PPM Analysis: News/Talk.  Managing editor Mike Kinosian presents his analysis of the performances of news/talk stations based on data from the February 2017 PPM survey from Nielsen Audio.  Is the “Trump effect” cooling off for commercial news/talk outlets?  Kinosian writes, “Just over half our commercial talk sample (54%) is down January 2017 – February 2017; 30% of the stations are up; and the remaining 16% of the panel is unchanged (6+).”  Nielsen data indicates that talk-oriented public radio appears to be benefitting from the news cycle surrounding the Trump Administration more than commercial news/talk, but comparing February 2016 to February 2017, the news is still good for the format.  “More or less flip-flopping the above-sited month-to-month numbers, 60% of stations on this commercial talk panel improve year-to-year while 34% decline; the remaining 6% are steady.”  Also, there are 15 news/talk stations that rank in the top 5 (6+) in their respective markets.  See the entire report here.
