistency changes in calendar year 2018 though as iHeartMedia-owned WHJY “94 HJY Providence’s Home of Rock and Roll” took over in January; “Lite Rock” returned to #1 in February with a +1.3; and WHJY recaptures the crown in March. This particular transition is more a function of “Lite Rock” eroding by -1.1 (10.2 – 9.1, first to second, 6+) than anything else, since WHJY is actually off four-tenths (9.6 – 9.2, second to first, 6+). The 9.6 by WHJY is its best 6+-stat since September 2013 (9.6, as well), while the 12.3 in “Holiday” 2017 was the strongest 6+-share since 18.0 in “Holiday” 2016 for “Lite Rock,” which had been in double-digits (6+) seven sweeps in succession. Prior to October, WWLI was a combined +1.6 as the result of three straight increases (9.8 – 10.0 – 10.8 – 11.4, 6+).

Norfolk – In a very stagnant monthly, five of the 13 listed stations are up from February with an average increase of exactly +.2; seven are down with an average increase of exactly +.3; and one station is flat. Eleven of the 13 Norfolk outlets in print maintain their (6+) February market rank. The exceptions are iHeartMedia urban-rhythmic oldies WHBT “92.1 The Beat” (ninth to eighth) and co-owned alternative WNOH “Alt 105.3” (eighth to ninth). In four straight up or flat trends “The Beat” is +.3 (1.9 – 2.0 – 2.0 – 2.0 – 2.2, 6+), while “Alt 105.3” records the market’s largest (6+) February 2018 – March 2018 fluctuation (2.4 – 1.7, -.7, 6+). Rhythmic hot AC sibling WMOV “Movin’ 107.7” (#10) erodes by -3.9 in three drops in succession (5.0 – 1.6 – 1.3 – 1.1, 6+). An overall +1.1 in three straight upticks (3.5 – 3.8 – 4.4 – 4.6, 6+), Entercom rhythmic CHR WNVZ “Z-104 All the Hits” remains at #6. Its urban AC sibling – WVKL “Smooth R&B from Yesterday & Today” – is down two-tenths (12.3 – 12.1, 6+), but is #1 for the 16th time in a row and registers a 6+-share of 11.0 or higher for the 24th time in the last 25 sweeps. When it logged a 14.6 in November 2017, “Smooth R&B from Yesterday & Today” set the record for highest 6+-performance by any Norfolk station in the PPM-era. The old mark of 14.3 (6+) was recorded by WVKL two months earlier. Before slipping by one-half share in October, WVKL – which earlier was on top for 55 consecutive ratings periods – posted three straight improvements accounting for a +2.4 (11.8 – 12.0 – 13.4 – 13.7 – 14.2, 6+). In the Saga cluster, classic rock WAFX “106.9 The Fox” is +1.7 in three upticks in a row (4.7 – 5.9 – 6.3 – 6.4, #4, 6+), while co-owned adult standards WJOI “1230 AM – Great Songs, Great Memories” is up one-half share in four straight up or flat trends (.2 .3 .4 .4 .7, #13, 6+). At #11, Norfolk State University urban contemporary WNSB “Hot 91.1” is without an increase for the sixth straight time for a -.7 (1.7 – 1.7 – 1.3 – 1.3 – 1.2 – 1.0 – 1.0, 6+), while Hampton University jazz outlet WHOV “Smooth 88.1” has its third downtrend in a row for a -.5 (1.3 – 1.0 – .9 – .8, 6+).

Greensboro

Spoken-Word Formats – Ever since it rolled out a +1.6 in January (4.3 – 5.9, 6+), iHeartMedia news/talk WPTI “94.5 Your News, Talk, & Sports Station” is -.7 in February and now -.6 in March (4.6, sixth to seventh, 6+). An overall +2.2 in five consecutive increases (3.3 – 3.4 – 3.6 – 4.4 – 4.5 – 5.5, 6+), WPTI relinquished more than half that total in December (4.3, -1.2, 6+). Prior to the November 2017 sweep, the last time WPTI reached the five-share level (6+) was in November 2016 with a 5.0. This marks the third uptick in a row by Wake Forest University news/talk WFDD “88.5 Public Radio for the Piedmont” for an overall +.7 (1.7 – 1.9 – 2.2 – 2.5, unchanged at #11, 6+). In “Holiday” 2017, WFDD returned in its entirety the +.6 it gained in November and December (1.7 – 2.1 – 2.3 – 1.7, 6+). Anchored at #13, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill news/talk WUNC surrenders February’s +.2 (.9 – 1.1 – .9, 6+). In three straight (modest) increases Curtis Media Group sports talk WSJS “Triad Sports” quadruples its 6+-share (.2 – .3 – .6 – .8, flat at #14, 6+).

