Emmis Communications Reports 2016 Fiscal Q3 Numbers; Radio Segment Basically Flat.  For the company as a whole – which includes radio, publishing and emerging technologies – net revenue was down 5.7% compared to the same period a year ago.  But publishing took the big hit.  Emmis Communications’ radio emmis-logosegment was basically flat – down 0.4%.  For the first nine months of the company’s fiscal year (March-November), the radio segment was down 1.2%.   In its filing with the SEC, the company explains, “For the nine-month period ended November 30, 2016, our performance exceeded the market average [as per Miller Kaplan data] in St. Louis, but we lagged the market average in New York, Los Angeles, Indianapolis and Austin…Our weak performance in Los Angeles mostly related to a format competitor that began directly competing against our station there in February 2015.  The revenue impact has been most pronounced since the fall of 2015. Emmis expects net revenues in Los Angeles will be up slightly from prior year for the three-month period ended February 28, 2017.” Emmis chairman and CEO Jeff Smulyan states, “Emmis Radio is not accustomed to underperforming its markets.  I wassmulyanjeff disappointed in our performance, but remain hopeful that recent ratings gains in Los Angeles and Austin, coupled with continued stellar performance in St. Louis, will lead to better performance in fiscal 2018.  The general sluggishness in the radio industry makes the need for NextRadio all the more important.  NextRadio, the smartphone app that provides free, portable FM radio listening, recently surpassed 10 million downloads and 25 million listening hours.  The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are now FM-enabled across all major wireless carriers in the United States and we reached an agreement with Sprint that keeps NextRadio preloaded on their Android devices.  If NextRadio succeeds, as I believe it will, it will help solve major challenges for every radio station, including ours: establishing a one-to-one relationship with our listeners, regaining our portability, and making us relevant to a generation that thinks terrestrial radio is uncool.  NextRadio gives us new, interactive revenue opportunities with current and potential advertisers – and it takes the compelling content created every day and provides a new platform for it.”

WABC, New York Expands ‘Bernie and Sid’ Show.  New York City news/talker 77 WABC Radio officiallybernieandsid17 announces the expansion of the late morning “Bernie and Sid Show” by an hour – now airing from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon.  Both Bernard McGuirk (right) and Sid Rosenberg (left) continue their roles on Cumulus Media’s WABC-based “Imus in the Morning” program – McGuirk as sidekick and Rosenberg as sports anchor.  It was a year ago that WABC launched the “Bernie and Sid” show that the station describes as delivering the duo’s “passionate conversation about the biggest topics in New York and across the nation” featuring “incredible guests and interaction with great New York listeners.”   WABC program director Craig Schwalb comments, “Bernie and Sid came out of the chute strong and haven’t slowed down.  We are thrilled to add more time to this great show.”

FNC Moves Tucker Carlson into Megyn Kelly’s Slot.  With Fox News Channel star Megyn Kelly nowcarlsontucker moving to NBC News, the cable news outlet announces that Tucker Carlson will move to the 9:00 pm ET slot held by Kelly.  Carlson launched a 7:00 pm ET show on FNC in November and Fox executive chairman Rupert Murdoch says, “In less than two months, Tucker has taken cable news by storm with his spirited interviews and consistently strong performance.  Viewers have overwhelmingly responded to the show and we look forward to him being a part of Fox News’ powerful primetime lineup.”  Taking over Carlson’s 7:00 pm ET slot is longtime FNC anchor Martha MacCallum.

rtdna17honoreesStan Hubbard, Nina Totenberg, and Steve Jones Honored with RTDNA First Amendment Awards.  The 2017 First Amendment Awards honorees have been named by the Radio Television Digital News Association.  There are five awards that will be presented at a ceremony at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, DC on Tuesday, March 14.  Hubbard Broadcasting CEO, president and chairman Stan Hubbard will receive the First Amendment Leadership Award.  NPR legal affairs correspondent Nina Totenberg will receive the RTDNF Lifetime Achievement Award.  ABC News Radio VP and general manager Steve Jones will receive the First Amendment Service Award.  Bloomberg Politics co-managing editors Mark Halperin and John Heilemann will receive the First Amendment Award.  And, CBS News correspondent Bill Whitaker will receive the Leonard Zeidenberg First Amendment Award.  RTDNF chair Kathy Walker comments, “At a time when freedom of the press is facing unprecedented challenges, our honorees stand up for values that are critically important to democracy.”

