NAB/RAB Radio Show Report.  Media consultant Holland Cooke files this report from Austin and the NAB/RAB Radio Show.  In Cooke’s convention notes this morning are takeaways from the “Creating Unforgettable User Experiences” panel, some thoughts from the “Advertiser Breakfast,” a bunch of handy tips for sales people in the “Selling to Car Dealers” session, and some wisdom for “Attracting and Retaining Top Sales Talent.”  Check out Cooke’s report here.

2017 Marconi Award Winners Announced.  The winners of the 2017 Marconi Awards from the National Association of Broadcasters were announced at the NAB Marconi Awards Dinner & Show at the NAB/RAB Radio Show in Austin last night (9/7).  Some notable winners from the spoken-word formats include: all-news WCBS-AM, New York wins Legendary Station of the Year; all-news WTOP-FM, Washington is named Major Market Station of the Year; news/talk WDBO-FM, Orlando is honored with News/Talk Station of the Year; news/talk KRMG-FM, Tulsa wins Medium Market Station of the Year; and KTCK-FM, Dallas takes home the Sports Station of the Year honors.

Hofstra University’s WRHU-FM, Hempstead Wins Second Marconi Award.  College station WRHU, Hempstead, New York was honored with its second NAB Marconi Award for Non-Commercial Station of the Year.  WRHU won the award in the same category in 2014.    TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison is a Hofstra graduate, charter inductee in the WRHU Hall of Fame, and member of the university’s Lawrence Herbert School of Communication executive advisory board.  Harrison states, “I am bursting with pride at my association with this amazing institution and radio station.  Receiving the Marconi Award as best non-commercial radio station in the nation – not just once, but twice in the past three years – is a remarkable accomplishment.  It is a tribute to Dean Evan Cornog, station general manager Bruce Avery and WRHU operations director John T. Mullen, as well as the Hofstra faculty and serious-minded students that this school continually attracts.”  Pictured at the Marconi Awards last night (l-r): Hofstra alumnus Mike Leslie, Avery, and Weiss Agency executive VP (and member of the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication executive advisory board) Heather Cohen.

NYPost: Carton Charity Reported ‘Zero’ Money Spent on Program Expenses. Things are not getting better for suspended WFAN, New York morning personality Craig Carton after his arrest on Wednesday (9/6) on federal fraud charges in connection with an alleged concert tickets resale Ponzi scheme.  Today, the New York Post is reporting that Carton’s charitable foundation Tic Toc Stop – set up in 2013 to “fight Tourette Syndrome” – documented in its 2015 tax filing that it spent $0 on program expenses.  Those expenses would be to fund programs designed to serve those with Tourette.  The story quotes charity watchdog group Charity Navigator saying, “We rarely ever see organizations report zero for program expenses…we occasionally see low ratios, but this is definitely far outside the norm.”  There’s no official allegation that Carton spent funds donated to the charity on gambling debts – the alleged reason for his involvement in the Ponzi scheme – but, obviously it doesn’t look good for Carton.  Read the Post story here.

St. Louis Personality Frank O. Pinion Moving to Crosstown KFNS.  Afternoon drive talk show host Frank O. Pinion announced recently that he’s leaving CH Holdings talk station KTRS, St. Louis after 20 years there.  Now, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Dan Caesar reports that O. Pinion, a.k.a. John Craddock, will join Randy Markel-owned sports talker KFNS for the afternoon drive slot.  O. Pinion doesn’t talk sports – he even confesses he knows little about sports – so he’ll do the kind of show he’s been doing in the market.  As was his deal with KTRS, O. Pinion will broker his show on KFNS.  KTRS president and GM Mark Dorsey says KMOV-TV meteorologist Kent Ehrhardt will host afternoons Monday through Thursday while they seek a full-time host.  Paul Harris continues to host the Friday show.  Get the Post-Dispatch story here.

Dave Ramsey’s Smart Money Tour in Baton Rouge.  With the help of affiliate station WBRP, Baton Rouge “Talk 107.3 FM,” nationally syndicated talk superstar Dave Ramsey brought his “Smart Money” tour to the Healing Place Church in Baton Rouge .  At yesterday’s event, Ramsey personalities Chris Hogan and Anthony O’Neal walked attendees through topics like budgeting, paying off debt and saving for retirement.  Pictured above are Guaranty Media team members with Chris Hogan, all holding a copy of his latest book.  They are: Mike Benson, Trey Honore, Stephanie Morris, Ellen Diedrich, John Burke, Jessi Mapes, Leah Gaiennie, TJ Solis, Mary LeBlanc, Casey McKenzie, Blain Bech and Hogan.

Skyview Networks and NHL’s Golden Knights Partner.  Broadcast solutions firm Skyview Networks and the NHL’s newest franchise – the Vegas Golden Knights – announce their partnership for maximum distribution of Golden Knights programming broadcast on radio partner Lotus Broadcasting’s network of affiliates.  The companies say that as the season begins, Skyview will “provide the Golden Knights with their turnkey satellite distribution, as well as AdView Inventory Management and Live Read Logging software for full control of the organization’s advertising inventory.  The seamless communication between Skyview’s full menu of services will allow the highest quality of broadcast management from advertiser to on-air performance.”  Golden Knights president Kerry Bubolz comments, “Skyview is an innovative leader in the broadcast technology industry.  Their expertise in this space will ensure that our network affiliates receive best-in-class broadcast quality and business services.”

Westwood One Reveals Podcast Research. It’s called The Podcast Download Fall 2017 Report and syndication and sales unit Westwood One calls it a “deep-dive into the consumption habits of podcast listeners” that brings to light some major takeaways on listeners’ tolerance for advertising within the on-demand space.  The report was created in partnership with MARU/Vision Critical to “give brands, content creators, and podcast producers a look at the consumption habits and attitudes of these coveted media junkies.”  WW1 says some of the key findings include that: Heavy podcast listeners are voracious media and tech junkies; Podcasts are under commercialized – there is an opportunity to add more commercial breaks and ad units; Heavy podcast consumers are more accepting of pre-produced ads; and “speed listening” is real – 42% of weekly podcast listeners say they have increased the speed of the podcast.  Half of heavy podcast listeners have speed-listened.  This DVR-style “ad zipping” is a reality for podcasting.   See more here.

Trump’s Deal with Democrats Top News/Talk Story of the Week.  The deal President Trump struck with Democratic leaders for disaster relief, a temporary budget and a short-term debt ceiling hike was the most-talked-about story on news/talk radio this week, landing atop the Talkers TenTM.  At #2 this week was Hurricane Irma’s path toward Florida and the related Hurricane Harvey aftermath.  Coming in at #3 was North Korea’s nuclear threats, followed by Hillary Clinton’s latest book at #4.  The Talkers TenTM is a weekly chart of the top stories and people and is the result of ongoing research from TALKERS magazine.  It is published every Friday at Talkers.com.  View this week’s entire chart here.

Radio Prepares for Hurricane Irma.  With Hurricane Irma predicted to hit Florida this weekend, Beasley Media Group reports that its stations in the state have their Hurricane Action Plans in place.  The company says, “All of our stations in Tampa are doing regular updates on air with our weather partner, ABC Action News.  The jocks are giving updates on weather, shelters, sand bag stations, etc.  We’re directing everyone to the station websites /Storm (ex. 995QYK.com/Storm) for all updates.  On the Storm pages, we’re populating feeds from ABC Action News and posting information and announcements from our local governments and the state.  The pages are featured in our rotators and we have a breaking news bar across the top of the sites.   When we social any updates we direct people back to this page where all of the information is being updated.”  In the Fort Myers market, Beasley is teaming with WBBH-TV (NBC) and WZVN-TV (ABC) to co-ordinate and provide hurricane information.  In the Boca Raton market, the company is teaming with WPEC-TV (CBS).  At iHeartMedia, the company says that its five Tallahassee stations – led by news/talk WFLA-FM – are regularly tracking updates and are prepared with a full staff to broadcast wall-to-wall coverage of the storm, including up-to-date storm and traffic information as well as resources for emergency situations and community relief.  The company says if the storm comes close to the region, they will simulcast WFLA-FM across all stations with staff from each station helping with the broadcast, station operations and phones.  On the network level, ABC News Radio is providing extensive live coverage with correspondents Jim Ryan and Alex Stone reporting from Florida.  ABC will provide multiple one-minute updates each hour beginning 6:00 am ET on Saturday.  On Sunday, live coverage will be anchored by correspondent Aaron Katersky from 6:00 am – 12:00 noon, ET and 7:00-8:00 pm, ET, joined by Ryan and Stone, and correspondent Karen Travers.

TALKERS News Notes. During the third annual Interactive Advertising Bureau Podcast Upfront, iHeartRadio unveils four new, original podcasts.  iHeartRadio says the announcement underscores “a year of tremendous growth from the podcast platform, which has seen a 60% increase in listenership from iHeartRadio’s more than 100 million registered users.”  The new shows are: “The Oh My Disney Podcast,” celebrating all things Disney and pop culture by Disney fans, for Disney fans; “The Fatherly Podcast,” a weekly ​podcast​ about parenting, hosted by veteran journalist and Fatherly editor-at-large Joshua David Stein; “Scrubbing In With Becca Tilley,” hosted by beloved two-time contestant of “The Bachelor,” Becca Tilley; and “Summit: Chairlift,” a weekly podcast that gives listeners a substantive look into the minds of today’s most innovative thinkers, recorded as they ride a chairlift to the summit of Powder Mountain in Utah…..Just ahead of last night’s 2017 NFL season opener between the reigning champion New England Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs, CBS RADIO announced that it and the Patriots have inked a multi-year contract extension to keep Pats games on sports talk WBZ-FM, “98.5 The Sports Hub.”  CBS reports that Bob Socci and Scott Zolak will continue as play-by-play host and color analyst, respectively.  CBS RADIO has served as the flagship radio partner of the Patriots since 1994 when the games aired on all-news WBZ-AM, before transitioning to then-rock WBCN-FM in 1995…..Cox Media Group’s Atlanta stations – led by news/talk WSB-AM/WSBB-FM “News 95.5 and AM750 WSB” – partnered with WSB-TV and the Atlanta Journal Constitution on a bottled water drive for victims of Hurricane Harvey.  Listeners, viewers and readers came out to support the Convoy of Care in force, packing 10 trucks of clean drinking water over only two days.  At times, the line of vehicles waiting to drop off bottled water stretched nearly a half mile.  Donations came from private citizens as well as local businesses and organizations…..CBS RADIO Philadelphia radio stations KYW “Newsradio,” news/talk WPHT, sports talk WIP-FM, classic hits WOGL, AC WTDY, and country WXTU are partnering with The Travis Manion Foundation to host 9/11 Heroes Run 5K races and 1 mile Fun Runs in the Philadelphia region during the month of September.  The Travis Manion Foundation’s Houston office is currently assisting in flood recovery and aid.  At all 9/11 Heroes Run race locations around the country, CBS will run with a Texas flag that will then be sent to Houston, which hosts the largest 9/11 Heroes Run in the country each year (more than 5,000 participants).  Due to the tragic flooding, the Houston 9/11 Heroes Run has been postponed until November 11 – Veterans Day…..ESPN O&O WEPN, New York “ESPN 98.7FM” adds the services of New York Giants safety Landon Collins to its Giants coverage with his weekly, Monday afternoon appearances on the afternoon drive Michael Kay program.  Also, New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott will be a part of WEPN’s coverage of Jets football this season.

Michael Berry Is This Week’s Guest on Harrison Podcast.  One of the most interesting and provocative individuals on talk radio today, Michael Berry of KTRH, Houston, is this week’s guest on the award-winning PodcastOne series, “Up Close and Far Out with Michael Harrison,” as Texas’ largest city remains in the spotlight of our nation’s concerns.  Harrison and Berry discuss the talk show host’s personal and terrifying experience during the devastation of the storm.  He was in Louisiana on business when he got word that his wife and two young sons had to be rescued from the flood in a boat.  Berry talks about his efforts to get back to them in the chaos of closed roads and flooded routes.  Fortunately, the family was eventually safely reunited but the feelings and lessons learned will last a lifetime.  The conversation, however, does not stop there.  Berry – whose edgy satire often makes him the target of accusations of being a racist – is actually the opposite of a racist.  He is married to an Indian woman and the couple has two black, adopted sons from Ethiopia.  Berry candidly discusses his fascinating family life and personal views on matters of race and integration.  Emerging as a talk media figure to be taken quite seriously, he does two shows per day on the iHeartMedia Houston powerhouse in addition to being independently syndicated on a network of 20-plus stations.  He is a high-ranking member of the TALKERS Heavy Hundred.  He is this past year’s recipient of iHeartMedia’s in-house Talk Show Host of the Year award.  Though he portrays himself with somewhat of a redneck persona, Berry has impressive academic legal credentials and is a long-time, well-known figure in Houston where he once served as a member of the city council and as Mayor Pro Tem. Music Radio News and Career Moves. Some not-so-surprising news out of Chicago comes as Hubbard Radio announces Kathy Hart – formerly one half of the “Eric & Kathy” show on hot AC WTMX – will not return to the program she’s been away from since April.  The official memo from Hubbard Radio Chicago VP Jeff England says, “We wish her all the best as she moves on to the next phase of her career.  To our listeners and clients, rest assured that Eric [Ferguson], the morning show team, and all of us at ‘The Mix’ will continue to serve you as we enter a new era of morning radio on the station.”  Chicago media writer Robert Feder reports on the matter, noting that Hart’s absence was widely believed to be over her compensation for her performance on the top-rated show.  However, as she sat out and attempted via agents to restructure her deal, the show’s ratings didn’t suffer at all, hurting her case for a new contract.  Although both Ferguson and Hart are well paid, it’s believed Ferguson makes much more than Hart and that was the real issue for her.  Read Feder’s report here…..Cumulus Media is presenting a new contest to discover “the nation’s newest rock star.”  Saying that “rock is on the rise again,” the company unveils the “neXt2rock 2017” competition.  The neXt2rock 2017 contest is being announced on-air by iconic Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale.  The winner of this four-month-long competition receives a record deal with Big Machine/John Varvatos Records.  Sixty-one Cumulus stations in 47 markets will conduct local, grassroots searches, with additional national participation made possible by Cumulus’ digital properties and syndicated rock shows.  Cumulus CEO Mary Berner says, “With the renewed interest in the rock genre among Millennials and Gen Xers, Cumulus has even more opportunities for growth, providing expanded exclusive content and programming for fans, and an even larger audience for America’s newest rock star.”  The finalists in this competition will compete at a live concert event, hosted at the Viper Room in Los Angeles on December 12, where the panel of celebrity mentor judges will select the neXt2rock 2017 winner…..iHeartMedia adds a new urban AC signal to the Houston market, flipping FM translator K283CH (fed by KTBZ-HD2) and branding it “104.5 KISS FM” with the slogan “Houston’s Best R&B.”   Company urban brand coordinator Michael Saunders says, “We have a great opportunity to deliver some of the hottest names and music in the R&B industry to the diverse Houston audience combined with spoken-word entertainment from some of the biggest names in show business with Steve Harvey and Keith Sweat.”

