Talk Pioneer Wendy King Dies at 92. The co-host of the KDKA-AM, Pittsburgh late-night show “Party Line” died on December 5 after a brief hospital stat at age 92. Wendy King, along with her late husband Ed King, co-hosted the program on KDKA from 1951 until her husband’s untimely death at age 50 in 1971. The show took its name from the old party line telephone service in which neighbors shared a common phone line. The broadcast technology of the times didn’t allow callers to the show to actually be heard on the air so the King’s would paraphrase what callers would say. Like so many shows of its era, the program wasn’t about political events but consisted of the kind of chatter you’d hear at a party – neighbors sharing stories with neighbors – plus a healthy dose of contests in which callers could take part. King was honored for her work in the industry at the 2010 Talkers Conference in New York City with a special video tribute produced by Art Vuolo. Photo: KDKA.
