nms2013logoEntercom Boston VP of Programming Jason Wolfe to Present Closing Keynote at Talkers New York 2013.  In what promises to be a timely, pertinent and compelling conclusion to one of the most important industry conferences in modern memory, Entercom Boston VP of programming Jason Wolfe will deliver the closing keynote address.  The address is titled “Reflections on a Tragedy and the Fundamental Role of Radio.”  It will provide insight and first-hand recollections of the Boston Marathonwolfejason bombings from the local perspective of a Boston radio group that found itself in the thick of the national crisis.  In accepting the assignment, Wolfe tells TALKERS, “It was such a remarkable, emotional and dramatic situation that it is taking me weeks to sort out my thoughts and feelings on the experience.  Our group was just one of a number of fine Boston-area radio stations that did an excellent job of being there for the people of the region with news and information about the unfolding drama.  It was a remarkable time of sharing, of pooling resources among competitors, for the good of the  community.”  Wolfe, whose Entercom Boston outlets include news/talk WRKO and sports talk WEEI, continues, “…but it isn’t just about the presentation of news and information – talk radio provides a more complex and deeper service during times like this.  And this includes many music stations that stopped playing songs and became, for all intents and purposes, talk stations themselves during the crisis.  Talk radio provides the opportunity for people to vent and share feelings…to plug in directly to the human condition.  It provides the opportunity for people to become connected into a community of fellow human beings linked together by common fears, pain, and confusion during a tragedy.  Talk radio provides hope.  Or at least, it should.”  Wolfe sums it up: “I believe that we as broadcasters share a deeper more fundamental responsibility to the public than just being entertainers.  We must use this precious opportunity we have to actually serve the public good on every level within our power.”  Wolfe is one of more than 50 outstanding industry leaders who will be speaking at Talkers New York 2013 on Thursday, June 6.  The event will be sold out by the close of business on Wednesday of this week.  Registrations ($199) are only open to members of the working media and can be booked by phone with credit card at 413-565-5413.  For the complete agenda and more details, click here.

kaminskybrianClear Channel Names Brian Kaminsky EVP of Operations for Digital.  Coming over to Clear Channel from his most recent position as COO and general manager of The Huffington Post, Brian Kaminsky will join the company’s digital division as executive vice president of operations, effective immediately.  Kaminsky will report to CC president of digital Brian Lakamp and will be based out of New York City.  Kaminsky’s charge will be to oversee digital advertising operations, customer support, product analytics and partner operations across the suite of Clear Channel’s digital products including iHeartRadio, Clear Channel’s industry leading digital radio service, and its vast network of station websites.  His responsibilities will also include setting best practices for the management and modernization of digital ad inventory, and working with sales and product teams to define and develop new ad products.  Lakamp states, “Having Brian on board as the EVP of operations illustrates Clear Channel’s commitment to hiring exceptional, innovative talent that will continue to strengthen our position as a market leader.  His business management skills and experience in optimizing the use of digital advertising inventory within technology-driven organizations will be a great asset to both our advertisers and the Clear Channel digital team.”  Prior to his work at The Huffington Post, Kaminsky was vice president of global revenue operations at Reuters Media, where he supervised yield management systems for desktop, video, mobile and digital out-of-home advertising products.

meyerjimSiriusXM Names James Meyer CEO.  James Meyer has been serving as interim chief executive officer for SiriusXM Satellite Radio since Mel Karmazin resigned from the position last fall.  Now, the company gives him the job officially.  SiriusXM chairman Gregory Maffei states, “After a thorough search of excellent candidates, we are delighted to name Jim as the CEO of SiriusXM, where he will continue to lead a very strong executive team.  Jim is a highly qualified leader and operator and we look forward to working with him to build on SiriusXM’s position as the innovator in audio entertainment.  He has been a vital part of SiriusXM for close to a decade, and his extensive knowledge of SiriusXM’s business and significant industry experience will be invaluable assets in the highly competitive market within which SiriusXM is thriving.  Jim’s leadership, strategic vision and operating focus are exactly what SiriusXM needs today and in the future.”

car radioDebate of Future of Dashboard Front and Center in Detroit.  In a piece published in the Detroit News on April 29, the topic of the future of the AM/FM radio in the automobile dashboard was addressed and Gartner Inc. vice president Thilo Koslowski says he believes that by the year 2020 “I feel very confident that many consumers will consume radio content through avenues other than terrestrial broadcast.”  Right now, the big three are still providing AM/FM radios in new cars and plan to do so for the foreseeable future but, obviously, they are also adding the digital technology that people want.  Ford’s Jim Buczkowski says, “We’re trying to give them lots of different options.”  As the piece points out, it costs money to listen to internet audio – it comes from the users’ data plans.  Though Koslowski says he believes that it just makes more sense to listen via Wi-Fi or data plan and that carriers will “get more creative with their data plans”  allowing people to listen more cheaply.  When Detroit Electric unveils its first model in August of this year, it will not have an AM/FM radio.  Users will plug in their smartphones.  Still, other analysts say the free and simple nature of AM/FM radio is something that carmakers will be conscious of before they take the drastic step of eliminating it from the dash and risk alienating customers.   Read the Detroit News piece here.