 

 

Round Three of August PPMs Released. The third of four rounds of August 2017 PPM ratings information from Nielsen Audio has been released for 12 markets including: Portland, Charlotte, San Antonio, Pittsburgh, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Cincinnati, Orlando, Cleveland, Kansas City, and Columbus. Nielsen’s August 2017 survey period covered July 19 – August 16. You can view all the 6+ numbers from subscribing stations here. TWELVE TAKEAWAYS

1) Portland – Six negative trends in succession deflated KXL-FM by more than two full-shares (4.9 – 4.5 – 4.1 – 3.9 – 3.6 – 3.5 – 2.8, 6+), but the Alpha Media news/talk facility bounces back with a gain of eight-tenths to 3.6 (#15 to #12, 6+). Wild fluctuations continue for Oregon Public Broadcasting’s KOPB, which was +.9 in March; -.8 in May; +.6 in June; -.9 in July; and now +.6 in August (7.1 – 7.7, 6+). This marks the 21st straight time that news/talk KOPB occupies the runner-up position. Improving by six-tenths as well is Entercom hot AC KRSK “105.1 The Buzz – Today’s Best Mix” (4.8 – 5.4, 6+), which has its best showing since March (6.0, 6+) and jumps from eighth to fourth. Not only does an uptick of two-tenths to 4.1 (6+) by Alpha Media’s KBFF pull the plug on three consecutive (minor) downward trends that resulted in a loss of one-half share (4.4 – 4.3 – 4.2 – 3.9, 6+), “Live 95.5” (#11 to #9) pulls ahead of iHeartMedia CHR KKRZ “Z-100 Portland’s #1 Hit Music Station” (4.0 – 3.9, -.1, #10 to #11, 6+). Flat at 8.6 (6+), “Z-100” cluster-mate – adult contemporary KKCW “K-103” – is #1 for the 39th time in the last 41 ratings periods. June’s 9.1 was the highest 6+-share for “K-103” – which was down by one-half share in July – since the 15.3 it posted in “Holiday” 2016. Co-owned KFBW “105.9 The Brew Portland’s Rock Station” though is down by a combined nine-tenths in back-to-back sweeps (5.0 – 4.7 – 4.1, 6+) but carries on in ninth-place. Flat at #16, rhythmic CHR sibling KXJM “Jam’n 107.5 – Portland’s #1 for Hip-Hop and Throwbacks” is a model of consistency, as it posts a 2.6 (6+) for the sixth time in the last seven survey periods. Having progressed by six-tenths in July, Entercom’s KNRK “94/7 Alternative Portland” surrenders all but one-tenth of that gain (3.9 – 3.4, -.5, 6+), slipping from #12 to #14; July’s 3.9 was its highest 6+-share since 4.6 in February 2014. The seven-tenths advantage Entercom-owned KWJJ “99.5 The Wolf – Great Country for the Great Northwest” had in July over Alpha Media’s KUPL “98.7 The Bull – #1 For New Country” is whittled down to three-tenths as “The Wolf” (+.7 in July) is off four-tenths (5.6 – 5.2, fourth to fifth, 6+), while “The Bull” (+.5 in July) is flat at 4.9 (6+), but drops from sixth to seventh. Prior to gaining three-tenths in June, “The Wolf” was a combined -1.8 in March, April, and May (6.4 – 5.5 – 4.8 – 4.6, 6+), while “The Bull” was down in consecutive sweeps (April – May – June) for a -1.1 (5.5 – 4.5 – 4.4, 6+). The two country rivals finished back-to-back at seventh and eighth, respectively, in both May and June.

2) Charlotte – After losing two full-shares since March via four straight decreases (7.7 – 7.6 – 7.2 – 6.2 – 5.7, 6+), iHeartMedia classic rock WRFX “99.7 The Fox” picks up two-tenths to 5.9 (6+) and jumps from fourth to second. “The Fox” had been #1 in five straight survey periods before getting dislodged in June. Immediately in advance of its just-concluded string of four straight declines, WRFX posted three consecutive positive trends that accounted for a +1.3 (6.4 – 7.2 – 7.3 – 7.7, 6+). Its +.8 in January curtailed a series of three consecutive downward moves that yielded a -1.5 (7.9 – 7.3 – 6.7 – 6.4, 6+). Rocketing from #17 to #12, Educational Media Foundation contemporary Christian WRCM shares (6+) honors for highest July 2017 – August 2017 gain by any station in the 12 PPM-markets whose data was released Thursday (2.4 – 3.8, +1.4, 6+). Moreover, this is the best 6+-performance for Charlotte’s “Positive & Encouraging K-Love” since returning in print exactly one year ago (August 2016). A gain of one-half share takes Entercom’s WFNZ “Sports Radio The Fan” (steady at #19) to 1.2, its best 6+-stat since February (1.2, as well). Another month means another opportunity for a country station to be #1 in “The Hornet’s Nest.” Taking its turn in August – as it did in June – is iHeartMedia’s WKKT “96.9 The Kat – Charlotte’s #1 For New Country,” which advances from #4. Displaced at the top and falling to #5 is Beasley Media Group-owned WSOC “Country’s Hottest Hits”; WKKT gains four-tenths (5.7 – 6.1, 6+) whereas WSOC loses four-tenths (6.0 – 5.6, 6+). When WSOC succeeded WKKT at #1 in June, it likewise did so by jumping from fourth-place. Having logged a very consistent (6+) January 2017 through May 2017 line of 5.7 – 5.9 – 5.7 – 5.9 – 5.8, “The Kat” was up six-tenths in June to 6.4 (6+). Consequently, it bypassed “Country’s Hottest Hits,” which (in June) relinquished the six-tenths it gained in May (6.0 – 6.6 – 6.0, 6+), shifting from second to fourth. Prior to April (when it was +.8), WSOC was a cumulative -1.8 in three successive downward moves dating back to the “Holiday” 2016 report (7.0 – 6.3 – 5.8 – 5.2, 6+). Moreover, 5.2 in March was the lowest 6+-share in its PPM-history. In “Holiday” 2016, “The Kat” trailed “Country’s Hottest Hits” by three full-shares (7.0 to 4.0, 6+). In the 12 survey periods of calendar year 2015 (excluding “Holiday” 2015), WKKT was #1 six times: February, May, August, September, October, and December; WSOC was on top five times: January, March, April, June, and July. Making it a clean sweep, the two shared the penthouse in November of that year. Following July’s +1.2 to 3.4, its highest 6+-stat since reappearing in print in November 2016, Radio One urban contemporary WQNC “92.7 The Block” forfeits 75% of the increase (2.5, -.9, 6+), dipping from #14 to #17. Decreasing by six-tenths each are Beasley Media Group urban contemporary WPEG “Power 98” (5.9 – 5.3, 6+), which shifts from second to sixth, and iHeartMedia adult hits WLKO “102.9 The Lake” (4.5, seventh to ninth, 6+). “The Lake” had been an overall +1.3 via three straight increases (3.8 – 4.0 – 4.9 – 5.1, 6+). A collective -1.4 in five consecutive downward trends (4.9 – 4.7 – 4.3 – 4.2 – 3.6 – 3.5, 6+), CHR sibling WHQC “Channel 96.1” slips from #13 to #14. In March, “Channel 96.1” had its string of consecutive increases that produced a cumulative +1.4 snapped at three (3.5 – 3.6 – 3.8 – 4.9, 6+). Down or flat for the seventh straight time, but unchanged at #18, Davidson College’s WDAV “Classical Public Radio” is a combined -1.7 since January (3.6 – 3.2 – 3.1 – 3.0 – 3.0 – 2.3 – 2.3 – 1.9, 6+).

3) San Antonio – Regressing by one-half share in back-to-back sweeps (3.8 – 3.3 – 2.8, May – June – July, 6+), KSTX recoups that loss in its entirety with a +1.0 in August. As a result, the Texas Public Radio news/talk outlet is back at 3.8, moving from #16 to #13 (6+). It had been two years since KSTX last reached the three-share level (August 2015, 3.0, 6+) and owing to three straight increases, including May’s +1.3, it nearly doubled its 6+-share (2.0 – 2.1 – 2.5 – 3.8, 6+). Despite a one-tenth uptick to 3.2 (6+), thus halting six straight sweeps without an increase for a -1.6 (4.7 – 4.7 – 4.5 – 4.5 – 4.4 – 3.3 – 3.1, 6+), iHeartMedia news/talk WOAI backslides from #14 to #15. Prior to June, the last time WOAI fell below a four-share (6+) was September 2014 (3.7). An improvement of six-tenths by cluster-mate KRPT takes “The Bull – San Antonio’s Classic Country Station” to 1.0, the first time it has reached the one-share level (6+) since December 2013’s 1.1. While it is #1 for the seventh successive time, Cox Media Group classic hits-oldies outlet KONO-FM “101.1 San Antonio’s Greatest Hits” is off by one-half share (7.1 – 6.6, 6+). It departed the lead position in October after nine straight sweeps there. Recent (6+) fluctuations for “101.1 San Antonio’s Greatest Hits” include October 2016’s -1.0; November’s +.9; December’s -1.1; “Holiday” 2016’s -1.3; January’s +1.1; April’s +.8; May’s -.6; and now August’s -.5. Meanwhile, after being frozen at 5.4 in May, June, and July, Cox Media Group’s KCYY “Y-100 San Antonio’s New Country Leader” adds two-tenths to 5.6 (6+) to progress from third to second. In the runner-up slot the last two months, KQXT “Q-101.9 – San Antonio’s Best Variety” slips to fourth-place (6.1 – 4.8, 6+). On top in the “Holiday” 2016 report with an 11.8 (6+), the iHeartMedia adult contemporary outlet lost one full-share (-1.0) in February; was a collective +1.5 in March and April (5.2 – 4.2 – 4.7 – 5.6, 6+); regressed by -1.0 in May (5.6 – 4.6, 6+); regained May’s loss in its entirety in June (5.6, +1.0, 6+); was +.5 in July; and is now -1.3 in August. At the same time, with a one-half share gain to 1.8 (6+), its regional Mexican HD3 channel erases the collective loss of four-tenths via four straight down or flat trends (1.7 – 1.7 – 1.7 – 1.6 – 1.3, 6+) and enters the top twenty at #20.

4) Pittsburgh – In the market’s hot AC tussle, CBS Radio’s WBZZ “Star 100.7 Plays the Hits” posts its third straight improvement for an overall +.9 (4.2 – 4.5 – 4.7 – 5.0 5.1, 6+) and remains at #7, while Steel City Media’s WLTJ “Real Variety Q-92.9” is without as decrease for the fourth consecutive survey period for a cumulative gain of six-tenths (2.8 – 2.8 – 3.0 – 3.2 – 3.4, 6+), climbing from #13 to #12. A collective +1.8 as the result of four successive up or flat trends between February and June (3.3 – 3.3 – 4.1 – 5.1 – 5.1, 6+), iHeartMedia alternative WXDX returned it all in July (-1.8), but “The X at 105.9” regains half of that mammoth loss (3.3 – 4.2, +.9, 6+) to return to the top ten (#11 to #10). In July, WYEP was part of a three-way scrum at #14, but with a +.6 to 1.9 (6+), the Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting triple A has the #14 slot all to itself. Moreover, 1.9 represents the best 6+-stat in the station’s PPM-history. Despite being locked on 9.6 (6+) in June, July, and August, iHeartMedia classic hits-oldies WWSW “94.5 – 3WS” remains on top for the fifth straight month. After posting three consecutive increases netting a +1.3 (9.1 – 9.9 – 10.3 – 10.4, 6+), WWSW forfeited eight-tenths in June. Immediately before picking up eight-tenths in March, “3WS” was -4.6 since “Holiday” 2016 (13.7 – 9.3 – 9.1, 6+). Co-owned CHR WKST “96.1 Kiss FM – Pittsburgh’s #1 Music Station” erodes by a collective -2.1 in three straight decreases (9.1 – 8.7 – 7.6 – 7.0, 6+), but carries on in fourth-place; 7.0 is its lowest 6+-share since 6.7 in the “Holiday” 2016 report. Trending 9.6 – 9.3 – 9.6 – 9.2 (6+) since April, rock sibling WDVE sputters by one-half share to 8.7 (6+), which is – likewise – its softest 6+-stat since “Holiday” 2016 (8.4); WDVE remains at #2. WWSW and WDVE were tied at #1 in June. Unchanged at #9, CBS Radio-owned WDSY “Y-108 Pittsburgh’s Country” drops one-tenth to 4.5 (6+) to snap at three its consecutive string of up or flat trends that netted seven-tenths (3.9 – 4.4 – 4.4 – 4.6, 6+). Off by one-tenth as well (to 3.7, 6+), iHeartMedia’s WPGB “Big 104.7 – Pittsburgh’s #1 For New Country” drops out of the top ten (#10 to #11); “Big 104.7” was a combined +.9 in June and July (2.9 – 3.5 – 3.8, 6+).

