The funding issues facing the U.S. Postal Service and President Trump’s allegation that mail-in voting breeds fraud; the November presidential election and presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s choice of Kamala Harris as his running mate; the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the U.S. and projections for future cases; the debate over opening schools this fall; the ongoing protests in Portland and rise in violent crime in a number of U.S. cities; and the controversy over the Cardi B song “WAP” were some of the most-talked-about stories on news/talk radio over the weekend, according to ongoing research from TALKERS magazine.

WQAM, Miami Re-Vamps Daily Program Schedule. South Florida sports talker WQAM “560 The Joe” announces it’s tweaking its daily lineup, adding ESPN Radio’s “Greeny” with Mike Greenberg in the 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm daypart and is expanding the afternoon drive “Hochman and Crowder” show – hosted by Marc Hochman and Channing Crowder – to 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Entercom South Florida SVP and market manager Keriann Worley says, “With the return of live sports, we aim to give sports fans of South Florida a home for both national headlines and premier coverage of their favorite teams. As he returns to radio, Mike Greenberg is a nationally recognized and trusted voice and we’re delighted to add his show to our already impressive lineup of weekday programming.”
John Fredericks Radio Network Announces New Virginia Digital News Operation. In conjunction with Star News Digital Media, the Virginia based John Fredericks Radio Network is launching The Virginia Star – a new, digital news operation that begins publishing today. John Fredericks is host of the network’s morning drive program and he’s also serving as publisher and editor-in-chief of the news operation. He says, “We are very excited about this new venture: real news in real time. The Virginia Star will be fiercely local in its core news reporting content, augmented with a national flavor and robust commentary section. Like on my radio show, we encourage all voices.” Star executives say they have hired three local, full-time reporters and have contracted with several more on a part-time basis. Fredericks adds, “We are going to cover the stories important to our readers that the fake news refuses to do simply because it doesn’t fit their narrative. At The Virginia Star, we have our own narrative, it’s called the truth.” Star News Digital Media CEO Michael Patrick Leahy says, “The Virginia Star now becomes the fifth state-based news site in the Star News Network, joining The Tennessee Star, The Ohio Star, The Minnesota Sun, and The Michigan Star.” Star News Digital Media chief technology officer Christina Botteri adds, “The Virginia Star is the first affiliate of the Star News Network. We own and operate our four other news sites. We searched the country to find the right organization with the reputation and experience to work with in a fifth state, and the John Fredericks Radio Network in Virginia was hands down the right choice for us. PPM Analysis: Sports Talk. TALKERS magazine managing editor Mike Kinosian presents a look at the performances of radio stations based on data from Nielsen Audio’s July 2020 PPM survey, today focusing on sports talk. As sports leagues begin returning to live play-by-play, America’s sports talk stations are hoping it will translate into improved ratings. During the July 2020 survey, Tegna’s WBNS-FM, Columbus “Sports Radio 97.1 The Fan” was the big gainer, adding seven-tenths to post a 3.6 share. Right behind was Cumulus Media’s KNBR, San Francisco tacking on six-tenths for a 2.5 share finish. Comparing July 2020 to July 2019, the top gainer is iHeartMedia’s KXFN, Minneapolis “K-FAN,” which posts a seven-tenths gain for a 5.0 share. No sports talk station ranked #1 in its market in July – not even close. However, three stations – Beasley Media Group’s WBZ-FM, Boston “98.5 The Sports Hub”; WBNS-FM, Columbus; and KXFN-FM, Minneapolis – tied for ranking #8 in their respective markets. TALKERS News Notes. This month, Premiere Networks is celebrating the 20th anniversary of FOX Sports Radio. Premiere says that it and FOX Sports “have enjoyed a long partnership that kicked off in 2000 with the goal of producing a home for industry-leading talent focused on delivering entertaining, informed and thought-provoking programming for sports fans. FOX Sports Radio launched in August of that year, and the network’s storied 20-year run has developed a loyal following of more than 14 million listeners across more than 500 affiliates nationwide with an unmatched weekday lineup featuring some of the biggest names in sports broadcasting, including Colin Cowherd, Dan Patrick, Clay Travis, Doug Gottlieb, Chris Broussard, Rob Parker, R.J. Bell, Jason Smith, Mike Harmon and Ben Maller.” Premiere SVP of sports programming Don Martin says, “What an amazing accomplishment – 20 years! I’ve been fortunate to be part of the FSR family for the entire run, both as an affiliate and on the management team.”