Sandi:  What did you do before becoming a media broker?

Bausemer:  Spent most of my time in radio and real estate.  I am also a real estate broker.  My radio business experience has been mostly operational as an AE, SM, GSM, GM, COO of small radio group and owner operator. I worked for a company called Group W for 10 years which bought and then became CBS Radio. I loved the business from the start. Real estate can be very lucrative but is tedious at best.

abramsonnancyNancy Abramson Joins Clear Channel as Director of Digital Affiliates.  Radio pro Nancy Abramson becomes part of the Clear Channel family in the newly created role of director, digital affiliates for national media groups.  Abramson spent almost 18 years with The Wall Street Journal Radio Network before exiting last month.  She will be based in New York and report to Julie Talbott, president of content and affiliate services for national media groups.  The company says that in this new position, Abramson will be focused on the company’s digital partnerships with radio ownership groups and stations.  She will provide a dedicated point of contact for communication and conducting business surrounding the company’s digital platforms including iHeartRadio as well as Clear Channel’s Premiere Networks programming, personality websites and audio streams.  Prior to her work with The Wall Street Journal Radio Network, Abramson held the role of manager network programming for ABC Radio Networks.  Talbott says of Abramson, “Nancy’s proven track record of successfully leading affiliate sales and marketing efforts in the news/talk format, as well as her amazing relationships with broadcasters, makes her a tremendous asset for us.  Her passion and expertise are a winning combination, and we are very fortunate to have her join our team.”

hannitySalem’s Hewitt and Prager Appear on FNC’s New Time “Hannity” Program.  As Fox News Channel shuffles its primetime lineup and Sean Hannity’s program moves to the 10:00 pm ET time slot, Salem Radio Network personalities Hugh Hewitt and Dennis Prager joined Hannity on his “Great American” panel last night (10/7).  FNC introduced the new addition to the primetime slate: Megyn Kelly’s “The Kelly File.”  Kelly’s show appears at 9:00 pm ET leading into “Hannity.”  Greta Van Susteren’s “On the Record” kicks off primetime at 7:00 pm with “The O’Reilly Factor” following at 8:00 pm ET.

geronimodonDon Geronimo Exits Sports Talk KHTK, Sacramento.  Although his photo and references to his 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm show are still on the KHTK website, reports are that radio pro Don Geronimo has exited the CBS Radio station.  Geronimo’s presence on the station has been replaced by Jason Ross and Dave “Deuce” Mason.  Geronimo had been with the Sacramento sports talker for several years, both in morning drive and during the afternoons daypart.  Geronimo and former partner Mike O’Meara had a long and successful run at WJFK, Washington when the station was a hot talk outlet in the 1990s.

Sara Lee Kessler On Air at WOR.  New York news pro Sara Lee Kessler is handling news anchor duties for Clear Channel’s news/talk WOR, New York as well as the company’s 24/7 News programming.  Kessler is well known to New Yorkers for her 18-year stint at WOR-TV.  She also worked at Merlin Media’s New York all-news venture WEMP.

bausemerharoldMEDIA BROKER SPOTLIGHT: Harold Bausemer – RadioStationsForSale.Net.  In this week’s installment of Media Broker Spotlight, Sandi Bergman of RadioTVDeals.com interviews media broker Harold Bausemer of RadioStationsForSale.Net located in Braintree, Massachusetts.  Bausemer has a background in radio having worked in just about every position in the business including AE, SM, GSM, GM, COO of a small group and as an owner operator.  But he also has a background as a real estate broker and as such he brings a bit of a different background to his media broker strategies.  He says, “Being in real estate, I am a believer in multiple listings and have co-brokered many deals which is not common in media brokering. Most brokers in this business have self-interest to the point of detriment to their listing clients. Usually (not always) I don’t ask who a listing of mine will be presented to by a co-broker. kxl logo‘FM News 101’ in Portland Wins Seven OAB Awards.  Alpha Broadcasting news/talk KXL, Portland “FM News 101” takes home seven Oregon Association of Broadcasters Awards, including Station of the Year for the 3rd consecutive year.  Other awards garnered by the station include: Best On Air Personality for Clyde Lewis, host of “Ground Zero with Clyde Lewis”; Best Newscast from Dan Mitchinson and Lacey Evans covering the Clackamas Town Center Shooting; Best Investigative Reporting from Rosemary Reynolds; and Best Single News Story from Dan Mitchinson.  Alpha Broadcasting director of programming Scott Mahalick states, “These awards honor the talent of a truly live and local team that is passionate about what they do.  I’m proud to be working with world class broadcasters.”  News director Rebecca Marshall adds, “I am so thrilled to see FM News 101 KXL receive this award again.  We have such a hard working team both out in the field and inside the station.  They’re real pros.  I feel lucky to be working with them.”

hartmannThom Hartmann Program Joins Lineup at Two Non-Coms.  The Thom Hartmann show is now part of the program schedule at public radio stations WBAI, New York and KBOO, Portland, Oregon.  As TALKERS reported last week, Hartmann’s show will also air on a new FM signal set to debut in Portland, KXRY “X-RAY FM.”  Thom Hartmann’s program has been serving public radio stations for several years now, providing commercial-free feeds of the show.

lipforddannyDanny Lipford Show Reaches 100-Affiliate Mark.  The independently syndicated, weekly two-hour “Today’s Homeowner with Danny Lipford” radio show hits the 100 affiliate milestone.  Mobile, Alabama-based Lipford says, “By using the same successful formula as our Emmy-nominated ‘Today’s Homeowner’ TV show, now in our 16th season on 221 stations, our radio program gives homeowners the most relevant and current home improvement information every week of the year.  Our listeners love the fun, fast-paced style of the show and our ability to make them laugh while giving them the information they crave.”