5) Sacramento – Apparently tired of posting an 8.3 (6+) three times in the last four ratings periods (8.3 – 8.3 – 8.5 – 8.3, 6+), Entercom-owned KSEG explodes with a +1.4 to 9.7, its strongest 6+-showing in exactly one year (9.9, August 2016) as “96.9 The Eagle – Sacramento’s Classic Rock” repeats at #1. A combined -.6 in back-to-back monthlies (9.2 – 9.0 – 8.6, 6+, February – March – April), CBS Radio adult contemporary KYMX “Mix 96” recaptured all of it in May only to be a collective -1.4 in June and July (9.2 – 8.7 – 7.8, 6+). “Mix 96” dusts itself in August though with a gain of one-half share to 8.3 (6+) and continues at #2. Ranked third for five straight sweeps before reaching #1 in “Holiday” 2016, “Mix” rebounded from January’s -4.8 with a full-share February increase (13.0 – 8.2 – 9.2, 6+). Registering a gain of six-tenths (3.9 – 4.5, 6+), Capital Public Radio news/talk KXJZ advances from eighth to fifth and has its highest 6+-showing since November’s 4.8. As a result of six consecutive survey periods without an increase, Entravision Spanish adult hits KXSE lost exactly half of its 6+-share (2.2 – 2.2 – 2.1 – 2.1 – 1.6 – 1.5 – 1.1, 6+), but “104.3 Radio Jose” makes up roughly half of that -1.1 with a one-half share gain to 1.6 and cracks the top twenty (#18, 6+). Up two-tenths in both June and July (5.6 – 5.8 – 6.0, 6+), CBS Radio’s KNCI “New Country 105.1” sputters by six-tenths in August to 5.4 (6+) but remains in fourth-place, while iHeartMedia’s similarly-formatted KBEB “The Bull” (+.2 in July after June’s -.2) flounders by eight-tenths (3.1 – 2.3, 6+), dropping from #12 to #15. Even though it is off for the fourth straight time for an overall -.9 (3.4 – 3.3 – 2.8 – 2.6 – 2.5, 6+), Entravision-owned country KNTY “101.9 – The Wolf” nonetheless overtakes “The Bull” and actually improves from #15 to #14. As a result of a -.1 in May, “The Wolf” had its streak of successive increases which generated a +1.5 (1.9 – 2.1 – 2.3 – 2.4 – 2.7 – 3.4, 6+) end at five. June’s -.2 by “The Bull” concluded three straight improvements that netted eight-tenths (2.3 – 2.7 – 2.9 – 3.1, 6+). By dropping one-tenth to 4.4 (6+), CBS Radio hot AC KZZO “Now 100.5 – Today’s Best Hits Without the Rap” halts at three its consecutive string of up or flat trends that netted six-tenths (3.9 – 4.0 – 4.0 – 4.5, 6+) and falls from sixth to seventh. Regressing by one-half share (1.9 – 1.4, 6+) Educational Media Foundation contemporary Christian KLVB “Positive & Encouraging K-Love” slides from #16 to #19 and has its lowest 6+-share since December (1.4, as well).

6) Salt Lake City – Returning to the runner-up slot after skidding to fifth in July, Bonneville news/talk KSL (5.8, 6+) is locked there with Capital Broadcasting hot AC KBZN “Now 97.9 Today’s Best Music” (5.3 – 5.8, +.5, 6+), which was off by six-tenths in July. Ten recent KSL fluctuations include +2.0 (October 2016), -.9 (November), +1.1 (December), -1.5 (“Holiday” 2016); +2.1 (January 2017); -2.1 (February); +.6 (April); -1.1 (May); -.9 (July); and now +.6 (August). Off by a collective -1.2 via three straight dips (3.6 – 3.4 – 3.0 – 2.4, 6+), University of Utah news/talk KUER “90.1 NPR Utah” regains just over half of that loss with a +.7 to 3.1 (6+) and inches up from #16 to #15. Frozen on 1.1 (6+) in April, May, and June before falling to .8 (6+) in July, Alpha Media regional Mexican KDUT “104.3 La Gran D” spikes by seven-tenths as well, nearly doubling July’s .8 to 1.5 (#23, 6+). Notching a 3.7 in four of the last five survey periods (3.7 – 3.7 – 3.9 – 3.7 – 3.7, 6+), Broadway Media’s KXRK “X-96 Utah’s Original Alternative” hangs out a half-share increase to 4.2 (tenth to ninth), its best 6+-performance since June 2016 (4.2, as well). Rhythmic CHR sibling KUUU “U-92” is within 2.0 – 2.8 range for the 15th consecutive sweep (2.2 – 2.1, #18 to #17, 6+). Notwithstanding an August -.6 to 7.4, (after July’s +1.1 to 8.0, 6+), Bonneville adult contemporary KSFI “FM 100.3 – Better Music Better Work Day” occupies the #1 slot for the fourth straight month. Following three consecutive sweeps on top, “FM 100.3” shifted to #2, having dropped 12.3 shares in January (20.6 – 8.3, 6+). Until that massive spiral, “FM 100.3” didn’t have a decrease since April 2016 (5.3 – 5.7 – 6.2 – 6.3 – 6.7 – 7.0 – 7.3 – 7.3 – 11.4 – 20.6, 6+), nearly quadrupling its 6+-stat since then with a staggering +15.3. It would be quite the understatement to note Broadway Media CHR KUDD is been on an extremely wild ride lately. To recap, “Mix 105.1 – All the Hits” was a combined +1.5 in March and April; -.9 in May; +1.6 in June; -.5 in July; and now a staggering -1.7 in August (5.2 – 3.5, 6+). June’s 5.7 was the highest 6+-stat in its PPM-history, while the 3.5 in August is its lowest since February. Prior to March, “Mix” was trending 3.5 – 3.9 – 3.5 (6+); it fades from the top ten (#5 to #11). Eroding by -1.1 each are Bonneville’s KRSP “103.5 The Arrow – Utah’s Classic Rock” (5.1, second to fifth, 6+) and independent KSOP-FM “Z-104 Utah’s #1 Country” (6.0 – 4.9, third to eighth, 6+). “The Arrow” was a combined +1.6 as the result of four successive monthlies without a loss (4.6 – 4.9 – 4.9 – 5.5 – 6.2, 6+); July’s 6.2 was its strongest 6+-share since last November’s 6.8. A -.1 (to 6.0, 6+) in July by “Z-104” halted at four its streak of consecutive improvements that netted a +2.1 (4.0 – 4.3 – 4.5 – 5.3 – 6.1, 6+); June’s 6.1 represents KSOP-FM’s strongest ever 6+ PPM share. Following four straight upticks that nearly doubled its 6+-share (.9 – 1.1 – 1.4 – .6 – 1.7, 6+), Alpha Media Spanish contemporary KBMG “Latino 106.3” falters by one-half share to 1.2 (#24).

7) Las Vegas – Advancing from #9 to a three-way logjam at #3, CBS Radio-owned KLUC “98.5 Las Vegas #1 Hit Music Station” hauls out a +1.3 to 5.3, its best 6+-stat since March (5.5). A gain of six-tenths (4.7 – 5.3, 6+) takes hot AC cluster-mate KMXB to its highest 6+-share since 5.4 in March as “Mix 94.1” (fifth in July) joins KLUC at #3. Trending a repetitive 1.7 – 2.1 – 1.7 – 2.1 (6+) since April, Univision Radio Spanish contemporary KRGT busts out a +.8 to 2.9 – its best 6+-performance in exactly one year (3.7, August 2016) and “Latino Mix 99.3” rockets from #20 to #13 (6+). Notching positive spikes of one-half share each are Lotus classic rock and Spanish adult hits siblings KXPT “97.1 The Point” (4.8 – 5.3, fourth to third, 6+) and KWID “La Buena 101.9” (3.1 – 3.6, #13 to #10, 6+). Ironically, “The Point” and “La Buena” were both off by six-tenths in July. Four-tenths of a share separated the top two finishers in July and that’s the case again in August as Beasley Media Group classic hits-oldies KKLZ “96.3 – 70s, 80s and More” drops four-tenths (7.1 – 6.7, 6+) as does iHeartMedia adult contemporary KSNE “Sunny 106.5” (6.7 – 6.3, 6+). With its strongest 6+-share since last November’s 7.2, KKLZ was +1.0 in July and it repeats at #1, while “Sunny” (-.8 in July) remains at #2. Prior to August, the five most recent fluctuations for “Sunny,” which had been on top in each of the last eight ratings periods, are +1.8 in March; -1.1 in April; -1.2 in May; +1.4 in June; and -.8 in July. Following three successive downward trends (8.1 – 7.4 – 6.0 – 5.7, 6+), KSNE was +.7 in September and +.6 in October, climbing to first – where it had been for 22 successive ratings periods. A collective +.9 in June and July (1.6 – 2.1 – 2.5, 6+), University of Nevada jazz/smooth AC KUNV “95.1 The Source” erodes by roughly 50%, surrendering a -1.3 to 1.2 and plummets from the top twenty (#15 to #23, 6+). Having reeled off three straight gains for a collective +1.8 (3.1 – 3.4 – 3.5 – 4.9, 6+), Beasley Media Group-owned KCYE “The Coyote – We Are Country” falters by a collective two full-shares in June, July, and August (4.9 – 4.7 – 3.7 – 2.9, 6+) and exits the top ten (#10 to #13). It is a similar story for co-owned KOAS “Old School 105.7,” which is -1.8 in three straight decreases (6.0 – 5.6 – 4.7 – 4.2, 6+) and falls from fifth to eighth. Off by one-half share as well are CBS Radio rhythmic hot AC KXQQ “Q-100.5” (3.8, seventh to ninth, 6+), which returns the +.5 it gained in three straight up or flat trends (3.8 – 4.0 – 4.0 – 4.3, 6+), and Lotus-owned KOMP “92.3 The Rock Station” (3.7 – 3.2, #10 to #11, 6+).

8) Cincinnati – Until now, the highest 6+-share that Educational Community Radio’s WOBO has reached since first appearing in print in April 2014 is November 2016’s 1.0. That changes in August though as “The Station with Something for Everyone” trots out an increase of seven-tenths, taking WOBO to 1.6 (#20 to #18, 6+). Consistent in its last four (6+) trends (3.2 – 3.3 – 3.2 – 3.1), Cincinnati Public Radio news/talk WVXU adds one-half share to 3.6 ((#13 to #11, 6+), mirroring what it recorded in March. Improving by four-tenths to 2.8 (#15 to #14, 6+), Radio One urban-rhythmic oldies WOSL “100.3 R&B + Old School” brings to a close a successive string of five downward trends accounting for a -1.5 (3.9 – 3.6 – 3.4 – 2.9 – 2.8 – 2.4, 6+). Once the perennial market leader, WLW was last in sole possession of the top spot in August 2016 and was tied for the lead in May 2017. With a gain of three-tenths (9.3 – 9.6, 6+), the iHeartMedia news/talker returns to the top after back-to-back stays in the runner-up slot. Co-owned news/talk WKRC gains three-tenths to 3.6 (#12 to #11, 6+), thus pulling the plug on three straight declines that resulted in a loss of two full-shares (5.3 – 4.3 – 4.2 – 3.3, 6+). Dislodged from #1 is Cumulus Media classic hits-oldies outlet WGRR, which erodes by a full-share (9.7 – 8.7, 6+) and fills WLW’s vacated runner-up slot. On top between January and July, WGRR was a combined +.7 in June and July (9.0 – 9.3 – 9.7, 6+); 9.7 was the station’s best 6+-performance since last October’s 9.8. Following a -.7 in March, WGRR posted a +1.0 in April (9.2 – 8.5 – 9.5, 6+). Prior to the “Holiday” 2016 sweep, it occupied the top spot for four straight months. A +.8 in January ended four successive down or flat sweeps that produced a -1.6 (9.8 – 9.8 – 9.6 – 8.8 – 8.2, 6+) as WGRR progressed from second to first. After more than doubling its 6+-share in three up or flat trends (.9 – 1.4 – 1.9 – 1.9, 6+), Hubbard’s WYGY “97.3 The Wolf” falters by six-tenths to 1.3, skidding from #17 to #19 (6+). Returning one-half share of July’s +.8 (5.2 – 4.7, 6+), Radio One urban contemporary WIZF “101.1 The Wiz” segues from sixth to seventh.

9) Orlando – Not only does WDBO-FM all but wipe out the -1.0 that resulted in three straight negative trends (4.2 – 3.8 – 3.6 – 3.2, 6+) with a +.9 (to 4.1, 6+), the Cox Media Group news/talker enters the top ten (#12 to #10). Unchanged at #5, CBS Radio classic hits-oldies WOCL “Sunny 105.9” dials up a +.8 to 6.8, its strongest 6+-stat since 7.0 in November 2015. Carrying on in sixth-place, iHeartMedia-owned WJRR “Orlando’s Rock Station” extends to five its consecutive string of increases accounting for a +2.2 (3.7 – 4.2 – 4.7 – 5.5 – 5.6 – 5.9, 6+). It previously showed a (6+) December 2016 – March 2017 line of 3.9 – 3.7 – 3.7 – 3.9 – 3.7. Picking up six-tenths each are Cox Media Group country outlet WWKA “K-92.3” (4.0, flat at #11, 6+) and Community Communications’ news/talk WMFE (3.0, #14 to #13, 6+). In four straight negative trends (5.0 – 4.7 – 4.4 – 4.1 – 3.4, 6+), “K-92.3 was a collective -1.6; WMFE had been within 2.0 – 2.9 range the past 34 ratings periods. Flat at 10.7 (6+) – after plummeting two full-shares in July – iHeartMedia’s WRUM “Rumba 100” is #1 for the eighth consecutive month. The 12.8 it registered in April was the best-ever 6+-share in its PPM-history. Prior to January, “Rumba” was on top in October, November, and December. Co-owned CHR WXXL “XL-106.7” (flat at #4) is -2.4 in four three straight dips (9.9 – 8.8 – 8.1 – 7.8 – 7.5, 6+), following a +2.7 via four consecutive progressive trends (7.2 – 8.0 – 9.0 – 9.7 – 9.9, 6+). April’s 9.9 was its strongest 6+-share since September’s 10.4. Meanwhile, as the result of six consecutive decreases, FM news/talk sibling WTKS has lost more than two full-shares of its 6+-share (3.6 – 3.3 – 2.9 – 2.2 – 2.0 – 1.8 – 1.5, 6+) and drifts from #15 to #17. Trending 4.2 – 4.4 – 4.2 (May – June – July, 6+), Cox Media Group rhythmic CHR WPYO “Power 95.3” spirals by one full-share to 3.2 and departs the top ten (#9 to #12, 6+). Co-owned urban AC WCFB “Star 94.5” is off by a collective -1.1 in back-to-back sweeps (6.1 – 5.6 – 5.0, sixth to eighth, 6+). In June, “Star” bounced back from May’s -.9 with an increase of six-tenths.