…..San Diego is getting its first taste of “The Mightier 1090” today (8/17) as the Bill Hagen-led station begins operating. XEPRS-AM had been a sports talker as “The Mighty 1090” operated by Broadcast Corporation of the Americas but that organization lost its lease on the Mexican blowtorch last year. Now, ad exec Hagen is re-imagining the station. Times of San Diego reports that former XEPRS sports talk host Scott Kaplan is hosting afternoon drive. The rest of the schedule is: SportsGrid’s “The Morning After” with Ariel Epstein and Jared Smith in morning drive, Rich Eisen from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, two programs hosted by Scott Ferrall, and Tony Bruno in evenings…..ESPN Radio announces that effective today (8/17), personalities Dan LeBatard and Stugotz are presenting new daily podcast-exclusive content. A new digital-only episode will be recorded and posted before their 10:00 am to 12:00 noon ET national radio show. Following the radio program, LeBatard and Stugotz will record more thoughts and ramblings as a digital-only “post-game show.” In addition, each hour of the radio show – as well as their local hour heard in Miami – will continue to be available as podcasts. ESPN Audio VP, digital marketing and strategy Tom Ricks says, “Dan and Stugotz already have a large digital-only audience, and we wanted to better serve that audience with exclusive podcast content. They are a unique show on sports radio and now their podcast listeners will get more unique podcast content each day.”
Michael Harrison Joins Gunhill Road with New Song About Life During Pandemic. Here they come again! Gunhill Road, the legendary album rock band that was a cult favorite of FM radio in the early 70s and then scored a Top 40 AM radio one-off smash in 1973 with “Back When My Hair Was Short” has returned in 2020 with a reworked version of the classic hit. This time the catchy tune has new lyrics that address the coronavirus with a lovingly humorous take on the sacrifices society is making to contain it. Rock enthusiasts might recall that Gunhill Road reunited in 2014 to a packed house at New York’s Bitter End and a brand new double album titled, “Every 40 Years,” which became the subject of a feature film documentary. The long-running ensemble which consists of original members Glenn Leopold, Steve Goldrich, and Paul Reich and new members musician/arranger Brian Koonin and TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison has a new set of songs ready to drop in early 2021. Newsmax TV Adds ‘Stinchfield’ to Nightly Lineup. Four-time Emmy-winning journalist Grant Stinchfield is joining the evening lineup at Newsmax TV, beginning tomorrow (8/18) at 8:00 pm ET. Newsmax says “Stinchfield” is “a full hour of the day’s top news and provocative conversation.” Stinchfield says, “I’m thrilled to be at Newsmax TV. Each night, our viewers can look forward to a compelling mix of up-to-the-second news and compelling discussions with newsmakers and Newsmax TV’s great roster of contributors.” Newsmax Media CEO Christopher Ruddy says, “Grant has an impeccable track record in broadcast journalism with the awards to prove it. He will bring our viewers solid news reports with the insight they can’t find elsewhere.”
Music Radio News and Career Moves. At Townsquare Media’s Albany, New York station group, country WGNA brand manager Matty Jeff is promoted to director of content for the cluster that also includes alternative WQSH, rock WQBK, adult contemporary WPBZ, hip hop WQBK-HD2/W256BU, and sports talk WTMM-FM. Townsquare Albany market president Kevin Rich says, “Matty has programmed WGNA to be a consistent local ratings and online leader and by far the #1 country station in the Capital Region. Having him as my partner in the director of content role will make our locally programmed stations even stronger.”…..Country radio air personality Jessica Cash announces she’s leaving Alpha Media’s WFLS, Fredericksburg, Virginia at the end of this week. She says, “Fourteen years is a long time for someone in our profession to be in one place. I’ve had the good fortune to do that, to hopefully get your day started with a smile. But, now it’s time for me to make a change in my life.” Cash co-hosts the morning drive show with Steve Waters. The duo has won honors over the years, including CMA’s Small Market Morning Show in 2018 and the ACM Small Market Personality in 2019. The station is searching for her replacement…..Condolences to the family and friends of longtime South Florida radio personality Sonny Fox, who passed away on Friday (8/14) in Dunnellon, Florida after an illness at age 73. An obit in the Miami Herald notes that Fox worked at former rock outlet WSHE (now hip hop WMIB), CHR WHYI, oldies WMXJ, and country WKIS.
