PPM Analysis: The #1 Club. TALKERS magazine managing editor Mike Kinosian presents this “bonus” ratings feature that spotlights the stations that reached the #1 rank in their respective markets in both weekly, 6+ AQH share and in cume across all radio formats, according to Nielsen Audio’s July 2020 PPM survey. As the result of the COVID-19 effects on the nation’s sports leagues, sports talk radio is just beginning to be able to talk about live sports. This has left the sports talk format in the unusual position of not one sports talk station ranking #1 in its markets during the July 2020 survey. iHeartMedia and Dan Patrick Agree to Launch The Dan Patrick Podcast Network. This new project from iHeartMedia and sports media personality Dan Patrick will create The Dan Patrick Podcast Network that will host a slate of iHeartRadio original podcasts co-produced by Patrick, iHeartRadio and Workhouse Media. Patrick comments, “Who doesn’t love a great story! I love that I can introduce great storytellers through my partnership with iHeartRadio. Conal Byrne and his team have been outstanding in helping us pull together our launch slate of podcasts in sports and entertainment. I’m also thrilled that one of them, ‘The Battle for L.A,’ is already partnered for television and film with first-in-class, Oscar-winning Michael Sugar and his phenomenal team at Sugar23. I promise nobody is going to be bored with these shows.” Three new podcasts will launch soon as a part of the partnership. “The Battle For LA,” from Joy Road Entertainment, tells the story of the birth of professional basketball in Los Angeles and how the city’s two disparate franchises helped shape not just the NBA, but shifted the influence of sports and culture to the West Coast. “Two Guys From Hollywood” (subtitled “We Don’t Dish, We Serve”) is a weekly podcast from literary agent Alan Nevins and celebrity chef and columnist Joey Santos. “Meeting Tom Cruise” is hosted by die-hard Tom Cruise fans Jeff Meacham (“John Oppenhol” on the hit ABC comedy Black•ish) and Joel Johnstone (“Archie Clearly” on the Emmy-Award winning series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), this weekly podcast features celebrity guests telling their own incredible stories about meeting the legendary star.

TALKERS News Notes. The Carton watch continues in the Big Apple as the New York Post reports that Entercom’s sports talker WFAN is preparing to make an employment offer to former morning co-host Craig Carton, who is serving the remainder of his fraud sentence under house arrest after a year in prison. Andrew Marchand writes that Carton has also received some interest from Beasley Media Group’s WPEN-FM, Philadelphia “97.5 The Fanatic” to host mornings. Regardless, Marchand says that WFAN is the favorite and afternoon drive is the likely daypart for Carton as current afternoon co-host Joe Benigno is leaning toward retirement…..Dr. Anthony Fauci is the guest on this week’s WTOP, Washington-produced podcast, “Colors: A Dialogue on Race in America,” hosted by JJ Green and Chris Core. In the episode, Dr. Fauci notes that African Americans face a “double-whammy” when considering the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on the Black community. They are more likely to be infected with COVID-19 and are more likely to face a serious outcome as a result…..The nationally syndicated “Free Talk Live” program announces that it adds two new affiliate stations in Michigan. WMIQ-AM, Iron Mountain and WDMJ-AM, Marquette. “Free Talk Live” says both stations have been purchased by AMC Partners, the owners of longtime affiliate WCHT-AM, Escanaba, and have been made into a news/talk trimulcast…..Edison Research is presenting the next event in its Lunchtime Webinar series on Thursday (8/27) at 1:00 pm ET. Edison says “Listening Habits During Quarantine: A Share of Ear Report, will include research SVP Tom Webster presenting a 15-minute update on the overall listener landscape, with insights gained from Edison Research’s Share of Ear study. Specific focus will be placed on how podcast listening has been affected by quarantine…..iHeartMedia Tallahassee/Panama City and Florida State University – along with multimedia rightsholder Learfield IMG College – agree to a six-year deal to be the official broadcast and play-by-play home of the Seminoles, effective immediately. As part of the pact, country WTNT-FM will live broadcast all upcoming football games for the 2020-21 athletics season; FSU men’s basketball games will air exclusively on rock WXSR-FM “X101.5 FM”; women’s basketball on hip hop WTLY-AM/W243EG “Throwback 96.5 FM”; and men’s baseball on news/talk WFLA-FM…..Leading podcast network PodcastOne, a subsidiary of LiveXLive Media, Inc., signs up Sistine and Sophia Stallone, to an exclusive podcast and vodcast production and distribution deal. The Stallone Sisters’ show “UNWAXED” features the sisters discussing adulting, pop culture, their single lives, their careers as actresses, models, and lifestyle influencers and their unique experiences as part of one of Hollywood’s most prominent families…..Cumulus Media’s Westwood One and Imperative Entertainment announces the premiere of “In the Red Clay,” a 12-part true crime podcast that follows the most dangerous man in Georgia history, Billy Sunday Birt. Also, Westwood One welcomes “Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum” to the Westwood One Podcast Network. The interview-style show has reached more than 12 million downloads. In it, actor Michael Rosenbaum invites friends in the business into a casual environment where they are comfortable sharing their flaws, insecurities, and all the things that make them human. He says, “It is comforting for all of us to know that we are not the only ones facing challenges. By hearing how the biggest stars in the world deal with adversity, I hope my listeners can gain resolve and perspective. ‘Inside of You’ shines a big light onto mental health issues so we can normalize the conversations around them.”…..Virtual News Center adds adult contemporary KHKU, Kauai, Hawaii to its roster of affiliate radio stations. Kauai Broadcast Partners, LLC managing member Larry Fuss says, “I’ve been a fan of Virtual News Center for years. With the loss of our news guy, this certainly helps fill the void, and it sounds great, too.”