10) Cleveland – A cumulative -1.4 in three successive declines (6.2 – 5.8 – 5.1 – 4.8, 6+), iHeartMedia-owned WMMS “100.7 – Cleveland’s Rock Station” reduces the deficit by roughly one-third with a gain of one-half share and enters the top ten (5.3, #11 to #10, 6+). Unchanged at #15, its alternative HD2 channel picks up one-tenth (to 1.0, 6+), thus curtailing ten straight down or flat trends that began last October and accounted for a net loss of just four-tenths (1.3 – 1.3 – 1.3 – 1.3 – 1.2 – 1.1 – 1.0 – 1.0 – 1.0 – .9 – .9, 6+). It is tied at #15 with Moody Bible Institute’s WCRF “Moody Radio Cleveland” (up from #16 in July), which improves by three-tenths to 1.0 (6+), halting five straight sweeps without an increase for an overall -1.6 (2.3 – 1.9 – 1.2 – 1.2 – .9 – .7, 6+). In addition to “100.7 – Cleveland’s Rock Station,” Radio One urban AC WZAK notches a gain of one-half share (7.6 – 8.1, 6+) and jumps from fourth to second. A combined +1.3 via five straight up or flat trends (5.3 – 5.4 – 5.8 – 6.4 – 6.6 – 6.6, 6+), urban contemporary cluster-mate WENZ “Z-107.9” climbs from seventh to sixth. Although down three-tenths to 8.9 (6+), WMJI “Majic 105.7 Cleveland’s Greatest Hits” repeats at #1. The iHeartMedia classic hits-oldies outlet was +1.1 in July to progress from second to first; July’s 9.1 was its strongest 6+-share since 9.8 in “Holiday” 2016. WMJI occupied the top spot from January through April and in the runner-up slot May and June. Off seven-tenths in three consecutive decreases (7.3 – 7.1 – 6.9 – 6.6, 6+), cluster-mate WGAR “99.5 Cleveland’s Country” pulls the plug with a +.2 to 6.8 and advances from seventh to fifth (6+). The last seven (6+) trends for co-owned adult hits WHLK “106.5 The Lake – We Play Anything” (unchanged at #3) are 7.3 – 7.6 – 7.5 – 7.5 – 7.6 – 7.7 – 7.6. Exploding by +1.1 in July to 7.0, its finest 6+-showing since December 2013’s 7.1, CBS Radio hot AC WQAL “Q-104” relinquishes roughly half of that increase (6.4, -.6, 6+) and falls from fifth to eighth. Prior to July, “Q-104” was trending 5.9 – 6.0 – 5.9 (6+). Owing to four negative trends in succession (3.4 – 3.1 – 2.9 – 2.5 – 2.1, 6+), Ideastream news/talk WCPN (flat at #13) is a collective -1.3.

11) Kansas City – By registering its fifth consecutive up or flat trend, Entercom’s KCSP has nearly quadrupled its 6+-share (1.2 – 2.7 – 2.7 – 3.1 – 3.7 – 4.4, 6+) and moreover, “610 Sports Radio” cracks the top ten (#13 to #9) with its highest 6+-share since June 2016’s 4.7. Improving by seven-tenths as well is country sibling WDAF “106.5 The Wolf” (4.1 – 4.8, 6+), which catapults from #12 to #5. This is the highest 6+-share for “The Wolf” since 4.9 in April 2015. With a +.6 to 4.0 (#15 to #11, 6+), co-owned news/talk KMBZ-FM recaptures two-thirds of the collective nine-tenths it lost in the last two sweeps (4.3 – 3.8 – 3.4, 6+). In a similar vein, University of Northwestern St. Paul contemporary Christian KJNW “Life 88.5” gains one-half share to 2.8 (steady at #17, 6+), erasing all but one-tenth of May-June-July’s -.6 (2.9 – 2.7 – 2.3, 6+). Unchanged at #16, Cumulus Media-owned KCJK “X-105.1 Kansas City’s Alternative” is up or flat for the seventh straight time for an overall gain of +1.0 (1.9 – 2.3 – 2.5 – 2.5 – 2.5 – 2.5 – 2.6 – 2.9, 6+). Having eroded by two full-shares as the result of six straight down or flat trends (3.9 – 3.9 – 3.7 – 3.1 – 3.0 – 2.2 – 1.9, 6+), University of Missouri-owned news/talk KCUR adds two-tenths (to 2.1, 6+) and stays at #18. Owing to four straight (modest) increases (5.6 – 5.7 – 5.9 – 6.0 – 6.1, 6+), Steel City Media’s KFKF “Country 94.1” nets one-half share and carries on in third-place, while co-owned, similarly-programmed KBEQ “Q-104 #1 for New Country” (#14 to #15) is without an increase for the fourth successive sweep for a -1.3 (4.7 – 4.4 – 3.5 – 3.5 – 3.4, 6+). Notwithstanding it has the largest (6+) July 2016 – August 2017 erosion by any station in the 12 PPM-markets listed here (10.3 – 8.7, -1.6, 6+), Cumulus Media classic rocker KCFX “The Fox” is #1 for the eighth consecutive time. The decrease draws to a close five straight increases that accounted for a cumulative +2.8 (7.5 – 8.5 – 8.7 – 9.4 – 10.3, 6+). By reaching 10.3 in July, it marked only the fifth time a Kansas City station has registered double-digits (6+) in the PPM era. “The Fox” bounced back from a -.8 in March with a full-share gain in April. Before that, it recorded three consecutive declines accounting for a -1.5 (9.0 – 8.5 – 8.3 – 7.5, 6+). Another positive streak ends in dramatic fashion as well with co-owned urban AC KMJK spiraling by -1.1 to 3.7, curtailing four consecutive sweeps without a loss for a +1.0 (3.8 – 3.9 – 4.7 – 4.7 – 4.8, 6+); “Magic 107.3 Kansas City’s Best Mix of R&B” freefalls from #6 to #14, (6+). Despite being off six-tenths to 4.8 – its lowest 6+-share since January’s 4.7 – Carter Broadcasting urban contemporary KPRS “Hot 103 Jamz” continues in fifth-place. 12) Columbus – Progressing from eighth to sixth, Ohio State University news/talk WOSU-FM is up an astonishing combined +1.9 in four straight up or flat trends (2.8 – 3.0 – 3.0 – 3.5 – 4.7, 6+). Rebounding from July’s loss of seven-tenths, Radiohio-owned WBNS-FM trots out a gain of nine-tenths (1.9 – 2.8, 6+) as “Sports Radio 97.1 The Fan” climbs from #14 to #12. “The Fan” ended its (6+) February through May sequence of 3.9 – 4.2 – 3.9 – 4.1 by slumping -1.5 in June to 2.6 (6+). Gaining three-tenths to 3.5 (6+), iHeartMedia urban contemporary WZCB “106.7 The Beat – Columbus Real Hip-Hop and R&B” (steady at #9) manages to apply the brakes to four consecutive down or flat monthlies that accounted for a -1.3 (4.5 – 4.2 – 3.8 – 3.8 – 3.2, 6+). Even though it falters by nine-tenths to 11.8 (6+), country cluster-mate WCOL repeats at #1. In just two back-to-back ratings periods (June and July), WCOL produced a whopping +3.5 (9.2 – 10.6 – 12.7, 6+). July’s 12.7 was the highest 6+-share by any Columbus station since WCOL reached 12.9 in July 2015. It was +2.2 in January; -1.2 in February; +.8 in March; -1.3 in May; +1.4 in June; +2.1 in July; and now -.9 in August (10.5 – 9.3 – 10.1 – 10.5 – 9.2 – 10.6 – 12.7 – 10.8, 6+). UPDATED: WFAN, New York’s Craig Carton Arrested on Fraud Charges; Allegedly Operated Ponzi Scheme to Pay Gambling Debts.  The New York Post is reporting that WFAN, New York morning drive personality Craig Carton was arrested early this morning (9/6) by the FBI on charges of fraud.  According to the complaint, federal authorities say Carton and business partner Joseph Meli bilked two investors out of $3.6 million, while Carton alone got another $2 million out of the same two investors.  The feds say the two set up a Ponzi scheme related to investments in a concert ticket resale agency that didn’t exist.  The complaint goes on to say that Carton forged documents to fool investors into believing they had a deal to get concert tickets at cost.  Court papers go on to say Carton’s motive was to pay off millions of dollars’ worth of gambling debts he’d accrued.  Carton co-hosts the “Boomer and Carton” show on WFAN, New York.  Additionally, Bloomberg is reporting that Meli was first investigated in January by authorities for an investment scam involving tickets to the hit Broadway musical Hamilton.  The investigation then expanded, leading to this morning’s arrest of Carton.  Wealthy investors in the Hamilton case reportedly included Dell Computers founder Michael Dell and Paul Tudor Jones. Station owner CBS RADIO has stated only that it’s “aware of the situation” and is cooperating with authorities.  Read the Post story here. Check out the Bloomberg piece here.

Weisman: Carton Could Face Stiff SentenceTALKERS magazine legal editor Steven J.J. Weisman writes today about the case of WFAN, New York morning personality Craig Carton’s arrest on charges of fraud.  As noted in the story above, Carton and co-conspirators allegedly concocted a Ponzi-like scheme in order to, in Carton’s case, pay off large gambling debts.  Weisman says that Carton also faces civil securities fraud charges.  Read more here.

Alpha Media Sells 20 Stations to Dick Broadcasting.  This deal involves three markets – Greenville/New Bern, North Carolina; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and Savannah/Hilton Head.  We don’t know the price Alpha Media is getting from Dick Broadcasting for the 20 stations at this point. Alpha Media chairman Larry Wilson says, “I’ve known [Dick Broadcasting owner and CEO] Allen Dick for many, many years and am thrilled to assist him in growing his company with the sale of these three great markets.  My vision of this industry aligns with Allen’s, which makes me confident these stations and talented employees are in great hands.”  Spoken-word stations involved in the deal include sports talk WRNS, Kinston, North Carolina and news/talk WRNN-FM, Myrtle Beach.

Cooke: Report from the RAIN Summit.  Media consultant Holland Cooke reports from Austin where broadcasters are gathering for the NAB/RAB Radio Show and yesterday’s RAIN Summit.  There, RAIN chief Kurt Hanson delivered his state-of-the-industry address.  There’s a lot of focus on the smart speaker trend and what the technology can mean for radio broadcasters.  Edison Research president Larry Rosen said his research shows people are passionate about their smart speaker, “65% of users surveyed say they ‘wouldn’t want to go back to life before they owned one.’”  When asked how they listen to audio most often, the top three responses were: “smartphone/tablet – 28%, AM/FM radio – 20%, and smart speaker – 18%.”  Read more from Cooke’s report here.

Houston Radio Stations Band Together for Harvey Relief.  Houston-area radio stations from six radio companies – CBS RADIO, iHeartMedia, Cox Media Group, Cumulus Media, Radio One, and Univision – are working together to raise funds for the Houston Food Bank.  Twenty-five Houston stations will air pre-recorded and live announcements requesting donations to the food bank Friday, September 8 through Sunday, September 10.  Texas Association of Broadcasters president Oscar Rodriguez says, “Radio’s strength is rooted in its connection to the community and Houstonians rely on radio to inform, protect and nourish their spirits.  Now, Houston radio stations come together to literally nourish those harmed by Hurricane Harvey.  So starts Houston’s recovery, with the power of its people – and radio – behind it.”

FOX Sports Radio Unveils Revised Weekend Schedule; Announces Addition of Rob Ryan to Sunday Afternoon Show.  Veteran NFL coach Rob Ryan is joining FOX Sports Radio to co-host the Sunday 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm ET show this fall.  Ryan is partnered with FSR personality Mark Willard for the show that debuts on Sunday (9/10).  Ryan says, “I’m looking forward to telling the audience the real story behind the games and providing insights that have been garnered from years of experience.  I’m really excited to join this awesome FSR team and looking forward to some great Sunday afternoons.”  Other former NFL players serving with the network this fall include: three-time Pro Bowler Lincoln Kennedy (Saturdays 6 am to 10 am ET), Super Bowl champion Brady Poppinga (Saturdays 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm), 13-year NFL veteran and NFC champion Ephraim Salaam (Sundays 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm) and former Notre Dame quarterback and first round draft pick Brady Quinn (Sundays 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm).

The service allows programming and advertising content on radio stations across America to be recognized by the Shazam app, launching rich, interactive experiences in real time on listeners’ mobile devices…..ESPN Radio’s Ryen Russillo returned to the network’s air yesterday (9/5) and was honest and contrite about his arrest on criminal trespassing that happened in Wyoming while he was on vacation.  As you recall, Russillo was arrested after entering the wrong condominium while drunk and passing out in a state of undress in the unit.  He apologized to ESPN and to his listeners for his behavior.  Russillo was suspended for two weeks for the incident.

Michael Berry Is This Week’s Guest on Harrison Podcast.  One of the most interesting and provocative individuals on talk radio today, Michael Berry of KTRH, Houston, is this week’s guest on the award-winning PodcastOne series, “Up Close and Far Out with Michael Harrison,” as Texas’ largest city remains in the spotlight of our nation’s concerns.  Harrison and Berry discuss the talk show host’s personal and terrifying experience during the devastation of the storm.  He was in Louisiana on business when he got word that his wife and two young sons had to be rescued from the flood in a boat.  Berry talks about his efforts to get back to them in the chaos of closed roads and flooded routes.  Fortunately, the family was eventually safely reunited but the feelings and lessons learned will last a lifetime.  The conversation, however, does not stop there.  Berry – whose edgy satire often makes him the target of accusations of being a racist – is actually the opposite of a racist.  He is married to an Indian woman and the couple has two black, adopted sons from Ethiopia.  Berry candidly discusses his fascinating family life and personal views on matters of race and integration.  Emerging as a talk media figure to be taken quite seriously, he does two shows per day on the iHeartMedia Houston powerhouse in addition to being independently syndicated on a network of 20-plus stations.  He is a high-ranking member of the TALKERS Heavy Hundred.  He is this past year’s recipient of iHeartMedia’s in-house Talk Show Host of the Year award.  Though he portrays himself with somewhat of a redneck persona, Berry has impressive academic legal credentials and is a long-time, well-known figure in Houston where he once served as a member of the city council and as Mayor Pro Tem. Madison classic rocker WIBA-FM names market pro John “Sly” Sylvester afternoon drive personality.  Station PD Van Edwards states, “We’re thrilled to bring Sly back to the place his amazing career began.  101.5 WIBA-FM is clearly the perfect place for Sly.  It always has been and always will be.”…..Adams Radio debuts a new rock station in the Fort Wayne market branded “103.3 The Fort.”  It airs on translator W277AK and is fed by the HD2 channel of WJFX-FM.  This is a format flip from talk as “The Patriot.”  The lineup includes the syndicated Billy Madison show and Westwood One’s Seattle-based “The Mens Room” in evenings…..The Tom Joyner Foundation Fantastic Voyage Cruise on the Carnival Breeze sets sail next April 29 – May 6 and will feature entertainers including: Chris Brown, Tamar Braxton, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Isley Brothers, O’Jays and more.  The “party with a purpose” is in its 19th year.  The chartered cruise features a customized seven-day itinerary with concerts, celebrities, inspiration, motivating seminars, and more while raising money to help keep students in school at Historically Black Colleges and Universities…..Entercom has announced today the launch of the “I’m Listening” campaign for mental health awareness and suicide prevention.  This campaign includes a two-hour, on-air special that will be broadcast live from Seattle on World Suicide Prevention Day (9/10).  The two-hour, live special will focus on personal stories from artists and celebrities while offering help and resources to listeners via a live call-in option.   The conversation will be led by KISW, Seattle morning personality BJ Shea and will feature guests such as Christine Moutier, M.D., chief medical officer of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Dr. Ursula Whiteside, clinical psychologist, CEO of NowMattersNow.org.  Numerous musicians and celebrities are scheduled to appear on the program.