PPM Analysis: News/Talk. TALKERS magazine managing editor Mike Kinosian presents a look at the performances of radio stations based on data from Nielsen Audio’s January 2020 PPM survey, today focusing on the news/talk format. Coming off the Holiday 2019 survey, 71% of news/talk stations realized a ratings improvement in January, led by iHeartMedia’s KFBK, Sacramento (+2.7) and Emmis Communications’ WIBC-FM (+2.2). Comparing January 2019 to January 2020, 55% of news/talk stations in PPM markets were up, with 37% down and 8% unchanged. Leaders in this group included iHeartMedia’s WOR in the Long Island market (+2.2) and Cox Media Group’s WSB-AM/WSBB-FM, Atlanta (+2.1). Three news/talk stations ranked #1 (weekly, 6+ AQH share) in the January 2020 survey: Cox Media Group’s WSB-AM/WSBB-FM put up a 10.0 share, iHeartMedia’s KFBK, Sacramento notched an 8.6 share, and CMG’s WOKV-FM, Jacksonville garnered a 9.8 share. ESPN to Rep ABC Audio’s Podcast Network. A deal between ABC Audio and ESPN Audio will have the latter’s ad sales team representing ABC Audio’s podcast network. The press release states that this arrangement “by the two business units reflects a strategic collaboration to further grow the podcast business across The Walt Disney Company.” Prior to this announcement, ESPN handled ad sales for podcasts produced by FiveThirtyEight, National Geographic, and its own network. ESPN Audio VP of digital strategy and marketing Tom Ricks says, “Adding ABC Audio’s podcasts under the ESPN Audio sales umbrella will provide advertisers with one-stop shopping, enhancing the value and efficiency they receive from a larger stable of premium and compelling content. We reach complementary audiences – adding even more value for advertisers.” Broadcast network radio sales for ABC Audio are represented by Skyview Networks.
Edison Research: Two-Thirds of American Homes Have at Least One Radio. In advance of the March 19 Infinite Dial webinar, Edison Research and Triton Digital tease that their inquiry into home radio ownership in the U.S. reveals that 68% of American homes have at least one radio. However, just 12 years ago, the mean number of home radios Americans reported owning was three. Back in 2008, just 4% of households reported owning no radio at all; the figure for 2020 is 32% owning no home radio. Edison asks, “What has replaced these radios? Do those who have no radios instead have smart speakers in their homes? Entercom Signs Up with LiveRamp. Broadcaster Entercom announces it has entered into a deal with LiveRamp to become a LiveRamp Destination. Entercom says, “Advertisers and media buyers will now have the ability to find and activate their own audiences interacting with the company’s robust portfolio of audio assets that reach over 170 million consumers monthly. In addition, advertisers will benefit from the company’s full suite of first party data and attribution solutions through Entercom Audience & Attribution platforms.” Entercom VP, data and analytics Dan McKinney says, “As the No. 1 reach medium in America, radio and digital audio should be vital parts of every brand’s media strategy. Audience-based media buyers nationwide who turn to LiveRamp to find and activate their audiences across digital and television publishers will now be able to do so across all audio platforms – from streaming, to podcasts, to over-the-air inventory – giving them over 90% reach in the top 50 markets.” The press release adds that LiveRamp has over 500 integrations with leading platforms in the industry, offering advertisers an omnichannel solution for activating their data. As part of the partnership, Entercom’s portfolio of assets spanning across broadcast radio and digital will be featured among hundreds of leading media and entertainment companies.
