Rush Limbaugh and Premiere Networks Reach Agreement on Extension.  There was little doubt from most industry observers that talk radio superstar Rush Limbaugh and iHeartMedia’s Premiere Networks limbaughrushwould come to terms on an agreement to continue syndicating Limbaugh’s show.  Not surprisingly, today’s announcement from Premiere did not mention the terms of this new deal, but simply called it a “long-term, multi-platform agreement.”  Eight years ago, Limbaugh and Premiere announced a partnership agreement that was widely reported to have been worth $400 million.  The conventional wisdom is that changes in the radio industry and the backlash from the infamous “Sandra Fluke incident” have negatively affected Limbaugh’s ability to earn the type of ad dollars that would justify that kind of money this time around.  At the top of today’s program, however, Limbaugh told his listeners that the deal is for four years and he gets no regular salary but, presumably, a percentage of sales.  He said, “I have to make my numbers.”  In the press release, Premiere stated, “Ad revenue for ‘The Rush Limbaugh Show’ has also increased by 20% over last year, and the show continues to be the number one program in talk radio.”  Limbaugh celebrated his 28th anniversary in national syndication on Monday.  He said in the prepared statement, “After 28 fulfilling years, I seriously considered moving on to something else, but Rich [Bressler] and Bob [Pittman] were very persuasive.  I’m thrilled to be continuing.  And I really want to be on the air if the Russians find Hillary’s emails.”

Former Mercury Radio Arts and TheBlaze Chief Sued by Glenn Beck.  In a case filed in District Court of Dallas County, Texas on Friday (7/29), Glenn Beck is suing his former executive, Christopher Balfe, alleging among other things: Breach of Fiduciary Duty, Faithless Servant, Fraud, Breach of Contract, and more.  The suit mercuryradioarts logodoes not specify how much money Mercury Radio Arts is seeking from Balfe, but states it’s asking for actual, consequential and punitive damages; forfeiture of everything Balfe earned from Mercury since he first breached his duties, and more.  The lawsuit alleges that Balfe earned more than $13 million between 2009 and 2014 and calls it “a shockingly excessive amountbeckglenn that far exceeds appropriate compensation for companies of Mercury and TheBlaze’s size and financial performance.”  It also alleges that Balfe signed a lease for New York office space – the entire 12th floor of Five Bryant Park – for $2 million per year for 10 years that was “motivated by his own self-interest.”  The suit calls the $20 million liability an example of Balfe ignoring his duty to Mercury.  Beck comments on the case on TheBlaze’s balfechriswebsite, saying, “You have all heard me over the last couple of years describing how hard a time it has been.  Between being sick, turning over my company, etc…It culminates in a lawsuit that we filed Friday in Dallas between MRA and the former president.  I am embarrassed and saddened it has come to this.”  It’s difficult to read the suit and not come to the conclusion that Beck hired a man whom he considered a friend who was simply not qualified to serve in the positions in which he did.  Scribd has the complaint and you can read it here.

harrisonUpCloseFarOutsmallRare Ancient Limbaugh Audio Interview Discovered.  A 26-year-old audio transcription of a telephone conversation between Rush Limbaugh and Michael Harrison conducted during the summer of 1990 for a print article was discovered in the TALKERS archives this week during a routine “housekeeping” in the trade publication’s warehouse.  The interview originally served as the basis of a story in the third issue of TALKERS back in August of 1990 and has never-before been heard publicly as an audio conversation.  According to TALKERS VP/executive editor Kevin Casey, “This dusty cassette, originally implemented as the reference for a print piece, contains talk radio history gold.  The conversation between Rush and Harrison provides seminal information, issues and insights that set the stage for the basic foundation upon which the modern era of talk radio has been built.  It is fascinating, to say the least, and must-listening for any present-day student or practitioner of radio broadcasting.  The authenticity and passion expressed in their conversation lends a dimension to the material that could never be conveyed in print.”  At the time of the recording, Limbaugh’s nationally syndicated show, only in its second year at that point, was already considered a phenomenon having cleared almost 240 stations and challenging then-existent notions about the role of syndication in major market radio.  Harrison was in the process of publishing the first issue of TALKERS (originally described as “The Information-Radio Newspaper”) that summer and was gathering material ahead for the second and third issues.  The Limbaugh conversation was set for the third installment of the then-bi-harrisonLimbaughprint16weekly publication.  After the conclusion of the interview, the recording contains several minutes of ongoing conversation between the two discussing the new trade publication and Harrison’s vision of what it would be.  According to Harrison, “I was thinking totally print when conducting the interview – so I tossed the cassette in box of unfiled random stuff after it was transcribed for the newspaper not thinking that 26 years later the concept of ‘TALKERS’ would be an online ‘media station’ with elements of not only text and graphics – but audio and video as well.  And as far as my weekly podcast is concerned, this strikes at the core of what it is all about!”  Harrison is pictured here holding a copy of the original issue of TALKERS containing the interview.  The entire conversation is being made public on this week’s installment of the award-winning PodcastOne program “Up Close and Far Out with Michael Harrison.”  To listen to it in its entirety, please click here or click on the “Up Close and Far Out” player box located in the right-hand column of every page of Talkers.com and RadioInfo.com.

neerMBbook16WFAN, New York Personality Richard Neer Publishes Second Mystery Novel.  Did you know that The Martian began as a self-published book?  As did Still Alice and Legally Blonde. Do you think you’ve written a great book but the publishing industry won’t give it the attention it deserves?  Richard Neer of WFAN, New York has just released the second of his Riley King series of mysteries through Amazon and CreateSpace — cutting out the middleman.  Both are selling briskly without a traditional publisher.  “Publishers are skeptical that radio, other than a few syndicated giants, can sell books.  I’m happy to be proving themneerrichard wrong,” Neer says. His traditionally published book, FM, the Rise and Fall of Rock Radio was released in 2001 by Villard, and Neer believes that it wouldn’t stand a chance with a major publisher today.  “I’ve had radio friends with great stories to tell inform me that their manuscripts have been rejected because there aren’t enough sordid tales of sex and drugs.  They’re not interested in great writing —  just sensationalism and what seems trendy today.”  The Master Builders is the title of Neer’s latest effort.  As a result of promoting it on his WFAN sports talk radio show, his first novel, Something of the Night, is also selling well.  Both are murder mysteries featuring private investigator Riley King and his radio sidekick Rick Stone as they battle crime and corruption up and down the Eastern Seaboard.  “Just like with the music and film industry, there’s a revolution in publishing where traditional gatekeepers are less important.  People can be introduced to fine work that otherwise might be ignored.  It’s a lot more democratic.  Sometimes those books can be as important or entertaining as the big blockbusters,” Neer says.  “As much as I lament the demise of many great bookstores, most readers are buying online these days.”  Richard is available for interviews about the business of publishing your own work and can be contacted at Rneer@wfan.com.  All his books can be purchased at Amazon.com here.