The first of four rounds of ratings information from Nielsen Audio’s August 2017 PPM survey has been released for 12 markets including: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Nassau-Suffolk (Long Island), Riverside, San Jose, and Middlesex-Somerset-Union (New Jersey). 1) New York – It’s an interesting tradeoff for CBS Radio classic hits-oldies WCBS-FM, which falters by one-half share to 6.1 (6+), thus halting at four a skein of successive up or flat trends that netted a combined seven-tenths (5.9 – 6.1 – 6.1 – 6.2 – 6.6, 6+). In return though, “New York’s Greatest Hits” advances from the runner-up slot to #1, a position it last held in May when it tied iHeartMedia adult contemporary WLTW “Lite FM.” A similar streak comes to an end for the just-mentioned WLTW, as its loss of seven-tenths (6.7 – 6.0, 6+) completely erases three straight gains that yielded that exact margin (6.0 – 6.1 – 6.5 – 6.7, 6+). After finishing at #1 the past three consecutive months, “106.7 Lite FM” drops to #2. A one-tenth increase by “Lite” in May halted four straight declines that produced a collective -7.3 since “Holiday” 2016 (13.3 – 7.2 – 7.1 – 6.2 – 6.0, 6+). Having notched four consecutive sweeps without an increase (4.1 – 4.1 – 4.1 – 4.0 – 3.9, 6+), co-owned rhythmic CHR WKTU (unchanged at #10) adds one-tenth to 4.0 (6+) and bypasses Emmis’ similarly-formatted WQHT “Hot 97 – #1 for Hip-Hop,” which returns the four-tenths it gained in July (4.2 – 3.8, -.4, 6+); “Hot 97” exits the top ten (#8 to #11). Steady at #13, Cumulus Media hot AC WPLJ “New York’s 95.5 PLJ” is up or flat for the fifth successive sweep for a cumulative +.4 (2.4 – 2.4 – 2.4 – 2.5 – 2.6 – 2.8, 6+), while its format rival – CBS Radio’s WNEW-FM “Fresh 102.7” (2.6 – 3.0, +.4, 6+) – climbs from #13 to #12. The two hot AC competitors were tied at 2.6 in July, but “Fresh” had held the advantage over WPLJ in each of the previous seven ratings periods. Frozen at 4.2 (6+) in June, July, and August and steady at #8, iHeartMedia urban contemporary WWPR “Power 105.1 New York’s Hip-Hop and R&B” is without a decrease for the seventh successive sweep and is up six-tenths in that stretch (3.6 – 3.6 – 3.6 – 3.7 – 3.8 – 4.2 – 4.2 – 4.2, 6+). Down or flat for the seventh straight time but for a net loss of only two-tenths (1.4 – 1.4 – 1.4 – 1.3 – 1.3 – 1.3 – 1.2 – 1.2, 6+), Cumulus Media news/talk WABC manages to climb from #22 to #21. In the market’s all-news race, CBS Radio’s WINS is up two-tenths to 4.9 (sixth to fifth, 6+), curtailing four straight dips that resulted in a collective -1.1 (5.8 – 5.3 – 5.1 – 4.8 – 4.7, 6+), while co-owned WCBS-AM – which was 2.4 (6+) in April and May and 2.7 (6+) in June and July – is off one-tenth in August to 2.6 (#12 to #14, 6+). Three full-shares separate Gotham’s two major CHRs: iHeartMedia-owned WHTZ “Z-100” has its third up or flat month (4.6 – 4.7 – 4.9 – 4.9, unchanged at #5, 6+) while CBS Radio’s WBMP “92.3 Amp” is steady at #19, but hasn’t had an increase since April for a collective loss of four-tenths (2.3 – 2.3 – 2.0 – 2.0 – 1.9, 6+).

2) Los Angeles – Having occupied the runner-up position in each of the past five sweeps and trending a very consistent 5.5 – 5.5 – 5.3 – 5.4 – 5.3 (March to July, 6+), CBS Radio smooth AC KTWV “The Wave” leaps six-tenths to 5.9 (6+) and maintains its #2 ranking. One-half share ahead of “The Wave” is iHeartMedia hot AC KBIG “My-FM,” which duplicates July’s +.3 (5.8 – 6.1 – 6.4, 6+) and is #1 for the seventh straight ratings period. “My-FM” was stuck on 5.8 (6+) in May and June. When KBIG dropped one-tenth in April, it ended three straight uptrends, which netted a combined full-share gain (4.7 – 5.1 – 5.2 – 5.7, 6+). February’s +.1 (5.1 – 5.2, 6+) was enough for it to depart the runner-up slot it held the previous three sweeps and take over at #1. Without a decrease for a remarkable eighth consecutive monthly for an overall gain of nine-tenths in that period (1.8 – 2.0 – 2.1 – 2.1 – 2.2 – 2.2 – 2.4 – 2.5 – 2.7, 6+), CBS Radio-owned alternative KROQ moves from #17 to a three-way logjam at #12 and has its strongest 6+-showing since June 2016’s 2.9. In the process, it leapfrogs iHeartMedia’s similarly-programmed KYSR-FM, which is down or flat for the sixth time in a row for a collective loss of six-tenths (3.2 – 3.1 – 3.0 – 2.9 – 2.9 – 2.7 – 2.6, 6+) but “Alt 98.7 – LA’s New Alternative” remains at #15. Consequently, the 1.5-share (6+) advantage KYSR held over KROQ in December is now a one-tenth lead for KROQ. A gain of one-half share (1.4 – 1.9, 6+) takes Pasadena City College news/talk KPCC “89.3 The Voice of Southern California” (#22) to the best 6+-showing for the American Public Media Group-operated facility since February’s 2.1. Meanwhile, the January through August trending for iHeartMedia news/talk KFI (unchanged at #7) is 3.5 – 3.5 – 3.4 – 3.5 – 3.5 – 3.3 – 3.4 – 3.5 (6+). Co-owned, similarly-formatted KEIB’s March through August line is 1.0 – .9 – .9 – .8 – .8 – .8 (6+). Down or flat the past five sweeps for a loss of nine-tenths (3.8 – 3.6 – 3.4 – 3.4 – 3.3 – 2.9, 6+), CBS Radio all-news KNX returns to the top ten with a gain of one-tenth (3.0, #11 to #9). Starting at that #9 position, 13 Los Angeles stations are separated by just eight-tenths of a share. Within those rankers, there are ties at #10 (2.9, 6+); #12 (three at 2.7, 6+); #15 (2.6, 6+); #18 (2.4, 6+); and #20 (2.2, 6+). Off two-tenths to 2.7 (6+) and falling from #11 to #12, Spanish Broadcasting System Spanish contemporary KXOL “Mega 96.3 – LA’s #1 Party Station” halts at five its successive string of uptrends that netted nine-tenths (2.0 – 2.1 – 2.3 – 2.4 – 2.5 – 2.9, 6+). In a similar vein, regional Mexican cluster-mate KLAX drops two-tenths as well (to 2.5, #15 to #17, 6+) to end three straight increases yielding a +1.1 (1.6 – 1.8 – 1.9 – 2.7, 6+). July’s 2.7 was the strongest 6+-share for “97.9 La Raza” since February 2016’s 2.9. Continuing the theme that has LA stations dropping two-tenths to end winning streaks is Meruelo Media Holdings rhythmic CHR KPWR (2.9, -.2, ninth to tenth, 6+) – “Power 106” had been up a collective half-share in four successive up or flat trends (2.6 – 2.6 – 2.9 – 2.9 – 3.1, 6+). Tied with KPWR at #10 is CBS Radio CHR KAMP “Amp,” which – until a -.1 in August to 2.9 (6+) – hadn’t had a decrease in the previous five sweeps for a collective gain of six-tenths (2.4 – 2.6 – 2.6 – 2.7 – 3.0 – 3.0, 6+). Format foe – iHeartMedia’s KIIS “102.7 Kiss FM” is locked at both 4.7 and #4 (6+). On one hand, Mount Wilson FM Broadcasters’ KKGO is down one-tenth to 2.7 (6+), snapping at five its string of successive ratings periods without erosion which netted six-tenths since January (2.2 – 2.5 – 2.5 – 2.7 – 2.8 – 2.8 – 2.8, 6+), but from a ranker standpoint, “Go Country 105” progresses from #13 to a three-way tie at #12. Conversely, Taxi Productions urban AC KJLH picks up one-tenth to 1.5 (6+), ending six straight decreases that resulted in a collective -.9 (2.3 – 2.1 – 1.8 – 1.7 – 1.6 – 1.5 – 1.4, 6+), but “Radio Free 102.3” backslides from #24 to #25.

3) Chicago – Following four straight months of being down or flat for a net loss of one-half share (3.2 – 3.0 – 2.9- 2.7 – 2.7, 6+), WSHE not only regains all of it (3.2, 6+), the Hubbard adult contemporary facility rockets from #18 to #10. Logging a 2.7 (6+) in three of the past five ratings periods, (somewhat) similarly-programmed WRME-LP slips by one-tenth to 2.6 (6+), yet moves from a tie at #18 (with WSHE) to a four-way deadlock at #17. In addition to recording its fifth straight up or flat trend for a collective +1.6 (2.6 – 2.6 – 2.9 – 3.4 – 4.1 – 4.2, 6+), CBS Radio-owned WUSN has its best 6+-showing since October 2014’s 4.4 as “US-99 Chicago’s Hottest Country” advances from fifth to fourth. Its format rival – iHeartMedia’s WEBG – was trending 2.2 – 2.2 – 2.2 – 2.3 – 2.1 – 2.1 (January 2017 – June 2017, 6+) before jumping to July’s 2.8 (6+). Regressing by six-tenths to 2.2, however, “Big 95.5 Chicago’s New Country” freefalls from #14 to #21. While it is on top for the seventh successive month, urban AC cluster-mate WVAZ “V-103 Today’s R&B and Throwbacks” falters by seven-tenths to 6.0 (6+), curtailing four consecutive up or flat trends for a +1.1 (5.6 – 5.6 – 5.8 – 6.1 – 6.7, 6+). Steady at #3, WBBM-AM picks up the three-tenths it lost in July (4.7, 6+) to end at six a successive string of sweeps without an increase for a collective -1.9 (6.3 – 5.4 – 5.4 – 4.9 – 4.8 – 4.7 – 4.4, 6+). The CBS Radio all-news operation had been in the runner-up slot from February through June before slipping to third in July. Included in a four-way logjam at #17 (up from #20 in July) is iHeartMedia-owned hot AC WLIT, which adds two-tenths to 2.6 (6+); “93.9 My-FM The Best Variety” had been -1.3 as a result of four successive declines (3.7 – 3.4 – 3.0 – 2.8 – 2.4, 6+). Holding a nearly two-to-one edge over “My-FM” and repeating at #2 is Hubbard’s similarly-formatted WTMX “101.9 The Mix” (4.6 – 5.0, +.4, 6+), which picked up one-tenth in July to snap at five a consecutive string of sweeps without an increase that accounted for a loss of seven-tenths (5.3 – 4.9 – 4.8 – 4.8 – 4.6 – 4.6, 6+). Dropping from fourth to sixth, co-owned WDRV “97.1 The Drive – Chicago’s Classic Rock” is off by two-tenths to 4.0 (6+), halting at five its consecutive streak of up or flat trends which netted eight-tenths since February (3.4 – 3.4 – 3.5 – 3.6 – 3.9 – 4.2, 6+). After it had gained two-tenths in each of the last four ratings periods (2.6 – 2.8 – 3.0 – 3.2 – 3.4, 6+), iHeartMedia urban contemporary WGCI-FM “Chicago’s #1 for Hip-Hop and R&B” surrenders three-tenths to 3.1 (6+) and exits the top ten (#10 to #11). Having posted three consecutive sweeps without a loss for an overall one-half share gain (3.7 – 4.0 – 4.2 – 4.2, 6+), Tribune Media Company news/talk WGN (#14 to #15) is now down or flat for the sixth straight ratings period for a collective -1.4 (4.2 – 4.2 – 3.9 – 3.3 – 3.1 – 2.8 – 2.8, 6+). Trending 1.4 – 1.5 – 1.6, April – May – June (6+), Window to the World classical WFMT is unlisted for the second straight month.