Auto Industry the Focus of Next RAB Open for Business Session. The next presentation in the RAB’s Open for Business live video series is titled, “Wheels Off! Insights Into the Auto Industry” featuring data from J.D. Power, taking pace at 1:00 pm ET on September 16. J.D. Power vice president, data and analytics Tyson Jominy will share the state of the auto industry including sales and market insights, providing sellers with the information they need to understand the new automotive landscape to help grow station revenue and drive automotive sales. The November presidential election and this week’s Republican National Convention; the riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin in the aftermath of the shooting of Jacob Blake by police and the protests in Louisville over the shooting death of Breonna Taylor; the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the U.S. and projections for future cases; the debate over opening schools and the outbreaks of COVID-19 cases at several colleges; China accuses a U.S. spy plane of disrupting its military exercises; the wildfires ravaging Northern California; and the impending landfall of Hurricane Laura in Texas and Louisiana were some of the most-talked-about stories on news/talk radio yesterday, according to ongoing research from TALKERS magazine.

Music Radio News and Career Moves. New York City hip hop outlet WQHT “Hot 97” has fired production department staffer Paddy Duke, a.k.a. Pasquale Raucci, after it was learned that he was one of eight Brooklyn teenagers charged in connection with the death of Yusuf Hawkins in 1989. Raucci was employed by the Emmis/MediaCo station for more than 25 years. His link to the high-profile case only became known to station staffers after the recent airing of the HBO documentary, “Yusuf Hawkins: Storm Over Brooklyn.” Raucci was not convicted of any of the felony charges leveled against him but he served probation and community service for the charge of carrying a bat as a weapon. Read The New York Times’ story here…..Programmer Scott Chase is promoted to director of group programming for Saga Communications. Chase has been serving as operations manager for the company’s Clarksville, Tennessee station group. He assumes the role vacated by Bob Lawrence last month. Chase says, “I love Saga Communications and I am very excited to make the move to the head office in Grosse Pointe. I know there are a lot of talented people out there, and I want to thank Ed Christian and [senior VP/operations] Chris Forgy for putting their confidence in me. We have an incredibly talented pool of general managers, programmers and air talent and I can’t wait to work with each and every one of them.”…..iHeartMedia announces the new lineup for Coffee Shop Radio, a 24/7 Channel on the iHeartRadio App that features acoustic rock and singer-songwriters. Beginning September 1, singers and songwriters including Andy Grammer, Jewel, Johnny Rzeznik from the Goo Goo Dolls, Matt Nathanson, Lewis Capaldi, AJR and Andrew McMahon will host exclusive shows and play never-before-heard versions of their biggest hits. In addition, each show will feature some of the best live performances from the iHeartRadio Theater over the past 25 years…..Entravision Communications Corporation unveils the new local morning radio program, the “Shoboy Show,” starring Edgar “Shoboy” Sotelo. The program premiers on Entravision stations: KKPS-FM, McAllen, Texas; KHHM-FM, Sacramento, and KCVR-FM, Stockton-Modesto. As part of this launch, Entravision has entered into an exclusive network sales agreement to represent the “Shoboy Show” nationally.