karelWWRL, New York Adds ‘Karel Show’ to Thursday Lineup.  Long Beach, California-based Karel has his syndicated radio program added to the Thursday evening lineup at WWRL, New York as part of a special block of programming dedicated to LGBT programming.  His program airs at 8:00 pm ET.  He says, “Any time you can clear a market like New York in any way, for 10 minutes, an hour or 15 is a good thing.”  WWRL general manager Adriane Gaines states, “I’m really looking forward to hearing Karel on the radio station.  General sales manager Mike Hill has been a great ‘Karel Show’ champion here, and his support for the show is paying off.”

dibblemovieFox Sports Radio’s Rob Dibble Makes TV Cameo.  Rob Dibble, former MLB pitching star and co-host of Fox Sports Radio’s “Fox Sports Tonight” (alongside Amy Van Dyken), is pictured here in a cameo role for ABC’s new primetime series “Back in the Game” that stars James Caan.  Dibble, who was a two-time National League All-Star and relief pitcher on the 1990 World Series champion Cincinnati Reds, played a prison inmate named “Senseless Paul” who was part of a group recruited to teach a little league team how to bat.

ricebrownBrown and Rice Visit NBC Sports Radio Network.  In New York City to promote their Golf Channel show “Big Break NFL Puerto Rico,” NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice (right) and College Football Hall of Famer and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown stopped by the NBC Sports Radio studios.  Rice talked golf and football with late morning host Brian Kenny and Brown joined early afternoon host Newy Scruggs.

Warren:  Jean and I both came to our MMTC work with decades of radio broadcast experience. We both worked for the Clear Channel corporate team prior to the leverage buy out. Jean comes to this work with legal and operational experience. I come to this work with operational, strategic and deal experiences. Together we have done over 200 deals for David Honig of MMTC. We work with buyers, sellers and companies who chose to DONATE stations to MMTC. We can find ideal minority, multicultural and women buyers for these properties. It’s a win for everyone.

Sandi: 
What did you do before becoming a media broker?

Miller:  I started in broadcasting in 1966, working my way through college: everything from cleaning the coffee pot, to DJ, news, and sales. I finished the BA and MA degrees while working for various radio and TV stations in the Fresno and Santa Maria markets in California. I managed several cable TV systems in California, and then did mergers and acquisitions work for a Denver-based cable TV company.  In 1989, my wife and I started consulting and brokering and our company name says it all: MCH: Miracles Can Happen. Twenty-four years and we are still in business. Along the way we also owned our own radio stations in California and Washington, which we think gives us a unique skill-set when working with owners, sellers, and buyers.

Sandi:  What did you do before becoming a media broker?

Gardiner:  My career in radio began in 1956 as a part time weekend announcer at an Alf Landon-owned station in Liberal, Kansas.  That led to a morning DJ slot at a new AM station in Alva, Oklahoma, where I attended my first two years of college.  I also had an opportunity to work with the consulting engineer on the construction of the four-tower antenna system, including the pattern calculations (using a slide rule!).  After a couple of years I migrated to Oklahoma City and a DJ spot at KOCY, then the only rock station in the market.  Starting with the overnight shift, I graduated to afternoon drive time on the station with about 85% of the audience out of 13 stations.

While at KOMA, I applied for a construction permit for a new AM in Liberal, Kansas, built and launched it, and sold it to a local businessman.  Then back to Oklahoma City and on to a sales slot at the Storz Broadcasting station, KOMA AM.

Sandi:  What did you do before becoming a media broker?

Kozacko:  I’m probably one of the few Media Brokers who does not have a broadcasting background.  My background is acquisition management and market research for companies. I was doing analysis of companies or products to be acquired by another business firm. But, I always had a strong interest in broadcasting even though not working in the field. My thesis for my MBA at Boston College was analysis of radio networks and I predicted the end for the ABC network (as the weakest). Well, I was wrong on that result but this was at the time just before ABC was actually split into four radio networks. So, I was right in a way and ABC management made some significant changes.

armstrongcarriganBoston TV Anchor Kim Carrigan Joins Barry Armstrong on WRKO Program.  “The Financial Exchange with Barry Armstrong” announces the addition of longtime Boston television anchor Kim Carrigan to the program.  Carrigan – who has worked at Boston TV outlets WHDH, WBZ/WSBK and WXFT – becomes co-host of the 10:00 am to 12:00 noon daily program on Entercom‘s news/talk WRKO effective today (9/3).  Armstrong says of Carrigan, “Kim is a tremendous addition to our program.  She brings intellect, a historical perspective, and a woman’s point of view to topics that require constant attention and interpretation.”  Carrigan, an Emmy award-winning television news anchor, has been recognized with numerous other awards, including: an Edward R. Murrow Award for “Best Newscast in a Major Market,” a Quest Award as one of five outstanding women who have achieved success in their quest for excellence from the New England Women Business Owners Association, and a Gabrielle Award.  She was also honored with the President’s Award from the Northeast Arc, the organization’s highest honor, for her work on behalf of individuals with disabilities.

wqxilogoLincoln Financial Media’s WQXI, Atlanta Names Alge Crumpler and JP Peterson AM Hosts.  Lincoln Financial Media announces the permanent replacement for the “Mayhem in the AM” morning show (Steak Shapiro, Chris Dimino, Nick Cellini) fired in late June after joking about ALS-stricken ex-NFLer crumpleralgeSteve Gleason.  Former Atlanta Falcons tight end Alge Crumpler and media pro JP Peterson will host “The Locker Room” beginning September 5.  “790 The Zone” program director Bob Richards says, “We are excited to launch ‘Locker petersonjpRoom.’   The years of insight and experience Alge and JP bring to the table, coupled with a revamped program format, will help set the tone each morning for how listeners digest the world of sports and set the pace for how topics resonate throughout the day.”  Crumpler has served as an analyst for “790 The Zone” and a co-host for Falcons game-day programs on WGCL-TV and WAGA-TV.  Peterson comes to “790 the Zone” from Tampa, where he spent the past 16 years in sports radio and TV.  Peterson anchored and did sideline work for WFLA-TV’s pre-season Bucs coverage and pre-game shows.  He has also done field reporting for NBC’s “Football Night in America” and hosted the Rays’ “Inside Pitch” and “Extra Innings” radio shows.