Greensboro Music Formats – Albeit -1.1 (12.1 – 11.0, 6+), Entercom urban AC WQMG “97.1 QMG The Best R&B and Old School” records double-digits (6+) for the 17th sweep in a row and remains at #1. Before slipping to #2 in “Holiday” 2017 with a -1.2, WQMG spent seven straight survey periods on top and had been #1 each month in calendar year 2017 except April and May. Right behind it repeating in the runner-up slot, adult hits sibling WSMW “98.7 Simon Says We Play Everything” (11.4 – 10.4, -1.0, 6+) has been in double-digits (6+) in eight of the last nine sweeps. Following three straight gains that more than quadrupled (+1.3) its 6+-share (.4 – .9 – 1.3 – 1.7, 6+), Baker Family Stations gospel WXRI “Joy FM – Real Music, Real Life” surrenders roughly half that increase (1.0, -.7, flat at #12, 6+). A collective +.7 in three positive moves in a row (2.9 – 3.4 – 3.5 – 3.6, 6+), Curtis Media Group regional Mexican WYMY “La Ley 101.1” forfeits all but one-tenth of it (3.0, eighth to ninth, 6+). It is tied with iHeartMedia-owned rocker WVBZ “105.7 – Man Up,” which is +.1 to 3.0 (tenth to ninth, 6+), thus halting four straight sweeps without an increase that accounted for a -2.0 (4.9 – 3.5 – 3.5 – 3.4 – 2.9, 6+).

West Palm Beach

Spoken-Word Formats – Exiting the top ten (#10 to #11), iHeartMedia news/talk WJNO “1290 The Palm Beaches’ News & Talk” is a collective -1.3 as the result of four straight decreases (3.3 – 2.9 – 2.6 – 2.1 – 2.0, 6+). This comes immediately after three upticks in a row that netted six-tenths (2.7 – 2.9 – 3.1 – 3.3, 6+). Off nine-tenths in four consecutive down or flat trends (2.7 – 2.3 – 2.1- 2.1 – 1.8, 6+), co-owned WZZR “Real Radio 94.3 – Real Talk for the Palm Beaches” also departs the top ten (#10 to #12). WZZR had been +.5 through three straight increases (2.2 – 2.4 – 2.5 – 2.7, 6+). Stuck on 1.3 (6+) in January and February, Alpha Media’s WFTL “News Talk 850” gains two-tenths to 1.5 (#15 to #14, 6+). For the third time in a row Dade County School Board news/talk WLRN posts a 3.2 (flat at #9, 6+). After recording a .3 (6+) three straight times, Alpha Media sports talk WMEN “Sports Radio 640 The Hurricane” falters by two-tenths to .1 (#18 to #19, 6+).

West Palm Beach Music Formats – Owing to four straight improvements (4.2 – 4.4 – 4.7 – 5.2 – 5.9, fourth to third, 6+), Alpha Media urban AC WMBX “X-102.3” is +1.7. In a similar vein, iHeartMedia-owned adult contemporary WOLL “Today’s Kool 105.5” is +2.0 in three consecutive positive spikes (4.9 – 5.4 – 6.4 – 6.9, steady at #2, 6+). The five most recent (6+) fluctuations for “Kool” are +.8 (December); -.6 (“Holiday” 2017); +.5 (January 2018); +1.0 in February; and now +.5 in March. Off one full-share in September to 4.2 – its lowest 6+ showing since 3.9 in July 2011 – “KOOL” regained six-tenths of that decline in October. This (6.9) is the station’s highest 6+-share since 7.5 in July 2016. Elevating by one-half share as well – and adding to its February +.7 – is JVC Media’s WSVU “True Oldies Channel” (1.1 – 1.8 – 2.3, #6+), which cracks the top ten (#13 to #10). On top for the third month in a row is Alpha Media hot AC WRMF “97.9 Variety from the 90s and Now” (10.2 – 9.9, -.3, 6+). In advance of January’s +1.6, WRMF was down or flat in three consecutive ratings periods for a collective -3.0 (11.2 – 11.2 – 8.9 – 8.2, 6+). After 12 consecutive months on top, it dropped to the runner-up slot in “Holiday” 2017. A one-tenth September loss by WRMF pulled the plug on four straight increases that netted +1.6 (9.3 – 9.4 – 9.5 – 10.4 – 10.9, 6+). In the two sweeps following January’s +.9 (4.4 – 5.3, 6+), WAY Media contemporary Christian WAYF “Uplifting-Upbeat-Real” is -1.9 (5.3 – 4.0 – 3.4, seventh to eighth).

