mikemikestudio16‘Mike & Mike’ Get New Studio Look; Molly Qerim Officially Joins Show.  Morning sports talk hosts Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg – a.k.a. “Mike & Mike” – will begin working from a new set on Monday, February 8 (pictured here).  This set is in Bristol and not Manhattan as ESPN had originally planned last year.  The general speculation is that budget cuts put the kibosh on moving the show to New York.  As hinted by ESPN late last year, “First Take” host Molly Qerim officially joins Mike & Mike for the 8:00 am and 9:00 am hours of the 6:00 am to 10:00 am show.  ESPN explains the move stating that Qerim “will present a variety ofqerimmolly content including news and breaking news updates and the hottest trending topics on the sports social media scene.  Each edition of ‘Mike & Mike’ will end with an interaction between the show’s hosts and First Take’s Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith, facilitated by Qerim, to bridge the transition between ESPN2’s morning programs.”  (“First Take” follows “Mike & Mike” at 10:00 am.)  Also, the main ESPN cable channel will launch a new show at 7:00 am on February 8 titled, “SportsCenter:AM.”  ESPN says it has “a new format for ESPN’s signature news and information program designed to serve sports fans as they go about their early morning routine.”

mediamonitors logoMedia Monitors: Fiorina Led Political Radio Buys in Iowa; Hillary Tops in New Hampshire.  More data from Media Monitors is released with regard to political ad buys in the primary season in both the Iowa region and the New Hampshire market during the month of January.  The company reports that Republican Carly Fiorina’s Carly for America super PAC bought 1,435 spots in the Des Moines, Quad Cities, and Omaha markets leading up to yesterday’s Caucuses.  Democrats Bernie Sanders (955) and Hillary Clinton (771) followed Fiorina’s lead.  The rest of the pack looks like this: Ted Cruz, 1,044 (317 from PACs); Donald Trump, 509; and Ben Carson, 632 (312 from a PAC).  Looking at New Hampshire, data was culled from the Boston and Portsmouth-Dover markets.  Hillary Clinton ran 2,535 spots from January 1 to 31.  Bernie Sanders followed with 2,211.  The Republicans ran far fewer spots starting with Donald Trump at 260, the Marco Rubio super PAC Conservative Solutions airing 253, and Ted Cruz airing 240 with added help from super PAC Courageous Conservatives (87) and the Keep The Promise (76).  Chris Christie bought 24 spots and his super PAC America Leads added 233 ads.  Finally, Carly Fiorina’s Super PAC aired 220 spots.

pagsjoeSaxProfile: Compass Media Networks and Premiere-Syndicated Personality Joe Pags.  TALKERS magazine managing editor Mike Kinosian presents a personality profile of WOAI, San Antonio-based, syndicated talk host Joe “Pags” Pagliarulo.  Although he’s officially based at iHeartMedia’s heritage news/talk WOAI, Pags (pictured here enjoying his avocation as a saxophonist) is heard in numerous markets during weekdays and across the country on iHeartMedia’s “The Weekend with Joe Pags.”  Pags didn’t start in radio; his television news career led him into the genre.  Though he says his desire to express his opinions is what made him take a pay cut to leave TV for radio, it’s apparent that his proclivity for humor is a primary motivator.  To be sure, Pags is a conservative, but he doesn’t consider himself a traditional “conservative talk host.”  He says, “At the end of the day, I want the biggest possible audience and I want listeners to get something from what I am delivering.  Caller after caller agreeing with everything you say is bad, boring radio and listeners will shut you off.  I cannot do Obama-bashing for three hours – I just do not have it in me.”  Read Kinosian’s entire piece here.

Odds & Sods.  The weekly New York-focused political talk show “Effective Radio with Bill Samuels” issamuelsbillMorgan16 syndicating and will be heard in Westchester County on WVOX, New Rochelle Mondays from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.  The program – featuring host Bill Samuels (left) and co-host Morgan Pehme (right) – debuted on Sunday mornings on WNYM, New York “AM 970 The Answer” in October…..The weekly “Motley Fool Money” radio show, hosted by Chris Hill, is added to the program schedule at Salem Media Group’s WWMI, Tampa “AM 1380 The Biz.”…..Yahoo! Sports Radio is among the sports radio networks broadcasting from the NFL’s radio row in San Francisco this week.  Personalities Sean Salisbury, Steve Bunin and others will broadcast in advance of Super Bowl 50 on Sunday…..Cumulus Media Dallas reports its charitable works for the calendar year 2015 totaled more than $1.2 million.  Its stations – country KSCS “New Country 96.3,” “99.5 The Wolf,” news/talk WBAP, “The New Hot 93.3,” sports radio KCTK-AM/FM “The Ticket,” news/information KLIF, and sports talk KESN “ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM” – together raised funds, supplies and awareness for multiple charitable organizations through events and on-air and online promotions throughout 2015, including: $205,449 for Cook Children’s Hospital of Fort Worth; $303,157 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; and Norm-A-Thon, which raised $500,400 for Austin Street Center.

