May 2019 PPM Analysis: DC Repeats As Spoken-Word Champ

TALKERS

LOS ANGELES — On numerous occasions the past several years, we have depicted the top news/talk markets in a specific ratings sweep.

This, however, is our most ambitious project to date, as we assess the temperature of spoken-word stations as a complete entity in all 48 PPM-markets.

Especially as it relates to this particular exercise, our definition of spoken-word includes commercial English-language news/talk outlets; all-newsas well as business news – facilities; and public radio news/talk operations.

That last category can be acutely thorny, since by their very noncommercial nature, some stations falling under that banner are – admittedly – much broader in scope and could be ascribed as “variety.”

As a result, even though these stations are tagged “public radio news/talk,” it is highly-possible that listeners could hear them air jazz, classical, bluegrass, and/or several other musical genres in various dayparts. It is our intention that programming on stations listed here as “public radio news/talk” falls predominantly (if not exclusively) under the news, news/talk umbrella.

Another member of the spoken-word family, sports talk, is purposefully excluded from this analysis. Results from that format’s May 2019 performance were posted on (Thursday) June 20 and have been archived on our website.

Nielsen Audio only releases audience estimates for stations subscribing to its services.

As a result, stats in this analysis are limited to facilities paying Nielsen Audio for its information.

In the last bit of fine-print for this comprehensive overview, we have applied absolutely no ratings restrictions for the May 2019 sweep, which covered April 25 through May 22. Every news; news-talk; and public radio news/talk station notching at least a .1 (6+, May 2019) is included in this comprehensive recap.

January 2017 PPM Analysis:
Talk-Oriented Public

TALKERS

LOS ANGELES — This week’s earlier posts illustrated exceptionally strong January 2017 PPM rebounding by all-news (Wednesday, 3/1) and commercial talk (Thursday, 3/2) properties.

Continuing the positive “Holiday” 2016 – January 2017 ratings trend is a group of stations we are designating “talk-oriented public.”

To be clear, this is not an overview of all public outlets in PPM-markets, but rather a focus on those that are primarily information-intensive.

By the very nature of being public stations, programming can be multi-faceted, meaning some on our “talk-oriented public” panel could incorporate music blocks (jazz, classical, folk, bluegrass, etc.).

Purposefully excluded from this list are noncommercial public stations that are exclusively or principally music-reliant.

The following (6+) “talk-oriented public” scoreboards are comprised of stations that appeared in the top 20 in any of the 48 PPM-markets in January 2017, a ratings period that covered January 5 to February 1.

Nielsen Audio only releases audience estimates for facilities that subscribe to its services. Owing to that reason, ratings stats in this exclusive analysis are limited to stations that pay Nielsen Audio for its data.
