nielsen-meter nielsen_logo-2Nielsen Audio Acknowledges Connectivity Issues. Clients were informed yesterday (Thursday, 11/10) that 8% of installed Nielsen Audio devices across its 48 PPM-markets became inactive. The situation began in week one (11/3 – 11/9) of the December PPM monthly survey. According to a Nielsen spokesperson, “Our panel relations specialists have already been in contact with these homes and all affected panelists have now been sent new PPMs; 49% of the replacement meters are back online. We expect the balance to come online in the next several days.” The spokesperson further notes, “We forecast the percentage of installed and fully operational meters eligible for in-tab will be 97% for the month of December and 92% for week one of December across the aggregate of markets; weighting will adjust for demographic and geographic imbalances.” Lower in-tab, the spokesperson stresses, “doesn’t equate to lower ratings; however, temporarily higher weights may contribute to more variation during the period of time it takes for these panelists to be back in-tab.” Nielsen Audio is doing an analysis to evaluate panel representation and impact to audience estimates and the company plans to share those results during the week of November 21.

The company’s senior vice president of sales since late last year – Bob Philips – is elevated to CBS Radio‘s newly created role of chief revenue officer. CBS Radio president Andre Fernandez states, “Bob’s extensive radio and sales experience make him ideal to accelerate our efforts as we enter a new phase of the business. His deep understanding of corporate, customer, category, and channelcbs-radio-logo strategies will be instrumental in generating new revenue opportunities and ensuring our ability to deliver top-tier financial results.” Philips opines, “It is an exciting time for the radio industry. We have never had more assets at our disposal to meet our clients’ needs and extend their iconic brands. Our radio stations, digital assets, and events are only the tip of the iceberg.” Philips, who currently serves on the RAB Advisory Board and is an officer for the Maryland-D.C.-Delaware Broadcasters Association, previously was the 15-year market manager of CBS Radio’s four-station Baltimore cluster, which includes adult contemporary WLIF “Today’s 101.9,” hot AC WWMX “Mix 106.5,” and sports outlets WJZ-AM, and WJZ-FM “105.7 The Fan.” He has held leadership positions at Infinity Broadcasting and American Radio Systems.

SiriusXM Adds Ramsey. Starting next Monday (11/14), SiriusXM subscribers get to hear financial advice via “The Dave Ramsey Show” on Sirius channel 145 and XM channel 207. According to SiriusXM senior vice president of digital, talk and content strategy Jason Schramm, “Dave Ramsey is a huge force in the world of personal money management and a significant addition to SiriusXM. Between his immensely popular program and dave-ramsey-colo-springs-300x196bestselling books, Dave has proven himself a top expert in his field. I am thrilled that he has found a second home at SiriusXM, where our subscribers will now be able to get direct feedback about their own finances.” Ramsey Media vice president Brian Mayfield comments, “We are honored and excited to join the SiriusXM family. We are looking forward to experiencing the future growth of this platform and its audience.” Speaking of Ramsey, he sold out his “Smart Money” event yesterday (Thursday, 11/10) in Colorado Springs, where he promoted the event with his affiliate there, News-Press & Gazette Company‘s KRDO. The station’s general sales manager JoAnne Rowley notes, “A Dave Ramsey live event creates a lot of excitement for our audience, advertisers, staff, and attendees. Joining Bonneville Seattle talker KIRO-FM in the “Beds for Kids Project” are the Seattle Police Department, with the support of the Seattle Police Foundation, and Sleep Train. KIRO-FM afternoon drive (3:00 pm – 7:00 pm) hosts “Ron & Don” have been dedicated advocates for the project since its inception twobeds-for-kids years ago, with Ron Upshaw stating, “I am really excited about this opportunity. The thought of a young person not having a bed just breaks my heart. Think about a six-year-old or seven-year-old kid never sleeping in a bed. This will be the first time they ever have their own bed. That’s a big deal for a kid, so I’m very proud to be a partner of this really great event.” Semi-trucks filled with 300 mattresses, box springs, sheet sets, comforters, and pillows were delivered to the Seattle Police Department yesterday (Thursday, 11/10); all mattresses were donated by The Dream Bed. Selected area families will receive their new beds tomorrow (Saturday, 11/12). Seattle police officers Jeremy Wade and Ryan Gallagher created the “Beds for Kids Project” in 2014. Seattle’s latest (October 2016) Nielsen Audio PPM report finds KIRO-FM finishing second (5.7, 6+) behind Hubbard CHR KQMV (6.9, 6+).