Appeals Court Nixes Ref’s Suit Against Kentucky Sports Radio. College basketball referee John Higgins lost his Appeals Court suit against Lexington-based Kentucky Sports Radio and talk hosts Matt Jones and Drew Franklin. Higgins had sued alleging intentional infliction of emotional distress, invasion of privacy, tortious interference with a business relationship, and civil conspiracy. However, the Court ruled against him on First Amendment grounds. Higgins refereed the 2017 Elite Eight game of the NCAA Basketball Tournament between the Kentucky Wildcats and the North Carolina Tar Heels. Kentucky lost a close game and many of its fans blamed Higgins’ refereeing for the loss. Naturally, Kentucky Sports Radio, including Jones and Franklin discussed the loss and Higgins’ role in it. After a fan learned that Higgins owned a roofing company in Omaha, angry Kentucky fans began leaving poor reviews of his business on social media, causing his reviews to plummet from highly positive to very negative and, he says, causing him financial losses. Higgins argued the hosts at KSR were in part to blame for this. The Court’s ruling is interesting, and you can read it here.

The new television talk show starring former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer debuted on Newsmax TV last night (3/3), in time for coverage of Super Tuesday elections. “Spicer & Co.” airs nightly at 6:00 pm from studios near the White House and includes co-host Lindsay Keith…..Genesis Communications Network nationally syndicated talk host Dr. Daliah Wachs is co-sponsor of a Change.org petition to end Daylight Saving Time. Wachs, a board-certified family physician, has talked on her radio program for years about the medical issues that are associated with the semi-annual time changes. See the petition here….. ABC News correspondent Linsey Davis is hosting the 30th annual First Amendment Awards Dinner & Show on March 5 at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, DC, presented by the Radio Television Digital News Foundation. Davis will lead the ceremony in which the RTDNA recognize seven honorees who “represent the valuable role journalists play in local and national media by practicing their constitutionally guaranteed duty to seek and report the truth.” Davis joined ABC News in 2007 and works as a correspondent filing reports for “World News,” “Good Morning America,” “20/20” and “Nightline” as well as an anchor for “Prime” on ABC’s streaming channel, ABC News Live…..As the result of deals with audio play-by-play producers and syndicators ESPN Radio, Westwood One, Compass Media Networks, and Learfield IMG College, SiriusXM is broadcasting games from 26 different NCAA Division I college basketball conference tournaments this postseason, offering live play-by-play of more than 120 men’s and women’s conference tournament games to subscribers. They’ll get games from the ACC, Big East, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12, SEC, and Mountain West conferences, and every game of the Women’s ACC and SEC Tournaments.

Music Radio News and Career Moves. Now it’s confirmed that former longtime KROQ, Los Angeles program director – and most recently SVP of programming for Entercom Los Angeles – Kevin Weatherly is joining Spotify as head of North American programming. Weatherly had been with KROQ for 28 years. He also programmed the company’s adult hits KCBS-FM “93.1 JACK FM” and CHR KAMP “97.1 AMP Radio.”…..The YEA Networks syndicated “Kidd Kraddick Morning Show” is returning to Houston on Radio One’s CHR KROI “RadioNOW 92.1,” effective March 9. The show features Kellie Rasberry, J-Si Chavez, and Big Al Mack, along with recently announced correspondent Jenna Owens. Radio One Top 40 format director Dustin Kross says, “I’m really excited to bring the legendary ‘Kidd Kraddick Morning Show’ back to Houston on ‘RadioNOW 92.1.’ They still have a great streaming presence in Houston from when they were here before. So, I have no doubt they’ll be welcomed with open arms.”
Jay Barker to Host New Regional Sports Talk Show. At the end of February, Cumulus Media shuttered “The Opening Drive” morning show on its sports talker WJOX-FM, Birmingham that featured former Alabama quarterback Jay Barker, Al Del Greco and Tony Kurre. Now, via a deal with Audio Visual Excellence, Barker is producing a sports talk show that will air across some 10 signals, including Townsquare Media’s WTID-FM, Marion/W265CG, Tuscaloosa “TIDE 102.9/100.9.” “The Jay Barker Show with Lars Anderson” airs from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm, and joining Barker and The Athletic writer Anderson is Barker’s former WJOX producer Kerry Adams. Barker tells AL.com, “This is something Lars and I started talking about probably a year-and-a-half ago or more. We talked about doing a show together. I had wanted to move to middays for a while as my kids were getting older; that would fit my schedule better. And I started talking to Lars and Kerry about it and we were able to make it happen. Once we left JOX, we started putting it together, how we would do a show together.” In addition to hosting the daily program, Barker will also appear on the “Tide Tailgate Show” prior to Alabama football games this fall.
