NEW YORK — Whether through the recently-concluded World Baseball Classic won by Team USA in an 8-0 shutout over Puerto Rico or the Olympic Games, our planet famously comes together through athletic competition.
There is a vaguely similar, highly estimable radio counterpart, although it doesn’t require a four-year wait like the WBC or Olympics, and participants won’t require season- or career-ending Tommy John surgery.
Entrants of New York Festivals’ “World’s Best Radio Programs” are evaluated on what they do best and it has been that way ever since these particular honors were established in 1982.
At one point, those currently possessing privately-owned New York Festivals retained the Clio awards as well.
This particular competition spotlights the medium’s most innovative work from a worldwide base of radio station and network staffers, as well as independent producers.
Presidential Race, Hillary Clinton Emails Investigation, Sinking Oil Prices/Tumultuous World Financial Markets, Flint Water Contamination Controversy, Battle Against Islamic State, El Chapo’s Fast-and-Furious Gun, and Spike Lee/Jada Pinkett Smith-Led Oscars Boycott Among Top News/Talk Stories Yesterday (1/20). The activities of the candidates for president; the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server for State Department business; the continuing fall of crude oil prices and the negative effects on the world’s financial markets; the controversy over the lead-contaminated water supply in Flint, Michigan; the battle against Islamic State and the organization’s ongoing destruction of ancient ruins; the discovery of a Fast-and-Furious weapon in Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s arsenal; and the call for a boycott of the Oscars for its lack of black nominees were some of the most-talked-about stories on news/talk radio yesterday, according to ongoing research from TALKERS magazine.
WIP’s Josh Innes Suspended for Use of Racial Slur. WIP, Philadelphia afternoon drive host Josh Innes is being suspended for three days for using a racial epithet. Sports talker Innes apologized on the air shortly after comparing Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce (who is white) to a “house negro” for attending new Eagles coach Doug Pederson’s press conference. CBS RADIO said in a statement, “Comments made by Josh Innes during his WIP-FM program yesterday in regards to Eagles center Jason Kelce were inappropriate and unacceptable. We do not condone or approve of those comments.”
Round Two of Holiday PPM Data Released. The second of four rounds of Holiday 2015 PPM data from Nielsen Audio has been released for 12 markets including: Washington, Boston, Detroit, Miami, Seattle, Phoenix, Minneapolis, San Diego, Tampa, Denver, Baltimore, and St. Louis. WISN, Milwaukee Produces ‘Rebutting a Murderer’ Podcast Series. The case of Wisconsin convict Steven Avery is getting another treatment from radio journalist Dan O’Donnell at Milwaukee news/talk outlet WISN. Taking the perspective that the sensational Netflix documentary “Making a Murderer” is biased, O’Donnell uses his podcast series to rebut the film producers’ conclusion that Avery’s guilt was manufactured on poor evidence. O’Donnell is a non-practicing lawyer and radio journalist who was assigned to cover Avery from his release in 2003 through his (and his nephew’s) conviction in 2007. The iHeartMedia-owned station says that the podcast series mirrors the Netflix programs as a 10-part series “which combines the best parts of ‘Serial’ with the buzz of ‘Making a Murderer’ and the unique perspective of a law-school educated journalist who was there covering it all, bringing to light pieces of evidence the filmmakers left out or glazed over.”
Hartman Named GSM at Cox Jacksonville. Promoted from local sales manager to general sales manager at Cox Media Group’s Jacksonville radio operations is Nichole Hartman. The company says she “will lead a team of talented multi-media sales professionals who are experts in consumer behavior, representing seven radio stations and CMG Local Solutions. She will also serve as brand manager for WAPE, WJGL “Eagle 96.9,” and classic R&B “Hot 99.5 (W258CN). Cox Jacksonville DOS Bob DeBlois says, “Nichole’s hard work, willingness to take on all challenges and dedication to her team and our clients has developed her into not only a great manager for us but a shining star in our company. Her passion and enthusiasm for success is contagious.”
