knbrlogoKNBR, San Francisco Votes to Unionize.  There is no comment so far from owner Cumulus Media after the staff at sports talker KNBR, San Francisco voted to recognize SAG-AFTRA as its bargaining unit.  The union announces that after the results of an October 22 ballot that was returned on November 4, it will represent more than 35 workers at the station and plans to beginsagaftra logo negotiating with KNBR/KTCT on its first contract.  SAG-AFTRA quotes KNBR staffers including talk host and news anchor Ted Ramey who says, “Just like the many teams that we cover, we bring commitment and passion to KNBR every day.  We want to be treated as respected members of our team.”  Producer Brian Smith adds, “We aim to reach a deal that will ensure that all of us dedicated to KNBR have a share of our successes.”  Recently, producers at CBS RADIO’s WIP-FM, Philadelphia joined the union that already represented air talent.

loeschTourDana Loesch Hits the Road on Book Tour.  Nationally syndicated Radio America talk show host Dana Loesch is on a cross-country tour promoting her new book, Hands off My Gun (Center Street 2014) and recently made stops at affiliate station events.  In the photo here, Loesch (second from left) poses with fellow panelists at WDBO-FM, Orlando’s live listener event titled, “News 96.5’s Red, White and Truth.”  With her are Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz (left), Fox News Channel and Premiere Networks superstar Sean Hannity (second from right) and author David Limbaugh (right).  Loesch also visited Atlanta where she spent an hour on the air with WSB-AM/FM personality Erick Erickson prior to a book-signing on the campus of Georgia Tech.

carrhowiekathyTVHowie Carr Live Book Signing Now Posted on TalkersTV.  This past Saturday (11/1), regionally syndicated New England talk show host, newspaper columnist and prolific author, Howie Carr (pictured here at left) made a live book signing appearance at Table & Vine, a famous liquor and gourmet delicacy store in West Springfield, Massachusetts.  Carr was promoting the latest in his series of behind-the-scenes crime books, Pug Uglies (2014 Frandel LLC) which has developed a huge following among fans of historic Boston-based mob lore.  The promotion was a successful example of Carr’s “Wine & Sign” appearances at which he does book sales/signings at liquor stores across the region.  More than 200 fans showed up at the event and 400 copies of Carr’s three latest books were sold within a two-hour period.  TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison attended the event and conducted the interview with Howie and his wife Kathy Carr (pictured here at right) who serves as VP of sales and marketing for his show.  According to Harrison, “This was an outstanding win-win-win for Table & Vine, local radio affiliate – iHeartMedia’s WHYN, Springfield, and the Howie Carr Show.  It was clear to me, speaking with the people who attended, that Howie Carr is a master talk show host who engenders tremendous loyalty in his listeners – these folks love him!  And Kathy is a tremendous marketer who can teach a number of things to today’s radio account execs.”  Howie Carr states in the interview, “I don’t think radio is dead if you know how to use it properly and interact with your audience.”  To view the video piece, see the TalkersTV box at the top of the right hand column of this page.

salemcommunicationsSalem Communications Reports Q3 Broadcast Net Revenue Up 2.1%.  The best-performing segments of Salem Communications are its internet/e-commerce (up 55.4%) and publishing (up 164.7%), but the broadcasting division also saw net revenue rise in the third quarter of 2014 by 2.1% on earnings of $47 million compared to the same period a year ago.  You’ll recall that Salem recently acquired Twitchy.com for its internet/e-commerce division and Eagle Publishing was brought into the publishing division.  For the year so far, the broadcast division’s net revenue is up 3% on earnings of $140.4 million.

sagaSaga Communications’ Q3 Net Revenue Jumps 4.4%.  The third quarter financial report from Saga Communications showed an improved net operating revenue figure – a hike of 4.4% on revenue of $34.4 million.  The company reports that station operating expense was $26.4 million (station operating expense includes depreciation and amortization attributable to the stations) compared to $23.6 million for the same period last year.  That increase was primarily due to an accrual attributable to the company’s expectations of entering into license agreements in the fourth quarter of 2014 which are currently under negotiation.  For the first three quarter of 2014, Saga states net operating revenue increased 2.0% to $97.6 million compared to $95.7 million for the same period last year.

brownejoyTALKERS Weekly Affiliate Roundup.  The Genesis Communications-syndicated Dr. Joy Browne show is added to the program schedule at WHAN, Ashland, Virginia…..Radio America-syndicated Dana Loesch program is added to the program schedule at WWBA, Tampa; WYDE, Birmingham; WDCD-AM, Albany; WTKI, Huntsville; KEEL, Shreveport; KURV, McAllen-Brownsville-Harlingen, Texas; KYYW Abilene, and KAPE, Cape Girardeau, Missouri…..The GCN-distributed “America Tonight” program hosted by Kate Delaney is added to new affiliates WPBQ, Jackson, Mississippi and KIXW, Victorville, California.