Round One of March PPM Data Released.  The first of four rounds of data from Nielsen Audio’s March 2020 PPM survey have been released for 12 markets including: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Nassau-Suffolk (Long Island), Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, San Jose, and Middlesex-Somerset-Union (New Jersey).  The March survey covered February 27 through March 25. You can see all the 6+ numbers from subscribing stations here.  TALKERS magazine managing editor Mike Kinosian provides his Ratings Takeaways from this batch of markets.  The Covid-19 crisis began hitting the U.S. halfway through this survey – around March 13 – and the big gainers were the all-news stations.  In New York, Entercom’s all-news stations WCBS-AM and WINS-AM were both up (weekly, 6+ AQH share) from the February survey – +0.5 and +1.1, respectively.  iHeartMedia’s KFI, Los Angeles rose 0.4 shares for a 4.2 share and the #5 rank in the market.  Nexstar Media’s news/talk WGN-AM, Chicago increased six-tenths for a 4.5 share and the #5 rank, while Entercom’s all-news WBBM-AM/WCFS-FM, Chicago spikes 1.9 shares – the biggest February to March jump in this group of 12 markets – to finish March with a 7.7 share and the #1 rank in Chicago.  Entercom’s all-news KCBS-AM, San Francisco is up 1.2 shares for a 9.9 share and the #1 rank.  Cox Media Group’s news/talk WSB-AM/WSBB-FM, Atlanta tacks on another 1.5 shares to finish March with a 12.9 share and its ninth straight #1 finish.  Entercom’s KYW-AM, Philadelphia added 1.9 shares for a 6.6 share and a leap from #8 to #3.  See Mike Kinosian’s Ratings Takeaways here.

KGO, San Francisco Brings John Rothmann Back for Evenings. Back in 2011, talk show host John Rothmann was let go from Cumulus Media’s news/talk KGO, San Francisco along with a number of other local air talent.  Now, nine years later Rothmann is back on the air holding down the 6:00 pm to 9:00 program (5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Saturdays).  Rothmann is featured in a story in The Jewish News of Northern California and he tells the paper that being on the air during this pandemic comes at a time that people want to connect. “There is a huge hunger for KGO as a community forum, and I’m helping fill that role, and people are responding.  My board is loaded from the time I come in until the time I head home.”  He adds, “People crave contact with others, and because we no longer have the physical contact, talk radio is the most intimate, immediate medium, and KGO is the only live, local talk show.”

WABC Launches New Weekend Show. Dubbed, “The Right vs The Left,” the Sunday afternoon show on Red Apple Media’s WABC, New York “TALKRADIO 77 WABC” “pits a WABC air personality on the right vs. well-known political commentators and activists on the left to offer listeners opposing sides of a range of current issues.”  This Sunday (4/19), WABC morning co-host Sid Rosenberg takes on left-leaning actor Michael Rapaport at 4:00 pm and WABC midday co-host Curtis Sliwa spars with “The Aggressive Progressive” Christopher Hahn at 5:00 pm.  WABC program director Dave LaBrozzi says, “At WABC, our goal is to present both sides of the story so that our listeners can get to the truth of every issue.  This special program does that in an entertaining joust between two strong, knowledgeable, opinionated-yet-open-minded personalities.  The result is engaging talk radio that pulls in the audience and keeps them there.”  The station says the program debuted last weekend with morning show co-host Bernard McGuirk going against Hahn and overwhelming response from listeners spurred it to set up the second and third matches, with the possibility of more right vs. left battles in the coming weeks.

President Trump Wanted to Host Daily Talk Radio Show; But Didn’t Want to Affect Rush Limbaugh’s Program. According to a piece in The New York Times, President Trump was eager to launch a daily, two-hour talk radio show in which he would take calls from Americans – without a call screener – to talk about the coronavirus pandemic.  However, he balked because he didn’t want to compete with conservative media icon and supporter Rush Limbaugh.  He would have wanted to do the program in afternoon, the time when Limbaugh’s Premiere Networks show airs live.

