LAST DAY! TALKERS News Notes. At Cumulus Media’s sports talk WHLD-AM, Buffalo “1270 AM The Fan,” the local Jerry Sullivan show is cancelled, leaving the 9:00 am to 12:00 noon show to be replaced by syndicated programming from CBS Sports Radio.  Sullivan announced the end of his show via Twitter, saying, “The radio show went off the air today for a lack of financial support.  Thanks to anyone who listened on ‘1270 The Fan’ over the last 18 months.  Buffalo needs an alternative voice more than ever.”…..Marc Kestecher signs a new contract to continue serving as ESPN Radio’s lead NBA play-by-play voice.  ESPN says that in addition to NBA duties, Kestecher will call a “full slate of NFL, college football, college basketball and host studio coverage for marquee events.  Kestecher says, “I’m so grateful to continue my play-by-play and host role with ESPN Radio, working with some of the best people in the industry.  From basketball to football to baseball, this job continues to challenge and reward me in so many ways.”

Presidential Race/Iowa Caucus/Voting Integrity Top News/Talk Story for Week of February 3-7. San Diego morning radio couple Rob and Joss Taylor (below) move from Entercom’s adult contemporary KYXY to the company’s sister classic hits KXSN “Sunny 98.1,” beginning February 24.  The “Mornings with Rob & Joss” show will air weekdays from 5:00 am to 9:00 am.  Entercom San Diego SVP and market manager Karyn Cerulli says, “Rob and Joss possess an incredible work ethic and dedication to their show and the San Diego community.  Over the last year, they have built strong connections with their audience and we’re excited to continue to watch them grow.  Their fun, upbeat personalities will shine on ‘Sunny 98.1.’”…..Cumulus Media’s adult contemporary WRRM-FM, Cincinnati “Warm 98.5” names Gina Ferraro midday personality.  Ferraro comes to Cumulus from iHeartMedia’s Dayton hot AC WMMX-FM.  Cumulus Cincinnati RVP and market manager Dave Crowl says, “We are excited to have Gina join the Cincinnati and WRRM team.  She has sound knowledge of the listening audience base in Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and the corridor heading north of Cincy towards Dayton.  We look forward to her contributions.”  Ferraro takes over the midday show after Race Taylor left to join WCBS-FM, New York last July…..In Erie, programming pro Vinnie Marino is named program director for Cumulus Media’s adult contemporary WXKC-FM and hip hop WXKC-HD2/W282BR “104.3 The Vibe.”  He was previously on air at Press Communications’ classic rock WWZY-FM, Long Branch, New Jersey “The Boss 107.1.”  Cumulus Erie VP and market manager Chuck Poet says, “We are really excited to have Vinny join the Cumulus Erie team.  Vinny’s numerous media experiences in different forms of radio and other media make him the top choice to bring a fresh perspective to the entire Erie cluster.”…..Dayton air personality Aaron “Woody” Woods moves from Alpha Media’s sports talk WING-AM across town to Cox Media Group’s country WHKO “K99.1” to serve as morning drive co-host alongside morning personality and station PD Nancy Wilson.

WTMJ, Milwaukee’s Charlie Sykes Questions Talk Radio’s Role in Creating Fact-Challenged Constituency.  In a Twitter post promoting his upcoming piece on conservative media that contains comments from WTMJ, Milwaukee talk show host Charlie Sykes, Business Insider writer Oliver Darcy reveals some frank thoughts from the air personality about talk radio’s role in growing a listener base that doesn’t believe anysykescharlie mainstream media outlet can be trusted to check the facts.  With regard to the presidential campaign of Donald Trump (whom Sykes famously challenged on air during the primary race), Sykes says Trump can say anything without fear of being investigated by a source talk listeners will trust.  Sykes says that although he believes there is bias against conservatives in the mainstream media, he wonders if the business insiderconstant drumbeat of conservative media people railing against liberal bias hasn’t had an unintended consequence.  For example, Sykes expresses his frustration dealing with his listeners to Darcy, “…it is impossible for me to say that, ‘By the way, you know it’s false.’ And they’ll say, ‘Why? I saw it on Allen B. West.’ Or they’ll say, ‘I saw it on a Facebook page.’ And I’ll say, ‘The New York Times did a fact check.’  And they’ll say, ‘Oh, that’s The New York Times.  That’s bullsh*t.’  There’s nobody – you can’t go to anybody and say, ‘Look here are the facts.’ And I have to say that’s one of the disorienting realities of this political year.”  Sykes is quoted saying he has to ask himself, “To what extent did I contribute?”  It’s not clear when Business Insider will publish Darcy’s entire story.

ruizlizHoF16KTSA, San Antonio’s Elizabeth Ruiz Inducted into SA Radio HoF.  KTSA, San Antonio news personality Elizabeth Ruiz was inducted into the San Antonio Radio Hall of Fame on Sunday (8/14).  Ruiz (pictured here at Sunday’s induction) is a member of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame, Edgewood Hall of Fame, and Fiesta San Antonio’s Order of the Cascaron.  Alpha Media operations director Greg Martin says, “Liz has been a credible voice in San Antonio for more than 30 years.  Beyond her news credibility, Liz is also known for her charitable work around San Antonio having emceed hundreds of community events throughout the years.”

The Presidential Race, Milwaukee Protests, NYC Imam Murder, PA AG Case, Russia-Iran Military Relationship, Rio Olympics-Gabby Douglas Controversy, and MLB Action Among Top News/Talk Stories Yesterday (8/15).  The activities of presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, including House Republicans’ perjury allegations against Clinton; the ongoing violence and protests in Milwaukee after the shooting death of a black suspect by police; the murder of an NYC imam and his assistant; the guilty verdict against Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane; the military relationship between Russia and Iran as the former uses Iranian air bases to strike Syrian rebel targets; the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and the social media attacks on U.S. gymnast Gabby Douglas; and Major League Baseball action were some of the most-talked-about stories on news/talk radio yesterday, according to ongoing research from TALKERS magazine.

espnradiologoESPN Radio Announces NBA Broadcasts.  Over the course of the 2016-17 NBA season, ESPN Radio will broadcast 28 regular season games, starting with the defending NBA Champion Cleveland Cavaliers hosting the New York Knicks on Opening Night (10/25).  ESPN Radio will also broadcast All-Star Game events plus playoffs and the NBA Finals.  This season, games are also being made available via the ESPN app.  Marc Kestecher makes his debut as the primary play-by-play voice, alongside analyst Jon Barry, with P.J. Carlesimo and Kara Lawson returning for select games.

cheadlePSAEntercom to Launch Don Cheadle-Voiced $1 Million PSA Campaign.  This campaign is part of Entercom Communications’ 1Thing initiative.  The company is launching a nationwide PSA campaign on behalf of the Environmental Defense Fund equal to $1 million worth of free airtime.  The company says the PSA features Academy Award-nominated actor Don Cheadle discussing the importance of stabilizing the global climate for our children and grandchildren.  The PSAs will run across 124 of Entercom’s stations in 27 markets in the country beginning this month.   Cheadle says, “I’m happy to help introduce more people to the great work of EDF.  We’re in the fight of our lives against climate change and EDF has been a real leader in that struggle.  So I hope this helps.”