4) San Francisco – The last time KSFO registered an increase was in January and in six subsequent sweeps this calendar year, it is a collective -1.1 (2.8 – 2.8 – 2.6 – 2.3 – 2.1 – 1.8 – 1.7, 6+). The Cumulus Media news/talk outlet though makes up roughly half of that loss with a gain of six-tenths to 2.3 (6+) and it cracks the top twenty (#18). For the eighth straight time, classic rock sibling KSAN “107.7 The Bone” (#14 to #13) is without a decrease (2.1 – 2.1 – 2.1 – 2.1 – 2.3 – 2.5 – 2.5 – 2.6 – 2.7, 6+) and is up six-tenths in that stretch. Adding one-half share (7.1 – 7.6, 6+), Northern California Public Broadcasting’s KQED-FM is on top in San Francisco for the eighth successive time. A gain of four-tenths in July halted at four a successive streak without an increase that produced a -1.0 (7.7 – 7.3 – 7.0 – 6.7 – 6.7, 6+). In each of the eight sweeps that KQED-FM has finished first, the runner-up is CBS Radio-owned all-news KCBS-AM, which is down or flat for the fourth straight time (6.3 – 6.1 – 6.0 – 5.8 – 5.8, 6+). There is no (6+) AQH-share movement between the market’s two contemporary hit music facilities, as CBS Radio’s KMVQ “99.7 – New Hit Music Now” is flat at 3.5 (6+) and iHeartMedia’s KYLD “Wild 94.9 – The Bay’s #1 Hit Music Station” remains at 3.4 (6+), but KMVQ moves from seventh to sixth and KYLD advances from eighth to seventh. Frozen on 3.8 (6+) in February and March and then on 3.2 (6+) in April and May, KMVQ slipped to 3.0 in June but bounced back with a one-half share gain in July. In the Bay Area’s adult contemporary arena, iHeartMedia-owned KISQ “98.1 The Breeze” improves by four-tenths (4.1 – 4.5, fourth to third, 6+), while Entercom’s KOIT-FM “96.5 Better Music for a Better Workday” is off for the fourth consecutive time for an overall loss of -1.1 (5.5 – 5.3 – 5.0 – 4.8 – 4.4, third to fourth, 6+). Thus, KOIT-FM’s seven-tenths advantage in July has been changed to a one-tenth lead for KISQ. A collective +.8 in June and July (2.5 – 2.7 – 3.3, 6+), Entercom urban AC KBLX “102.9 The Bay’s R&B” forfeits 75% of that gain in August (2.7, -.6, 6+) to drift from #9 to #13. Prior to July, the last time KBLX reached the three-share level (6+) was in April 2016 with a 3.0. As the result of three straight decreases, CBS Radio-owned hot AC KLLC is off by one-full-share (4.2 – 3.9 – 3.7 – 3.2, 6+) and “Alice @ 97.3” slides from sixth to eighth. Even though Cumulus Media-owned San Francisco Giants flagship KNBR is down or flat for the fourth time in a row for a cumulative -1.0 (4.2 – 4.1 – 3.5 – 3.2 – 3.2, 6+), “The Sports Leader” actually moves from tenth to eighth. Meanwhile, the key station of the Oakland A’s – Entercom’s KGMZ “95.7 The Game” – is steady at 1.1 (6+) after July’s -1.0 and carries on at #25. May’s +.3 by “The Game” put an end to its 1.7 – 1.8 – 1.7 – 1.8 – 1.7 (6+) trending. The significantly consistent October 2016 through August 2017 6+-line for iHeartMedia urban contemporary KMEL “#1 for Hip-Hop and R&B in the Bay Area” is 3.3 – 3.0 – 2.9 – 3.3 – 3.1 – 3.0 – 3.0 – 3.1 – 3.0 – 2.9 – 3.0 – 2.9 (flat at #12). This is the fifth straight month that Entercom-owned KUFX “98.5 K-Fox – The South Bay’s Classic Rock” is unlisted in San Francisco, but it still appears in print in San Jose (see below). The station’s March 2017 6+-San Francisco stat was 1.5.

5) Dallas – With a 3.8 (6+) in three of the last five sweeps, iHeartMedia hot AC KDMX “102.9 Now” erupts with a +.8 (3.7 – 4.5, eighth to sixth, 6+). It is the best 6+-stat for Dallas’ version of “Now” since February 2016 (4.5, as well). Trending 4.6 – 4.3 – 4.6 (May – June – July, 6+), CBS Radio classic hits-oldies KLUV “98.7 K-LUV” picks up one-half share to 5.1 (6+), progressing from fourth to third. Ending a mini-slide (6.3 – 6.1 – 5.6, 6+), Cumulus Media country outlet KPLX picks up two-tenths to 5.8 (6+) and is #1 for the eighth successive time. July’s 5.6 was the lowest 6+-share for “The Wolf” since the “Holiday” 2016 report’s 4.7. A collective -1.6 since January as the result of six straight down or flat trends (3.6 – 3.3 – 2.9 – 2.6 – 2.3 – 2.0 – 2.0, 6+), news/talk cluster-mate WBAP is up two-tenths to 2.2 (6+) to move from #24 to #21. While it backslides from #11 to #12, Univision Radio Spanish contemporary KDXX “Latino Mix” notches its sixth consecutive up or flat trend for a +1.1 (1.9 – 2.0 – 2.4 – 2.6 – 2.6 – 3.0 – 3.0, 6+). With a full-share gain in July, CBS Radio adult hits KJKK pulled the plug on three straight negative trends that yielded a loss of eight-tenths (3.9 – 3.5 – 3.2 – 3.1, 6+), but “100.3 Jack-FM” winds up returning one-half share (4.1 – 3.6, sixth to eighth, 6+). July’s 4.1 was the strongest 6+-performance for Dallas’ rendition of “Jack” since last December’s 4.2. Displaying an identical sixth to eighth (6+) July – August profile as KJKK is Univision Radio regional Mexican KLNO “Que Buena 94.1,” which is a collective -1.0 in three straight down or flat trends (4.5 – 4.1 – 4.1 – 3.6, 6+). In addition to “Jack” and “Que Buena,” iHeartMedia classic rock and adult contemporary siblings KZPS “Lone Star 92.5” (third to fourth, 6+) and KDGE “Star 102.1 More Music, More Variety” (#2.9 – 2.4, #15 to #19, 6+) regress by one-half share as well. After four straight increases that netted nine-tenths (4.6 – 4.7 – 5.0 – 5.2 – 5.5, 6+), “Lone Star 92.5” is without an increase for the third straight time (5.5 – 5.4 – 5.4 – 4.9, 6+) for an overall loss of six-tenths. From the first of the year through August 2017, the 6+-line for Radio One rhythmic CHR KBFB “97.9 The Beat” (#16 to #17) is 2.8 – 2.9 – 2.9 – 2.7 – 2.8 – 2.7 – 2.7 – 2.5.

6) Houston – As noted above, the August 2017 survey period covered July 20 – August 16, several weeks prior to the impact of Hurricane Harvey in Houston. Results of this market’s September 2017 sweep should, of course, be especially noteworthy. Debuting directly into the top twenty with a 1.1 (#20, 6+) is the regional Mexican HD2 channel of iHeartMedia’s KTBZ. A collective +1.7 via four straight up or flat monthlies (5.5 – 5.5 – 5.8 – 6.4 – 7.2, 6+), co-owned adult contemporary KODA “Sunny 99.1” marches from third to first. This is the strongest 6+-stat for “Sunny” since “Holiday” 2016 (10.3). Between March and June, KODA had a 6+-pattern of 5.8 – 5.5 – 5.5 – 5.8. Even though it gains one-tenth (7.0 – 7.1, 6+), Radio One-owned urban AC KMJQ “Majic 102.1 The People’s Station” segues to #2, after six consecutive months at #1. Its previous three trends were +1.4 (May); -.6 (June); and -.7 (July). Up a combined +1.0 in back-to-back monthlies (6.9 – 7.2 – 7.9, January-February-March, 6+), “Majic” returned all of it in April (6.9, 6+) before notching May’s +1.4. Wiping out in its entirety July’s -.7, Univision Radio regional Mexican KLTN (5.0 – 4.3 – 5.0, 6+) proceeds from seventh to fourth. Following three straight negative trends that yielded a combined -1.5 (8.0 – 7.4 – 6.7 – 6.5, 6+), KLTN brought back 60% of that deficit in January (+.9), jumping from third to first. It was a very quick stay there though as KLTN surrendered -1.3 in February (7.4 – 6.1, 6+) and dropped to third.  It was -.5 in March; +.7 in April; -.2 in May; -1.1 in June; -.7 in July; and now +.7 in August. The last time KLTN fell below a five-share (6+) was March 2016 (4.9). It is a yo-yo effect as well for CBS Radio hot AC KHMX with an emphasis on six-tenths, as “Houston’s Mix 96-5,” was +.6 in June; -.6 in July; and now +.6 in August (3.2 – 3.8 – 3.2 – 3.8, #15 to #12, 6+). Following four straight gains that yielded a cumulative +1.3 (2.3 – 2.5 – 2.7 – 3.1 – 3.6, 6+), “Mix” lost four-tenths in May. Rebounding from July’s loss of four-tenths with a one-half share gain (2.7 – 3.2, 6+), University of Houston news/talk KUHF climbs from #17 to #15. Without a decrease since February and +1.2 in that timeframe (5.3 – 5.7 – 5.9 – 6.2 – 6.5 – 6.5, 6+), Cox Media Group classic rock KGLK “The Eagle” forfeits all but one-tenth of that increase (6.5 – 5.4, -1.1, 6+) and slips from second to third. Four straight up or flat trends by Cumulus Media CHR KRBE produced a +1.1 (3.7 – 3.8 – 3.8 – 4.6 – 4.8, 6+), but “Houston’s #1 Hit Music Station” is off by four-tenths to 4.4 (6+) and slips from fifth to seventh.

7) Atlanta – With a whopping gain of +1.2 to 4.3 (6+), WABE “90.1 Atlanta’s NPR Station” not only puts an end to its up/down pattern that it began last October (3.5 – 2.9 – 3.2 – 2.9 – 3.3 – 3.0 – 3.8 – 2.9 – 3.0 – 2.6 – 3.1, 6+), the City of Atlanta Board of Education news/talk outlet leaps from #16 to #9. Off six-tenths in three straight sweeps without an increase (4.3 – 4.0 – 3.7 – 3.7, 6+), Radio One gospel WPZE “Praise 102.5 – Atlanta’s Inspiration Station” answers with a +.8 to 4.5 (6+), vaulting into the top ten (#14 to #8). Five consecutive positive trends by Entercom hot AC WSTR “Star 94.1 – Today’s Best Mix” (steady at #13) have generated a spike of nine-tenths (3.0 – 3.1 – 3.3 – 3.7 – 3.8 – 3.9, 6+). In addition to picking up four-tenths to 4.3 (6+), Salem Media Group contemporary Christian WFSH halts four straight down or flat trends (5.4 – 5.0 – 4.5 – 3.9 – 3.9, 6+) that resulted in a combined -1.5 and “The Fish” swims back into the top ten (#12 to #9). As Cox Media Group’s WALR “Kiss 104.1” is off three-tenths in back-to-back sweeps (6.2 – 5.9 – 5.6, 6+) and remains in third-place, Radio One-owned, similar-formatted WAMJ “Majic – The Real Sound of Atlanta” regains the four-tenths it lost in July (4.8 – 4.4 – 4.8, 6+), jumping from eighth to fifth. Trending 8.6 – 8.8 – 8.6 – 8.9 (6+) since May, Cox Media Group news/talk WSB-AM is #1 for the 20th straight ratings period. Prior to June’s +.2, WSB-AM had been down or flat the previous four sweeps for a combined loss of more than two full-shares (10.7 – 9.9 – 9.5 – 9.5 – 8.6, 6+). January 2017’s 10.7 represents the station’s best-ever (6+) PPM-performance. By surrendering nine-tenths to 3.9 (6+), Cumulus Media’s country-formatted WKHX “Kicks 101.5” fades from #5 to #13. The -.9 stymies three straight increases for “Kicks” that netted a +1.2 (3.6 – 3.9 – 4.1 – 4.8, 6+). Meanwhile, iHeartMedia’s similarly-formatted WUBL “94.9 The Bull,” a collective +1.9 as the result of seven successive upticks (2.6 – 2.8 – 2.9 – 3.4 – 3.6 – 4.0 – 4.2 – 4.5, 6+), drops two-tenths to 4.3 (6+), shifting from seventh to ninth. July’s 4.5 was its best 6+-showing since 4.6 in July 2016. Another streak of seven months comes to an end, as Cumulus Media’s WNNX “100.5 – Atlanta’s Rock Station” dips by four-tenths to 2.9 (#15 to #16, 6+). As was the case with “The Bull,” WNNX was without a loss for the seventh time in a row and was a combined +1.6 since the “Holiday” 2016 report (1.7 – 2.0 – 2.0 – 2.2 – 2.7 – 3.2 – 3.2 – 3.3, 6+). For the second straight month, Cox Media Group’s WSRV “Classic Hits 97.1 The River” sputters by seven-tenths (6.6 – 5.9 – 5.2, 6+), slipping from third to fourth. A loss of one-tenth in June concluded at five its streak of consecutive gains that generated a +2.3 (4.4 – 4.6 – 5.1 – 5.9 – 6.2 – 6.7, 6+). Both of the market’s CHR properties drop by the same margin: Cumulus Media’s WWWQ “Q-100 Atlanta’s New Hits” returns the two-tenths it picked up in July (4.2 – 4.4 – 4.2, #8 to #12, 6+), while iHeartMedia-owned WWPW “Power 96.1 Atlanta’s #1 Hit Music Station” is without an increase for the third straight time (4.3 – 4.1 – 4.1 – 3.9, 6+), sliding from #11 to #13.

8) Philadelphia – Stymied at 3.3 (6+) in May and June, WHYY floundered by eight-tenths in July to 2.5 – its lowest 6+-share since “Holiday” 2016 when it recorded a 2.3. The public news/talk facility bounces back in August though with a full-share spike to 3.5 (#15 to #13, 6+) for its best 6+-showing since January 2016’s 3.7. Off a collective full-share in June and July (5.5 – 4.7 – 4.5, 6+), CBS Radio sports outlet WIP recaptures 80% of that decrease (5.3, +.8, 6+), jumping from eighth to fifth. The 6+-shares for classic hits-oldies cluster-mate WOGL in its three straight months at #1 are 7.2 – 7.5 – 7.4 (6+). It returned to the top spot in June after transitioning from first to third in May. As the result of four straight down or flat trends, Beasley Media Group-owned WMMR is -1.2 (6.0 – 5.7 – 5.3 – 4.8 – 4.8, 6+) but “93.3 Everything That Rocks” actually improves from seventh to sixth. Following five straight months of being either down or flat for an overall loss of four-tenths (1.2 – 1.2 – 1.1 -.9 – .8 – .8, 6+), Connoisseur Media hot AC WPST “94.5 PST” adds one-tenth to .9 (#25 to #24, 6+). This time last month, iHeartMedia urban contemporary WUSL hung out a +1.2 to 5.6, the first time it crossed the five-share level (6+) in nearly three years (5.2, 6+, August 2014). “Power 99,” however, surrenders all of it plus one-tenth more (4.3 – 1.3, 6+), slipping from fifth to eighth. Entering the July ratings period, “Power 99” ranged from a low of 4.0 to a high of 4.4 over ten successive sweeps (4.1 – 4.0 – 4.0 – 4.0 – 4.1 – 4.2 – 4.1 – 4.3 – 4.3 – 4.4, 6+). A combined -1.0 since May when it was #1 (7.0 – 6.8 – 6.2 – 6.0, 6+), co-owned urban AC WDAS-FM “Philly’s Best R&B and Throwbacks” carries on at #4. The seven-tenths that KYW gained in June and July (4.6 – 4.9 – 5.3, 6+) is erased in August, as the CBS Radio all-news outlet moves from sixth to seventh (4.6, 6+). After nine successive sweeps without a decrease that resulted in a net gain of nine-tenths (1.1 – 1.3 – 1.3 – 1.3 – 1.4 – 1.4 – 1.5 – 1.7 – 1.8 – 2.0, 6+), Radio One’s WPHI “Boom 103.9” (unchanged at #19) regresses by three-tenths to 1.7 (6+).