Jacksonville

Spoken-Word Formats – Owing to four straight negative trends (9.7 – 8.5 – 7.7 – 7.0 – 6.9, 6+), Cox Media Group news/talk WOKV eroded by -2.8. It wiped out nearly half that margin in January and February (6.9 – 8.1 – 8.2, +1.2, 6+), but now regresses by -.9 to 7.3 (second to fourth, 6+). In “Holiday” 2017, “104.5 – Jacksonville’s News, Weather, and Traffic” recorded its softest 6+-stat since 6.6 in “Holiday” 2016; WOKV was +1.3 in September. A combined +.9 in January and February (2.6 – 3.0 – 3.5, 6+), public news/talk WJCT drops one-tenth to 3.4 (6+) but is steady at #12. January’s +.4 halted five straight down or flat sweeps for a collective -.7 (3.3 – 3.2 – 3.0 – 3.0 – 3.0 – 2.6, 6+). Off one-tenth (.4 – .3, 6+), iHeartMedia’s WFXJ “Sports Radio 930” repeats at #21.

Jacksonville Music Formats – Not only does iHeartMedia urban AC WSOL register a +1.2 with its third increase in succession for an overall +1.7 (3.6 – 4.0 – 4.1 – 5.3, 6+), “V-101.5” enters the top ten (#11 to #6). A whopping -5.7 in four straight decreases (13.6 – 12.3 – 11.0 – 10.6 – 8.2 – 7.9, 6+), co-owned WQIK “99.1 – Jacksonville’s Country” breaks out a +1.1 to 9.0 (6+), vaulting from third to first. On top for 12 ratings periods in succession, WQIK segued to #2 in “Holiday” 2017. A combined -1.8 in July and August (12.2 – 11.6 – 10.4, 6+), WQIK followed with an overall +3.2 in September-October-November (10.4 – 11.7 – 13.6, 6+), with October’s 13.6 its best-ever (6+) PPM-performance. Displaced from the top spot is Renda Broadcasting adult contemporary WEJZ “96.1 Jacksonville’s Official Work Station” (8.3 – 8.1, -.2, first to third, 6+). Before sputtering by -4.3 in January, WEJZ was an overall +5.8 in four straight up trends, practically doubling its 6+ AQH share (6.1 – 6.4 – 6.4 – 9.0 – 11.9, September 2017 through “Holiday” 2017, 6+) and noted its highest 6+-stat since 14.7 in “Holiday” 2016. After cratering by -1.7 in “Holiday” 2017 (8.3 – 6.6, 6+), Cox Media Group classic hits-oldies WJGL “96.9 The Eagle” answers with a combined +1.6 in three straight increases (6.6 – 7.1 – 7.7 – 8.2, 6+), jumping from fourth to second. Its urban AC HD2 channel, however, is off six-tenths (2.9 – 2.3, #13 to #14, 6+). A +1.0 in January enabled WKSL to end three straight losses that produced a -1.2 (4.9 – 4.3 – 3.9 – 3.7, 6+); however, “97.9 Kiss-FM” is a combined -1.2 in February and March (4.7 – 4.2 – 3.5, 6+) as the iHeartMedia CHR exits the top ten (#9 to #11). Co-owned urban contemporary WJBT “93.3 The Beat,” which was +.6 in January and February (4.6 – 4.7 – 5.2, 6+), surrenders all of it (4.6, -.6, seventh to ninth, 6+). Prior to January, “The Beat” was without an increase in four straight sweeps for an overall -.7 (5.3 – 5.2 – 4.9 – 4.6 – 4.6, 6+). Up one-half share in February (1.8 – 2.3, 6+), Cox Media Group urban AC WOKV-HD2 sputters by six-tenths as well (1.7, #15 to #16, 6+), as does Renda Broadcasting’s WGNE “Gator Country 99.9” (5.4 – 4.8, fifth to eighth, 6+).

Memphis

Spoken-Word Formats – Following a -.8 in “Holiday” 2017 and a +.9 in January, iHeartMedia news/talk WREC “600 AM – Memphis’ News, Traffic, & Weather” is a combined -.3 in February and March (3.5 – 3.3 – 3.2, #10 to #11, 6+). Its loss of eight-tenths in “Holiday” 2017 brought to a close five consecutive up or flat moves for an overall +.7 (2.7 – 2.7 – 2.9 – 3.1 – 3.4 – 3.4, 6+); January’s 3.5 is the best 6+-share for WREC since 3.6 in February 2017. Locked on 3.1 (6+) in January and February, Entercom sports talk WMFS gains two-tenths to 3.3 (#11 to #10, 6+). Following four straight increases that accounted for a +1.3 through November (2.0 – 2.2 – 2.6 – 2.9 – 3.3, 6+), “ESPN Sports Radio” was a combined -.8 in December and “Holiday” 2017 (3.3 – 3.1 – 2.5, 6+).