New York Festivals 2016 International Radio Program Awards Salutes the World’s Best Radio Programs. In addition to the announcement that the New York Festivals 2016 International Radio Program Awards are open for entries, comes news that there are three new categories this year. Those include: Biography/Profiles, Climate Change & Sustainability, and Music. Category Groups include: News Programs, News: Reports/Features, Information Documentary, Entertainment, Talk Programs, On-Air Talent, Craft, Programming Format, Morning Drive Programming, Promotions, Spots, Opens and ID’s, Online, Satellite, Audio Books, Audio Podcast, and Student. The worldwide competition honoring the World’s Best Radio Programs has been taking place since 1982 and receives entries from radio stations, networks, and independent producers from 32 countries around the globe. Radio program awards executive director Rose Anderson states, “New York Festivals recognizes the ever-evolving nature of the radio industry. Time does not stand still in the radio industry – new ways of reaching listeners and new ways of telling the important stories of our day drive change. Wheeler Broadcasting Gives Roanoke Second Sports Talker. According to a report in the Roanoke Times, the market is getting a second sports talk station as Wheeler Broadcasting flips from R&B on WPLY-AM. The format will also be simulcast on translator W247AD at 97.3 FM. Currently, 3 Daughters Media operates crosstown WGMN “ESPN in VA.” Wheeler president and GM Leonard Wheeler tells the paper it will be airing DirecTV/Fox Sports Radio’s Dan Patrick show and the Rich Eisen show plus Fox Sports Radio’s Colin Cowherd and other FSRN programming.
Odds & Sods. The syndicated feature “Something to Think About with Mike Rogers” hits the 200-affiliate station mark. The Westwood One-syndicated program has been airing for the past year and features Rogers, the former Michigan Republican congressman Chair of the House Intelligence Committee…..After a brief absence in market, “Dr. Chambers on Call” – hosted by Dr. Joseph Chambers – launches this weekend on KABC, Los Angeles in the Saturday 12:00 noon timeslot. The program previously aired for five years on crosstown KFWB…..The weekly “Motley Fool Money” radio program with host Chris Hill is now airing on KITZ, Silverdale, Washington serving the Puget Sound region…..Legendary golf coach and best-selling author Hank Haney signs a new multi-year deal with SiriusXM that will expand the presence of his radio show on the SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio channel. Haney and other leading instructors and golf personalities will now air seven days a week from 10:00 am to 11:00 am ET throughout the year…..Westwood One News is simulcasting CNN’s town hall on Monday, January 25, when the Democratic presidential hopefuls will face voters in Des Moines. The event is hosted by the Iowa Democratic Party and Drake University and takes place a week before the highly anticipated Iowa caucuses.
Cool Job Opportunity. At the Greater Media Charlotte station group there’s a rare opportunity for a production director for news/talk WBT and hot AC WLNK. The ideal candidate is experienced directing voice talent and must work well in a fast-paced environment and effectively juggle multiple projects. KFWB, Los Angeles Reportedly Sold. According to Los Angeles radio maven Don Barrett, there is finally a buyer for KFWB and it involves Charlie Banta-led Mercury Capital Partners. The Los Angeles Times also reports the story but does not name a buyer. The Times writes that staffers were told about the sale on Tuesday (1/5). As many TALKERS readers are aware, KFWB has been in the KFWB Asset Trust (while still benefitting CBS RADIO’s bottom line) for a long time. Some in the market have griped that CBS hasn’t been trying very hard to sell it and was basically getting away with violating the ownership limit. Regardless, in September of 2014 the station flipped from news/talk to sports talk as “The Beast 980” and is serving as the flagship for the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers, as well. Barrett Tweets that the new owners will assume control in February and since Mercury’s M.O. is ethnic programming and brokered radio, we’re likely to see a format change next month. That would put local sports talk personalities Fred Roggin, Bill Plaschke, Jeanne Zelasko, Chris Myers, Wes Clements and more out on the street. The Times reports that a format change is a certainty.
‘The Mighty 1090’ in San Diego Names Kevin Acee Evening Host. San Diego sports talk outlet XEPRS “The Mighty 1090” is naming San Diego sportswriter Kevin Acee the host of its evening program, “Trending Now.” Acee is a columnist for the San Diego Union Tribune, a position he will continue to hold. Acee also spent seven years as the San Diego Chargers beat writer and two years covering San Diego State football. Station VP of programming and operations Mike Shepard comments, “Kevin is a multi-media sports voice in San Diego who has the unique ability to connect and provide insight to sports fans on a variety of platforms. ‘Trending Now’ is the perfect showcase of his many talents, and we enthusiastically welcome Kevin to the full-time, all-star lineup on San Diego’s Sports Leader.”