ramseydaveRamsey Solutions Hits ‘Major Milestones’ in 2015.  The Tennessee-based company Ramsey Solutions – led by media superstar Dave Ramsey – announces it has surpassed a number of milestones so far in 2015, including hurdling the $100 million revenue mark.  Some of the other accomplishments include: Ramsey’s book, The Total Money Makeover, passing 5 million copies sold; the online budget tool EveryDollar acquiring 500,000 users after only five months; Ramsey Solutions having more than 500 team members, and hoping to add an additional 180 team members over the next 12 months (with more than half being in technology fields).  Ramsey Solutions has been voted one of The Nashville Business Journal’s Best Places to Work eight times.   This fall, Ramsey plans to close on 47 acres in Williamson County, Tennessee for a campus that, when complete, will include three 200,000 square foot office buildings and a 50,000 square foot conference center.  Dave Ramsey comments, “God has blessed us beyond our wildest dreams.  When I started the company 23 years ago I was selling a self-published book out of the trunk of my car, trying to get a radio show off the ground and teaching our financial classes at night using an overhead projector.  I never imagined five New York Times best-sellers, 500 team members and a collection of digital products. businessrockstars logo15‘Banana’ Joe Montione Named VP of Affiliate Relations for ‘Business Rockstars’; New Air Time Announced.  Career radio pro “Banana” Joe Montione is named the new vice president of affiliate relations for Business Rockstars.  At the same time, the company announces that the show time for the long-form “Business Rockstars” program is now 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm ET.  The company calls itself “the largest content platform for entrepreneurs acrossmontionejoe broadcast, mobile and social platforms,” and reports that its 60-second, daily feature is now being heard on such major and large market affiliates as WGN, Chicago; WPHT, Philadelphia; WCCO, Minneapolis; and KMOX, St. Louis.  Business Rockstars Networks co-founder and chairman Steve Lehman states, “‘Business Rockstars’ continues to attract more listeners, market affiliates, and interest.  Our decision to shift to the new airtime was driven by requests from current and new affiliates.  The change in time will add 25 new live affiliates to the Business Rockstars affiliate lineup.”  On joining Business Rockstars, Joe Montione comments, “Business Rockstars is really a hot place to be right now and this opportunity is a great coming home for me.  It’s not every day that you get to work with one of your heroes again, so this reunion with Steve Lehman is exciting to me because of the incredible cutting edge entrepreneurial talk format being pioneered here at Business Rockstars, but also because Steve has been such a great mentor to me in helping to make the transition from on-air personality/programmer to network radio manager and executive.”

wtop logo NEW 1-15WTOP, Washington and CBS News Team for Podcast on Hannah Graham Case.  Washington, DC all-news WTOP and CBS News’ “48 HOURS” are launching a new, five-part podcast anchored by WTOP’s Neal Augenstein that reveals the story of murdered college student Hannah Graham.  “The Hannah Graham Story,” is the first-ever, five-part, show-specific podcast produced in conjunction with the premiere of a new primetime season.  Graham went missing in Charlottesville, Virginia after a night out with friends.  The search for her was the most exhaustive in Virginia history and after her body was found, the investigation into her death, which generated national attention, led police to cases of other unsolved attacks against young women spanning a decade.  Augenstein comments, “The Hannah Graham story is so tragic, yet compelling, that it takes a news team like ‘48 HOURS’ to do it justice.  It’s an honor to collaborate with them on the broadcast and podcast.”

qerimmollyQerim Adds Mike & Mike Role to ESPN Duties.  What was rumored over the summer comes to pass as Molly Qerim joins ESPN Radio’s “Mike & Mike” show as a contributor.  The first hint of Qerim’s future role on the program came around the time ESPN announced Mike Greenberg’s and Mike Golic’s morning show would soon emanate from New York City instead of its Bristol, Connecticut headquarters.  That move has since been nixed – or at least postponed indefinitely.  But, now Qerim’s expanded role with the company is announced.  Qerim rejoined ESPN in July as interim host of “First Take” (hosted by Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith on ESPN2).  She’s also been named full-time moderator of that program.  ESPN says that on the Mike & Mike show, she’ll “present a variety of content including news and breaking news updates.  She will also focus on the hottest trending topics on the sports social scene and will host a short segment late in the show highlighting the segments coming up on that day’s ‘First Take’ program.”

