wiglesworthcarlTalk Radio Pioneer Carl Wiglesworth Dies.  Texas local talk radio pioneer Carl Wiglesworth died on Tuesday at age 73.  He suffered a massive heart attack on Friday and never regained consciousness.  Wiglesworth was a high-profile talk radio personality during the 1980s and 1990s – the period during which the format rose to prominence in the popular culture.  He spent most of his career at WOAI, San Antonio, famously quitting that station on the air in 1999 after delivering a rant against the state of the talk radio business.  He also worked at KTSA and KAHL in the San Antonio market.  On the WOAI website, former co-worker Eliza Sonneland says of Wiglesworth’s program, “To talk to people who had differing opinions from the status quo, that was the bread and butter of Carl’s program.”  TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison states, “Carl Wiglesworth was in a league of his own in terms of his courage, independence, preparedness, localness and authenticity.  Although described as a conservative, it should be pointed out that the conservative movement that marked the phenomenal growth of talk radio in the wild ’90s – typified by Wiglesworth – was far more of a blend of issues-driven libertarian populism than the partisan ideological approach to talk radio that came later.  Carl’s self-imposed departure from corporate radio more than a decade ago was a severe loss for our industry.  His death this week is an even greater loss for humanity.”