sliwalichtmanWNYM, New York’s Curtis Sliwa and Jeffrey Lichtman Debut Remote Mayoral Candidate Roundtable.  Tonight is the first in a series of mayoral candidate roundtable broadcasts produced by Salem Communications’ WNYM, New York “970 The Answer” and hosted by the station’s Curtis Sliwa (right) and Jeffrey Lichtman (left).  This evening’s program will emanate from the Statler Grill on 33rd and 7th from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.  Sliwa states, “This is the first mayoral election in over a decade that has a wide open primary contest on both sides of the aisle, along with a viable independent candidate.  Folks need to know what’s going on and it’s our duty as broadcasters and New Yorkers to bring it to them.  All the viable mayoral candidates are invited.”  WNYM vice president and general manager Jerry Crowley states, “It is this kind of live and local broadcasting that sets AM970 apart in the market.  Curtis Sliwa is the quintessential New York broadcaster on New York’s radio home for live and local broadcasting.”

Odds & Sods.  Hubbard Broadcasting’s WTOP, Washington teams up with Allbritton Communications’ WJLA-TV, Washington “ABC7” on a joint traffic reporting partnership.  Under the arrangement, WTOP will become the exclusive morning traffic home to ABC7.  ABC7 reporter Amanda Meadows will be reporting live for ABC7 from the WTOP “Glass-enclosed nerve center” duringbaldwinadam ABC7’s “Good Morning Washington.”  The reports will air six times an hour from 5:00 am to 7:00 am and two times an hour from 7:00 am to 9:00 am weekday mornings.  Meadows’ reports will be produced by veteran traffic reporter/producer Rob Woodfork…..KYW, Philadelphia account executive Adam Baldwin is promoted to local sales manager for the CBS Radio all-news outlet.  Vice president and director of sales Jim Loftus states, “Adam has excelled as an account executive at KYW, and in his pointing key clients across the CBS platform.  He brings a fresh perspective to our management team.  We look forward to his insight and talent in growing our family of advertisers, and further developing our sales team.”

miller7bestKIDO, Boise’s Kevin Miller Gets Local Accolades.  Morning drive talk host Kevin Miller – heard daily on Peak Broadcasting’s KIDO, Boise – was named best radio host by local television station KTVB as part of its “7’s Best” awards.  Miller tells TALKERS magazine his program topped all of the other radio stations and their morning shows in the market.  Miller (right) is pictured here in a piece that aired during KTVB’s news.  KTVB’s Larry Gebert interviewed Miller and the two spoke at length about the community work Miller’s program has done including assisting local non-profits that aid the homeless as well as keeping the community aware of the plight of local Army soldier Bowe Bergdahl – the only American still held captive from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.

Boston Marathon Bombing Aftermath, Middle East Turmoil, Cold Spring Weather, and NBA Player Comes Out Among Top News/Talk Stories Yesterday (4/29).  The ongoing investigation into the Boston Marathon bombing; military activity in Syria and Israel; the cold spring weather affecting much of the U.S.; and the coming out of NBA player Jason Collins were some of the most-talked-about stories on news/talk radio yesterday, according to ongoing research from TALKERS.

SHAKER HEIGHTS — There’s something that makes Facebook different from all other social media sites, and I’m going to tell you how you can use it to your advantage.

Facebook has a vested interest in showing you the best content.  They’re also clearly suspicious about what most businesses and brands are posting, because they limit us from the start, showing our posts to 10-15% of our followers.

Most brands don’t do a very good job in social media.  They’re stuck in an old model of pumping out marketing messages, and that’s what they do on Facebook.  You, as an individual, didn’t get on social media to be advertised to!  Neither did your followers.  When you cut and paste your promo liners to Facebook, or try and write to your followers like you talk to your listeners, you’re confirming Mark Zuckerberg’s view that it’s in his interest to block your fans from reading your hype.  Your promos cut down on his users’ time-spent-engaging.

So here’s the secret.  Turn your promotion into content.

fccnewFCC Approves Sale of Cox Media Group Stations to SummitMedia and Connoisseur.  Late last summer Cox Media Group announced it was putting stations in six markets on the block as part of a realignment of its business strategy that has it focusing on its larger market stations and operations that dovetail with its other media properties.  Now that these two deals have received FCC approval, it shouldn’t be long before they close.  SummitMedia will pay $66.25 million for radio properties in five markets: Birmingham (WAGG-AM, WBHJ-FM, WBHK-FM, WENN-AM, WZZK-FM, WZNN-FM, WBPT-FM, and CMG’s contract rights for WALJ-FM); Greenville, South Carolina (WJMZ-FM, WHZT-FM); Hawaii (KRTR-AM/FM, KPHW-FM, KCCN-FM, KINE-FM, KKNE-AM); Louisville (WRKA-FM, WVEZ-FM, WSFR-FM, WQNU-FM); and Richmond (WHTI-FM, WKHK-FM, WKLR-FM, WURV-FM).  Connoisseur will pay $40 million for the Southern Connecticut stations that include: WPLR-FM, WEZN-FM, WFOX-FM, and contract rights for WYBC-FM.