hochmanVegas15weltonWQAM, Miami PM Show Hits Vegas for Mayweather-Berto Fight.  The afternoon drive “Hochman, Crowder, and Krantz” show was in Las Vegas last week leading up to the weekend Floyd MayweatherAndre Berto fight.  While broadcasting from the MGM Grand, the program hosts met Jen Welter, the first female to work as a coach for an NFL team.  Welter, on site to help promote the fight, was an assistant coaching intern with the Arizona Cardinals during training camp this summer.  Pictured here are (from l-r): Zach Krantz, Channing Crowder, Welter, and Marc Hochman.

Odds & Sods.  Business talk outlet WAFS, Atlanta “biz 1190” announces the addition of the Eric Holtzclaw program to its daily lineup, effective September 28.  The native Atlantan’s show will air beginning at 11:00 am on the Salem-owned signal.  Station manager Adam Wattanbarger comments, “Eric was an entrepreneur before being an entrepreneur was cool.  He’s a sought-after expert and speaker on what it takes to successfully establish, grow and nurture businesses.  In short, he’s the perfect addition to biz 1190 AM.”…..The 8th Annual Imus Golf Outing will take place Thursday, September 24 at the Edgewood Country Club in River Vale, New Jersey.  The Imus Ranch Foundation is donating all proceeds from this event to benefit the Tackle Kids Cancer campaign through the HackensackUMC Foundation.  In addition to the proceeds from this event, the Imus Ranch Foundation will donate an additional $250,000 to the Tackle Kids Cancer campaign.  Don and Deirdre Imus will present the donation check to Robert Garrett, CEO of Hackensack University Health Network, in support of this very important program…..The Boomer Esiason Foundation is announcing its second “Bike to Breathe Event: Jerry and Em’s CF Adventure Continues,” a 500-mile bike ride that begins in Bar Harbor, Maine and ends in New York City.  WFAN, New York’s “Boomer & Carton” show will broadcast live from NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, the finish line for the ride, on September 24.

kabc logoCristina Perez Quits KABC, Los Angeles Gig.  There’s no immediate word from Cumulus Media about what it will fill the 9:00 am to 12:00 noon daypart with now that Judge Cristina Perez has resigned from her five-month-old “Judge Cristina Live @ 9” program.  The Southern California attorney, television personality and erstwhile radio host posted an explanation for her exit on her website, stating, in part, “At this time in my life for personal reasons I’ve decided to step away from this radio opportunity.  Because truthfully, I’m a work-a-holic, with a thriving law practice and TV show, a pending TV project and a third book project as well as the establishment of an arbitration/mediation practice.  And, most importantly, I am the mother of an 11 year old girl – and time will not wait as she grows up. I cannot miss another minute of that.”

wls-am logoWLS-AM, Chicago Eliminates APD/Exec. Producer Post.  According to Chicago media writer Robert Feder, Cumulus Media’s elimination of the assistant program director/executive producer position at its Windy City news/talk station means Tracy Slutzkin exits.  Feder writes that she’d been with WLS-AM for a total of 19 years during two stints.  She began with the station as an intern and worked her way up to producer of the Don Wade and Roma morning drive program.  In 2006 – after time at WFLD-TV’s news department – she returned to the station as APD and executive producer.  Program director Peter Bolger will assume her responsibilities.

mikeandmikeMove to NYC Ahead for Mike & Mike; Qerim to Join as Third Personality.  Sports media giant ESPN is confirming it will move the “Mike & Mike in the Morning” show – simulcast on ESPN Radio and cable’s ESPN2 – its Bristol, Connecticut headquarters to studios in New York City effective February 8.  Parent company Disney says, “Being located directly above ABC’s “Good Morning America” studio will allow for a wider variety of in-studio voices from the world of entertainment and pop culture for Mike & Mike as the shows work together on bookings.  GMA contributors will also appear whenqerimmolly opportunities arise – for example, Robin Roberts on sports, GMA legal analyst Ryan Smith discussing legal matters or ABC News chief meteorologist Ginger Zee on weather impacting sports.  When appropriate, Golic and Greenberg will appear on GMA.”  Sports Business Daily is reporting that current NFL Network host Molly Qerim will exit the league-operated cable/satellite channel and become a third member of the show co-hosted by Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg.  ESPN only says it its press release that additional elements to the show will be announced at a later date.