They have already taken numerous syndicated radio shows, podcasts, and a series of educational classes on various subjects and made them available to consumers through the nation’s libraries, bookstores, and over a dozen online merchandisers as well as Blackstone’s own site www.downpour.com. They invite hosts, stations and syndicators to look through old show archives, current shows and podcasts – including anything from health to automobiles – for consideration.  The path is open to content not previously believed to be audio book possible. TagStation Names Burney National Sales Director. National account executive of iHeartMedia Detroit Mary Burney joins TagStation LLC, the parent of NextRadio, as national sales director. NextRadio vice president of sales Tom Doran comments, “Mary is a perfect fit for this position because she understands broadcast radio consumption, and national advertisers’ need for real time campaign performance. Mary is known for establishing relationships with key decision-makers at national brands and their agencies. The new position of national sales director comes as we are seeing rapid growth in demand for our campaign data. NextRadio data brings detailed insights to advertising campaign effectiveness, helping brands make data-driven decisions about radio buys. westwood-one-nfl“Stable” Audiences for NFL National Radio Broadcasts. The network radio partner for the National Football League, Cumulus Media‘s Westwood One, analyzed ratings for the first 13 games in each PPM local market where a national broadcast aired. It found adult 25-54 AQH radio ratings for 13 national primetime NFL games that aired during the September 8 – October 5 PPM survey period are down on average 3.5% compared to corresponding broadcasts a year ago. Factoring out the September 26 national NFL broadcast that ran opposite the first presidential debate, however, the 12-game average NFL radio rating change on Westwood One was -1.3%. According to Nielsen, almost as many people have tuned into NFL games on television this season as last season. A Westwood spokesperson writes, “Time spent watching the NFL on TV might be off due to the election coverage, but the NFL continues to be America’s most powerful media property. Recent radio ratings further showcase the power of NFL programming for advertisers to engage fans. The NFL on Westwood One provides incremental reach and enhanced campaign frequency to TV campaigns.”

limbaughrushLimbaugh on WPHT: ‘It’s a Talent-Driven Business…’  Rush Limbaugh doesn’t do a lot of appearances on affiliate stations these days but his (and fellow Premiere Networks star Sean Hannity’s) return to CBS Radio’s WPHT,wphtlogo Philadelphia this month was cause to appear on the WPHT morning show with host Chris Stigall to talk about his return and the state of the news/talk product.  When Stigall brought up that there’s controversy in the industry over the notion political news/talk radio is a dying format, Limbaugh asked, “Who says that? Is it consultants?…That’s the wrong instruction to give people.  Do a good show!…What I told the affiliates at the NAB Radio Show was if people have to listen with two tin cans and a piece of string, they will if the show is good.”  Limbaugh said the concept of getting away from politics because the country’s tired of it is wrong.  “A – the country is not fed up with it.  A large and potentially huge audience is really engaged and fit to be tied and is waiting for either engagement, instruction, conflict, drama, what-have-you about it.  I don’t know who comes up with these ideas.”  Limbaugh says on-air talent have to be passionate about the topics.  “It’s a performers business; it’s a talent-driven business.”

gutierrezandresDave Ramsey and GLR Networks Team to Syndicate Andres Gutierrez Program.  Andres Gutierrez has been associated with nationally syndicated radio star Dave Ramsey since 2009 but now Ramsey’s company announces it is teaming up with GLR Networks to distribute Gutierrez’s personal finance program to the national Hispanic market.  The companies state, “This program is formatted to specifically target Mexican Regional stations and covers all current personal finance topics that affect the lives of today’s Latinos.  Such topics include: budgeting, debt elimination, buying a house, and the importance of retirement planning, among others.  GLR Networks VP of ad sales Luis Gutierrez states, “’The Andres Gutierrez Show’ will offer advertisers the opportunity to reach a new and growing audience enthusiastic about Andre’s unique approach to personal finance.”  Dave Ramsey show VP of broadcast Brian Mayfield adds, “We are excited about what the team at GLR Networks can provide for the future success of ‘The Andres Gutierrez Show.”’ Currently GLR Networks holds exclusive radio rights for Chivas de Guadalajara.  It also includes programs such as: “El Cucuy de la Mañana” con Renán Almendárez Coello, “Échate Pa’Cá” con Ana María Canseco, “Minuto 60,” “Neida Sandoval,” “Fútbol Liga Mexicana,” and “40 Principales.”