rosettiangelaTwo Promotions at Capital Broadcasting’s “Talk 1300 AM” Albany.  Capital Broadcasting president Paulfinnigankate Vandenburgh announces two promotions at the company’s WGDJ, Albany “Talk 1300 AM.”  Angela Rosetti, who has been with the station since it went on the air, becomes operations manager.  At the same time, Kate Finnigan returns to the station and takes on the role of sales manager.  Rosetti is a Siena College graduate and Delmar native.  Finnigan is also a native of the Capital Region having grown up in Glenmont.

infinitedial logoArbitron and Edison Research Break Out ‘Infinite Dial’ Data by P1s; Public Radio P1s Are Far More Digitally Involved Than News/Talk Aficionados.  Yesterday’s webinar for client stations of Arbitron took the data accumulated by Arbitron and Edison Research for its “Infinite Dial 2013” study and presented it from the context of P1s of 10 radio formats: rock, CHR, country, news/talk/sports, classic rock/classic hits, urban, AC, public radio and religion.  Arbitron and Edison state that the data they’ve collected can tell radio programmers something about how their P1s use digital platforms such as online radio, social media such as Twitter, their use of online video and much more.  News/talk and public radio programmers are probably very aware of how different their P1s are even though much of public radio programming these days is spoken-word.  This data shows just how different these two P1s are when it comes to digital media perceptions and usage.  Also, for this report Arbitron and Edison groups sports with news/talk and, considering how different sports talk and news/talk P1s tend to be from a purely demographic perspective, TALKERS editors can’t help but hope they will break sports and news/talk into separate formats when conducting next year’s study.  Some of the data programmers of news/talk, sports and public radio stations might find useful includes:

  • Of the format P1s who’ve listened to online radio in the past week, public radio comes in #2 with 44% reporting they’ve done so while news/talk/sports P1s are #6 with 31% doing the same.
  • News/talk/sports P1s aren’t the biggest Pandora fans relative to the other format P1s.  Just 14% of news/talk/sports fans reported listening to Pandora within the last week while 29% of public radio P1s reported the same.
  • Public radio P1s are big podcast fans with 34% reporting they’ve listened to a podcast in the past month.  That’s far and away above religious at #2 (16%) and #3 news/talk/sports (15%).
  • Public radio P1s are big tablet (iPad, etc.) fans with 42% owning one.  News/talk/sports P1s are close behind at #3 (34%).  Country fans and classic rock/classic hits and were at the bottom of this category respectively (24% and 23%).
  • News/talk/sports P1s are the least likely of all format P1s to have a social network profile – 58% claim to have one – although public radio P1s were fourth with 71% claiming to have one.
  • Not surprisingly, news/talk/sports P1s are big in-car users, ranking fourth with 92% reporting in-car listening.  Though news/talk/sports P1s aren’t the highest ranking format P1s to also use CDs or mp3 players in the car, they are fans of satellite radio with 19% (second only to rock P1s) reporting using satellite radio in the car.

wood logoGary Allen Calls it a Career at WOOD-AM/FM, Grand Rapids After 31 Years.  Saying he still has lots of things he wants to do, WOOD-AM/FM, Grand Rapids morning drive personality Gary Allen is retiring from the station on June 21 after a 31-year career at the station – the last 23 of which has been spent waking up the market.  He’s just the fourth morning host in WOOD’s 89-year history and currently the longest-running allengarymorning host in Grand Rapids radio.  Allen says, “I’ve made this decision because I still have lots of things I want to do, especially to stay active volunteering with numerous area non-profits, none of which will involve me answering to a 3:00 am alarm!  I made this decision with the pride of knowing I’ve had the great honor of informing and entertaining our West Michigan listeners for over three decades.”  Clear Channel vice president and market manager for West Michigan Tim Feagan states, “We thank Gary for his tireless service to WOOD Radio and Clear Channel Media and Entertainment.  Gary will always be a part of the Clear Channel and WOOD Radio family and you’re likely to hear him on occasion hosting special projects and programs for us on WOOD Radio.  After 32 years on the air in West Michigan we truly wish him well as he begins his very much-deserved retirement.  Gary’s the Iron Man of West Michigan radio.  He’s not only tireless in his service to our terrific WOOD listeners but he’s also been a tireless and consistent contributor to so many charities in our great community.  He’s always giving, always offering to help.  He’s got a big heart and a tiny ego, and that’s really a rarity in our business.  It’s been a real joy to work with him for many years.”