cumulus logoDickey: The Network Industry Is an Attractive Vehicle.  Cumulus Media chairman and CEO Lew Dickey tells investors during a conference call this morning that his company sees network radio as an “attractive vehicle” and that “scale is essential for Cumulus to continue to facilitate growth to make the proper investments,” in explaining the deal’s announced last Friday – the company’s acquisition of Dial Global and its shedding of a pack of small- and medium-market stations to Townsquare Media.  The deal alsodickeylew gives Cumulus five stations in Fresno – market #68 – fitting in with the company’s desire to focus on the top 100 markets.  Dickey reiterated last week’s statement about money saved in synergies, “We’re acquiring a leading provider of premium and exclusive content, and it creates an attractive platform for us now for both content creation and distribution and monetization of these various assets.  It’s about $40 million of estimated cost synergies and substantial incremental revenue growth opportunities, which are not being factored in here on the pro forma. It’s deleveraging on the identified cost synergies alone.”  As Dickey explained how the new properties will become part of the larger company, he noted that sports programming – especially the NFL and NCAA play-by-play contracts which have at least several more years on them – were key to the deal and it’s obvious he expects to pull in a lot of revenue from those two properties.  As for how many positions will be eliminated in the above-mentioned “synergies,” Dickey noted it’s not like the Citadel acquisition which was basically 54 “separate” operations.  “This is really one business unit that does essentially the same thing as the business unit that we currently own and operate.  So there are awful a lot of opportunities to — for efficiencies and to combine these efforts and do so in such a way that it’s accretive to growth the same time.”  Thanks to Seeking Alpha for the transcript.  Members can read the entire conference call here.

hayworthjdJ.D. Hayworth Exits AM Show at ‘Mighty 1090 AM’ in San Diego.  Former U.S. congressman and talk show host J.D. Hayworth exits the morning drive show at Broadcast Company of the Americas’ sports talk XEPRS, San Diego “Mighty 1090 AM” where he was co-hosting with Lee “Hacksaw” Hamilton.  Hamilton remains in mornings with a rotating cast of guests.  Hayworth joined the station earlier this year.  Prior to his foray into full-time sports talk radio, he’d been a news/talk host in Phoenix and had been doing fill-in work at local news/talk stations and on nationally syndicated programs.

weismanstevenDo You Have a Non-Compete Clause?  Depending on what company your work for, in what capacity you serve and in which state you work, a non-competition clause in your contract can greatly affect your ability to move from one employer to the next within a given period of time.  TALKERS legal editor Steven J.J. lindsleymikeMike Lindsley and Brian Cady Leave Townsquare Media’s Sports Talk WTMM, Albany.  Management at Townsquare Media’s sports talker WTMM, Albany “ESPN 104.5 The Team” is not saying there was a connection between the dismissal of afternoon hosts Mike Lindsley and Brian Cady and their being snookered by a caller pretending to be former New York Yankees outfielder Shane Spencer who said he had experimented with performance enhancing drugs, but the two are out and a new afternoon show is expected to be announced within the next two weeks, according to a report in the Albany Times Union.  Lindsley had an interview lined up with Spencer and was promoting it but it didn’t happen at the exact time it was supposed to.  Pretty soon the imposter called and Lindsley assumed it was the real Shane Spencer.  After it was determined what happened, all parties apologized.  Regardless, new brand manager Armen Williams debuted on the air on Friday, August 30 – a bit prior to his scheduled September 9 start.

costadinoDino Costa Moves to New SiriusXM Channel.  As reported in the New York Daily News, sports talk host Dino Costa leaves the Mad Dog Radio channel on SiriusXM and will be part of a new sports talk channel on the satellite radio service, reportedly called “SiriusXM Radio Sports Zone 92.”  Costa had been the evening host on the Chris Russo-curated Mad Dog Radio channel.  The Daily News reports the relationship between Russo and Costa may not be as friendly as it once was, possibly leading to the split, although Costa Tweeted his thanks to Russo and his crew for the opportunity to work together.

fisherhouselogoDave Ross to Host New Production of Fisher House Foundation’s “The Gift.”  Fisher House Foundation announces it has begun production on the 2013 edition of its award-winning holiday radio program, “The Gift,” which tells the inspiring stories of wounded warriors and veterans who, with the help of their loved ones, have overcome tremendous obstacles to reclaim their lives.  The program, which is available to radio stations to air at both Thanksgiving and Christmas, consists of three self-contained hours of content.  Among those profiled inrossdave “The Gift” are Sergeant Cory Remsburg, an Army Ranger whose successful battle to recover from a serious head wound has made him an inspiration to President Obama; Father Tim Vakoc, a chaplain who was fatally wounded while tending his flock on the front lines of Iraq; and Para-Olympian Brad Snyder, a Navy Lieutenant who was blinded by an IED and used swimming to rebuild his physical and mental strength.  KIRO, Seattle personality Dave Ross hosts this year’s edition of the program.  Stations that air the program will help raise awareness and funds for the non-profit Fisher House, which provides no-cost housing and other support to the families of wounded warriors and veterans while their loved ones recover at military and VA hospitals. stuchellcharlieCondolences.  TALKERS sends condolences to the family and friends of a number of broadcasters who’ve recently passed away: Capital Cities executive Joe Somerset who died in Boston due to complications suffered after a fall at his home several days prior.  Somerset was a mentor to many in the radio business, especially during the “Golden Age” of top 40 radio.  One of his “students” was longtime Cap Cities executive and station owner Curt Hahn who writes about his mentor in a piece you can read here…..Longtime newsman Charlie Stuchell who passed away at age 64 after a battle with cancer.  He was a news and traffic reporter on Bristol Broadcasting’s WXBQ, Bristol, Virginia…..KSCO, Santa Cruz reporter and anchor Don Husing who died on August 29 at age 71.  Station owner Michael Zwerling tells the Santa Cruz Sentinel that Husing had worked for KSCO for 47 years, surviving three ownership changes.  KSCO personality Rosemary Chalmers tells the paper Husing, who had no surviving family, was diabetic and had complained of flu-like symptoms prior to his death.