9) Long Island – Joined together at 6.2 (6+) in July, Connoisseur Media hot AC WALK-FM “Real Variety 97.5” and Cox Media Group-owned CHR WBLI “Long Island’s #1 For All the Hits” break the tie at #1 as WALK-FM adds seven-tenths to 6.9 while WBLI falters by six-tenths to 5.6, segueing to #2. Thus, “Real Variety” opens up a fairly comfortable 1.3-share (6+) advantage over WBLI, which ends at seven its consecutive string of up or flat trends for a +2.2 since the “Holiday” 2016 report (4.0 – 4.5 – 4.5 – 4.8 – 5.0 – 5.4 – 5.8 – 6.2, 6+). After three consecutive gains that netted a +2.1 (4.2 – 5.1 – 5.3 – 6.3, 6+), WALK-FM dropped one-tenth in July. A full-share loss in March (5.2 – 4.2, 6+) resulted in “Real Variety” tumbling from fourth to seventh, but it jumped to first in April with a gain of nine-tenths. Unchanged at #7, CBS Radio sports talk WFAN improves by two-tenths to 4.2 (6+), curtailing four straight down or flat trends for a -.8 (4.8 – 4.8 – 4.7 – 4.4 – 4.0, 6+). From a .4 (6+) in May to a “no show” in June, the “stream” of hot AC cluster-mate WNEW-FM “Fresh 102.7” bounced back with a +.5 in July (to .5, #32, 6+) but disappears in August. Within 2.0 – 2.9 range (6+) for the 33rd straight sweep, Emmis rhythmic CHR WQHT “Hot 97” is steady at 2.4 (6+) and remains at #16. Down one full-share as the result of six consecutive sweeps without an increase (2.5 – 2.4 – 2.1 – 2.1 – 1.6 – 1.6 – 1.5, 6+), Cumulus Media’s WNSH “94.7 Nash FM” slides from #22 to #23. Down or flat for the fourth successive sweep (4.7 – 4.5 – 4.4 – 4.3 – 4.3, 6+), Connoisseur Media classic hits-oldies WBZO is off by four-tenths but “103.1 Max FM” actually climbs from sixth to fifth.

10) Riverside – Trending 4.0 – 4.6 – 4.6 – 4.1 – 4.2 (6+) since March, Univision Radio’s Spanish contemporary KLVE “107.5 K-Love” erupts with a +1.1 to 5.3, its strongest 6+-share in the Inland Empire since December 2016’s 6.0, to march from fifth to second. Down or flat since April for a net loss of nine-tenths (1.5 – .8 – .8 – .6, 6+), All-Pro Broadcasting adult contemporary KATY “101.3 The Mix” recaptures all but one-tenth to 1.4 (+.8, #14 to #11, 6+). In addition to being #1 for the 22nd consecutive ratings period, Entravision Spanish adult hits KLYY “Jose” is up three-tenths to 7.0 (6+), thus applying the brakes to six consecutive decreases for a net loss of nearly three full-shares (9.4 – 9.2 – 8.6 – 8.3 – 8.1 – 7.9 – 6.7, 6+); “Jose” fell below a seven-share for the first time since May 2016’s 6.5. After five consecutive sweeps without a decrease which produced a +2.2 (7.2 – 7.5 – 7.5 – 8.3 – 8.7 – 9.4, 6+), “Jose” lost two-tenths in February. Having been in the runner-up slot the past seven ratings periods, Anaheim Broadcasting classic hits-oldies outlet KOLA falters by seven-tenths (5.8 – 5.1, 6+) and moves to #3. KOLA was a combined +1.0 in April and May (5.2 – 5.6 – 6.2, 6+), but repeated June’s -.2 in July (6.2 – 6.0 – 5.8, 6+). A four-tenths loss in March ended at five its string of consecutive fluctuations by one-half share (7.1 – 6.6 – 6.1 – 5.6 – 6.1 – 5.6, 6+) for a collective -1.5; KOLA was at #2 six straight times before dropping to third in “Holiday” 2016. Prior to November, it was up or flat the previous six times for a net gain of +2.2 (4.9 – 4.9 – 5.6 – 6.5 – 6.8 – 6.9 – 7.1, 6+). The six most recent trends for iHeartMedia rhythmic CHR KGGI are 4.6 – 4.4 – 4.6 – 4.4 – 4.5 – 4.2 (fourth to fifth, 6+), while Good News Radio contemporary Christian KSGN “89.7 Family Friendly” is trending 1.6 – 1.6 – 1.8 – 1.8 – 1.8 – 1.8 – 1.6 – 1.6 (ninth to tenth, 6+).

11) San Jose – Owing to a +1.1 (3.7 – 4.8, 6+), Alpha Media classic hits-oldies KBAY “94.5 Bay FM – The Bay’s Greatest Hits” has its strongest 6+-stat since 8.0 in the “Holiday” 2016 report and progresses from ninth to fifth. It is tied there with Entercom adult contemporary KOIT-FM “96.5 Better Music for a Better Workday” which advances from #8 by adding one full-share to 4.8 (6+) and ending at four its consecutive streak of negative or flat trends that resulted in a loss of seven-tenths (4.5 – 4.4 – 4.1 – 3.8 – 3.8, 6+). The combination of a +.7 by CBS Radio all-news operation KCBS-AM (6.2 – 6.9, 6+) and a loss of four-tenths by Northern California Public Broadcasting’s KQED-FM (7.3 – 6.9, 6+) results in those two being tied at #1. When KCBS-AM added three-tenths in May, it ended a string of three consecutive down or flat trends that produced a -.6 (6.7 – 6.7 – 6.3 – 6.1, 6+). Over and above recapturing 80% of the cumulative -1.5 it lost in four straight downward sweeps (7.6 – 7.5 – 7.2 – 6.3 – 6.1, 6+), KQED-FM advanced from third to first in July. Unlisted in San Jose since posting a 5.1 (6+) in the “Holiday” 2015 report, KQED-FM returned in January 2017 by recording a 6.9 (6+) to finish at #1 and had been on top through April. Posting a +.6 to 6.0, Alpha Media hot AC KEZR has its highest 6+-share since March 2015 (6.0, as well); “Mix 106 – Today’s Best Music” advances from fourth to third. Improving by one-half share each are iHeartMedia hot AC KIOI “Star 101.3 – More Music, More Variety” (3.5 – 4.0, #11 to #9, 6+) and Cumulus Media classic rock KSAN “107.7 The Bone” (1.8 – 2.3, 6+), which enters the top twenty at #18. A collective -1.2 since April as the result of three downward trends in succession (1.6 – 1.4 – 1.1 – .4, 6+), Entercom sports talk and Oakland A’s flagship KGMZ “95.7 The Game” picks up one-tenth to .5 and is unchanged at #31. As the result of three straight down or flat trends, Lazer Broadcasting regional Mexican KXZM has lost exactly 50% of its 6+-share (3.0 – 2.6 – 2.6 – 1.5, 6+) with “Radio Lazer 93.7” fading from #16 to #26. One-tenth behind KXZM is similarly-programmed/Spanish Broadcasting System-owned KRZZ “93.3 La Raza” (#27), which spirals by six-tenths to 1.4, its softest 6+-share in San Jose since 1.0 in December 2016. Having sputtered by six-tenths in July to curtail at six a successive string of up or flat trends that yielded a +.9 (4.7 – 5.0 – 5.1 – 5.1 – 5.1 – 5.2 – 5.6, 6+), iHeartMedia-owned WAXQ “Q-104.3 New York’s Classic Rock” progresses by one-half share (5.0 – 5.5, 6+) and carries on in third-place. Picking up one half share in back-to-back ratings periods (4.5 – 5.0 – 5.5, 6+), Spanish Broadcasting System Spanish tropical WSKQ “La Mega 97.9” mirrors the 6+ July 2017 to August 2017 profile of WAXQ. In addition to WAXQ and WSKQ, Cumulus Media news/talk WABC improves by one-half share as well (1.4 – 1.9, #22, 6+). The nine-tenths lead that iHeartMedia New York City adult contemporary WLTW “Lite FM” held over Beasley Media Group’s similarly-formatted WMGQ “Magic 98.3” in June evaporates as “Lite-FM” picks up one-tenth (4.3 – 4.4 seventh to sixth, 6+), while “Magic” gains two-tenths (4.2 – 4.4, eighth to sixth, 6+). Following seven straight sweeps without a decrease to double (+2.4) its 6+-share (2.4 – 2.7 – 3.6 – 3.9 – 3.9 – 4.2 – 4.6 – 4.8, 6+), Emmis New York City rhythmic CHR WQHT “Hot 97” hands over nine-tenths (3.9, 6+), shifting from fifth to eighth. Decreasing by one-half share each are Spanish Broadcasting System Spanish contemporary WPAT “93.1 Amor” (2.7 – 2.2, #16 to #20, 6+) and Emmis’ WLIB “1190 Your Home for Gospel, Inspiration, and Information” (.9 – .4, #29, 6+). A collective +1.4 in four consecutive increases (2.1 – 2.3 – 2.5 – 3.2 – 3.5, 6+), Cumulus Media hot AC WPLJ “New York’s 95.5 PLJ” loses four-tenths to 3.1 and is flat at #12 (6+).

cookewriterNASHVILLE — Each year, there’s one session at the NAB/RAB Radio Show I reckon that – alone – was worth the trip.  Researcher Gordon Borrell nailed it this year with his presentation “Reach Beyond Radio: The Local Media Company of the Future.”

He began with a-whack-on-the-side-of-the-head, saying “It’s as if it’s 100 years ago, and we’re blacksmiths, watching our customers ride by in cars.”  Instead, “be in the transportation business.”

Admittedly, I’m a fan of Borrell’s work, and he and I share some client stations.  But the future he described isn’t conjecture.  Specific action steps he detailed flow from proprietary survey data including interviews with 7,500+ of the small businesses radio wants on-air.

mckayjeffwriterNASHVILLE — I’m taking in sessions and talking with people in halls here in Nashville to at the NAB/RAB Radio Show to hear what’s on their minds.  Here are comments from some of the folks with whom I spoke on day one of the convention.

Christina Albee, chief marketing officer for Cumulus Media, says she was surprised to find so many young people — and especially young women — in the audience for her speed mentoring session.  “The young people are our future.  I met people in my session who were running their college radio stations and gaining hands-on experience.  We were also not just talking about AM/FM radio with these young people.  We talked content and they were really understanding the power of content, whether over the air or digitally or over a mobile device.  In publishing there are a lot of women both in and out of management.  However, in radio there are more men in leadership roles.  Of course at Cumulus, our CEO (Mary Berner) and the Westwood One president (Suzanne Grimes) are women…and then to walk in to this room and see so many college-age women with their high interest level warms my heart, honestly, I’m empowered to want to be a part of the radio business.  It bodes very well for the future of radio.”

Steve Czaban Exits SB Nation Radio.  Washington, DC-based sports media pro Steve Czaban blogs that hisczabansteve contract with SB Nation Radio – formerly Yahoo! Sports Radio – has not been renewed so he’s ended his morning radio show there.  Czaban writes, “I want to thank David Gow, Craig Larson, and the rest of the network for having me for 6 great years. They always treated me right, and let me do the kind of show that I wanted to do, a show that I was energized to do every morning.”  Czaban remains on the air as he also co-hosts the afternoon drive “Sports Reporters” show on Red Zebra’s WTEM, Washington “ESPN 980” with Andy Pollin.

Radio Tips Wells Fargo Troubles.  Sunday evening talk host Walter Sterling – heard on CBS RADIO’s WPHT, Philadelphia – says he was the first to reveal the Wells Fargo apparent fee scam.  The federal investigation has resulted in the CEO being grilled before Congress and more than 5,000 Wells Fargo employees being let go for opening fake accounts and charging fees to those accounts.  Sterling says, “I noticed charge after charge on my Wells account that made no sense and I yelled about it.  On my show, my goal was not to go after any one bank but to empathize with the listener who is being screwed by their bank.  I also talk about my suspicious cell phone bill and last week the FCC announced an investigation of Verizon fees.”  Sterling says his show is unique because he doesn’t talk election politics, “I talk about the politics of my life: the phone bill, bank nonsense, cheap relatives, parent-teacher conferences and the 11-year-old who doesn’t like the way I make her lunch.”

zeolidaughter16WPHT, Philadelphia’s Rich Zeoli Welcomes New Daughter.  Afternoon drive personality Rich Zeoli spent the past couple of weeks doing his WPHT, Philadelphia from Utah – via the reliable Comrex Access – while going through the process of adopting his new daughter Clare Megan Zeoli (pictured with dad here).  Zeoli, who also adopted a son named Patrick in 2014, tells TALKERS, “I was fortunate enough to interview Ivanka Trump about her maternity leave plan while feeding my daughter from my makeshift Utah studio…a closet! Irony?”

CBS RADIO and Westwood One Renew Distribution Deal.  This is a relationship that has been in effect for more than 20 years and with today’s announcement, we know that CBS RADIO and Westwood One are extending that multi-platform content and distribution agreement for an unspecified number of years into the future.  This deal means Westwood One will continue to distribute: CBS Sports Radio, CBS Radio News, and “The Daly Download with Carson Daly.”

Industry Memorial Event Planned for Dr. Joy Browne in NYC.  A memorial event titled “A Celebration of Joy” is planned as a tribute to the late Dr. Joy Browne who unexpectedly died on Saturday, August 27.  The event brownejoywill take place on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 between 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm at the Helen Mills Theater, 139 W. 26th Street in Manhattan.  Although admission is free, seating will be limited and open only to members of the radio, theater and media industries as well as friends and family of the late talk radio star and advance registration is required.  To register, please call Barbara Kurland at 413-565-5413 or email event coordinator Michael Harrison at michael@talkers.com. RAIN publisher Kurt Hanson’s State of the Industry presentation summarized Edison Research and other data I’ve covered here; and he urged that broadcasters show up everywhere listeners now use to consume audio.  Use is migrating from “single-purpose AM/FM receivers to multi-purpose connected devices.”  1 of every 5 audio minutes are now heard via smartphone.