beasleyBeasley Broadcasting Reports Q1 Revenue Up 6.5%.  The company reports that’s an increase of $1.5 million in revenue for the first quarter of 2013 compared to the same quarter one year ago and that it “reflects strength in the company’s Philadelphia, Las Vegas and Fort Myers market clusters including the acquisition of KOAS-FM in Las Vegas in the 2012 third quarter.”  Speaking about the Q1 results, chairman and CEO George Beasley states, beasleygeorge“The solid first quarter revenue growth led to another period of SOI (station operating income) growth, as consolidated SOI increased 4.1% year-over-year.  First quarter SOI margins also remain healthy at 32.7% but declined slightly from last year as station operating expenses rose due to our investments in our local sales teams.  Beyond our company-wide focus on programming and ratings which serve as the foundation for the success of our on-air and digital advertising platforms, we continue to strengthen our balance sheet.  During the first quarter, we made repayments totaling $1.0 million against the credit facility, reducing total bank debt to $115.7 million at March 31, 2013, from $123.4 million at the end of last year’s first quarter.”

kxtg logoOdds & Sods.  There are some sports play-by-play affiliations to report as Alpha Broadcasting’s sports talk KXTG-AM, Portland announces a multi-year extension to continue airing Oregon Ducks football and Men’s basketball on the station…..Oakland Raiders football moves from CBS Radio’s alternative KITS, San Francisco “Live 105” to Entercom’s sports talk KGMZ, San Francisco “95.7 The Game.”  On days when there are conflicts with Oakland A’s baseball, Raiders games will air on sister classic rock “K-Fox” simulcast KUFX and KUZX…..NBC Sports Radio afternoon drive hosts Donovan McNabb and Mark Malone got a chance to speak on their program with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell prior to last night’s first round of the NFL Draft.  The duo broadcast their nationally syndicated program from New York’s Radio City Music Hall.

schultzedEd Schultz Weekend Program to Debut on MSNBC May 11.  The Los Angeles Times’ Show Tracker column indicates the weekend gig that was planned for MSNBC talent Ed Schultz – who gave up his weeknight prime time show at the end of March – will hit the air the weekend of May 11.  When the announcement was first made that Schultz would be changing his role at the cable news/talk network, it was believed the show would begin airing in early April.  Now, it appears the delay is over and “Ed heads” will get their fix in a couple of weekends.

riverageraldoCumulus New York to Produce Second Annual Job Fair; Geraldo to Broadcast Live.  This will be the second year in a row that Cumulus Media’s New York City radio stations have collaborated to present the “Putting America Back to Work” job fair at the city’s Jacob Javitts Center.  This year’s event will take place on Tuesday, May 7 and will feature news/talk WABC, hot AC WPLJ and country WNSH “Nash FM 94.7.”  During the event WABC’s Geraldo Rivera will broadcast his program live from the Javitts Center from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.

katzWCAPJeff Katz Launches Daily Commentary.  Dubbed, “The Katz Commentary,” talk radio pro Jeff Katz begins distributing his daily, 60-second product on Monday, April 29.  Katz, a three-time Associated Press award-winning broadcaster will contribute a daily commentary for the legendary New England station WCAP-AM 980 which is licensed to the Boston suburb of Lowell.  “The Katz Commentary” will air in both morning drive and afternoon drive.  Katz states, “I am thrilled to be able to offer my opinions once again on a daily basis to the people of New England.  WCAP is one of the great heritage stations in America and I am honored that they have decided to add my unique perspective to their great station.  While ‘The Katz Commentary’ will certainly address the issues of the day, I will also add in some thoughts and perspectives in the areas of positive psychology and self-growth.  ‘The Katz Commentary’ can best be described as, ‘Not Left, Not Right, Just Real.’”  Katz (l) is pictured here with WCAP, Lowell owner Sam Poulten (r).

coxmediagroupFamily Sues Cox Media Group for Illegal Use of Son’s Photo.  Nashville-area couple Bernard and Pamela Holland are suing Cox Media Group for WHPT, Tampa’s use of a photo of their son Adam – who has Down Syndrome – as part of the artwork for a feature called “Retarded News.”  Here’s the back story:  The photo of Adam Holland was taken in 2004 and posted by an art teacher – apparently legitimately – showing Adam holding up a drawing he’d made.  The photo was used by WHPT and altered so the paper Adam is holding reads “Retarded News.”  The Holland family learned about the image in 2012 and contacted the station.  At that time, program director Michael Sharkey explained the bit was not about making fun of handicapped people but about stupid things people do.  He apologized to the family and the photo’s use was discontinued.  Now, the family is suing Cox, Oswego, New York-based Sign Generator (which also used the image) and a Minnesota man who’s also posted the image on his Flickr account and made derogatory comments about Adam.  According to Courthouse News Service, the family “is seeking compensatory and punitive damages for invasion of privacy, misappropriation of likeness, defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and violations of the Tennessee Personal Rights Protection Act, and wants to stop the publication and distribution of the photos.”  TALKERS magazine’s legal department says this is a case where it’s expected that those being sued will wish to settle.  The issue of copyright is only relative to the person who took and posted the photo (the teacher or school).  The issue that should concern the company is either intentional or reckless infliction of emotional distress.  Harrison Strategies senior partner, attorney Matthew B. Harrison, states, “It’s going to be difficult for the station or company to claim they didn’t know what they were doing was wrong.  They can’t claim it was an accident so unless they want to go to court to try to show there was no emotional distress suffered by the family, they’re going to want to settle this.  It’s an example of an all-too-common practice of businesses using the multitude of images out there on the internet, a) without permission and, b) without looking ahead to some very possible consequences that could lead to legal troubles.”