Russian Hacking Allegations, Future of ObamaCare, Chicago Torture Case, WaPo Fake News Incident, Trump vs Ford and GM, Obama Lame Duck Actions, and NFL Action Among Top News/Talk Stories Yesterday (1/4).  The debate over whether Russia was involved in the hacking of DNC emails and President-Elect Donald Trump’s backing of Julian Assange’s assertion it wasn’t versus the CIA’s belief it was; the Trump Administration’s intention to repeal the Affordable Care Act; the case of a man with special needs tortured live on Facebook in Chicago; criticism of the Washington Post’s incorrect reporting of the Russian hacking of the U.S. electrical grid via a Vermont utility; Donald Trump’s challenges to automakers Ford and General Motors to not move American jobs to Mexico; the actions being taken by President Obama to preserve his administration’s legislation; and the NFL playoffs were some of the most-talked-about stories on news/talk radio yesterday, according to ongoing research from TALKERS magazine.

Odds & Sods.  In the Orlando market, iHeartMedia announces that talk WTKS-FM “Real Radio 104.1” programbradshawjack director Jack Bradshaw is now also overseeing the programming at sports talk W245CL “96.9 The Game.”…..Sports talk radio programmer Jason Barrett – president of Barrett Sports Media – reports he’s entering the podcasting space with a new, weekly show that will “give media professionals and sports radio and television fans a deeper look into the careers, strategies, and experiences of the industry’s best personalities, contributors, programmers, and executives.”  Barrett’s first episode hits the “air” on February 8…..Pubcaster WBUR, Boston – the market’s NPR affiliate is inviting public radio journalists, age 35 and under, to submit entries for the annual Daniel Schorr Journalism Prize.  Eligible works will have been broadcast or published between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2016.  The $5,000 Schorr Prize – sponsored by WBUR and Boston University, and funded by Jim and Nancy Bildner – recognizes a rising star in public radio and seeks to inspire a new generation of journalists to stretch the boundaries of the medium.

radioinfo-web-bannerEntercom Splits WAAF, Boston Simulcast; Launches Urban ‘The New 97.7.’  For years, Entercom has been simulcasting rock outlet WAAF (licensed to suburban Westborough) on the 107.3 frequency and on WKAF (licensed to south suburban Brockton) on the 97.7 frequency.  Now, the company splits that and launches an urbanwkaf outlet on WKAF branded “The New 97.7, Boston’s #1 For R&B.”  Entercom says for WAAF the simulcast “delivered little appreciable audience beyond the primary station’s booming signal.”   Programming the new urban outlet is Chris Malone, who arrives from Cumulus Media’s WRBO and WKIM in Memphis.  The station is being consulted by Jay Dixon, KBLX/KRBQ, San Francisco director of programming and operations Elroy Smith, and Sean Ross, VP of music and programming for Edison Research.   Entercom New England VP/market manager Phil Zachary says, “Boston has a higher concentration of African-American consumers than San Francisco or Los Angeles, but no rated urban signals.  The prospect of reaching almost 8% of the population with one radio station in a top 10 market is almost inconceivable in 2017.”

CBS RADIO Flips WZMP, Philly to AC as ‘Today’s 96.5.’  The former CHR outlet drops the hit intensive “96.5wzmp AMP’ brand and re-positions WZMP as a workplace-friendly adult contemporary as “Today’s 96.5.”  Bobby Smith is serving as the station’s program director.  He states, “This is a station that will make you forget that you’re still at work, with one great song after another, while delivering on the promise of having fewer interruptions so you can always look forward to hearing another great song.”

iHeartMedia Orlando Promotes Brian Mack and Dwight Ricketts.  At the Orlando cluster ofmackbrian iHeartMedia, Brian Mack is being named the new program director for adult contemporary WMGF rickettsdwight“Magic 107.7.”  In addition, Mack will become the vice president of branding for the cluster.  This is a newly created role in which he’ll oversee the marketing strategy for the company’s nine radio stations.  He will also continue to serve as the program director for CHR WXXL “XL 106.7.”  At the same time, “104.5 The Beat” afternoon personality Dwight “D-Strong” Ricketts is named PD for the hip hop outlet heard on translator W283AN (licensed to Altamonte Springs).