bellaviadavidWBEN, Buffalo Adds Iraq War Vet for Local Late Night Show.  Entercom news/talker WBEN, Buffalo “The Voice of Buffalo” adds another local program to its weekday lineup with the David Bellavia show airing from 10:00 pm to 1:00 am beginning October 21. Bellavia is a decorated Iraq War veteran who ran for United States Congress in Western New York inwben 2012.  He describes himself as an “unapologetic American, veteran advocate, and conservative Republican.”  Bellavia will also continue to fill-in during weekdays when veteran hosts Tom Bauerle, Sandy Beach and Rush Limbaugh are away.  Operations manager Tim Wenger states, “Our audience craves live and local talk.  David Bellavia has developed a great relationship with Buffalo radio listeners.  We couldn’t be more excited about David’s potential and this new program expands WBEN’s already powerful local reach.  The David Bellavia show once again highlights Entercom’s and WBEN’s continued commitment to provide Buffalo the best news/talk station and the very best in live and local programming.”

hannityseanSean Hannity to Jump to KSKY, Dallas in the New Year.  After the Sean Hannity program leaves Cumulus Media’s WBAP, Dallas at the end of December, there’s no more wondering if the Premiere Networks show will find akskylogo Dallas affiliate.  Salem-owned KSKY, Dallas announces it will pick up the show and air it live from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm CT.  Currently, local talk host Jon David Wells is heard during that daypart and he will move to an 8:00 pm start in January.  Salem VP/director of spoken word format Phil Boyce says, “After five years I am finally re-joined by the monster I helped create.  When the opportunity arose to place Sean on one of our top news/talk stations in Dallas I had to ask the question, ‘Are you kidding me?’  ‘660 AM The Answer’ has already substantially benefitted from hiring the popular Mark Davis from WBAP and Jon David Wells from KLIF.  We anticipate continued strong audience growth as we have experienced over the last year with the addition of Hannity to our excellent lineup of local and national hosts.”

cclogoClear Channel Adds Two to Political Strategy Department.  Will Leaverton and Brice Kornegay are joining Clear Channel Media and Entertainment as vice presidents of political strategy, effective immediately.  They will report directly to Nathan Daschle, EVP of political strategy and will be located in Washington, D.C.  The company states that “in these new positions, Leaverton and Kornegay will develop and execute ‘Go To Market’ strategies for various outlets in the political marketplace by utilizing Clear Channel Media and Entertainment’s local and national on air, digital, mobile, live event and outdoor assets in a targeted and powerful way.”  Clear Channel established the political strategy team in June of this year to focus on “working with political and issue advertisers and agencies to develop custom strategies that leverage the reach and power of Clear Channel.”  Leaverton most recently was field director for Bill Thompson’s New York mayoral campaign.  Prior to that, he served as the deputy national GOTV director for Obama for America, a committee liaison for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and a number of democratic campaigns in multiple states.  Kornegay was most recently president of BK Strategies, LLC a political consultancy firm.  He also served as a political field director and polling director for the Republican Governors Association, field representative for the National Republican Congressional Committee and worked on a number of campaigns in Oklahoma.

knssstevetedSteve McIntosh and Ted Woodward Celebrate 4,000 Morning Shows Together.  Entercom’s news/talk KNSS, Wichita celebrates the 4,000-show anniversary of morning duo Steve & Ted.  On Thursday, October 17, McIntosh and Woodward did their 4,000th program as Wichita’s longest-running morning show.  KNSS program  director Tony Duesing says, “One of the reasons Steve and Ted have been around all this time is because they have a great audience. They not only give the city of Wichita the very latest info, they are also fun to listen to.”  Steve McIntosh was inducted into the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2008.  In addition, both Steve McIntosh and Ted Woodward have won multiple awards from the K.A.B. Steve and Ted began broadcasting their morning radio show in the spring of 1998.

ramseyLA2013Ramsey Takes on Spokane and Los Angeles.  Nationally syndicated radio talk show host and New York Times best-selling author Dave Ramsey presented his new “Legacy Journey LIVE!” event to a full house in Spokane on Thursday, October 17.  Ramsey talked about how to win with money, strengthen marriages and lead your children with confidence.  His daughter, Rachel Cruze, joined Ramsey on stage.  Ramsey combined forces with local affiliate KXLY to promote this event.  PD Bud Nameck, says, “We are very excited to have Dave visit KXLY and Spokane!  Feedback from our listeners has been amazing since ‘The Dave Ramsey Show’ joined our line-up this summer.  It’s exciting to watch Dave interact with our listeners.”  Ramsey also hosted his “EntreLeadership 1 Day Event” in Los Angeles on Wednesday at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center.  Affiliate KFWB participated in the event.  KFWB market manager Valerie Blackburn states, “Dave Ramsey’s ‘EntreLeadership’ event was an incredible learning experience for the attendees.  Business owners, entrepreneurs and clients were all captivated by Dave’s passion and enthusiasm for leadership excellence.”  Pictured here at the Los Angeles event are: KFWB program director Andy Ludlum (second from left), Blackburn (second from right), Ramsey (third from right), and the KFWB sales team.