biakelseyBIA/Kelsey Releases Automotive Industry Local Ad Spending Study.  The media consulting firm estimates that the auto industry will spend $15.1 billion in local advertising this year – of which 77% is estimated to be allocated to traditional media.  BIA/Kelsey believes radio will get 11.6% of that.  In releasing the data from this study, SVP and chief economist Dr. Mark Fratrik notes that by 2019, digital advertising will represent 1/3 of the automotive local ad spend.  He says, “The auto industry and television came of age together as keystones of twentieth-century American culture.  The two industries remain closely tied, with the auto industry being dependent on over-the-air television advertising, and all auto vertical subcategories relying heavily on traditional media to get their message to their audience.”  Pure online advertising, consisting primarily of search, is the largest digital automotive channel.  BIA/Kelsey projects all growth in local advertising for the automotive vertical category will occur on online/digital media, reaching 30% of total local advertising by 2019, up from 12% in 2015.  Industry subcategories featured in BIA/Kelsey’s automotive vertical forecast include auto dealers, other motor vehicle dealers, auto parts and accessory stores, tire dealers, and gas stations.

John PotterRAB’s Potter Set to Retire. Fifteen-year senior vice president of professional development John Potter will be leaving the not-for-profit trade association in about seven weeks (6/26). Radio Advertising Bureau president and chief executive officer Erica Farber comments, “We have been extremely fortunate to have John’s sales/management acumen at the RAB, where he truly leaves an indelible mark across the organization and entire radio industry. I tried to talk him out of this; however, it is now time for John to enjoy quality time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He can travel and indulge his passion for photography.” Potter remarks that, throughout his career, he has, “trained nearly 20,000 salespeople and sales managers across all 50 states. I cherish the friendships I have made with myRAB Logo colleagues and I am truly thankful for the great ride. I am looking forward to the next chapter with my family and on the open road.” A then-18-year-old Potter began his radio career nearly 50 years ago as a recording engineer at Ohio State University‘s WOSU. He went on to hold various sales and management positions with Citicasters; Clear Channel (now iHeartMedia); Cumulus; Great American Broadcasting; Great Trails Broadcasting; Jacor; North American Broadcasting; and Taft Broadcasting.

siriusxmSiriusXM to Launch Career Series Targeting Millennials and Their Parents.  The six-part series – called “Career Playbook Radio” – will be hosted by Jim Citrin, partner at executive search firm Spencer Stuart and best-selling author on leadership and career success.  The show is intended to give millennials, young professionals, and parents of recent college grads expert insight into getting a great job and laying the foundation for a successful career.  SiriusXM says it will be a weekly conversation with top executives, industry veterans, and thought leaders sharing their personal experience and knowledge with aspiring young professionals who are seeking to carve out a distinctive place with their careers in the first decade after graduation.  Guests will include:  Gail McGovern, CEO and president, American Red Cross; Justin Smith, CEO, Bloomberg Media Group; J. Patrick Doyle, CEO and president of Domino’s Pizza Inc.; Laszlo Bock, senior vice president of People Operations at Google Inc.; Lori Goler, vice president of human resources and recruiting at Facebook, Inc.; Kristen Fitzpatrick, managing director, alumni & MBA career and professional development, Harvard Business School; Admiral Eric Olson, retired Commander of U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM); and Soo Hong, chief human resource officer, WeWork.   It launches on May 16 and is available via SiriusXM On Demand on smartphones.

The initial rollout incorporated Zipwhip’s technology that allows the station to send and receive text messages using their existing call-in request or studio line telephone numbers into 18 Beasley Media radio stations across 5 markets.  Zipwhip, Inc. is a cloud texting platform and service provider.  Beasley says that as opposed to the traditional texting option for radio stations, short codes, Zipwhip’s technology enables its stations to create a more seamless conversational texting strategy.  “Texting lowers the barrier separating radio-listening consumers and advertisers in a way that is less pervasive and intrusive than current strategies such as email or online display ads.  Beasley stations rely on two-way messaging to build trust and loyalty and ultimately to increase overall engagement by listeners. An added benefit is that stations can offer a new sponsorship opportunity with their text enabled request or studio line.”
