Tag: "August 2019 Spoken-Word Pacesetters"
By Mike Kinosian
LOS ANGELES — Earlier this month, we posted August 2019 ratings overviews for all-news (9/12); sports talk (9/13); and public radio news/talk (9/16).
Given that our definition of spoken-word includes commercial English-language news/talk outlets; all-news facilities (including business news); sports talk; and public radio news/talk operations, the following August 2019 “Ratings Extra” marks the first time in our years of doing such comprehensive individual monthly format synopses that we gauge the temperature of spoken-word stations as a complete entity in all 48 PPM-markets.
Admittedly, that last category – “public radio news/talk” – can be tricky.
Some stations falling under that banner are much broader in scope and could easily be labeled “variety,” as it is highly-possible listeners will hear those outlets air jazz, classical, bluegrass, and/or several other musical genres in various dayparts.
Nonetheless, programming on the majority of “public radio news/talk” stations listed here falls predominantly (if not exclusively) under the news/talk umbrella.
Nielsen Audio only releases audience estimates for stations subscribing to its services.
As a result, stats in this analysis are limited to facilities paying Nielsen Audio for its information.
There’s only other disclaimer: For the sake of across-the-board consistency, we have established the criteria in this particular analysis as a top 20 finish in any of the 48 PPM-markets.