Davis, who passed away yesterday (4/15) at age 85 after a long illness.  In addition to his career as a broadcaster and businessman, Davis was a Pro Football Hall of Famer who was a key defensive player on the 1960s-era Green Bay Packers.  He won five NFL championships (including two Super Bowls) as a member of the team before retiring from the game in 1969.  All Pro Broadcasting owns hot AC KHTI and adult contemporary KATY-FM in the Riverside-San Bernardino market.  Davis also formed Milwaukee Radio Alliance LLC with Bill Lynett in 1996.  It owns adult contemporary WLDB-FM, alternative WLUM-FM, and oldies WZTI-AM.

Jim Bohannon and Westwood One Sign New Pact.  The overnight Jim Bohannon show is heard on more than 250 affiliate stations across the country via Westwood One.  Today, the company reports that it has signed Bohannon to a new multi-year contract to continue hosting the show beyond its current 33rd year.  As part of thisbohannonjim new deal, Westwood One is launching a new Jim Bohannon podcast and “Best of Bohannon” program, already slated to air on affiliates including: WLS-AM, Chicago; WBAP-AM, Dallas; KXL-FM, Portland; WTMJ, Milwaukee; and more.  Bohannon comments, “I’m delighted and honored to continue working with Westwood One.  It’s especially gratifying now that the new year finds me reaching even more stations with the weekly ‘Best of Bohannon’ broadcast.  Here’s to a fantastic 2017!”  ON a note unrelated to the new contract, Jim Bohannon has been selected to be one of the live crowd announcers for the Inaugural Parade in Washington, DC on January 20.  He will be introducing and describing the participating organizations to the throngs gathered along his location on Pennsylvania Avenue.

E.W. Scripps Hires Schenek to Lead Digital Content at Milwaukee Duo.  Most recently, Dan Schenek has been working for NBCUniversal’s “Access Hollywood” as a digital producer.  He’ll leave Los Angeles for Radio 620 WTMJ - WRS (662c)Milwaukee to take on the digital content director position for Scripps’ news/talk WTMJ and country WKTI.  He’s being charged with expanding the stations’ digital products, including growing wtmj.com, kticountry.com and the stations’ social media accounts. In addition, he’ll support the rapidly growing demand for video and podcasts.  Scripps Milwaukee vice president and general manager Tom Langmyer says, “Dan is an experienced digital leader that will take us beyond typical coverage and lead us to places that expand the overall content experience – the way our consumers expect it today.”  During his career, Schenek has also worked with CNN/HLN’s “Dr. Drew” show, with MTV in New York and CBS RADIO in Los Angeles.

Raback Named to Lead Pennsylvania Cluster for Cumulus Media.  The York-Lancaster-Reading, Pennsylvania operations of Cumulus Media has a new vice president/market manager as 17-year radio sales execrabackmatt Matt Raback is promoted to the position from his VP/sales post.  The six-station cluster includes news/talk WSBA, York; sports talk WGLD, York; classic hits WSOX, York; adult contemporary WARM, York; country WIOV-FM, Lancaster; and sports talk WIOV-AM, Lancaster.   York-Lancaster-Reading, PA.  Cumulus Pennsylvania RVP Ron Giovanniello states, “We are thrilled to recognize Matt’s talent with this opportunity to lead our terrific Cumulus team in York-Lancaster-Reading.  I’m very excited about the energy, enthusiasm and ideas that Matt will bring to our business in this great market and I’m looking forward to his contributions.”