sliwacurtisCurtis Sliwa Named Inductee into NYSBA Hall of Fame.  WNYM, New York “AM 970 The Answer” personality Curtis Sliwa is being inducted into the New York State Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame at a ceremony on Thursday, November 7 at the Paley Center for Media in Manhattan.  Sliwa and WQHT, New York personality Funkmaster Flex are the only two radio broadcasters to be inducted this year.

hubbardbroadcastingHubbard to Buy 10 Sandusky Stations for $85.5 Million.  The deal gives Hubbard Radio five stations in the Phoenix market and five in Seattle.  It includes Phoenix outlets: classic rock KSLX, active rock KUPD, rock KDKB, oldies KAZG-AM, and sports talk KDUS-AM; and Seattle stations: standards, KIXI-AM, CHR KQMV, talk KKNW-AM, AC KRWM, alternative KLCK.  Hubbard board chair Ginny Morris says in a statement, “This is an exciting opportunity to expand Hubbard Radio into two top 20 markets.  We have known and respected the Rau/White family, Sandusky’s owners, for many years.  We admire what they have accomplished and we are honored that they would agree to sell us these established stations.  We are committed to maintaining the dedication to excellence and to community that Sandusky has made such an important part of their radio operations.”  This sale signals the end of the radio business interests for Sandusky as the company turns its total focus to its print and digital operations.  For Hubbard, it bumps the number of stations it will own from 20 to 30.  Hubbard president and CEO Bruce Reese says, “Hubbard is excited about the chance to add these great stations to our existing operations in Chicago, Washington, DC, Minneapolis/St. Paul, St. Louis and Cincinnati.  Sandusky runs very successful radio stations and we plan on continuing that precedent.  We look forward to working with our new colleagues.”

wmgc logoWait Is on to See if Greater Media Flips AC WMGC, Detroit to Sports Talk.  Rumors have been heard in Detroit for a few months now that Greater Media is considering a format flip to sports talk for moribund soft rock “Magic 105.”  Now, those rumors are getting hotter and Crain’s Detroit Business reports in a story by Bill wxyt-fm logoShea that sources say that switch could happen next month.  The publication notes that WMGC’s ratings have been in decline since longtime morning host Jim Harper retired 19 months ago.  But the switch would mean taking on CBS Radio’s highly rated WXYT-FM – no easy feat, even in a market most would consider a “sports town.”  Shea’s report cites insiders saying Greater Media is talking with former employee Drew Lane who – along with partner Mike Clark – were not renewed for the morning show at the company’s rock WRIF two months ago, although they had good ratings and enjoy excellent credibility in the market.  In his piece, Shea states that, “WXYT’s rating dominance is largely because it has the rights to air live all four of Detroit’s professional sports teams’ games.  The radio contracts for the Detroit Lions, Tigers, Red Wings and Pistons don’t expire until 2015, meaning it would be more than a year before a flipped WMGC could theoretically pursue and air pro games.”  Although the value of play-by-play is real, and there’s no doubt the combination of excellent talk show talent and game broadcasts is a winning formula, TALKERS would hesitate to say the station’s success is largely because of play-by-play.  Ultimately it’s all about revenue and rights to those games are very expensive while WXYT’s personalities and the advertising rates they command are extremely valuable to the station.

ramseydaveDave Ramsey Show Jumps to KXLY, Spokane.  Nationally syndicated financial talk star Dave Ramsey’s program moves to Queen B-owned news/talk outlet KXLY, Spokane after years on Clear Channel’s crosstown KQNT.  Dave Ramsey vice president of broadcast Brian Mayfield says, “We are excited to have the Dave Ramsey show as part of the lineup on KXLY in Spokane.  We are equally excited at the opportunity to partner with the team at Queen B Radio in bringing Dave to town with his latest ‘Legacy Journey Live Event’ on October 17.”  Premiere NetworksSean Hannity show is moved from KXLY to crosstown KQNT and KXLY Radio Group VP Brian Paul Lubanski states, “We were one of the early adopters of Sean’s show and thank Sean for 12 great years on KXLY.  I’m very excited to have Dave on our station, he’s kicked our butt in the ratings in the 12:00 noon to 3:00 timeslot the past couple of years!”