millerkennelbobKevin in the Kennel.  If you look closely, you can see that KIDO, Boise morning drive host Kevin Miller (l) is broadcasting from a makeshift kennel to raise awareness and funds to support the Canyon County Animal Shelter.  With him is animal lover Bob Holman (r).  Miller invited his listeners to spend some time with him inside the kennel and, as a result, raised more than $11,000 in one day as the shelter takes part in the “Rachael Ray $100,000 Challenge.”

Holt:  Like so many broadcasters, I started out in radio as an announcer and disc jockey, with engineering thrown into the mix.  I worked Texas medium markets including Amarillo, Lubbock, and Austin, and then I made it to the big time in Big D.  By the time I got to Dallas I had wised up a bit and was much more interested in advertising sales than in being the next Ed McMahon, so I happily left the microphone behind to hit the street with a rate card.  It turned out that I was a pretty good salesman, so next came manager gigs in some in pretty good markets…Buffalo, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco…and then some time in New York as the VP of a national radio rep company. I also got plenty of hands-on experience by personally owning and operating a successful 20 station group in good medium markets for three decades.

Reed:  I worked on the “station side” of the business.  Specifically, I had just spent a decade (1977 – 1987) at WPLO/WVEE in Atlanta (Plough Broadcasting and then DKM Broadcasting), most of that as general sales manager.  While in Atlanta, I also bought WJTT in Chattanooga with Jim Brewer (1986).  And from 1982 to 1984, I got my MBA at Georgia State University in their Executive MBA program.  Before Atlanta, I worked for Bill Stakelin for a couple of years in Orlando.  And in my “childhood,” worked for Bud Walters and Jim Brewer.

gallup logoLatest Gallup News Poll Puts Radio at Back of the Pack.  The just-released Gallup poll of Americans’ news consumption habits provides good news for television but not such good news for radio and print.  According to the study, among persons 30 to 49 years old, 50% named television as their preferred news medium, 28% said the internet was their first choice; 7% said radio and 6% said print.  Among the 18 to 29 demographic, radio fell behind print at just 3%.  While this study will be interpreted by some as another nail in the coffin for radio news, the reality is it’s not as cut-and-dried as that.  First, even radio practitioners would be hard pressed to expect radio to be considered a primary news source across a broad spectrum of the population in this day and age.  It’s hardly surprising that television and the internet are first and second, respectively.  It’s the very reason that forward-thinking radio news operations are moving into the digital world.  Most radio news people would admit that they are focused on serving people during their commute – something that television cannot do although is something that the internet is becoming better at doing as it gains access to moving vehicles.  Other factors to be considered are more nebulous.  In major markets with heritage radio news operations radio probably enjoys a better place in the minds of news consumers.  Survey the top 10 media markets only and radio may fare a bit better on a percentage basis.  Also, as part of a morning radio show (in just about any format), the news segment may not even be thought of by the listener as a “news program” yet it remains an indispensable part of most radio morning shows.

touchvision logoAnd Speaking of News.  Longtime radio programmer and media creative officer Lee Abrams is preparing to debut his new video news service called TouchVision.  Abrams, along with co-founders Steve Saslow and Brandon Davis are calling the new service “the revolutionary way to reach America’s new mainstream on all devices with a complete re-imagination of news and information.”  The live, 24/7 channel will differ from most news platforms in that it will feature no anchors.  Content airs simultaneously online, on TV, on phones and tablets.  TouchVision says, “The story is the star.”  TouchVision also states the programming is “a partnership with broadcasters on a DMA-exclusive basis using their digital assets.”  The programming clock indicates time for local news, weather and sports in addition to the unique programming elements and world and national news coverage.  You can check out TouchVision’s site here.

cookehollandAudience Research: The Dunkin’ Donuts Method.  Radio consultant Holland Cooke reports from his summer tour of client stations across America.  He writes that programmers can learn a lot from eavesdropping on conversations at donut shops and lunch counters.  He predicts, “You’ll note a disconnect between what you hear, and lots of what talk radio is trying to force-feed ‘em.  Example: While cable and radio pundits are shocked…SHOCKED…by revelations about beyond-Patriot Act NSA surveillance, coffee gulpers shrug that they’ve suspected it all along.  I’ve overheard parents say they’re using the story as an opportunity to wag a finger in their kids’ faces about what they disclose online.”  Read Holland Cooke’s entire piece here.

proctorjerryMEDIA BROKER SPOTLIGHT:  Jerry Proctor of The Proctor Group, Inc.  In this week’s installment of Media Broker Spotlight, Sandi Bergman of RadioTVDeals.com interviews media broker Jerry Proctor of The Proctor Group, Inc.  Proctor brings years of experience to the broker business and describes the deal scene as follows: “Television is undergoing a consolidation revolution such as occurred in the radio business a few years ago.  Consequently, television station prices are returning to pre-recession levels and the consolidations continue with prices still climbing.  Radio is still suffering some of the lingering effects of the recession.  Station prices are recovering but that part of the broadcast industry is being held back due to the lack of available financing.  That’s one of the reasons you see so many LMA opportunities….many with purchase options attached.  The larger and dominant companies in radio are primarily trading among themselves with some small amount of consolidations continuing.  That leaves the lower tier of stations more available to smaller operators.  Many owners in this tier of stations are now retiring and want to sell.  I view NOW as being an excellent time to acquire those stations….if the buyer can find the financing to buy.  Unfortunately, a buyer today MUST have more than two nickels to rub together if they’re going to boot-strap a station purchase!”  To read the entire installment of Media Broker Spotlight, please click here.

