PPM Analysis: News/TalkTALKERS managing editor Mike Kinosian presents an analysis of the performances of stations based on data from Nielsen Audio’s Holiday 2017 PPM survey, today focusing on news/talk.  Nielsen’s Holiday survey is generally not kind to news/talk stations as a comparison of 6+ ratings from December to the Holiday survey shows – “three of every four news/talk stations on this sample are down between December 2017 – Holiday 2017 (75%), while only 16% improve; the remaining 9% are flat.”  Comparing news/talk stations year-over-year, “nearly four of 10 of these qualifying news/talk panelists are up Holiday 2016 – Holiday 2017 (38%); 56% are down; and the remaining 6% are unchanged from a year ago.”  Just one news/talk outlet ranked #1 (6+) in its market during the Holiday PPM survey – Cox Media Group’s WSB-AM/WSBB-FM, Atlanta.  Three stations ranked #2 in their respective markets: Bonneville’s KSL-AM/FM, Salt Lake City; iHeartMedia’s WISN, Milwaukee; and Townsquare Media’s WKXW, Trenton “New Jersey 101.5.”  See the entire report here.

TALKERS News Notes.  With the aid of translator W252DF, Largo, Florida, that Genesis Communications is using to carry the signal from news/talk WWBA, Tampa, company president and CEO Bruce Maduri declares that “Bubba is back on 98!”  He’s referring to the FM frequency of the translator and that Bubba the Love Sponge (whose show is heard in mornings on WWBA) was heard on the FM dial for years in the market on iHeartMedia’s WXTB-FM “98 Rock” (at 97.9 FM).   Maduri says, “We are excited to expand our news/talk listenership in St. Petersburg and Clearwater with 98.3 FM.”…..The progressive talk format on Stephen King’s WZON-AM, Bangor, Maine is gone as the station flips to an oldies format branded as “Z62.”  The station had been airing “Retro Weekends” shows featuring oldies music and decided that the success of those weekends was a recipe for a flip.  The station will continue to use CBS Radio News for top-of-the-hour reports and the 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm “Downtown with Rich Kimball” program remains on the program schedule…..At RadiOhio’s sports talker WBNS-FM, Columbus “97.1 The Fan,” former Ohio State and Green Bay Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk is joining Anthony Rothman for a 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm Monday show called “Off-Season with A.J. Hawk.”  When the NFL season begins in September, Hawk will be part of the Friday programming on the “Carpenter and Rothman” show…..ABC News Radio is offering the 30-part series “Tax Tips.”   The feature is hosted by ABC News correspondents Scott Goldberg and Daria Albinger.  ABC news chief business and economics correspondent Rebecca Jarvis is providing analysis…..The WOAI, San Antonio-based, nationally syndicated Joe Pags show is being added to the lineup on CRN Digital Talk Radio.  The program airs at 6:00 pm ET on the network’s CRN 4 channel.

Alliance for Women in Media Announces News Officers, Record Gracies Entries.  The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation announces that the 2018 call for entries for the annual Gracie Awards was the most successful in the program’s history.  At the same time, the Alliance for Women in Media and its philanthropic arm, the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation, announce new officers.  The Gracie Awards are the largest fundraising event for the AWMF.  New to the AWM board are Joyce Fitch, executive vice president, general counsel and secretary, Beasley Broadcast Group, Inc., and Diane Schwartz, SVP and group publisher, Media Communications Group, Access Intelligence.  Chairperson-elect of AWM/F is Keisha Sutton-James, vice president, Inner City Broadcasting CorpHeather Cohen, executive vice president, The Weiss Agency, will serve as treasurer, while Sarah Foss, chief product officer, advertising management systems, Imagine Communications will serve as AWM/F past chair.

FBI Memo Release, Trump-Russia Investigation, Friday’s Dow Dip, DACA Status/Immigration Policy, South Carolina Amtrak Crash, Flu Epidemic, and Super Bowl LII Among Top News/Talk Stories Over the Weekend.  The release of the secret FBI surveillance memo; Robert Mueller-led investigation into possible connections between Trump campaign operatives; the Dow’s Friday plunge of 666 points; the status of the Obama-era DACA Act and the Trump administration’s immigration policy; the deadly crash of an Amtrak train in South Carolina; the flu epidemic that’s sweeping the U.S.; and Super Bowl LII between the Patriots and the Eagles were some of the most-talked-about stories on news/talk radio over the weekend, according to ongoing research from TALKERS magazine.



Music Radio News and Career Moves.  Programming pro Wayne “Big D” Danielson is promoted to program director for iHeartMedia’s KWNR, Las Vegas “95.5 The Bull.”  Danielson will report to regional SVP Tony Matteo, who says, “Big D has been a part of the fabric of the ‘Bull’ brand in Vegas in many roles over the years and we’re excited that he’ll now be leading the station as program director.  No one knows this station, this city and this audience better than Big D.”  Danielson became part of the KWNR staff in August of 2016 after serving with sister adult hits station KYMT “93.1 The Party.”…..Entercom names William “Will” Althoff afternoon drive host and music director for alterntive rock WSFS, Miami “104.3 The Shark.”  Entercom Miami SVP and market manager Keriann Worley comments, “Will is an exciting addition to our afternoon drive on the ‘Shark.’  His background and expertise in connecting with the audience makes him the perfect fit for our station.”  Althoff takes over the afternoon drive show from Zach McHugh, who recently moved to Richmond to become PD and afternoon jock at the company’s alternative WRXL…..On-air pro Mercedes Howard exits her role as morning personality on Entercom’s hip hop KQKS, Denver “KS 107.5.”  She says, “I was honored for the opportunity to return to the station that helped mold my radio career and take the top spot on Denver’s number one station for todayʼs hottest music on the morning show…The people of Denver have helped me reach immense success and for that I will forever be grateful.  Now I look forward to the rest of this year with pride and turn to a new chapter in my career book.  I am enthusiastic about new opportunities in my radio career and the possibilities of expanding my talents, my name and my brand in other areas.”…..Stacey Proctor is promoted to director of sales for Entercom’s Phoenix cluster that includes CHR KALV “LIVE 101.5,” classic hits KOOL-FM, and country KMLE “@107.9.”  Entercom Phoenix SVP and market manager Dave Pugh states, “Stacey has been an incredible colleague for the past two years and I’m confident she is the perfect fit to lead our Phoenix cluster.  She’s earned this promotion through the performance and her leadership that she demonstrates every day.”…..In the Longview-Tyler, Texas market, Alpha Media names Brandon Young content director for country KYKX.
