pinchjonPinch Postpones Retirement. Apparently, you can hold off buying a gold watch for Jon Pinch a bit longer. Cumulus‘ 14-year executive vice president and chief operating officer was scheduled to call it quits in late-November, but the company is installing him as market manager for its six-station Atlanta cluster.  Cumulus president and chief executive officer Lew Dickey comments, “Jon is the consummate team player and will now be contributing in this new role. We are excited to have someone with his loyalty, talent, and experience leading our terrific team in Atlanta.”  Pinch remarks that he is “honored” to lead “these great stations at this important juncture in the company’s growth.  This makes perfect sense for the stations and for me – personally and professionally – so retirement will have to wait.  To say that the position amounts to downshifting for me sounds almost comical.  The lifestyle change, with far less travel, allows me to spend my time at home in Atlanta and continue to work in the industry I love.  It is the best of both worlds.  I am thrilled to work with the incredible team in place at our Atlanta stations to drive the continued growth of these vibrant radio brands.”  The position has been open since April when Cumulus promoted Jeff Brown to corporate senior vice president.  Cumulus’ Atlanta cluster consists of country WKHX “Kicks 101.5,” WNNX “Rock 100.5,” CHR WWWQ “Q-100,” country WWWQ-HD2 “Nash Icon 98.9″; news WYAY “News Radio 106.7,” and WWWQ-HD3.

borrel lmktserv graphicBorrell Associates Study Highlights the Cost to Small and Medium Businesses of Digital Marketing.  A study released today by Borrell Associates called the 2014 Digital Marketing Services Outlook focuses on the dollars spent by small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in America on digital marketing.  This is relevant to radio inasmuch as it shines a light on what it really takes – in dollars – to support digital marketing that both competes with radio’s traditional on-air advertising and the digital marketing that is also offered by broadcasting companies.  For instance, we often jump to the conclusion that digital advertising is less expensive – no transmitter needed, no printing press and mailing system – but as the Borrell study estimates, SMBs spend three of every five marketing dollars on digital marketing services for a national total of $501 billion this year.  The study also concludes, “In fact, when it comes to what the typical local business spends on digital marketing, only 13% goes toward classic forms of online advertising such as banners, paid search or video.  More than two-thirds of what they spend goes toward managing their digital media channels.  The rest goes toward “promotions” — or all those creative activities such as contests, giveaways, coupons and two-for-one deals that flow from their newfound marketing finesse.”  Note the Borrell graphic here laying out the industry’s digital media services expenditures.  See more about the Borrell study here.

A study commissioned by Katz Media Group shows swing voters are regular radio users – 81% of those identified as swing voters report listening to AM/FM radio regularly. Moreover, voters across the political spectrum report that radio ads are more credible than the ads they see on the internet by a 56-35 margin, which increases to a 62-38 margin among low-turnout voters. The survey was handled by Vox Populi Polling to examine how much influence radio has in the electoral marketplace. The sample size for the survey was voxpopulipolling logo1,059 active voters. nielsen logoNielsen Study Reports Radio Listening at ‘All-Time High’; Hispanic and African America Audience Makes Up Almost 30%.  In its quarterly State of the Media: Audio Today report, Nielsen concludes radio listening in the United States reached an all-time high with 244 million Americans listening to the radio each week – that’s 92% of all Americans 12-plus.  But this report dives into the numbers of Hispanic and African American listeners.  The increase in total 12+ cume for each demographic was not dramatic – Hispanic listening went up 1.4% from last March to this, and African American listening rose just 0.6% during the same period.  But the report notes interesting conclusions about usage.  For example, the top daypart for listening by Hispanics is the midday 10:00 am to 3:00 pm and the average time spent with radio each week is 12 hours and 13 minutes.  For African Americans, midday is also the top daypart for listening and the time spent with radio each averages 12 hours and 10 minutes.  Check out the study here.

clippers logoSponsors Quickly React to Less-Than-Sterling Remarks.  Fallout over racist comments attributed to Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling continues, as CarMax, Kia, State Farm, and Virgin America pull advertising support from the NBA team.  According to a CarMax official, “These views [by Sterling] directly conflict with CarMax’s culture of respect for all individuals.  While we have been a proud Clippers sponsor for nine years and support the team, fans and community, these statements necessitate that CarMax end its sponsorship.”  A Kia official states, “Comments allegedly made by Clippers owner Donald Sterling are offensive and reprehensible.  They are inconsistent with our views and values.  We are suspending our advertising and sponsorship activations with the Clippers.  Meanwhile, as fans of the game of basketball, our support of the players and the sport is unwavering.”  Two high-profile Clippers players are spokespersons for two of those advertisers: NBA Players’ Association president Chris Paul for State Farm and Blake Griffin for Kia.  A State Farm representative notes that, “The remarks attributed to the Clippers’ owner are offensive.  While those involved sort out the facts, we will be taking a pause in our relationship with the organization.  We are monitoring the situation and we will continually assess our options.  We have a great relationship with Chris Paul and will continue supporting the ‘Born to Assist’ advertising campaign involving Chris and now other NBA players.”  The Clippers on Sunday lost game four of its playoff series to the Golden State Warriors.  It was the highest-rated game of the playoffs so far (ABC-TV), registering a 5.0 overnight rating.  In San Francisco (the Warriors play in Oakland), the game had a 9.8, the third-highest-rated first round game on any network in more than a decade.

joycebrianWGOW, Chattanooga Talk Host Brian Joyce Gets Facebook Suspension; Station Won’t Discipline.  According to a story at Nooga.com, management at Cumulus Media-owned news/talk WGOW, Chattanooga will not discipline “Live and Local” show host Brian Joyce after he was suspended from his Facebook account after posting what’s being termed a satirical comment relative to the George Zimmerman-Trayvon Martin case.  The story indicated Joyce was flagged by a Facebook friend after posting the following:  “Come to think of it, I’m not so sure Hitler was a bad guy.  He wasn’t killing Jews, he was simply defending himself and his people against the Jews.  He said so himself on many occasions.  Granted the Jews had never done anything to Hitler, but then again Trayvon Martin had never done anything to George Zimmerman.  This is not murder, it’s not manslaughter.  Heck, it’s not even assault with a deadly weapon!  It’s self-defense. So how come Hitler gets such a bad rap?  If it weren’t for race baiters like the Jews, we probably never even would have heard of Adolph Hitler.”  WGOW program director Kevin West told Nooga.com he and Joyce discussed the matter.  “We had a conversation and emphasized that most people aren’t going to understand satire.  Some people just think literally.  I do want to stress that in no way does Brian Joyce believe Hitler was a good man.”

LOS ANGELESUse the word “creative” in a radio context and the first thing generally summoned up is a programmer spinning a different take on a music format, or as an application to that extremely rare, exceptional on-air personality who is capable of generating substantial buzz.

Infrequently though is it linked in a word-association game to commercials, which is not only distressing, but highly unfortunate since creative commercial content can be a strong attribute.