wilsonlarryLarry Wilson’s L&L Broadcasting to Acquire YMF Media’s Jackson, Mississippi Cluster.  The six-station Jackson station group Larry Wilson’s L&L Broadcasting is set to buy includes three FMs and three AMs: urban contemporary WKXI “Kixie 107 FM,” hip hop WJMI “99 Jams,” sports talk WRKS “ESPN 105.9 The Zone,” news/talk WJNT, gospel WOAD, and oldies WJQS.  No price has been announced yet but in a statement, Wilson says, “The YMF Media cluster in Jackson will be a great addition to our Mississippi footprint.  As the state capital, Jackson is an energetic and thriving city with endless opportunities for growth.  We’re excited to bring these heritage stations into the L&L family.”

bergmansandiMEDIA BROKER SPOTLIGHT:  George Kimble of Kozacko Media Services.  In this week’s installment of Media Broker Spotlight, Sandi Bergman of RadioTVDeals.com interviews media broker George Kimble of Kozacko Media Services in Tucson, Arizona.  Kimble has been in radio since he was 13, as his father was a station owner.  By the time he was 17 and a senior in high school, he was also the morning man at his local hometown station.  He went on to be a radio and television station owner himself for some 40 years.  Kimble agrees with the editorial philosophy expressed in this trade publication that there are indeed opportunities for displaced, experienced radio management in local ownership if they are willing to roll up their sleeves and personally work all ends of it.  He states, “There are plenty of good opportunities available.  The prices have come down to the lowest in years — so NOW is certainly the time for action.  While there are no national financial sources of money — local banks will still back an on-scene, experienced operator with the help of the SBA.  And, seller financing is available in a number of smaller market opportunities.”  Kimble shares several hot listings in this piece.  To read the entire installment of Media Broker Spotlight, please click here.

nbcsportsradio logoNBC Sports Radio Shows to Broadcast from Celebrity Charity Golf Tourney.  The American Century Championship, the “premiere celebrity golf tournament,” is owned and produced by NBC Sports and sponsored by American Century Investments.  The annual tournament (in its 24th year) features some of the sports and entertainment world’s biggest celebrities and raises funds for local and national charities including Expect Miracles Foundation and American Cancer Society‘s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.  To date, American Century Investments and NBC Sports have raised more than $4 million through the American Century Championship.  Celebrities scheduled to play for the $600,000 purse include: NBC Sports Radio host Rodney Harrison and NBC Sports Radio senior contributor Chipper Jones, as well as Emmitt Smith, Charles Barkley, Aaron Rodgers, Ozzie Smith, Ray Romano, John Elway, Jerry Rice, Marshall Faulk, Goose Gossage, and many more.  Both “Under Center with McNabb & Malone” featuring Donovan McNabb and Mark Malone, and “Amani and Eytan” with Amani Toomer and Eytan Shander will be broadcasting live from the event this Thursday and Friday from the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

kileypatrickFormer Talk Host Patrick Kiley Sentenced in Ponzi Scheme.  Seventy-five-year-old Patrick Kiley was the fourth of a group of defendants to be sentenced for his part in a Ponzi scheme that prosecutors say defrauded victims of $194 million.  He was sentenced by a Minnesota judge to 240 months in federal prison.  Kiley hosted a nationally syndicated radio program called “Follow the Money” distributed by the Worldwide Christian Radio Network.  According to WCCO-TV, in Minneapolis, Kiley and co-conspirators “Trevor Cook, Jason Bo-Alan Beckman, Gerald Joseph Durand and Christopher Pettengill – were all solely and jointly ordered to pay $155,359,411 in restitution to their victims.”  Kiley was convicted of 12 counts of wire and mail fraud.

Dave Ramsey Joins the iHeartRadio Platform.  Nationally syndicated personal finance talk radio host Dave Ramsey becomes part of the Clear Channel Media and Entertainment’s iHeartRadio digital platform beginning today becoming the first independently syndicated personality channel available on the platform.  Ramsey’s show won’t air live though.  The service will provide fans 24/7 access to the previous day’s content of the Dave Ramsey show and it will be updated daily on weekdays at 5:00 pm ET.  Ramsey VP of broadcast Brian Mayfield states, “We are very proud of what the Dave Ramsey show has achieved with the help of our 500-plus existing radio affiliates.  This new partnership with iHeartRadio provides the perfect platform to expose Dave’s straight talk on life and money to a new audience that now consumes media through mobile and online applications.”