rameyhalKCBS, San Francisco’s Hal Ramey Returns to Work After Lengthy Vocal Problem.  Sports anchor Hal Ramey returned to work at KCBS, San Francisco on July 1 after almost four months off the air due to a nodule on his vocal cords.  The Walnut Creek Patch reports that back in February, Ramey noticed his voice was getting a little hoarse.  Doctors advised him to give it a little rest but it just got worse.  He was told to rest it completely – no talking at all – but after a while it only shrank 60% and doctors decided to operate.  The non-cancerous growth was removed on May 9 and Ramey was able to return to work seven weeks later.

durginbobOdds & Sods.  WHP, Harrisburg afternoon drive host Bob Durgin will retire from his position there on August 2 after a 24-year career at the station.  Clear Channel is beginning a search to replace Durgin…..CBS Radio’s KNX, Los Angeles announces the next in its “On Your Corner” series in which the all-news outlet will spotlight San Pedro and the Palos Verdes Peninsula on Friday, July 19 with a day of live broadcasts from 5:00 am to 7:00 pm.  The station says it will focus on key issues and happenings in San Pedro and the Port of Los Angeles, along with the peninsula communities of Palos Verdes, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills and Rolling Hills Estates.  Civic leaders and other guests will be featured during the special broadcast to give Southern Californians insight into the unique attributes, history and future development in the area.

radioshow2013‘Radio and the Connected Car’ Super Session Scheduled for 2013 Radio Show.  The National Association of Broadcasters and the Radio Advertising Bureau announce the 2013 Radio Show in Orlando will feature a Super Session titled, “Radio and the Connected Car” taking place on Thursday, September 19 at 9:15 am.  The NAB and RAB say the panel will feature “leading strategists, analysts and researchers discussing developments in the connected car, what consumers want and where the technology is headed.  This session will reveal data from surveys, focus groups and consumer clinics along with sneak peeks at what car makers and their suppliers have in store for the dashboard of the future.  Participants will offer specific recommendations on what radio can do now to maintain its prominence in the automobile for years to come.”  Participants will include: Roger C. Lanctot, associate director, Global Automotive Practice at Strategy Analytics; and Fred Jacobs, president of Jacobs Media.  Bill Rose, senior vice president, marketing at Arbitron, will provide introductory remarks.

Sherwood:  I am a broadcaster.  I started out as an announcer in 1947 and went from WWXL Peoria Illinois to WMCA New York.  I was there to help usher in the beginning of Rock and Roll.  Following that (immediately before brokering) I became a General Manager of radio stations, and stockholder in some, including Brattleboro, VT (WTSA) Portland, Me (WLOB) and Albany, NY (WTRY).  Other stations that I managed and/or held stock included WNHC, New Haven, CT; WMEE /WMEF Ft. Wayne, IN (plus others in the group);  WIBG, Philadelphia; and WMAQ/WKQX, Chicago, for NBC.

carmichaeldaveCBS Radio Makes Changes to Programming at Sports Talk KHTK, Sacramento.  The big change here is the move of Don Geronimo from AM drive to middays – airing from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm and the return of Carmichael Davegeronimodon to the station.  Carmichael Dave – who exited the station in May of last year and was recently hosting an internet program – is being paired up with Keith Brooks for the new morning show that will debut on July 8.  It appears the station will re-brand itself as “KHTK Sports 1140” from its current “CBS Sports Radio Sacramento.”  The station also notes that “Jason Ross will rejoin the afternoon sports desk in the ‘KHTK Sports 1140’ update studios and continue to fill in for Grant NapearDave ‘Deuce’ Mason will continue to be an important part of Sports 1140 and local sports programming for KHTK.”  Don Geronimo has been a successful personality on KHTK in the midday slot going back to the days of the old Westwood One-syndicated Don & Mike show.

boylespeterLegal Snag Hits Salem’s Attempt to Bring Peter Boyles to KNUS, Denver.  Longtime KHOW, Denver radio personality Peter Boyles – recently fired by Clear Channel after a physical altercation between Boyles and his producer Greg Hollenback – was supposed to resurface on Salem Communications’ crosstown news/talk KNUS on July 1.  But it appears a legal complication – probably a non-compete in his contract with Clear Channel – is preventing that from happening for the time being.  Local reports said Boyles may be hosting the morning show as early as Wednesday (7/3) but as of today the morning drive show is being hosted by regular KNUS fill-in host Jimmy Sengenberger.

cochransteveSteve Cochran Fills in for Jonathon Brandmeier on WGN, Chicago.  As Chicago media writer Robert Feder reports, longtime WGN personality and former crosstown WIND host Steve Cochran (who exited WIND just last week) is sitting in for the vacationing Jonathon Brandmeier today (7/2) on the morning show – possibly adding fuel to the speculation that Cochran will return to WGN.  But WGN president and general manager Jimmy de Castro is either being coy or truly is still considering the future of the station’s lineup when he tells Feder, “We haven’t even talked about an agreement because he’s just doing fill-ins.  I know Cochran really well.  I love him.  I’d love to figure out if there’s a way to have him in WGN’s family.  I don’t know.  I’m doing research and looking at a lot of stuff.  I want him to fill in on different dayparts — mornings, middays, afternoons — and hear what happens.”  The two worked together at WLUP-FM and WLUP-AM (now sports WMVP) in the 1990s.

