LOS ANGELES — In a special feature piece at about this time last month, we noted that – owing to a wildly popular programming strategy of playing wall-to-wall Christmas music from (roughly) Thanksgiving week through December 25 – Nielsen Audio’s “Holiday” survey period can be known for reflecting some especially noteworthy wobbles.
The same can certainly be said for the ratings company’s January sweeps when listening habits revert to pre-Christmas levels.
If, for example, you sensed there were copious Holiday” 2018 – January 2019 (6+) improvements of nine-tenths, your perception was exceptionally well-founded, as 29 stations posted such gains.
Additionally, 21 stations registered a +1.2, while another 21 a +1.1 (Holiday” 2018 – January 2019, 6+); the January 2019 ratings period covered January 3 – 30.
The following summarizes which formats benefitted the most from turning the calendar to January and which wished the “Holiday” sweep could have continued even longer. Gold star if you blurted out “adult contemporary” for the latter.
