Salem Media Group’s 2018 Q1 Broadcast Revenue Flat. The company as a whole saw total revenue of $63.8 million – a decrease of 1.8% compared to the same period in 2017. The broadcast division’s net revenue was $48.1 million, an increase of 0.5%. Station Operating Income increased 2.8% to $12.3 million from $12 million. Salem Media Group’s digital media division was down 2.7% and the publishing segment was off 17.6%. Revealed in the company’s 8-K filing is that it is swapping KKOL, Seattle for KPAM, Portland. Salem has been operating KPAM as conservative news/talk “860 The Answer” under a time brokerage agreement. It expects the deal with Intelli LLC to close in June.

TALKERS News Notes. Radio executive Richard Marks is named chief operating officer for United States Traffic Network. The company says that in this role, Marks will work directly with chairman and CEO Ivan Shulman“in rebuilding the brand and creating action plans that deliver rapid growth, as well as improve overall performance and increase revenue.” Marks has previously served with Westwood One, Shadow Broadcast Services/Metro Networks, and as COO of Focus 360. He launched his own consulting firm in 2008 and advised a wide range of broadcast media and content companies until April 2013. He says, “I look forward to leveraging my expertise working with a wide range of broadcast media companies to help USTN and will work to make smart, strategic moves for the company to ensure a steady foundation that will allow for scalable growth well into the future.”…..FOX News Radio is preparing a one-hour special for air during Memorial Day weekend looking at the summer movie scene. WPHT, WIP and KYW, Philadelphia Nab Five ‘Excellence in Broadcasting’ Awards. Three of Entercom’s Philadelphia spoken-word stations were honored by the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters with “Excellence in Broadcasting” awards at the organization’s May 7 luncheon. News/talk WPHT, all-news KYW and sports talk WIP-FM were recognized with top honors. “Sounds of Sinatra” host Sid Mark was honored as the PAB 2018 Radio Broadcaster of the Year. KYW Newsradio took home the Outstanding Radio Promotional Announcement and Contest award for its Traffic Center’s “Traffic Tip Tuesday” promotion and the PAB Judges’ Merit Award for its “Breakfast Briefing” segment. Music Radio News and Career Moves. Minneapolis country outlet KMNB “BUZ’N @ 102.9” promoted Lucas Phelan to program director for the Entercom-owned station. Phelan has been hosting afternoon drive – and he’ll continue that on-air role – and serving as APD. This is a very exciting chapter.”…..The New York State Broadcasters Association – as well as most other radio broadcasters – is cheering the introduction of the Preventing Illegal Radio Abuse Through Enforcement Act (PIRATE Act) that’s been introduced to the U.S. House by Congressman Paul Tonko (D-NY) and Congressman Leonard Lance (R-NJ). NYSBA president David Donovan says, “For too long the citizens of New York have endured the harm caused by illegal pirate radio stations. These stations: 1) interfere with the Emergency Alert System (EAS); 2) interfere with FAA and airport communications; 3) emit levels of RF radiation into local neighborhoods that are above government standards; 3) ignore all consumer protection laws and 4) blatantly transgress all FCC rules and regulations.