wgnlogoWGN, Chicago Officially Comments on Staff Changes.  TALKERS reported the exit of WGN, Chicago late night talk host Turi Ryder last week as she addressed her departure from the station on her radio program – by the way a classy move for management to allow her to say “good-bye.”  Now, WGN announces the evening sports show content and news staff changes confirming “the David Kaplan show will air from 7:00 pm to 12:00 midnight with a focus on the Chicago sports scenekaplandavid and national sports landscape.  Listeners will hear a variety of sports topics discussed by Kaplan and various guests from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm, followed by an hour of sports talk from Mark Carman and Jordan Bernfield.  Kaplan is a staple in the Chicago sports industry, having joined WGN Radio in 1995.  He most recently held the position of afternoon drive sports reporter and host of various shows including, ‘WGN Sports Night’ and ‘Cubs Insider.’ Bernfield is the current host of ‘Cubs Weekly’ and Northwestern basketball and football broadcasts.  Carman comes to WGN radio from Yahoo! Sports Radio, where he was previously the afternoon co-host since August of 2012.”  The new schedule also includes a lineup shift for news anchors Andrea Darlas and Steve Bertrand.  Darlas will anchor mornings and Bertrand returns to the afternoons/evenings.  WGN president and general manager Jimmy deCastro states, “We’re making changes in an effort to give Chicagoans more of the things they want to hear.  Thank you to our WGN Radio listeners, the most loyal and attentive family, for helping us navigate through this and stay tuned for the best of the old and new coming soon.”

kilmeadebrianBrian Kilmeade’s Fox News Radio Show to be Featured on his Fox News Channel TV Show.  In what promises to be a creative and interesting piece of cross-platform promotion tomorrow morning between 6:00 am and 9:00 am (7/3), multimedia talk star Brian Kilmeade‘s midday Fox News Radio show “Kilmeade and Friends”  will be featured in “realty show” style on Fox News Channel‘s “morning show “Fox and Friends” (in which Kilmeade is a co-host).  The behind the scenes package will show Brian’s transition as he goes from TV to radio — the cameras followed him and stayed in the radio studio for the three hours where some of Brian’s regular “friends” stopped by and had a little fun with him.

nymrad logoNYMRAD Touts Positive New York Market Revenue Data.  Based on numbers from Miller, Kaplan, Arase and Co., the trade group New York Market Radio is announcing spot revenue is up 7.6% for the first five months of 2013.  NYMRAD executive director Deborah Beagan says, “It’s quite a story to see New York Radio Market revenues up by over 7% year-to-date through May, 2013…The key to New York Market Radio’s success is live-and-local content that engages the audience.  For the 92% of New Yorkers who listen to radio, this is their hometown and their favorite stations.  In addition, New York Market Radio stations have significantly invested in the digital arena to provide multi-platform options to advertisers.  The future of effective advertising lies in the smart integration of traditional and digital media.  I am extremely enthusiastic about the second half of 2013.”

carlsonsusanWLS-AM, Chicago Brings Susan Carlson Aboard for PM News Duties.  Chicago media writer Robert Feder reports that Cumulus Media’s news/talk WLS, Chicago is hiring former WBBM-TV “CBS 2” morning news anchor Susan Carlson to serve as news anchor for the afternoon drive show hosted by Roe Conn and Richard Roeper.  She replaces Jim Johnson who recently retired from the station after 45 years.  Carlson is no stranger to WLS having served as a news and traffic reporter from 1998 to 2002, also working with Roe Conn.  Feder reports Carlson is under contract to WBBM-TV until July 18 and will join WLS-AM after that.

The Brick and the network’s complete weekend lineup.  It will continue to air TRN-FM’s “Mancow in the Morning” on the station from 7:00 am to 10:00 am.  General manager Deirdre Palmer states, “We are very excited to add Fox Sports Radio programming to 670AM.  We’re confident the Fox Sports brand, combined with the Network’s quality programming, will elevate KMZQ-AM to the next level in Las Vegas.”

Sports Radio has a new vice president of affiliate relations as Katherine Galanty joins the company.  Galanty’s resume includes stints with Sports USA, ISP Sports, and Westwood One.  Yahoo! Sports Radio program director and chief operating officer Craig Larson states, “Katherine brings a wealth of affiliate relations experience in sports talk radio.  We expect her to play a critical role as we continue to emerge in the years ahead.”

theblaze logoGlenn Beck’s TheBlaze to Be Available in Tri-State Area Via Cablevision’s Optimum TV.  Beginning later this month, Glenn Beck-founded TheBlaze network will be available to New York City and the surrounding area as it will be included in Cablevision’s Optimum Preferred, Silver and Gold Packages.  The channel is available to Optimum TV commercial customers with Optimum Business or Optimum Entertainment.  Cablevision VP of video product management, Bradley Feldman, states, “Optimum TV is the only cable provider in the Tri-State area to bring our customers original programming from Glenn Beck’s TheBlaze, and the independent network will add more diversity to our strong lineup, providing our customers with more choices that our customers appreciate.”  In a statement from Beck’s organization it says TheBlaze “offers a full slate of original news and opinion shows like ‘Real News,’ ‘Wilkow!’ and ‘For the Record,’ late night comedy like ‘The Wonderful World of Stu’ and ‘B.S. of A.,’ family-friendly programming like ‘Liberty Treehouse’ as well as thought-provoking documentaries and original specials. TheBlaze first launched on September 12, 2011 as GBTV and quickly grew into one of the world’s largest online streaming networks with over 300,000 subscribers.  One year later, TheBlaze became a television network.”