Associated Press Offers 2016 Radio Campaign Kit. A new service for this year’s presidential election is being offered by the Associated Press. It’s called the 2016 Radio Campaign Kit, and AP calls it “a turnkey advantage that gives radio members election returns and AP journalists’ digital and on-air reporting on the presidential campaign in the months leading to Election Day and the inauguration of the 45th president in January.” AP has already inked Hubbard Radio’s all-news WTOP, Washington, among other stations. AP says that subscribers will receive verified vote counts in their home state and surrounding areas in primaries and the November 8 general election up to 12 times an hour via online maps and other modules. The modules will show delegate counts for both political parties, the popular vote, Electoral College totals for U.S. president and the balance of power in the U.S. Congress. In addition to dynamic election-night maps, the 2016 Radio Campaign Kit provides a suite of embeddable white-label interactives for use on AP members’ digital and on-air properties, optimized for display on mobile devices, desktops and tablets. Odds & Sods. Springfield, Illinois talk personality Ray Lytle exits Saga Communications-owned news/talk WTAX in a budget-related move. Lytle had been with the station for the past two years after previously serving with Mid-West Family Broadcasting’s crosstown news/talk WMAY…..CFRA, Ottawa legendary personality Lowell Green is retiring from his daily radio show at the Bell Media talk station. The 79-year-old Green began his career in the news department at CFRA in 1960. He became a talk host six years later and has been hosting the Lowell Green show on the station since 1993. He won’t be in full retirement mode as he’ll continue to make appearances on the station…..Weekend technology talk show “Into Tomorrow with Dave Graveline” announces the addition of some new affiliate stations as WGKA, Atlanta “AM 920 The Answer”; WRKO, Boston; and CKLW, Windsor, Ontario/Detroit are now carrying the program.

Obama Gun Control Plan, Presidential Race, ‘White Anger’ Report, Saudi-Iran Diplomatic Break/Shiite-Sunni Tensions, Oregon Armed Protestors Standoff, Battle Against Islamic State, and NFL Playoffs Among Top News/Talk Stories Yesterday (1/5). The executive order gun control plans announced by President Obama; the activities of the candidates for president; the Esquire/NBC News “American Rage” poll determining white Americans are the “angriest”; the diplomatic break between Saudi Arabia and Iran and the reported growing rift between Shiite and Sunni countries in the Middle East; the case of the armed protestors occupying an Oregon wildlife preserve; the recent military actions against Islamic State-held parts of Iraq; and this weekend’s NFL playoffs were some of the most-talked-about stories on news/talk radio yesterday, according to ongoing research from TALKERS.
CES 2016: Home and Health. Radio consultant Holland Cooke is in Las Vegas reporting from the enormous Consumer Electronics Show and today he files a story tipping us to some of the new technology and gadgets that some believe will be ubiquitous in both our homes and our cars in the not-too-distant future. Cooke writes that many of the technological helpers for around the home can be operated from the “remote” device most of us already carry – the smartphone – and that device is where “smart broadcasters are also publishing.” Read today’s full report here.
Talkers New York 2015 ‘Fireside Chat’ Video featuring Dialogue Between Michael Harrison and John Dickey Posted Today. Billed as a “Fireside Chat” in one of the keynote sessions of the just-concluded Talkers New York 2015 convention, TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison conducts a one-on-one conversation with Cumulus Media executive vice president of content & programming, John Dickey. In a series of what Dickey describes as “really tough questions,” Harrison asks him about a wide variety of subjects including how he handles the stress of being significantly responsible for the operation of one of the largest and most complex radio broadcasting companies in the history of the medium; whether or not the platform of radio can ever be accurately measured in terms of ratings; what position talk radio occupies within the overall Cumulus plan going forward; whether or not there is room for qualitative selling and non-traditional revenue generation at large, corporately owned stations; and if there is a future for the personality oriented disc jockey in music radio, among other topics. Dickey responds with thoughtful and candid answers before a fully engaged, packed house of professionals from all segments of the industry in a room so quiet, one could hear a proverbial pin drop. On the subject of stress, Dickey says it is a matter of “balance…balance in life” putting work and family into their proper perspectives. He ties that into programming — repeatedly stating that successful radio formats must maintain an effective balance of elements as they evolve forward with their “natural life cycles.” Dickey discusses the importance of “branding” in today’s commerce, underscoring his company’s commitment to and “heavy investment” in the talk format stating, “We are the ‘custodians’ of some of radio’s greatest brands,” making it clear that Cumulus takes that responsibility very seriously in the talk arena. He makes the point, “We must, however, arrive at an understanding of what constitutes the talk format today” pointing out that talk radio needs to “broaden the conversation” because “people talk about a lot of things.” On the subject of ratings (immediately following a