Entercom Reports Q2 Revenue Flat.  The second quarter of 2012 saw revenue flat at $104.6 million compared to the same quarter a year ago for Entercom.  But the reduction in expenses of 5% produced a 10% rise in station operating income.

Entercom’s WEEI to Split AM and FM Signals; AM to Become ESPN Outlet.  In a story from the Boston Globe, Entercom’s Boston sports talk brand WEEI will soon split the current simulcast of the radio station and make the 850 AM signal a full-time ESPN Radio outlet.  WEEI has had a relationship with ESPN Radio for almost three years now with the station airing some ESPN programming and ESPN personalities such as Buster Olney making appearances on WEEI programs.  It’s expected the regular national lineup of ESPN Radio shows will air on the signal when the split takes place in the early fall.

Mike Costa to Co-Host PM Drive at Xtra Sports 1360 in San Diego.  Clear Channel Media and Entertainment’s San Diego cluster moves Mike Costa from his position as host of “The Show “ on rock KIOZ to co-host of the PM drive show on sports talk KLSD – Xtra Sports 1360 effective today.  Costa is partnered up with Judson Richards for the 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm program.  Costa, who’s been a sideline reporter for San Diego Chargers football for radio broadcasts, will continue in that role.

Award-Winning Journalist.  WSB-AM/FM, Atlanta assistant program director Condace Pressley (c) accepts the 2012 Pioneer Journalist Award from actor Malcolm Jamal Warner (l) and Atlanta Association of Black Journalists president Tenisha Bell of CNN (r).  Pressley received the honor during the 30th Pioneer Black Journalists Awards on July 29.  The awards ceremony is a presentation of the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists.  Tenisha Bell says of Pressley, “Condace has spent her career mentoring and supporting young journalists who aspire to walk in her footsteps.  She has always been an avid supporter of AABJ and its mission and I am thrilled that our membership has chosen her for this well-deserved award.”

Half-Hour Weekend Talk Show’s Success Inspires Music Show Syndicator to Eyeball More Spoken Word Offerings.  Los Angeles-based MannGroup Radio, headed by radio vet and co-founder of Premiere Radio Networks, Ed Mann, has avoided talk radio for almost the entire 14 years of its existence as an independent syndicator of such fare as GrooveWorx Imaging and music libraries, CPR consulting with Paige Nienaber, She Prep with Beth Bacall and other products geared to music stations.  In early 2011, MG took on the marketing of a short 30 minute-per-weekend program for talk stations called “Issues Today with Bob Gourley,” the success of which has obviously meant a great deal to Mann.  The fast-paced half hour, hosted by veteran broadcaster and Southern California-based journalist Bob Gourley, chronicles topical subjects from health to the economy.  It began at KPPC where Gourley served as public affairs director.  In a recent extremely candid conversation with the TALKERS editors, Mann reveals, “Extreme polarized talk has always left a sour taste in my mouth, particularly the very far right and left issues that never resolve on a broadcast forum, yet, as an avid listener of talk radio, I’ve always been starved for an intelligent, entertaining approach to issues for the day.  As we’ve taken on this relatively small but meaningful program, Bob Gourley’s ‘Issues Today,’ and watched how it’s grown and how the affiliates and listeners embrace it, I’m more encouraged than ever to hear from producers, stations and hosts in the hope of developing and marketing other like-minded programs for national distribution that can cut a swath in talk radio without sitting on either side of the seesaw and sticking their tongues out at each other.  Some have already come my way, and I sense a shift in the marketplace.  Our company is jazzed at the notion of collaborating with producers, hosts and radio stations who can see the need on the listener level for level-headed broadcasting.”  Independent hosts and producers can contact Mann at 310-346-4991 or via e-mail at ed@manngroupradio.com.

Fourth Station Joins the “Sports Animal Network.”  KITO, Vinita, Oklahoma drops country and becomes the fourth station to join Oklahoma’s “Sports Animal Network.”  The station is airing content from the Tulsa version of the network from KYAL, Muskogee/Tulsa.  The programming includes shows from Cumulus Media’s WWLS, Oklahoma City as well as Yahoo! Sports Radio.  The station will also broadcast Oklahoma University, Oklahoma State University and Tulsa football.