cbsradioCBS Q1 2013 Report: Company Up 6%, Radio’s Top 10 Markets Up 2%.  The bulk of the discussion during yesterday’s conference call centered around TV for CBS, as it usually does.  But CEO Les Moonves stated moonveslesup front that the company continues to build “on the terrific debut of the CBS Sports Radio Network.  We’ve added 20 affiliates to our roster since our last call.  In addition, CBS Radio played a major role in this year’s success of the Academy of Country Music Awards.  This is a show that perfectly complements our radio audiences, as evidenced by all the artists who mentioned the power of radio in their acceptance speeches.”  CFO Joseph Ianniello noted that, comparable to the same period a year ago, the top 10 radio markets were performing up about 2%.  Thanks to Seeking Alpha for the conference call transcript.  Read more here.

thomasbillFormer Citadel/Cumulus Birmingham Cluster Manager Bill Thomas Sues Company for Unlawful Termination.  Add discrimination to that under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.  Bill Thomas, a.k.a Michael Thomas Stainback, alleges in the complaint filed in United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama that the company knew he had heart ailments that resulted from a 2009 heart attack yet he still performed his job well and even received bonuses based upon performance.  Thomas alleges that in February of 2012, after telling Cumulus corporate management that he’d been diagnosed with congestive heart failure, he was terminated by the company six days later.  He’s seeking unspecified damages as well as back pay.

freedomfeens‘Freedom Feens’ Show to Join GCN.  The “Freedom Feens” weekend talk show co-hosted by Michael W. Dean and Neema Vedadi will debut on the Genesis Communications Network on Saturday, May 11.  Dean and Vedadi describe their program as a “great-sounding, feisty weekend show about free markets, the police state, the war on drugs, the right to keep and bear arms, computer security, honest money, self-defense, self-employment, marriage, do-it-yourself media production, marketing, music and more.”  Regarding the title of their program, the duo explain, “‘Feen’ means ‘fiend,’ and the ‘Freedom Feens’ support the rights of the smallest minority, the individual.”

carrhowieOdds & Sods.  WRKO, Boston afternoon drive talk show host Howie Carr broadcasts live from La Verdad Mexican restaurant near Fenway Park this afternoon from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm as he promotes his latest book , Rifleman (Frandel, LLC 2013), a true-crime story about infamous Boston mobster Steven Flemmi.  Carr will stay after his program ends to sign copies of the new book…..Hubbard Broadcasting’s WTOP, Washington is conducting its second annual “Communter Idle” contest through Friday, May 3.  The contest asks DC commuters to share their daily travel horror story to win prizes and possibly be the grand-prize winner who’ll receive $1,000 in gas money and a limo ride to work courtesy of Reston Limousine.  Runners-up will receive $150 gas cards…..It may be a sign of the times that one of the most popular shows on CNN is the new “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” travel and food program that airs on Sunday evenings on the cable news/talk channel.  But new CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker is so thrilled with the its performance that he’s already ordered another season of the show that will debut on September 15.

cinchcaastCinchcast, Inc. Establishes Strategic Advisory Board.  One of radio’s technological innovators and dynamic entrepreneurs of the new digital age, Alan Levy – founder and CEO of BlogTalkRadio and its “white-label” sister firm Cinchcast, Inc. – has announced the appointment of two well-known executives to Cinchcast’s new strategic advisory board: Tom Glocer, former CEO of Thomson Reuters and Steve Bornstein, former head of the NFL‘s digital media operations and ABC Sports/ABC, Inc. president and ESPN chairman.  Levy tells TALKERS, “It’s an honor to be working with Tom and Steve as we continue to build, develop and scale the Cinchcast and BlogTalkRadio businesses.”

The Week of Sandy for Broadcasters in the Northeast; Broadcasters Associations Tout Virtues of Local Radio and TV.  Natural disasters bring the importance of radio to the fore and Hurricane Sandy was no different.  Even as we write this, broadcasters in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut are – days after the storm – struggling with ongoing issues of lack of electricity, fuel shortages, staff with homes damages and destroyed, and more.  In fact, contacting broadcasters in the affected areas to report how they are getting by is a challenge since all of their resources – such as they are – are being used to perform the function of emergency broadcasting.  However the degree to which the storm affected the hub of media in this country – New York City — threw another wrench into the works.  Even though radio stations were able to get information out one way or another – for example, all-news WINS using sister station WXRK’s signal when its transmitter went down – broadcasting companies were hampered by the lack of electricity and the business end of operating a station or network remained, and in some cases remains, challenging.  New Jersey Association of Broadcasters president and CEO Paul Rotella is using the disaster to raise the FM chips in cell phones issue.  “This deadly disaster points out the absolute necessity of having FM chips in cell phones activated, which would turn every cell phone into an emergency ‘transistor’ radio. (Many cell phones already have FM chips either installed or easily implanted and activated.) I understand that cell phone carriers want to make money off of consumers with streaming rate plans, etc., but maybe they could light the FM chip up in times of emergency so that more people can receive emergency information that only our local broadcasters are capable of transmitting to everyone. It’s worth exploring.”  New York State Broadcasters Association president David L. CBS Radio Names Ryan Maguire KDKA-FM, Pittsburgh PD.  Rising sports programming star Ryan Maguire has been tabbed by CBS Radio to handle the PD position at Pittsburgh sports talk outlet KDKA-FM “SportsRadio 93.7 The Fan.”  Maguire fills the shoes left by Terry Foxx who moved to Atlanta to program CBS Radio’s new FM sports talk outlet WZGC “92.9 The Game.”  Maguire currently serves as PD for Entercom’s KCSP, Kansas City “610 Sports Radio.”  Prior to that he programmed Entercom’s WSSP, Milwaukee “Sports Radio 1250” and Cumulus Media’s WTKA, Ann Arbor “The Ticket 1050.”  CBS Radio SVP and market manager Michael Young states, “Ryan has a very impressive track record in programming sports radio stations.  He has produced strong ratings and successfully developed a number of dynamic on-air sports personalities.  Furthermore, Ryan has an uncompromising passion for sports and his leadership will well serve Pittsburgh sports fans.”  On his new gig, Maguire says, “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity and privilege to be a part of ‘Sportsradio 93.7 The Fan’ in Pittsburgh.  Western Pennsylvania is home to some of the most loyal and passionate fans in the country and I’m looking forward to seeing KDKA-FM continue to be a big part of their sports experience.”