Matt Cord Moves to Mornings at WBEN, Philadelphia.  Making the move from rock to adult hits is Mattwbenfmamshow17 Cord, who is partnered up with Kristen Herrmann for the morning drive show on Beasley Media’s WBEN-FM, Philadelphia.  Cord was most recently evening personality on the company’s sister rock outlet WMMR.   Cord says, “Coming from WMMR, I know how important and powerful morning radio can be.  Moving to mornings on BEN FM is a great opportunity for me to stay with Beasley Media Group and offer another great option for Philly morning radio listeners.  I’m thrilled to work with Kristen, too.  She’s super talented.  We’re going to have a lot of fun.”

More Music Radio News and Career Moves.  In the Denver market, Kroenke Sports Entertainment names Bo Jaxon program director and morning personality (alongside Jenny D) at its country KWOF “92.5 The Wolf.”  Jaxon, who takes over for Ed Hill, continues his role as program director for the company’s hot AC KIMN “MIX 100.”…..In San Francisco, KFOG morning host Matt Pinfield announces he’s taking some time off from duties at the Cumulus Media triple A station to deal with his alcohol abuse issues…..Rick Daniels is named the brand manager at Leighton Broadcasting’s country KYCK, Grand Forks, North Dakota.  He replaces Brandon Young…..At Impact Radio Group in Boise, Curtis Booker moves up from APD and afternoon personality to program director for hot AC KZMG “My 102.7.”

Beasley Broadcast Group Q2 Net Revenue Up 2.8%.  The net revenue of $27.8 million represents a year-over-year increase of 2.8% for the second quarter of 2016.  For the first six months of the year, net revenue was $55.2 million, a year-over-year increase of 7.3%.  In a statement, Beasley Broadcast Group says the Q2 figure beasley logo long“primarily reflects higher revenue from its Tampa-St. Petersburg and Charlotte market clusters.  Station Operating Income declined 2.8% during the second quarter of 2016 because of “a $1 million, or 5.3%, increase in station operating expenses at the Tampa-St. Petersburg and Charlotte market clusters, partially as a result of higher bonuses earned, cash promotions, event/concert expenses and third party costs associated with digital services, which more than offset the increase in 2016 second quarter revenue.”  Interim CEO and chief operating officer Caroline Beasleybeasleycaroline states, “During the second quarter, Beasley’s clusters again outperformed the markets that report to Miller Kaplan on a combined revenue basis and we expect this trend to continue in 2016.  In particular, we saw very strong results at our Tampa-Saint Petersburg cluster though our Augusta, Charlotte, Fayetteville, Ft. Myers-Naples and Greenville-New Bern-Jacksonville clusters also outperformed their respective markets on a revenue basis.”  Referencing the just-announced acquisition of Greater Media’s radio stations, Beasley says the deal will “significantly broaden our local radio broadcasting and digital platform, footprint and revenue base by adding stations that are geographically complementary to our existing operating base while presenting the opportunity for synergies with the company’s existing operations.  Specifically, the transaction is expected to increase our broadcast portfolio by approximately 40% and more than double our revenue and audience reach, giving us market leading stations, great brands and an opportunity to engage with brand new markets.”

cbsradioCBS RADIO Dips 1% During Second Quarter.  The breakout of the performance of CBS RADIO’s stations doesn’t get real specific – the company lumps the division into the Local Broadcasting category with its O&O TV stations – but simply notes that revenue was off 1% for the quarter, as was the CBS Television Stations segment.  As a whole, CBS Corp. is reporting revenue for the second quarter of 2016 increased 2% to $3.29 billion from $3.22 billion for the same prior-year period.