Odds & Sods.  Kansas City sports talk personality Danny Parkins is exiting Entercom’s KCSP after six-plusparkinsdanny years with the station to take a yet-to-be-announced gig outside of KC.  Parkins co-hosts “The Drive” with Harrison Carrington in afternoons and the Kansas City Star reports that Carrington will continue to host the show with producer Ben Heisler…..After learning of a series of car break-ins perpetrated arummarkagainst Gwinnett and Forsyth County firefighters while they were out on call, WSB-AM, Atlanta talk show host Mark Arum solicited listeners to his show to donate to a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for the personal items stolen.  Initially, the goal was $1,000, but after hitting that mark, Arum raised it to $2,000.  Arum states, “I couldn’t believe the story when I heard it over the weekend.  Who would steal from people that risk their lives every day?  I know first responders don’t make a lot of money, so I wanted to help them out and try to replace the items that were stolen.”…..ESPN officially announces the move of the “Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz” from sports talk WEPN-FM to Spanish sportsle-batard-dan WEPN-AM in New York City.  The move happens on January 17.  Le Batard says, “We are glad New York has embraced our particular brand of nonsense.  We appreciate the opportunity to continue making fun of Jets fans now on 1050 AM.  Being on the ESPN Deportes station makes sense for us because Stugotz still hasn’t learned how to speak English.”…..Talk WZZR, West Palm Beach “Real Radio 94.3” recently partnered with Tito’s Handmade Vodka for the second annual “Touchdowns for Charity” fundraiser that involved Tito’s pledging to donate $350 to Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Autism and Related Disabilities for each touchdown pass scored by the Miami Dolphins during the football season.  The team’s 27 TDs resulted in a $10,000 donation.  WZZR personality The Greek promoted Tito’s commitment on-air throughout the program during the season on his midday show, “The Penthouse.”…..ABC Radio announces the debut of a new podcast hosted by ABC News chief business, economics and technology correspondent Rebecca Jarvis, titled “No Limits with Rebecca Jarvis,” focused on leading women in a variety of industries.  Each week Jarvis will speak with women in Hollywood, business, technology, fashion, comedy, food, sports and startups about how they built their empire and their wide-range of accomplishments.

gracies-logoGracie Awards Deadline Extended.  The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation is announcing it has extended the call for entries for the 42nd annual Gracie Awards to January 19, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. ET in response to high requests for extensions.  Alliance for Women in Media Foundation chair Kristen Welch says, “Now is a time, more than ever before, where we need to celebrate women for their exceptional work and contributions, especially in the media industry.”  The Gracies recognize exemplary programming created by, for and about women in radio, television, cable and interactive media.  Honorees are selected in national, local and non-commercial markets as well as among students.  The AWMF will accept all entries submitted after the originally published deadline of January 12 through January 19 with an additional $50 late fee.  Honorees will be announced in mid- to late-March.  The Gracies are the largest fundraising event by the AWM Foundation, the philanthropic arm of AWM that supports educational programs, charitable activities and scholarships to benefit women in the media.

miw-logoMIW Radio Group Mentoring Program Application Deadline Extended.  The Mentoring & Inspiring Women in Radio group is extending the application window for the 2017 Mildred Carter Mentoring Program through next Wednesday, January 18.  This experience pairs up-and-coming women who currently work in the radio industry with female professionals recognized as leaders in all aspects of radio broadcasting and media.  MIW Radio Group’s Mentoring Committee chair Lindsay Cerajewski comments, “This provides a wonderful opportunity for mentees to gain valuable insight, knowledge and access to some of the most influential women in radio.”  A total of four candidates from the radio broadcasting industry – within the sales, marketing, programming and digital disciplines – will be selected for the 2017 program.  To apply, click here.

More Music Radio News and Career Moves.  The “Full Metal Jackie” show – syndicated by Envisionfullmetaljackie Networks – is being added to the program schedule at Alpha Media’s KMKO-FM, Mankato, Minnesota.  The Jackie Kajzer-hosted metal show will air Sunday’s at 10:00 pm CT…..Programmer Garett Michaels is exercising his option to leave rock KFMB-FM, San michaelsgarettDiego where he’s been PD and afternoon host as the joint operating agreement between Midwest Television and Local Media San Diego ends.  He’ll remain in a consultant capacity…..The syndicated Walton & Johnson morning show is finding a new home at Townsquare Media’s rock KFTE, LaFayette, Louisiana “Planet Radio 105.1.”  It had been heard on Guaranty Broadcasting’s  classic rock WDGL, Baton Rouge.  Guaranty is suing the show on the grounds that it was not given the notice required by the contract…..Tamara Grant joins the Superadio-syndicated Michael Baisden show as senior producer.
