LOS ANGELES — The first two installments of this comprehensive four-part special feature series of April 2020 ratings overviews dealt with news (Wednesday, 5/20) and sports talk (yesterday, 5/21).

Our attention now turns to a music intensive format, as this summary is comprised of PPM-market classic hits-oldies facilities that rank in the top 20 (April 2020, 6+).

Breakouts shown here consist of data from public radio news/talk facilities that rank in the top 20 (6+) in any PPM-market during that February 28 through March 27-conducted sweep.

In addition to that particular ratings caveat, Nielsen Audio only releases audience estimates for stations subscribing to its services.

As a result, ratings stats in this analysis are limited to facilities paying that company for its information.

PPM Analysis: January 2019’s Pacesetters

LOS ANGELES —  It has become a clear-cut “given” that adult contemporary facilities that play continuous Christmas music from mid-November through late-December will (with rare exceptions) enjoy substantial success in Nielsen Audio’s “Holiday” ratings periods.

Several weeks ago, we confirmed that annual ratings tradition by detailing the magnitude of AC’s strength and which formats were most adversely impacted by the juggernaut that is this proven all-Christmas music strategy.

To be clear, adult contemporary doesn’t have an exclusive patent on all-Christmas music, but even several decades into this basic yet highly-rewarding phenomenon, AC remains the single most strident partisan.

When Christmas tunes were returned to storage, stations reverted to their regular format.

Now it’s time to examine how things shook out in the January 2019 ratings sweep (January 3 – 30) and see which formats/specific stations are in the lead (#1 and #2) positions in their respective PPM-markets.

TALKERS

LOS ANGELES —  We’ve witnessed it yet again:  The “Holiday” survey period hardly resembles the other 12 sweeps in a calendar year.

Nielsen Audio’s “Holiday” 2018 survey period covered December 6 (2018) – January 2 (2019) and – repeating a familiar theme – stations that played wall-to-wall Christmas music (up until December 25) reaped the benefits.

As usual, the overwhelming majority of those outlets are adult contemporary.

All the facts and figures are contained in this special report, including which formats were most adversely impacted in “Holiday” 2018.

TALKERS

LOS ANGELES — The third of four installments of our comprehensive look at “Holiday” 2018 overviews is for adult contemporary – the format that leads the way in the all-Christmas music programming strategy.

While stations from other formats engage in wall-to-wall Christmas music, adult contemporary was the originator and, by an overwhelming majority, it remains the most common proponent.

Full disclosure: Not every adult contemporary station listed here played all-Christmas music during the “Holiday” 2018 sweep and some ACs (14% of our sample) even register a December 2018 – “Holiday” 2018 decline.

Regardless if they programmed all-Christmas music roughly between Thanksgiving week and Christmas Day, all adult contemporary facilities that rank in the top 20 in a PPM-market (6+, “Holiday” 2018) comprise the following scoreboards in the industry’s most extensive overview of a “Holiday” ratings sweep.

Nielsen Audio only releases audience estimates for stations that subscribe to its services. Owing to that reason, ratings information in this “Holiday” 2018 report are limited to stations that pay Nielsen Audio for its data.

TALKERS

Los Angeles – The fourth and final installment of our special feature summary of September 2018 ratings overviews deals with (commercial, English-language) news/talk outlets.

All-news was addressed last Thursday (10/11); sports talk last Friday (10/12); and hot AC yesterday (10/15).

In order to be included in this analysis, a PPM-market (commercial, English-language) news/talk facility had to chalk up at least a .5 (6+) in the September 2018 ratings period, which covered August 16  – September 12.

Added this month to the news/talk overview is a chart detailing the format’s strongest-to-softest PPM-markets by 6+ AQH share.

Nielsen Audio releases audience estimates for facilities that subscribe to its services. Owing to that reason, ratings stats in this exclusive overview are limited to stations that pay Nielsen Audio for its data.