powerful panel discussion about the state of audience measurement moderated by Sean Hannity during which Nielsen’s feet were held to the fire), Dickey is measured and fair in his criticism of Nielsen stating, “The ratings are accurate… but only to a point.” He says, “Nielsen needs to be [more forthcoming] about the ‘margin of error’ [in their metrics] – they owe us more than they are giving us.” Looking back at the conversation, Michael Harrison says, “John Dickey is one of the brightest young men I have ever met in this business and I have no doubt in my mind about his love for and commitment to radio. Neither he nor his brother Lew have easy jobs…and, like all human beings, they are far from perfect, not to mention the entire radio industry is challenged by the circumstances of the times… so operating the second largest ownership group in the history of the medium in the second decade of the 21st century is an extremely daunting task. Nielsen Unveils its Total Audience Report; Radio Leads Weekly Reach of Adults. Senior vice president of the audience insights division at Nielsen, Glenn Enoch, says that in preparing the first-ever Total Audience Report, the company is “using the best available data and have done all we can to make this an ‘apples-to-apples’ comparison, but it is important to remember that these platforms are measured by different methods using different samples and different crediting rules.” Enoch is referring to the challenge of finding one way to express the consumption of three different media platforms – TV, radio and digital. That said, radio practitioners are happy with the results indicating that on a weekly basis, radio reaches 93% of the adult population compared to television’s 87% reach. Digital is broken up into three segments – PC, smartphone, and tablet – and those reach 54%, 70% and 35% of American adults, respectively. However, when one looks at the weekly hours and minutes spent with each medium, television comes out on top across all adult demographics and radio comes in second. The data shows that, for persons 35-49, the average hours/minutes during the week spent with television was 33:05, for radio 13:39, for PCs 6:58, for smartphones 8:52, and for tablets 4:50. In tallying the number of days per week of usage for each medium for persons 18-49, smartphones come out on top with 5.9. Radio is close behind with 5. Television is third with 4.7, followed by tablets at 4.6 and PCs with 3.6. In a memo to his sales stall, Cumulus Media chief marketing officer Pierre Bouvard writes, “While radio is known as a frequency medium, we have always had significant reach. Radio’s reach has remained consistent while television has eroded. Radio now finds itself as America’s number one mass reach medium.”

Odds & Sods. The Edward R. Murrow Awards from the RTDNA will be handed out on October 12 in New York and CBS Radio News will receive the awards for Best Newscast and Best Continuing Coverage for the third straight year. Outstanding coverage of the downed Malaysian airliner in the Ukraine earned CBS the Best Newscast for its July 18 edition of World New Roundup by Steve Kathan and Paul Farry. The Continuing Coverage award was given for CBS’s yearlong reporting of the war on ISIS.….Chicago media writer Robert Feder is reporting that Cumulus Media’s news/talk WLS-AM, Chicago has secured the rights to Chicago White Sox baseball for a six-year deal that would start with the 2016 season. Currently, White Sox baseball is heard on CBS RADIO’s sports talk WSCR “670 The Score.”…..It didn’t take long for former San Diego Chargers analyst Hank Bauer to find a new gig. The former Chargers player will join Sports USA as a play-by-play analyst for its NFL broadcasts beginning in September. Bauer’s deal to work in the Chargers radio network booth was not renewed after 17 years…..Jon Laaser is named the new radio play-by-play man for Virginia Tech football starting this fall by rights holder IMG. Laaser will work in the booth with color man Mike Burnop.
Alan Colmes Recalls Playing Gunhill Road in His DJ Days. Mainstay radio and TV talker Alan Colmes of FOX News Radio and FOX News Channel is pictured at left at Talkers New York 2015 (6/12) being interviewed for a documentary film being produced about the legendary pop/rock band Gunhill Road that he recalls from his early days as a DJ spinning rock ‘n’ roll. The trio had a great time schmoozing with radio broadcasters from both music and talk formats at the recent mega-conference. Gunhill Road had two FM rock radio album favorites and the hit single “Back When My Hair Was Short” in the early 1970s. They surprised the music world recently by releasing an unexpected album with 19 new tracks titled Every 40 Years (Gunhill Road Records) that has garnered some airplay on AC and triple-A formats as well as a ton of interviews on talk radio – talk show hosts with a taste for pop culture find the group’s personal story fascinating. The group attended the conference to appear with various radio folk in the forthcoming documentary (“Back When My Hair Was Long”) about their extremely unlikely two-part journey from the 1970s to the modern digital era set for theatrical release in 2016 and to promote their latest single, “I’ve Got To Learn To Cry (featuring American Idol’s Julia DeMato). The 28th Annual Geraldo Golf Classic. 77WABC personality Geraldo Rivera (left) is here with honoree Steven G. Santino (right) at Monday’s Geraldo Golf Classic at Edgewood Country Club in River Vale, New Jersey. Geraldo’s radio show was broadcast live from the event and golfers participated in contests, watched the broadcast, golfed, and enjoyed an extended cocktail hour in the evening.