‘ESPNLA 710AM’ and Time Warner Announce Simulcast Deal.  A five-hour block of sports talk radio from ESPN O&O KSPN, Los Angeles “ESPNLA 710AM” will be simulcast on Time Warner Cable SportsNet.  The two kspnparties are announcing a multi-year programming agreement to simulcast the “Thompson & Trudell” and “Mason & Ireland” shows beginning Wednesday, August 3.  The “Thompson & Trudell show” is co-hosted by Mychal Thompson and Mike Trudell, and airs from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.  The “Mason & Ireland” show is co-hosted by Steve Mason and John Ireland and airs from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm. ESPNLA VP and general manager Scott McCarthy comments, “We are thrilled to work with Time Warner Cable SportsNet to increase the shows’ exposure, allowing Los Angeles sports fans to see another side of our fantastic personalities.  The synergy of our Lakers broadcast relationships makes this a natural fit and will provide fans compelling content on a daily basis.”

Cox Promotes Rohr to Ohio Market Vice President.  Taking over for the retiring Julia Wallace as Cox Media Group Ohio market vice president is Rob Rohr.  He rises from his previous post as senior vice presidentrohrrob and general manager of CMG Ohio.  CMG EVP Mike Joseph says, “Selecting Rob for this role was an easy decision.  He is a proven leader with experience on the sales and content side of our business.  We also believe in promoting talent from within the company, so I’m proud to announce this move.”  In his previous role Rohr led the team responsible for producing and distributing news and information for WHIO-TV, the Dayton Daily News, country WHKO “K99.1” and news/talk WHIO-AM/FM, as well as the Springfield News-Sun and the Journal-News.

Benkiel Named Market Manager for Alpha Media’s Moberly-Macon, Missouri Stations.  Sales and management pro Mark Benkiel is named the market manager for Alpha Media’s  Moberly-Macon, Missouribenkielmark station group that includes country KRES, news/talk KWIX-AM/FM, Christian contemporary KTCM, and oldies KIRK.  Benkiel most recently was general sales manager for Cumulus Media’s Macon, Georgia station group.  Alpha Media EVP Midwest region George Pelletier says, “Mark brings a terrific level of enthusiasm and experience to the Alpha Moberly team.  He understands community broadcasting and will be a great addition to the Alpha pack.”

NextRadiochart1NextRadio Blog: The Reasons People Love Radio.  There’s a new blog series from NextRadio called “For the Love of Radio,” using its own data and information from Edison Research, aimed at advertisers and broadcasters that explains the reasons people love radio.  The first blog is focused on data from a study the company conducted with Edison Research.  The survey examined 2,094 online respondents and NextRadio says the data pointed to three key roles radio plays in the consumer marketplace today: radio portability, radio’s role in the community, and its fostering of musical connections.  Read the blog post here.

cbsradio logoCBS RADIO Dips 2% in First Quarter.  When CBS Corp. delivers its quarterly financial reports, the focus is on television and this first quarter of 2016 is no different.  As a whole, the revenue for the first quarter was $3.85 billion – an increase of 10%.  But looking at radio – which is part of the company’s Local Broadcasting division – net revenue was down 2%.  As for the status of the radio division, CEO Les Moonves and CFO Joseph Ianniello reiterated what’s been said publicly over the past few months: The company is pursuing making CBS RADIO a separate, publicly traded company and, at the same time, is listening to any offers to divest of some or all of the stations if it can do so in a tax-friendly manner.

iheartmedia logo smalliHeartMedia Reports Q1 Revenue Up 6%.  Compared to the same period a year ago, revenue for the iHeartMedia division of iHeartCommunications Inc. increased $41.1 million – a jump of 6%.  The company says the hike was “driven primarily by increases in our core radio business, both broadcast and digital, including the impact of trade and barter and political advertising revenues, driven in part by our live events, as well as increases in our traffic and weather business.  Revenue also increased in our syndication business driven by growth in our news/talk format.  Trade and barter includes the impact of marketing partnerships with our advertisers on live events, as well as revenue recognized in connection with advertising services provided during the quarter in connection with investments made in the fourth quarter of 2015 in certain non-public companies.”

