kohanskiwriterNORWICH, CT — What a narcissist!  How many times have we heard this of late?  With the fury of the elections upon us and certainly with the richness of material to draw upon, the subject of narcissistic personality is as much a part of daily conversation in the talk radio business as is corporate debt.  That being said, the autistic spectrum disorders we are all blessed and cursed with are varying degrees of narcissism.

Or are we?

Let me take you into the world of pathological narcissism, “healthy narcissism” and contrast it to high self-esteem.  You may consider where you are in this range and where is the figure upon whom you are commenting?  In a society that has become consumed with the need for exhibitionistic/voyeuristic self-expression and self-validation it may be hard to remember a spectrum exists.  For you, maybe a spectrum doesn’t exist.  Life is simply black and white and what I am saying makes no sense at all.

hurleyharryWPGG, Atlantic City’s Harry Hurley Gets National Attention for Governor Christie Interview.  The fiscal crisis being faced by Atlantic City, New Jersey – the city will run out of money on April 8 – is a regional issue but Governor Chris Christie has national visibility, so the media pays attention when he speaks.  Christie did a 40-minute interview with WPGG morning host Harry HurleychristieWPGG on March 24 that was reported on by the Wall Street Journal, the Associated Press, The Washington Times, the Philadelphia Enquirer, and a New Zealand-based organization called Foreign Affairs, in addition to the New Jersey media.  Christie has proposed a state takeover of the city that has support in the New Jersey legislature but New Jersey Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto opposes the plan.  Hurley tells TALKERS magazine Christie appeared on his show without interruption from 7:35 to 8:15 and was followed by a 40-minute interview with Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian, who responded to the governor.  Hurley says he’s amazed at how the interview went viral.  Harry Hurley was recently named the 2016 recipient of the prestigious Sharon L. Harrison Memorial Award for Outstanding Community Service by a Radio Talk Show Host (“Humanitarian of the Year”).  It will be presented to him during the Awards Ceremony at the forthcoming TALKERS 2016: Bridging the Generations conference set for Friday, May 20 on the campus of Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY.  Hurley is one of more than 60 speakers set for what promises to be a memorable and productive day.  The conference will be an early sellout.  For information, please click here.

nielsen logoNielsen Investigates Millennials.  The Holy Grail of advertising in 2016 is to reach the Millennial generation – defined roughly as those ages 18-35 (as of 2015).  But as the Nielsen Insights report highlights, not all Millennials (nor Boomers nor Gen-Xers for that matter) are at the same points in their lives – and that matters when trying to understand their media behavior.  In looking at technology penetration and media usage, Nielsen breaks the Millennial generation into three types: Dependent Adults (living in someone else’s home), On Their Own (living in their own home without children) and Starting a Family (living in their own home with children).  Obviously the three types have different lifestyles and, consequently, different media habits.  Much of the report explains differences in digital device penetration and usage, but about radio it has this to say: “The report found that radio reaches 90% of Millennials who are Dependent Adults and 89% of Millennials who are On Their Own. But that number rises to 92% among Millennials who are Starting a Family. This group contains a higher percentage of Hispanics, who tend to be heavy users of radio.”  See the whole report and more here.
