Monday Memo: Be Yourself

| May 28, 2019

BLOCK ISLAND, RI — It’s an Oscar Wilde quote: “Be yourself.  Everyone else is already taken.”  Consultant-wary talent has been overheard muttering, about the consultant: “He had to take a connecting flight to come all the way here to tell me THAT?”

Howard Stern’s autobiographical movie “Private Parts” demonstrates how nonconformity was his turning point.  To that point, don’t-say “The Democrat’ Party.”  It’s like a fax went out one morning, and all the Rush wanna-be’s forevermore aped this phrase, spoken as a put-down.  It’s “the Democratic Party.”  And if it isn’t, wouldn’t that make the other guys “The Republic’ Party?”  Instead of doing his act, do yours.

“The best way to practice Free Speech is to do it, and not care what people say.”

Rush Limbaugh, accepting Talkers’ Freedom of Speech Award several years ago.

  • “Be yourself,” and “take hate [articulated by detractors] as a measure of success,” Rush told us. “Don’t give anybody the power to offend you.”
  • And he urged management to “find somebody who really loves this, who you can’t keep out of the radio station, who you can’t kick out of the radio station. Get out of their way for a while and let ’em see what happens, and you find out what happens.  The only way you’re going to find out if true talent exists is to let it blossom.”

The more typical you sound, the less memorable you will be.

And ratings methodology is a memory test.  So here’s the litmus test for DJ or host delivery: Would you want THAT person in your carpool?  Or sitting next to you at work?  That’s the TSL we’re asking for.

“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

Dr. Seuss, who shared his hometown, Springfield, Massachusetts, with Dr. Timothy Leary, the game of basketball, Smith & Wesson, and your consultant.