wbz-fm logoCBS Radio Names Bob Socci New England Patriots Play-By-Play- Announcer.  Replacing the legendary Gil Santos was going to be a tough chore for CBS Radio’s WBZ-FM, Boston “98.5 The Sports Hub” – flagship for the Patriots Radio Network.  Santos retired after the 2012 season after 36 years calling Patriots football games. soccibob Now, the station announces that play-by-play pro Bob Socci will join color man Scott Zolak in the booth beginning this season.  CBS Radio Boston vice president of programming Mike Thomas states, “Bob has more than 16 years of play-by-play experience.  We were impressed with his extensive work and expertise calling various football and baseball games and he’s a local guy with great knowledge of the Patriots.  No doubt, Bob has big shoes to fill, but we are excited about this new era of play-by-play with Bob and Scott.”  Socci’s play-by-play experience includes coverage of the U.S. Naval Academy football team.  He is also the lead announcer for CBS Sports Network‘s coverage of Patriot League college basketball.

ramseyWHO13Dave Ramsey Continues Spring Tour.  Nationally syndicated money talk superstar and best-selling author Dave Ramsey continues rolling across the country producing live events.  He’s pictured here with Clear Channel’s WHO, Des Moines “NewsRadio” staff that includes general sales manager Mary Grieg (2nd row on the right) and morning show host Bonnie Lucas (3rd row on the right) along with the rest of the WHO sales staff.  Ramsey was in Des Moines to present his intimate “Building Your Legacy Live Event” to a sold-out crowd.  The program discusses how to win with money, strengthen marriages and lead your children with confidence.  His daughter, Rachel Cruze, joined Ramsey on stage.  Ramsey worked with local affiliate WHO to promote the event.  WHO program director Van Harden says, “At WHO Radio, we are incredibly excited about Dave Ramsey coming to Des Moines for his Living a Legacy live event.  We’ve always known that Iowa is ‘Ramsey Country,’ but we found out again when we offered these tickets for sale and Dave had one of his fastest sell-outs ever.  This is the kind of radio that really hits home and we’re glad to have it on WHO.”  Ramsey was also in Austin this week on Tuesday where he hosted his “EntreLeadership 1 Day Event” before a record crowd at Riverbend Centre.  Ramsey, along with speaker Chris Hogan, spoke to more 1,300 attendees about how to run a business using the same common sense principles that Ramsey practices in his own company of more than 300 team members.  Local affiliate KJCE vice president and market manager Alan Kirshborn states, “We always look forward to welcoming Dave Ramsey and his team for an event in Austin.  In Chapter 13 of EntreLeadership, Dave describes three things successful people never skip.  In my opinion this event should be added to the list!”

cruseleeLee Cruse to Take Over Midday Show on WVLK-AM, Lexington.  WLEX-TV, Lexington, Kentucky morning and noon newscaster Lee Cruse will become the 10:00 am to 12:00 noon talk show host on Cumulus Media’s WVLK-AM beginning May 1, replacing the retiring Sue Wylie.  Cruse previously hosted a talk show at Clear Channel’s crosstown WLAP but that program ended as a result of budget cuts.  Cruse tells the Lexington Herald-Leader his show will be a bit lighter than Wylie’s.  “I’m looking for more light and fun.  It won’t mean we won’t talk about things like Boston and other things happening here in our community, but I’m always looking for the laugh.  Always.”

norrisedWJZ-FM, Baltimore Morning Host Ed Norris Hospitalized After Motorcycle Accident.  Morning drive co-host Ed Norris – one half of the Norris & Davis program on CBS Radio’s sports talk “105.7 The Fan” – is still hospitalized after an accident in northern Harford County, Maryland.  According to the Baltimore Sun, Norris was riding his motorcycle and swerved to avoid a truck and had to lay down his bike.  The paper reports his injuries are not life threatening and one report indicates he may have a broken arm.

nfldraft logoNFL’s 2013 Draft Draws Sports Talk Radio to NYC.  The biggest off-season activity in the NFL’s yearly schedule takes place beginning tonight at Radio City Music Hall in New York and the sports radio networks are covering it in full force.  Fox Sports Radio will air its first-ever, two-night draft event, sponsored by Bridgestone.  Fox NFL Insider Jay Glazer will lead the first-round coverage on Thursday joined by former USC Trojan and Fox Sports Radio host Petros Papadakis and current NFL linebacker and Fox Sports Radio host Kirk Morrison.  The second and third rounds of the draft will be covered by Jason Smith and Morrison.  NBC Sports Radio’s Jon Stashower will broadcast his weeknight talk show from the venue tonight for the first round of the draft.  The program airs from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm and will feature special guests including fellow NBC Sports Radio colleague and former New York Giants wide receiver Amani Toomer.  And as TALKERS reported earlier in the week, ESPN Radio’s Mike Hill and Mark Schlereth will broadcast from the draft and will feature the additional analysis of ESPN’s John Clayton and Mel Kiper, Jr.