Clear Channel’s WMMS-FM, Cleveland Disciplines Morning Talent for Off-Color Comment.  “Rover’s Morning Glory” cast member Dominic Dieter has been disciplined in response to comments made on the morning show – though the extent of the discipline is not known.  A father e-mailed the show stating he saw his daughter kissing another girl and asked what he should do.  Dieter responded he should have a friend “screw [her] straight.”  For obvious reasons, a bad joke about raping a young woman in response to her possible homosexuality raised the ire of some listeners and caught the attention of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.  To the credit of CC’s local management, it acted quickly.  The station met immediately with GLAAD representatives, took Dieter off the air (for how long has yet to be determined) and had him record an apology which included the following.  “I want to genuinely apologize to anyone who may have been offended by what I said.  I regret what I did say.  My comments were inappropriate.  They were inexcusable, and just downright stupid.  And I want to make it clear; there was absolutely no intention to promote physical or sexual violence.”  CC Cleveland operations manager Keith Abrams stated to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, “We take matters of this nature very seriously; his comment was thoughtless and unacceptable, and we apologize to those who were offended.  We can assure you the appropriate disciplinary action has been taken, and Dieter has since apologized on air and is fully aware that what he said was unacceptable.  We also want you to be aware that during Friday’s broadcast, he was in fact immediately criticized on-air by the other hosts of the show, and the rest of the segment was dedicated to a productive discussion about the acceptance of all lifestyles.  It included call-ins and commentary from members and friends of the gay community.  WMMS supports the gay community and again, we deeply apologize.”  GLAAD’s Aaron McQuade tells the paper the station has also invited the gay rights group Equality Ohio to join its community advisory board.

Cumulus Media and Townsquare Media Pull Off Big Deal.  This deal gives each side what it wanted but it reportedly took about a year to finalize.  Here’s who gets what:  Townsquare Media gives its stations in Peoria, Illinois and Bloomington, Illinois to Cumulus plus $116 million while getting from Cumulus the stations in 11 small markets – Kileen-Temple, Texas; New Bedford, Massachusetts; Odessa-Midland, Texas; Binghamton, New York; Bangor, Maine; Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Grand Junction, Colorado; Augusta-Waterville, Maine; Bismarck, North Dakota; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Presque Isle, Maine.  Industry watchers are noting that Cumulus is very happy to get the cash infusion it needs after spending $2.4 billion on the Citadel deal and Townsquare Media is happy to focus on the local aspect of small and mid-size market radio.

Cumulus Media’s News/Talk KCMO, Kansas City Adds FM Signal.  Kansas City news/talker KCMO begins an FM simulcast on 103.7 – a translator that had been simulcasting the company’s classic rock KCFX-FM.  The signal is 250 watts but covers the heart of the Kansas City metro.  Cumulus Kansas City SVP and market manager Mark Sullivan states, “This is an exciting day for KCMO Talk Radio as it provides us a platform to continue to be successful into the future.”  In a statement, the company notes that John Dickey, co-chief operating officer for Cumulus commented in a recent article in the Atlanta Business Chronicle that “having this format on FM is really the future!”

Courtside Entertainment Group Adds Dr. Drew Feature to WTOP, Washington.  The “One Minute Clinic with Dr. Drew” finds a home on Hubbard Broadcasting’s major market WTOP, Washington.  DC joins New York, Los Angeles and Chicago in receiving Dr. Drew Pinsky’s latest media project – 60-second commentaries covering relationship advice and hot topics plus the latest news from the medical world.  WTOP program director Laurie Cantillo states, “In addition to breaking news, Campaign 2012, traffic, and weather coverage, WTOP brings listeners useful and relevant information on health, relationships, and consumer issues.  Dr. Drew offers practical, actionable content that’s appointment listening on WTOP.”

Greater Media’s Philly Sports Combo Grabs NHL’s Flyers for Multi-Year Deal.  There’s an aggressive acquisition of play-by-play rights going on in Philadelphia as Greater Media’s sports talk combo – WPEN-FM 97.5 The Fanatic and WPEN-AM 950 ESPN Radio – adds Flyers hockey to their programming beginning with the 2012-2013 season.  This comes just days after the stations grabbed 76ers basketball from CBS Radio’s crosstown WIP.  Flyers games will be broadcast on both sports outlets and a few will air on rock WMMR-FM.  Comcast-Spectacor (Flyers owner) president Peter Luukko says, “We’re thrilled to be working with a partner that is 100% committed and excited about the Philadelphia Flyers.  We’re also happy that the Sixers have moved over to Greater Media Philadelphia along with us.  Greater Media is an incredible partner that offers extensive promotional support for the Flyers on all their stations.”

CBS Radio Violated Sixers Contract Reports Philly Daily News.  The reason Greater Media was able to snag the 76ers for the playoffs this year though CBS Radio had the rights to the team’s play-by-play throughout this season is because CBS violated the contract, according to the Philadelphia Daily NewsDan Gross.  The paper reports CBS Radio failed to give the Sixers proper notice before bumping an April 3 game to classic hits WOGL-FM.  Gross writes that after the deal with Greater Media was consummated, Sixers CEO Adam Aron stated, “The Sixers’ rapidly growing fan base will no longer have to set their radios to ‘scan’ to find where their Sixers will be aired.”  CBS Radio market manager Marc Rayfield told the paper the two sides parted ways amicably.

Michael Harrison Set to Address 2012 Radio Show on State of Talk Radio.  In what has become an industry tradition running more than a decade, TALKERS magazine founder and publisher Michael Harrison will again deliver the annual “State of Talk Radio” address at the NAB/RAB Radio Show.  Harrison will speak on Wednesday, September 19 between 10:30 am and 11:45 am at a special Info-Session sponsored by TALKERS.  The national conference will take place this year September, 19-21 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas.  Harrison’s address is open to all 2012 Radio Show registrants.

Rush Limbaugh Helps Raise $3.3 Million for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Premiere Networks superstar Rush Limbaugh dedicated three hours of his nationally syndicated talk show on April 13 to raising funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Including a personal donation of $400,000, as of April 20 the cure-a-thon has brought in pledges of $3.3 million.  This is the 22nd year Limbaugh’s program has held the cure-a-thon and has helped raise more than $34 million for the organization during that time.

Federated Media to Add FM Simulcast to Sports WKJG, Fort Wayne.  Beginning June 4, Federated Media will flip Froggy 106.7 — WFGA-FM, Ft. Wayne (licensed to Hicksville, Ohio) to sports simulcasting WKJG – ESPN 1380.  At that time the station will also add a local PM drive show featuring sister rock WBYR-FM operations manager Stiller and WKJG PD and WOWO APD Brian LaMartina.  Federated Media COO Mark DePrez states, “The Stiller and Brian show is the first step toward combining the world renowned ESPN brand with an increased local connection.  Peter Drucker said concentration is the key to all economic success.  In Fort Wayne, we have gone from seven to five brands to serve this community more effectively, efficiently and most importantly more profitably.  It sounds cliché but it is true that when one door closes another opens.  We salute the staff of Froggy 106.7 for their years of dedication and commitment to community radio.”

2012 Presidential Race, Escaped Chinese Activist, EPA vs Oil and Gas Industries, White House Correspondents Dinner, and Bin Laden Death Anniversary Among Top News/Talk Stories Yesterday (4/30).  The 2012 presidential campaign; the case of escaped Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng on the eve of visit to China by Hillary Clinton; EPA administrator resigns after comments about making an example of oil and gas companies; the aftermath of the White House Correspondents Dinner; and the anniversary of the death of Osama bin Laden were some of the most-talked-about stories on news/talk radio yesterday.

Dr. Daliah Wachs Helps Organization Raise $17, 000 for Autism Charity.  Las Vegas-based nationally syndicated talk show host Dr. Daliah Wachs helped the Finding Autistic Solutions for Tomorrow organization raise some $17, 000 during its FAST for Kids Gala on April 28 at the Las Vegas Hotel and Casino.  The event was hosted by local Fox TV news personalities Heidi Hayes and Ted Pretty.  Pictured here is Dr. Daliah Wachs (l) promoting the fundraiser on Fox 5 News.

Premiere Networks Talk Star Glenn Beck to Hold “Restoring Courage” Rally in Israel; Spending $1 Million of his Own Money on Events. The long-promised week of Glenn Beck-sponsored events in Israel are beginning and lead up to Wednesday’s “Restoring Courage” rally at the Southern Wall excavations site in Jerusalem. Gil Hoffman writes in the Jerusalem Post that there was an event for Christians last night in Caesarea and a Holocaust-related event is planned for today (8/22). Beck has been criticized in some quarters for the events. Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater wrote in the Los Angeles Jewish Journal that Beck’s events are “nothing more than a media driven, money-making, self-serving, end-of-times messianic-lunacy circus show.” But Beck says the Wednesday rally will be nothing of the kind and encourages his critics to watch it. He states he’s losing about $1 million of his own money sponsoring the event. He’s quoted in the Jerusalem Post saying, “I am doing it because I’m obedient and I do what I’m supposed to do: to show the world the courage of Israelis and the choice between good and evil and life and death, and to remind people that life’s not a spectator sport.” Beck claims the event is not political and simply serves to show the world that Israel does not stand alone. Some Arab Knesset members are warning Beck’s rally could spark violence. (August 22, 2011)

Michael Harrison to Deliver Annual “State of Talk Radio” Address at Forthcoming NAB/RAB Radio Show in Chicago. For the seventh consecutive year, TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison will deliver his annual “State of Talk Media” address at a special Info-Session at the NAB/RAB Radio Show. This year’s presentation, sponsored by TALKERS, will take place during the national confab’s first morning between 10:30 am and 11:45 am on Wednesday, September 14 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago hotel and is open to all registrants of the conference. During this year’s address, Harrison will be focusing on The 10 Most Important Things Broadcasters Need to Know about the Enormous Changes Taking Place in Talk Media at this Very Moment. Townsquare Media Officially Closes on the Millennium Properties. Townsquare Media chairman and CEO Steven Price announces the company closes on its acquisition of the 11 Millennium Radio Holdings, LLC stations, including FM talk giant WKXW-FM Trenton – New Jersey 101.5. Price states, “The acquisition of Millennium is consistent with our strategy of owning market-leading media properties in small and mid‐sized markets. We are excited to continue to add premier assets to our portfolio including, New Jersey’s leading talk radio station, WKXW 101.5. The strength and depth of the Millennium team is an excellent addition to Townsquare Media and we are excited to add new advertisers and to broaden our audience reach.” Zoe Burdine-Fly oversees the former Millennium operations for Townsquare Media. KSTP, Minneapolis Pairs “Mr. Phunn” with Judd Zulgad. Hubbard Broadcasting announces evening host Joe “Mr. Phunn” Anderson moves to middays to co-host the 9:00 am to 12:00 noon show with Judd Zulgad beginning September 6. Zulgad is the Minneapolis Star Tribune sports columnist who’s exiting his newspaper gig to focus on his sports talk host career at KSTP. Zulgad has hosted a weekend show on the station since February and it was recently announced he’ll be joining KSTP for a daily show. KSTP program director Brad Lane has not announced who will fill Anderson’s 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm evening show but says of the pairing of Zulgad and Anderson, “We think this duo will not only provide Twin Cities sports fans a new option for 9:00 am to 12:00 noon apart from their normal listening routine, but become a mainstay in the market and a wonderful lead in for Reusse & Mackey.” (August 22, 2011)

Citadel’s WLS, Chicago Woos Mary Frances Bragiel from WBBM. Veteran Chicago news person Mary Frances Bragiel leaves CBS Radio’s all-news WBBM, Chicago to become the afternoon and evening news anchor and reporter at Citadel’s news/talk WLS, according to Time Out Chicago’s Robert Feder. There’s been a lot of movement in the radio news game in Chicago recently and Feder observes, “The position Bragiel fills has been open since WLS promoted Dave Stewart to midday news anchor, and both Lise Dominique and Monica DeSantis moved to FM News 101.1. The realignment puts seasoned Chicago radio veterans in every weekday news slot on WLS, including John Dempsey in mornings, Stewart in middays, Jim Johnson in afternoons, and Bragiel in evenings.” (August 22, 2011)

WWRL, New York to Broadcast Live from National King Memorial Dedication and Rally. The Access.1 Communications station is broadcasting live from Washington, DC on Saturday, August 27 from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm with Rev. Al Sharpton and the National Action Network. The broadcast will be anchored by Professor Ron Daniels and Rennie Bishop. Sharpton, whose radio program airs on WWRL, states, “There are relatively few moments in our lives that make history. The weekend of August 27-28, 2011 will be one for the history books as we not only commemorate the 48th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s ‘I Have A Dream Speech,’ but also when the world bears witness to the unveiling of the National King Memorial. As the rally and march will signify, and for those who may be quick to forget the legacy of Dr. King, let us remember that he died while fighting for worker’s rights and the basic human dignity of all.” (August 22, 2011)

Clear Channel Houston Promotes Two in Sales. Clear Channel Houston director of sales Bo Brown announces two promotions. Bob Merril takes on the role of general sales manager for news/talk KTRH, Houston. He’s been serving as GSM for two other AM stations in Houston. Of Merril, Brown says, “Bob and I have worked together for the last seven years building a solid AM team. His sports marketing background and never-quit attitude have been a key factor in our success.” Jeff Rovinsky returns to the Houston cluster from Charlotte where he was local sales manager with Clear Channel. He’ll be general sales manager for sports KMBE and news/talk KPRC. Brown says, “When Jeff was offered the local sales manager position in Charlotte a year ago we lost a very talented media executive that excelled in relationship building and direct sales. Bringing him back as a general sales manager for KBME/KPRC is an opportunity we never expected. He is a perfect fit.” (August 22, 2011)

Griese to Replace Mandich for Dophins Radio Broadcasts. Bob Griese and Jim Mandich were both part of the legendary 1972 Miami Dolphins team that went undefeated to a Super Bowl victory. Mandich, who’d been a sports talk host on Beasley’s WQAM and was a longtime voice of the Dolphins on its radio play-by-play broadcasts, died in April after a battle with bile duct cancer. Griese retired from his TV career last year but will be part of Dolphins radio play-by-play this season as he joins Jimmy Cefalo and Joe Rose in the broadcast booth. (August 22, 2011)