Jamie Allman’s Complaint Against Emmis Ordered into Mediation. St. Louis talk radio host Jamie Allman’s complaint against Emmis Communications is being ordered to alternative dispute resolution – read, mediation. Federal judge Jean C. Hamilton wants the mediation sessions concluded by November 1 of this year. As you may recall, Allman was fired by Emmis (still owner of KFTK-FM, St. Louis) and Entercom (LMAing the station in advance of acquiring it in a sale from Emmis) after his crude social media comment about Parkland, Florida student David Hogg gained traction. He was let go from his commentary gig at Sinclair’s KDNL-TV, St. Louis before KFTK-FM fired him. Allman is claiming his dismissal violated the terms of his contract. Emmis/Entercom say that Allman’s action caused sponsors to cancel ad contracts and put the station in a bad light.
LSU Athletics Partners with Skyview Networks for Broadcasts. This new, multi-year deal between LSU Sports Properties (operated by Outfront Media Sports Inc.) and Skyview Networks allows the school to use Skyview’s distribution service, AdView inventory management, and Live Read capture for its radio play-by-play broadcasts. Skyview says this deal pairs the AdView system with its distribution to provide detailed tracking and reporting of all radio inventory, including on-air advertiser mentions, to generate instant affidavits for faster client billing. Skyview VP of business development Matt Stys says, “We believe the Tigers will realize ease and efficiency in contract management and tighter turnaround on revenue collection with AdView’s tracking and output capabilities. We look forward to partnering with the university and continuing our discussions on broadcast solutions.” LSU Tigers radio voice Chris Blair comments, “We are excited to partner with Skyview Networks. It’s one of the top distribution companies and, most importantly, they understand what we do in the sports broadcasting space. Their Adview system will provide our team with many more opportunities to make the LSU Sports Radio Network even better.” AdView also offers additional modules for clients that would like to manage all forms of their advertising media in one consolidated system. This includes radio, TV, web, print, signage, and more to give organizations complete reporting of all avenues of sales revenue.

Nationally syndicated talk radio host Wayne Allyn Root tells TALKERS magazine he’s honored to welcome cable news/talk legend Bill O’Reilly to his eponymous USA Radio and Newsmax TV program. O’Reilly is appearing on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at the top of the show…..In the Burlington, Vermont/Plattsburgh, New York market sports talk outlet WCPV is switching affiliations from ESPN to FOX Sports Radio, effective September 4. Owner Vox AM/FM is also re-branding the station, using the “101.3 The Game” handle. The local afternoon show “The Huddle” with Rich Haskell, Arnie Spanier and Brady Farkas will air from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm and will be joined on the program schedule by Colin Cowherd, Clay Travis, and Dan Patrick…..After recent reports about the changes coming to ABC TV’s “The View” this fall, it is being confirmed that former “FOX & Friends Weekend” host Abby Huntsman (daughter of U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman) will join the cast of Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, and Meghan McCain when season 22 launches on September 4.

On-air pro Ashley Nickels exits her midday jock and APD/MD role with Cumulus Media’s hot AC WRQX, Washington “MIX 107.3” after four years with the station…..Tomorrow night (8/30), Cumulus Media alternative WKQX is hosting the neXt2rock local challenge event at the Cubby Bear in Chicago. Five of Chicago’s top local bands will compete to determine who will be the Chicago neXt2rock winner and have a shot at going to the finals in Los Angeles on October 4. The winner of the finals will be awarded a record deal on John Varvatos Records under the Big Machine Label Group umbrella and will receive exposure, commensurate with a major label release, on Cumulus stations nationwide. The five bands are: Friday Pilots Club, MIDWAVE, Like Language, The Giving Moon, and TAKE THE REINS. The event will feature live performances from: Bleachers, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, The Wonder Years, Two Feet, and The Unlikely Candidates. The New Music Discovery Stage will also feature performances from alternative-rock artists: Mo Lowda & The Humble, Castlecomer, and Cold Fronts, with more to be announced.

Nowadays, proliferation of the podcast appears to be riding a substantial wave of popularity, although the fairly elementary form of communication has actually been with us for well over a decade.