Media Broker Says Opportunity is Knocking Right Now for First-Time Station Buyers.  Sandi Bergman, whom TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison describes as “a dynamic rising star among today’s crop of media brokers,” has positive news for the many recently laid-off radio management figures looking to apply their seasoned skills in a new and productive direction in the industry.  They should consider radio station ownership!  Although it is a tough sales-driven business and there are daunting obstacles to obtaining financing, ownership is not just for the mega-corporations who are burdened with seemingly insurmountable debt. It is indeed possible that many of them will be spinning off unwieldy properties in the months and years ahead creating new opportunities for fresh blood in the business.  According to Bergman, who owns the innovative website www.RadioTVDeals.com and a New Mexico-based brokerage firm (MyMediaBroker.com) and is one of the relatively few major female brokers in the game, there are many incredible opportunities for first-time buyers.  Read the entire TALKERS interview with Sandi Bergman here.

It’s Official:  WFAN, New York Broadcasts on 101.9 FM.  CBS Radio took over WRXP 101.9 FM under an LMA at midnight last night and the nation’s first full-time sports talk station WFAN, New York is now heard in the region on FM.  CBS Radio is buying the class B FM signal from Merlin Media for $75 million.

Keven Cohen Out at WVOC, Columbia, South Carolina.  Clear Channel Media and Entertainment ousts PM drive host Keven Cohen from news/talk WVOC, Columbia, South Carolina.  Cohen announced his departure from the station via his Facebook page stating, “An hour ago, Clear Channel relieved me of my duties and fired me.  Obviously, I am devastated.  I am not getting the chance to do so on the radio, so I want to thank all of you for the love and support you have offered my way over almost 19 years at WVOC.  Please keep the Cohen family in your prayers.  This will be a significant challenge.”  WVOC has not announced its plans for PM drive at the station.

Now That You’re in Sales…  Because all radio staffers are in sales now – or should be, according to radio consultant Holland Cooke – if they want to keep their jobs.  But as Cooke writes, just because you’re a talent doing personalized spots doesn’t mean you have job security these days.  So, what’s a talent to do?  Still more, says Cooke.  “Offer to write copy.  You got your on-air job because you’re good with words, right?  That could make you handy to have around if yours is one of many stations where the creative department fell victim to a recent bloodbath.  Too often, account reps are writing spot copy, and too much of it sounds like…well, spot copy.”  Also, have you accompanied a sales rep on a call?  No?  Uh-oh…better read more of Holland Cooke’s wise advise for air talent here.

Steve Kelley to Prove Colorado is a Swing State.  Steve Kelley, along with Bill Rogan and Murphy Wells, hosts the morning drive show on Salem Communications’ KNUS, Denver.  Kelley is a well-known Denver radio personality who has performed various stunts for charity in the past.  Now, Kelly has begun an effort to break the world record for time spent swinging – a tongue-in-cheek nod to Colorado’s political status as a “swing state” and with the desire to highlight the need for all registered voters to cast their ballots.  Kelley will report on his progress live on the air and plans to finish his attempt sometime Saturday evening.  In past stunts, Kelley has rode a pogo stick from Boulder to Denver and sat in every seat in both the old and new Mile High Stadiums.

A Conversation with Sandi Bergman

Sandi Bergman, whom Michael Harrison describes as being “a dynamic rising star among today’s crop of media brokers,” is president/CEO of RadioTVDeals.com – an innovative website dedicated to bringing media outlet buyers and sellers together – and MyMediaBroker.com, a leading edge New Mexico-based national media brokerage firm.  An experienced radio station owner/operator in her own right, Bergman served as president/CEO of  Bergman Broadcasting Company, Inc, licensee of KSEL-AM and KSEL-FM, Portales, NM and RICKochet Communications, Inc., licensee of KSMX FM, Clovis, NM, from 1994-2002.  In 1997, Bergman was recognized by the Small Business Administration as a finalist for “Small Business Person of the Year.” She is actively involved in the National Association of Media Brokers (NAMB).  The following Talkers Interview was conducted by Michael Harrison.

TALKERS:  Please give us a brief overview of your days in radio station ownership and your transition to becoming a media broker.

SANDI BERGMAN:  “You can sell a sports package for $200 with 40 spots ROS or a $300 package with 60, and give them two spots in all the games.”  That was the sum total of education I received on the topic of “how to sell radio advertising” when I was handed the keys to KSEL AM & FM in Portales, NM.  Fortunately, I am a quick learner!

Barring a small panic attack the night before we closed (I realized I didn’t even know how to operate the Marti unit), I was able to make it to the closing table, all for the love of radio.

However, getting into the business to begin with was “tricky”, to say the least.

There was no “sugar daddy” involved to help us get started.  With seller financing, my dad did agree to allow us to mortgage his home in order to come up with the down payment.  No capital was available to pay the first month’s expenses so I approached many of the existing advertisers to ask them to pre-pay the first month.  Surprisingly, no one turned me down.  That meant we had to practically double up on sales the following month to stay ahead in the game.  Not an easy feat.  We did it, and we lived to tell the story!  Within a year we were able to secure an SBA loan to purchase a dark 100kW stick and put it on the air (KSMX-FM).  It turned into a winner for us.
