“Shane Spencer” Prankster Dupes Albany Sports Station. Use – and alleged use – of performing enhancing drugs (PEDs) by MLB players has had ramifications and fallout on several stations within the past week. Ex-big leaguer Jack Clark lost his short-lived job as a WGNU, St. Louis sports talk host when adamantly insisting Albert Pujols took steroids when he (Pujols) played for the St. Louis Cardinals. Pujols denied the allegations, and threatened legal action against Clark and WGNU, with Clark getting the boot. This past Monday (8/12), a caller to Townsquare Media owned-WTMM, Albany “ESPN 104.5 FM The Team” claimed to be former Yankees (1998 – 2002) and Mets (2004) outfielder Shane Spencer. The caller told 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm host Mike Lindsley that he “dabbled” with steroids in his MLB playing days. Trouble is the person was not Spencer. Wanting to clear his name, Spencer, currently in the independent Atlantic League, where he is the hitting instructor/third base coach for the Somerset Patriots says, “I did not participate in any such interview. Someone called into the station claiming to be me and spoke on my behalf regarding some very sensitive topics surrounding baseball.” The Spencer impersonator spoke about topics ranging from steroids to Spencer’s time with the Yankees. “I am outraged that someone would do this and at the same time disappointed that the station believed it to be me despite not coming from the contact information they had for me,” Spencer states. “It is very disappointing that someone was able to go on the air as me and speak for me about these topics.” WTMM acknowledged the mistake with a website posting yesterday (8/13). “The real interview [with Shane Spencer] was scheduled to take place in advance and was set-up through the official Major League Baseball Players Association.” The genuine Spencer, who also played briefly for the Indians and Rangers, did do a WTMM station interview and remarked, “I do a lot of stuff at Yankee Stadium. I work with kids. I am a good role model. To see how this might affect me is very disappointing – I’m going to make sure that I clear my name.”
Radio One Q2 Revenue Improves By 13%. The company reports that its second quarter net revenue is $119.6 million, which is up from $105.3 million one year ago. Station operating income rose 10.4% to $45.7 million, while operating income was $18.4 million. The company posted a net loss of $14.2 million (29 cents per share), versus earnings of $42.7 million (85 cents) in 2012. Radio One president/chief operating officer Alfred Liggins comments, “Radio advertising markets have been choppy, with a slowdown in June that took our core radio revenues from low single-digit positive to a -0.6% finish. July core radio station net revenue was +5.0% and Q3 is currently pacing up low single-digits.”

MMG Radio Network-produced and Radio America-syndicated “Pet Show” host Warren Eckstein was among the team of pet experts who helped develop and produce “DogTV” content. “I knew sooner or later it would come that I’d share my remote with my dog – and that’s a good thing,” Eckstein jokes. He has devoted over 25 years to teaching pets and their owners to live happily together through his unique approach to behavior, care, and training.

Bid4Spots: Auction an Alternative to Unsold Inventory. In a piece published today (7/23), TALKERS managing editor and West Coast bureau chief Mike Kinosian profiles Dave Newmark’s successful Bid4Spots digital auction initiative. There was a time when numerous players were getting into the
business of using the internet to deal with unsold inventory on radio stations. Dave Newmark tells Mike Kinosian why the others failed and how he struggled to find the right business model that would eventually lead to success. It was during a casual conversation with a software developer when he had an epiphany. “I immediately thought of those ad exchanges and I realized what they all had wrong. They had the supply and demand equation backwards. Forward auctions work well only when the demand is high and the supply is low. If I could figure out when demand would be at its lowest point – when regular airtime buyers were pretty much gone from the store – it would be as close to ‘next week’ as possible.” Newmark’s road to success was not a smooth one. In this fascinating piece he details his trials and tribulations. He also explains why stations and advertisers are happy with his model of moving unsold inventory. Read it all here.
Are You a Thinker or a Feeler? More importantly, are your listeners and callers thinkers or feelers? In a new TALKERS column posted today (7/23) by branding specialist Dr. John Tantillo, he states that understanding the difference between these two approaches to the issues of the day can have an impact on your show and determine how effectively you orchestrate discussions of them on the air. Using the examples of the current Zimmerman verdict and Rolling Stone cover controversy, Dr. Tantillo examines the relationship between branding and controversy pointing out that the most important thing to focus upon is how the controversy directly impacts the customer’s (or fan’s) loyalty to the brand and nobody else’s. He says we should be less concerned about public relations and more interested in “targeted relations.” To read the entire column, please click here.

MEDIA BROKER SPOTLIGHT: Mark Jorgenson of Jorgenson Broadcast Brokerage. In this week’s installment of Media Broker Spotlight, Sandi Bergman of RadioTVDeals.com interviews media broker Mark Jorgenson of
Jorgenson Broadcast Brokerage of Greenville, South Carolina. Jorgenson was a 12-year veteran of television sales and radio ownership in Southeastern markets before deciding that he liked putting deals together better than he did operating stations. He says, “I enjoy matching people up with great opportunities and that’s what the brokerage business is all about.” Jorgenson describes today’s radio station market as “sluggish due to a lack of capital to finance deals.” He says, “There are plenty of potential buyers and even more potential sellers but without institutional financing to make the deals happen, we won’t see the volume of transactions we’ve seen in the past. Brokers have to be creative and persistent to make deals happen in today’s financial climate.” He continues, “There are even radio deals where some portion of the purchase price might be handled with a seller note. The key is for the buyer to have access to at least some cash. Private investors, family, and friends are the most likely source to finance new ventures these days.” To read the entire installment of Media Broker Spotlight, please click here.

The Ticking of the Clock
By Michael Harrison
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. –– Here are 10 things broadcasters need to know about the enormous changes taking place in talk radio at this very moment, working our way from #10 to #1 in order of importance:
10) Industry conferences need to be downsized and regionalized. Although there are still some good ones –– including TALKERS’ long-running New Media Seminar –– the day of the three-day, high-cost, national radio convention is clearly coming to an end –– at least for the foreseeable future. The average broadcaster cannot afford the high cost of registration and travel to these events, nor the commitment of time that they demand. Sadly, nor can most players in the sponsor pool. Regional conferences that take place within a single day (eliminating the need for hotel lodging) and are affordable to the industry’s workforce –– exposed nationally by digital audio and video –– will and should be the wave of the future. The forthcoming “Los Angeles Regional Talkers Forum” being presented by TALKERS in association with the Los Angeles Press Club set for October 20 is an example of this new kind of industry gathering. We are putting our money where our mouth is. This event is free.