nooryspacecamp‘Coast to Coast AM’ Host George Noory Participates in Space Day.  The Premiere Networks nationally syndicated talk host is pictured here at Jefferson Elementary School in Riverside, California speaking with a student during “Space Day” activities at the school.  George Noory was the keynote speaker at the 15th annual Space Day event at Jefferson Elementary School sponsored by Lockheed Martin.  The event drew nearly 1,600 students from four local elementary schools who spent the day learning how environmental scientists and aeronautical engineers use science and math to explore space and protect the environment.  The students also experienced and participated in more than 50 hands-on activity stations with space exploration and environmental related themes.  Noory presented an inspiring and engaging presentation to students on the importance of learning math, science and technology, as well as always being curious so they could become life-long learners.  He challenged the youngsters — who ranged from second to sixth graders and were already well accustomed to using Facebook, Instagram and smartphone technology — to ask questions, seek answers and find their own truths.

allianceforwomeninmediaAlliance for Women in Media Lobbies Obama Administration on FCC Chairman Issue.  The Alliance for Women in Media is letting the Obama Administration know it is concerned about diversity and inclusion relative to the broadcasting industry and wants the White House to take that into consideration when it nominates a new FCC chairman to replace outgoing chairman Julius Genachowski.  The organization’s president Erin Fuller says, “The Alliance for Women in Media has been encouraged by the past appointments of commissioners that share our priorities of diversity and inclusion.  We eagerly await the FCC to reach full composition, and stand ready to assist in areas including research, public education and promoting the role of all forms of media in our society.”   The AWM says it “strongly believes the FCC needs leaders committed to reversing the extraordinarily low representation of minorities and women in media and telecom ownership, procurement and employment, yet the representation of women and minorities remains disproportionately low in industries overseen by the FCC.  These industries collectively represent one-sixth of our nation’s economy.”  The letter to the White House notes that “minority and women’s participation in broadcast ownership are particularly at risk, as they continue to decline rapidly.  As the nation becomes increasingly diverse, the signers of this letter encourage our president to address these issues by nominating leaders who will assign the highest priority to racial and ethnic minority and women’s participation in the nation’s most influential industries.”

dyerjohnJimmy Hayes to Retire from Cox Enterprises President and CEO Post; Executive Structure Transitions Announced.  Jimmy Hayes has served as president and CEO of Cox Enterprises since 2008 but now he will retire from the company in April of 2014 and John Dyer, who becomes chief operating officer of Cox Enterprises, will succeed him when he steps down.  Hayes will maintain a seat on the company’s board of franklindougdirectors.  In related moves, Doug Franklin, currently president of Cox Media Group, moves up to become EVP and chief financial officer of Cox Enterprises.  Cox Media Group executive vice president Bill Hoffman moves up to become president of Cox Media Group.  Cox Enterprises chairman Jim hoffmanbillKennedy says of Hayes, “Jimmy has led an impressive career at Cox, and I consider it a privilege having worked alongside him for so many years.  I thank Jimmy for his loyalty and service to Cox, and am delighted to work with him over the next 12 months to carefully and thoughtfully transition Cox’s next senior leadership team.”  Kennedy also addressed Hoffman’s rise to president of Cox Media Group.  “Bill is a talented senior executive who will provide strong leadership, continuity and direction at Cox Media Group.  His innate understanding of the integration of broadcast, print and digital media will help ensure Cox outlets maintain their enviable rankings in a highly competitive media landscape.”

quincyjohnWTMA, Charleston Names John Quincy PD.  Cumulus Media’s WTMA, Charleston, South Carolina — “Charleston’s Big Talker” announces John Quincy is promoted from assistant program director to program director of the station.  Quincy also serves as producer of the station’s morning program “Tara on TMA” hosted by Tara Servatius.  Quincy has worked in the Charleston market since 1981 and he’s been with WTMA since 2002.  He says, “I’m honored to have the opportunity to helm this legendary radio station.  As WTMA celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2014, I’m more passionate than ever about its news/talk format.”

michaelsnickImaging Master Suggests Slowing Down Voice Presentations to Be Noticed in “Hyper-Communicated World.”  Highly respected radio/TV voice-over and imaging professional Nick Michaels, author of the concept, “over-communicated world,” tells TALKERS that we are now quickly moving past it to what he describes as the “hyper-communicated world” which he says can be “a very uncomfortable place.”  He says, “One of the downsides of too many messages is the inability to focus on any one thing long enough to enjoy it.  The by-product of the over-communicated world is the feeling that life is moving faster, even though we are sitting still.  An occasional ride on a roller coaster is fun, but living on one is a nightmare.”  Michaels suggests that radio personalities and commercial producers can make their work stand out in this dizzying environment by stepping back and slowing things down by adding drama and variety to their pacing.  He advises, “Media, and especially advertising and promotion, can take advantage of this by making their messages slower and lower.  In audio messages, speak softly and use the power of the pause. In the over-communicated world, messages that subliminally make you feel more comfortable have an advantage over those that do not. wgstlogoClear Channel to Return WGST-AM, Atlanta to News/Talk.  The Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Rodney Ho tips us that Clear Channel Media and Entertainment plans to drop the Spanish sports on WGST-AM, Atlanta and return to news/talk with a syndicated lineup of stars including Premiere NetworksGlenn Beck, independently syndicated financial talk sensation Dave Ramsey, Talk Radio Network rising star Andrea Tantaros and “The Wall Street Journal This Morning” featuring Gordon Deal for AM drive.  The rest of the schedule is not known at this time.  It’s been eight months since CC dropped the news/talk – including local hosts Rob Johnson in mornings and Rusty Humphries (who did a separate program from his successful TRN syndicated show) in PM drive and opted for Spanish sports talk via ESPN Deportes.