beasley logoBeasley Broadcast Group Q1 Revenue Rises 13.2% on Strength of New Tampa and Charlotte Properties.  The net revenue for the first quarter was $27.5 million – an increase of 13.2% — that is largely the result of its late 2014 station swap with CBS RADIOBeasley Broadcast Group traded five stations in Philadelphia and Miami for 13 outlets in Tampa and Charlotte (and one AM in Philly).  Interim CEO Caroline Beasley (who also serves as EVP/CFO) comments,beasleycaroline “While 2016 first quarter revenue included the cyclical return of political advertising, we generated organic revenue growth even without the political spending.  In addition, we achieved our goal of our clusters, on a combined basis, outperforming the markets that report to Miller Kaplan for the full quarter and expect this trend to continue in 2016.”  Beasley also notes that the company paid down $3 million against its debt, leaving the remaining debt standing at $86 million.  She adds, “We intend to continue our use of cash from operations to further reduce debt, pay quarterly cash dividends and to pursue other opportunities to enhance shareholder value and during the first quarter declared our tenth consecutive quarterly cash dividend.”

todayscomedyEnvision Networks Debuts ‘Today’s Comedy Network.’  The new comedy radio service from Envision Networks is called “Today’s Comedy Network,” and the company says it’s a “turnkey continuous comedy format for radio 24/7/365,” featuring “non-stop blocks of jokes and one-liners from the best comedians.  This fast-paced, safe-for-work and in-the-car comedy fits perfectly for today’s radio listener.”  Envision adds it’s “the first one that crosses all lines of income, ethnicity, education and gender.  By using easily customizable distribution, affiliates can personalize the station to their own market with content, personalities, and contests.  In addition to the informative host, each week a different comedian serves as the special guest host every hour for the entire broadcast week.  Listeners will hear tracks from their latest release and inside stories about their travels, friends and insights about comedy.”  Regular comics will include: George Carlin, Jim Gaffigan, Jeff Foxworthy, Christopher Titus, Brian Regan, Maria Bamford, Patton Oswalt, Bill Engvall, Eddie Izzard, Lewis Black, Gabriel Iglesias, Louis C. K., Ron White, Kathleen Madigan and many more.  Envision president and CEO Danno Wolkoff says, “‘Today’s Comedy’ provides the best experience for radio stations to offer their listeners.  The format provides the broadest demographic appeal in the crowded talk format arena and most of all; it’s very, very FUNNY!”

podcastone bDr. Drew and Adam Carolla Renew Chemistry with PodcastOne Show.  For years, Dr. Drew Pinsky and Adam Carolla worked side-by-side on the nationally syndicated (and recently cancelled) radio show “Loveline.”  Now, Carolla and Dr. Drew are back together for a daily podcast titled “Adam & Drew” on the PodcastOne platform.  PodcastOne chairman and CEO Norm Pattiz says, “Adam and Drew, together again, five days a week – this time on PodcastOne. There’s really not much more that needs to be said.  Who said you can’t go home again?”

gamratcindyWFDF, Detroit Adds Second Former State Rep. for Weekly Show.  The station, being operated by Kevin Adell, brings former Michigan State Rep. Cindy Gamrat aboard to host a weekly, Thursday program.  Gamrat’s joining the station comes not long after former State Rep. Todd Courser also began hosting a show on the station.  Both Gamrat and Courser are facing felony and misdemeanor charges for alleged misconduct for trying to hide their romantic relationship while in office.  Both are married.  The Detroit News reports that Gamrat is taking on the new duties against her attorney’s advice.  Both Gamrat and Courser face potential prison sentences for their alleged misconduct in hiding their affair.

joycebrianFirstPitchJoyce Provides Color on Talk Radio Night in Chattanooga.  WGOW-FM, Chattanooga early afternoon talk host Brian Joyce (left) poses for a pic with Chattanooga Lookouts play-by-play man Larry Ward (right) in the booth at AT&T Field.  Joyce threw out the first pitch at the AA baseball club’s recent game against the Montgomery Biscuits on what the team dubbed “Talk Radio Night.”  He says he was honored to be able to join Ward in the booth to do some color commentary.  Joyce – a Division I college baseball player at Davidson College – reports that, unlike so many first pitches by celebrities, his was a perfect strike!