Memphis Music Formats – While unchanged in the runner-up slot, iHeartMedia urban contemporary WHRK “K-97.1 – Memphis’ Only Hip-Hop and R&B” improves by one full-share (8.2 – 9.2, 6+). This (9.2) is the strongest 6+-performance for “K-97.1” since November 2015’s 9.4. It is just one-half share behind urban AC cluster-mate KJMS “V-101” (10.1 – 9.7, -.4, 6+), which is #1 for the third month in a row. “V-101” rebounded from January’s -.6 with a +.7 in February. It departed the top spot in “Holiday” 2017 after four consecutive months there. Following three straight improvements that yielded a +2.1 (9.2 – 10.0 – 10.4 – 11.3, 6+), “V-101” was -1.0 in December. Two other stations in that cluster have streaks snapped. Gospel WHAL “95.7 Halleluiah – Memphis’ Inspiration Station,” which was +2.3 in four upticks in a row (5.0 – 5.4 – 6.2 – 6.6 – 7.3, 6+), is off one-tenth to 7.2 (6+) but stays at #5. Meanwhile, co-owned WDIA “1070 The Heart & Soul of Memphis,” +1.8 as the result of five straight increases (3.9 – 4.1 – 4.4 – 4.7 – 5.0 – 5.7, 6+), drops one-tenth as well (5.6, 6+) and carries on at #6. Having posted a .8 (6+) five times in the last six survey periods (.8 – .7 – .8 – .8 – .8 – .8, 6+), Shelby County Schools’ urban AC WQOX picks up two-tenths to 1.0 (6+) and is anchored at #17.

Hartford

Spoken-Word Formats – Owing to three increases in a row (4.4 – 5.1 – 5.5 – 5.9), Entercom news/talk WTIC-AM is a collective +1.5 and remains at #7. Ironically, “News Talk 1080” just concluded a consecutive string of negative moves in which it was a collective -1.4 (5.8 – 5.6 – 5.0 – 4.4, 6+). This is the third straight up or flat sweep for Connoisseur Media news/talk WDRC-AM “AM 1360 The Talk of Connecticut” (.8 – 1.0 – 1.0 – 1.2, flat at #13, 6+). Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network news/talk WNPR “Connecticut’s Public Media Source for News & Ideas” is down four-tenths (5.9 – 5.5, sixth to eighth, 6+). It followed “Holiday” 2017’s -1.3 with a +.9 in January; 5.0 in “Holiday” 2017 was its lowest 6+-share since August 2017’s 4.7. After being a cumulative +1.1 in three straight gains (1.4 – 1.7 – 2.3 – 2.5, 6+), University of Massachusetts-owned WFCR “New England Public Radio,” which plays a combination of NPR news, classical, and jazz, falters by seven-tenths to 1.8 (#11 to #12). Entering the January 2018 sweep, WFCR was within 1.0 – 1.7 range (6+) in each of the previous 21 ratings periods.

Hartford Music Formats – Bouncing back from a -.2 in February, Entercom adult contemporary WRCH “Lite 100.5” trots out a +1.1 (13.2 – 14.3, 6+) and reaches a milestone for being #1 for the 20th consecutive ratings period. January’s -4.9 halted at six its consecutive string of up or flat trends that yielded a +8.4 (9.9 – 10.2 – 10.2 – 10.3 – 11.0 – 13.0 – 18.3, 6+). This marks the 17th time in the last 19 sweeps – and ninth in succession- that “Lite” is in double-digits (6+). In addition to logging its third straight increase for an overall +1.1 (4.9 – 5.1 – 5.5 – 6.0, seventh to sixth, 6+), iHeartMedia’s WWYZ “Country 92.5” has its best 6+-showing since December 2017’s 6.2. As Red Wolf Broadcasting Spanish tropical WMRQ-HD2 improves for the third time in a row for a +1.1 (1.6 – 1.8 – 2.1 – 2.7, #12 to #11, 6+), co-owned alternative WMRQ-FM “Radio 104.1” regresses by one-half share (3.9 – 3.4, 6+) but remains at #10. Stuck on 7.3 (6+) in January and February, Entercom hot AC WTIC-FM “96.5 TIC – Today’s Best Variety” coughs up six-tenths to 6.7 (6+), segueing from fourth to fifth. Without an increase in each of the last four sweeps (.4 – .4 – .3 – .1 – .1, 6+), Red Wolf Broadcasting classic hits-oldies WNTY “Good Times – Great Oldies – Kool Radio” picks up two-tenths to .3 (#15 to #14, 6+).