cunninghamkeithKeith Cunningham Named Vice President of Programming at Clear Channel Seattle.  Moving in from his most recent position as broadcast consultant for Jacobs Media, Keith Cunningham takes the VP of programming position and will be in charge of the programming at Clear Channel Media and Entertainment’s cluster in Seattle.  Cunningham says, “The past seven years with Jacobs Media has been a wonderful experience and I feel fortunate to now have the opportunity to return to Clear Channel to work with Seattle’s great brands like ‘Kiss,’ KUBE, KJR-AM and FM and ‘The Brew.’  The Clear Channel Seattle cluster is well positioned for growth – the resources available to the team are second to none and each brand is loaded with great talent, both on and off the air.”  The company’s Seattle properties include: hip hop KUBE, classic hits KJR-FM, rock KKBW “The Brew,” CHR KBKS “106.1 Kiss FM,” and sports talk simulcast KJR-AM and KNBQ-FM.

koa broncosClear Channel’s KOA, Denver Extends Deal with NFL’s Broncos.  The relationship between Clear Channel’s KOA, Denver and the Denver Broncos is extended for another four years through the 2017 season.  As part of the new deal, Broncos play-by-play will also air on Clear Channel’s classic rock KRFX “103.5 The Fox” beginning with the 2013 season.  As in the past, the relating programming includes exclusive interviews with starting quarterback Peyton Manning, executive vice president of football operations John Elway and head coach John Fox as well as Broncos-themed talk shows.  KOA’s Dave Logan is entering his 24th season in the Broncos broadcast booth and 17th season as the radio play-by-play voice of the team.  Former Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey will be back for his second year as color commentator.  KOA serves as the flagship for more than 60 affiliate stations in nine states.

kirofm logoKIRO-FM, Seattle Adds Weekend Boat Show.  Bonneville Seattle’s news/talk KIRO-FM announces the addition of “KIRO Radio On the Water” – a one-hour Sunday morning program hosted by Captain Bob McLaughlin.  The program promises to discuss “nautical subjects from the latest boat maintenance techniques and models; to water sports and safety tips; to the cruise ship industry and marine life in the Puget Sound.”  McLaughlin is not just any boat aficionado, he’s a founder and board member of Seawolf Rescue and Research, a non-profit organization that provides the expertise and equipment to rescue and relocate wild marine and terrestrial animals, while documenting the process for future educational and research opportunities. The group has conducted research and observational work for both the U.S. and Canadian governments.  McLaughlin took part in the only successful reintroduction of an orphaned marine mammal being reunited with its family, and has co-produced an Emmy and Columbia Peabody award-winning documentary on the plight of killer whales.

webbbrewerDavid Webb Explores Immigration with Governor Jan Brewer.  With the subject of immigration reform front-and-center, SiriusXM Patriot channel evening talk host David Webb conducted a special one-hour interview program with Arizona Governor Jan Brewer called “David Webb’s American Forum with Jan Brewer” that aired on April 23 (encore airings will take place on April 27 at 10:00 am and 7:00 pm ET).  Topics covered included immigration, border security, states’ rights and responsibilities.  Webb and Governor Brewer posed for a photo at the satcaster’s New York studios.

sileowriterTHE BEACH — I write this article from the infamous “Beach of Radio” at this time.  The reason?  My own stupidity and how I acted on the air at WQAM in Miami.  As many of you know, I am a VERY emotional radio host – almost to a point where many people think I could actually use a doctor that has a pen and note pad.  I was fired from WQAM for the things I said on the air.  Yes, things I said on the air.  You see, I am one of the VERY few sports talk radio host in America that actually gets ratings and revenue.   As my old program director at WDAE — Steve Versnick — would say, “You do 90% of what’s great in radio, the other 10%, maybe the worst.”

If a station has a sports team on their airwaves, they are a broadcast partner and should be treated as any other radio host on a station’s airwaves.  In this form, I failed and I was rightfully fired.  Exiting a station after such a crazy thing will define your next gig.  If you take to Twitter and stupidly say stuff like, “I’ll never change,” well…

Then, it promotes even more living together and sex with strangers and the humor of meeting a possible mass murderer.

That show commands the highest spot rates of any comedy show this year.  It is on Fox.