franklinchipChip Franklin Named Midday Host at KGO, San Francisco.  The next step in returning KGO to its talk roots from the newsy experiment that began a few years ago comes as Chip Franklin takes over the 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm slot beginning December 8.  Franklin has had long talk radio stints – most recently with KOGO, San Diego from 2007 to 2013 and with WBAL, Baltimore from 1999 to 2007 – and is also working writing position pieces and prep for guests on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” “Good Morning kgo logo newAmerica” and “Face the Nation.”  He also regularly appears at comedy clubs across the U.S.  On his new gig, Franklin comments, “The current narrative is that San Francisco is all liberals, progressives and Democrats mixed in with the occasional 4.9.  Maybe, but I see it more as a city that simply embraces freedom and more to the point, the free expression of ideas regardless of ideology.  Whether it’s politics, art, music or comedy, it all starts with a passion for discovery – discovery of life here in the Bay area, the wider world, and our inner lives.”  Cumulus Media EVP of content and programming John Dickey says, “KGO strives to inform and entertain the Bay Area with relevant news and compelling talk hosted by big personalities.  Chip Franklin’s point of view, intelligence and wit are going to drive some amazing conversations on KGO.”

Odds & Sods.  WABC, New York and CBS “Inside Edition” special correspondent Rita Cosby celebrated her 50th birthday hosting a special benefit for the Wounded Warriors Project at the Hotel Edison in New York City recently. crosbybednareksmall Among the 1,000-plus guests and celebs attending the fundraiser were fellow WABC personalities Curtis Sliwa and Geraldo Rivera.  Cosby is pictured here in this photo, (courtesy of Nicole Vranjican), with Broadway’s Tomaczek Bednarek at the event.  Read more about the party here…..WPGG, Atlantic City talk show host Harry Hurley is named to the PolitickerNJ’s “2014  Power List.”  This is the eighth time Hurley – morning personality on the Townsquare Media news/talk station – has been named to the list…..Chicago media writer Robert Feder reports that Tribune’s WGN, Chicago adds former Sun-Times columnist and critic Dave Hoekstra who will host his weekly “Evening Journal” radio program on the station beginning in December.  The program will air Saturday evenings.

sportsfixWTEM‘Sports Fix’ Celebrates Five Years on WTEM, Washington.  Washington, DC midday sports talk show “The Sports Fix” with Kevin Sheehan and Thom Loverro is celebrating its fifth anniversary on Red Zebra Broadcasting’s WTEM “ESPN 980.”  The station says the program “has been a ratings leader, achieving #1-ratings in its time slot throughout the five-year run.”  Vice president of programming Chuck Sapienza adds, “‘The Sports Fix’ has been a constant performer.  Kevin, Thom and producer Marc Sterne perform at a high level every day and it shows in their consistency and ratings success.”

ccsatClear Channel Satellite Services to Serve iHeartMedia Only.  In a story by Leslie Stimson at Radio World, iHeartMedia, the parent company of Clear Channel Satellite Services, is informing clients that it will no longer provide satellite services to non-iHeartMedia operators.  Contracts currently existing will be honored until they expire and the company will not accept new ones.  A memo from CCSS reads, in part: “In the coming weeks, our team will be working with the existing customers to discuss the best way for a smooth transition to a new provider.  Customers with soon-expiring contracts will have the option to continue their service on a month-to-month basis until we’ve found a suitable assignee for the business.”

scba logoOctober Revenue Gains Reported in Los Angeles, San Diego. According to Miller Kaplan Arase‘s October summary report, Los Angeles posted increases of 3% for local spot and nearly double that (5.7%) for national spot.  Meanwhile, San Diego was +1.3% local spot and a substantially higher +18% for national spot.  Southern California Broadcasters Association president Thom Callahan comments, “Our entire region produced a very robust October as the critical fourth quarter began.  The sluggish third quarter performance we had is a distant memory, as advertisers once againcallahanthom looked to Southern California radio for increased market share and real revenue results.  Our combined market growth in October should set the stage for a dramatic and positive finish for [fourth quarter] and 2014.  Our members’ efforts to provide proactive solutions to client challenges really came together in October.  We see enormous positive energy in our markets and our continued regional focus on radio’s ROI is making a difference for all of our member sales teams.”  Revenue in the “NTR/Network/Other” category improved last month by a whopping (approximately) 63% in Los Angeles and 26.3% in San Diego.  October’s total market revenue for Los Angeles was 7.1%, while San Diego’s was 8.8%. Year-to-date total market revenue though is -2.2% (Los Angeles) and 2.9% (San Diego).