Entercom operates rock WAAF, news/talk WRKO and sports talk outlets WEEI-FM and WEEI-AM but the donation to The One Fund to assist in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing comes from the company as a whole, states Boston VP and market manager Jeff Brown, “On behalf of over 2,000 Entercom employees across the country and our incredible Entercom team here in Boston, we are honored to donate $25,000 to The One Fund to help assist the victims and the families of the Boston Marathon tragedy.”

davisbobMinneapolis Talk Host Apologizes After Comments About Newtown Families.  KTCN, Minneapolis morning drive co-host Bob Davis – half of the Emmer and Davis morning program – apologized to the families of the Newtown massacre almost a week after making comments in connection with the move for gun legislation.  According to a report in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, on April 12 Davis said, “I have something I want to say to the victims of Newtown or any other shooting, I don’t care if it’s here in Minneapolis or anyplace else: Just because a bad thing happened to you doesn’t mean that you get to put a king in charge of my life.  I’m sorry that you suffered a tragedy, but you know what?  Deal with it, and don’t force me to lose my liberty, which is a greater tragedy than your loss.  I’m sick and tired of seeing these victims trotted out, given rides on Air Force One, hauled into the Senate well, and everyone is … terrified of these victims. I would stand in front of them and tell them, ‘Go to hell.’”  The paper reports that a couple of days later he tried to explain his comments, then four days after that issued an apology for the “pain those words may have caused.”  Sandy Hook, Connecticut resident Bob Greene posted a comment on the Star-Tribune website and sent Davis an email offering to pay his air fare for him to come to Connecticut and repeat the words he said in front of the Newtown families.  Greene says he has not had a reply from Davis.  The paper’s report of the incident notes the program lost one advertiser over the affair.

sabowalterSabo Sez: Regardless of No-Buy Lists, Controversy Is Good for Radio and Should Be Sold as Such.  According to noted radio consultant Walter Sabo, for decades TV shows promoting murder, violence, unmarried sex partners (Gilmore Girls) and anal bleaching (TMZ), have commanded high rates for spots from General Motors, Chrysler, Ford, Sony, Verizon, AT&T and all your favorites.  Why aren’t those shows on do-not-buy lists?  In a new column posted today, Sabo writes, “It’s because watching those shows is not a profound, intimate experience. Those shows are watched passively.  They command no engagement resulting in no complaints. However their content is as ‘controversial’ as any radio show and they have the bonus of a visual component.”  Sabo continues, “Listening to a talk radio show is a 100% foreground experience. Unlike music, talking on the radio commands 100% attention.  The listener is ENGAGED with the show.  The big buzzword at the ad agencies right now is ENGAGEMENT.  An emotional listener is an engaged listener.  Happy, angry, passionate listeners are worth a premium price per spot.”  To read Walter Sabo’s entire piece, click here.

duncanchrisWXOS, St. Louis Pairs Up Anthony Stalter with Chris Duncan for Middays.  Hubbard Broadcasting’s St. Louis sports talker “101 ESPN” fills the midday show being vacated by Bernie Miklasz with afternoon drive co-host (and former St. Louis Cardinals star) Chris Duncan and sports talk pro Anthony Stalter.  The show will debut on May 1 and doesn’t stalteranthonyhave a name but WXOS program director Chris “Hoss” Neupert says, “Chris Duncan and Anthony Stalter have proven themselves as show hosts in other time slots, and listeners have really responded to both of them on the air.  We’re confident that they will work well together as co-hosts, and we’re looking forward to their show’s debut next month.”  Duncan has been with the station since 2011 and most recently was one of the three co-hosts of the PM drive show “The Fast Lane.”  Stalter has been with WXOS since March of 2012. He broke into sports radio with Clear Channel’s WDFN, Detroit and served as the station’s on-site producer for Pistons’ broadcasts. He was also a reporter for both Pistons and Lions postgame coverage.  As a journalist, he was an NFL columnist for the WashingtonPost.com’s expert panel, “The League,” and he continues to write NFL-related columns for 101sports.com.

striderphilThe Conclave Hires Phil Strider.  Conclave executive director Bob Shannon announces radio veteran Phil Strider has been hired to create and sell sponsorships for “Conclave 38: The Learning Conference” scheduled for July 17-19 at the Doubletree Hotel in Minneapolis.  Commenting on the hiring, Shannon says, “My ideal candidate needed to have national sales experience, a programing background, and have an intimate knowledge of how special the Conclave is.  Phil’s got it all. ”  Strider’s background includes independent syndication services as well as management, sales and programming stints at Westwood One; Jones Radio Network; Metro Networks; KZOK, Seattle; and KBPI, Denver.

RIP Al Neuharth: He reinvented the only medium older than radio

BLOCK ISLAND — Especially after last week, talk radio should heed the words of a media giant we now mourn: “They want to trust whatever voices they’re listening to.”

Allen H. Neuharth was the Gannett chairman who founded USA TODAY, and later helped create a The Newseum, the museum of news, which warrants adding an entire day to your next trip to Washington.

His 1989 autobiography “Confessions of an S.O.B.” is still canny advice.

Al was a bigger-than-life figure, always influential, often controversial.  He died Friday at his home in Cocoa Beach, Florida, 89.
