Bubba the Love Sponge Returns to Tampa on WHFS-FM. Via an official press statement issued today (1/5), Beasley Broadcasting confirms the news a local advertiser spilled on Friday about the return of Bubba the Love Sponge to the market on the company’s newly-acquired Tampa signal WHFS-FM. The former FM sports talk outlet will make public its new format at some point in the future but after signing on this morning at 6:00 am, Bubba the Love Sponge announced the station would air his program continuously for the next few weeks or so before debuting WHFS-FM’s new format. Bubba aired in the market on Cox Media’s crosstown WHPT “102.5 FM The Bone” before being ousted from the station in August and replaced by then-afternoon drive host Mike Calta. The move pits former station-mates Calta and Bubba against each other in mornings. Last week, Ker’s WingHouse debuted Bubba Style Wings and announced Bubba’s return to the market on WHFS-FM. Beasley says listeners are still voting for their format choice at the station’s website — thenew98.7.com — and the new format is expected to be announced within weeks.
Howie Carr’s New England Regional Juggernaut Keeps Gaining Steam – New Stations Signed and GSM Brought Aboard. The independent talk radio network recently launched by Boston-based, multi-media icon Howie Carr continues to gather major affiliates throughout the six New England states and sets a shiningly optimistic model for what can be created and accomplished in the often-tenuous arena of regional spoken-word syndication. The latest stations joining the Howie Carr Radio Network (HCRN) include WCAP, Lowell, MA (which started last week); WBEC, Pittsfield, MA (which starts tomorrow 1/6); and WFEA, Manchester, NH (which begins on 1/19), bringing the total number of affiliates to 19. Also, HCRN VP of sales & marketing, Kathy Carr announces the hiring of sales heavyweight Ross Holt as the company’s new general sales manager. Holt, who is moving back to his home in New England, was most recently part of the sales team at CBS O&O WINS, New York and has sold Carr in the past while at WGAN, Portland. The sheer power of the loyal-listener-generating Carr program in market after market across the Northeast segment of the US has proven to be a strong advertising lure for such regional blue chip sponsors as Subaru of New England and a long list of others. Commenting on the growth and impact of the Howie Carr show in its independent regional incarnation (since the host left Entercom’s WRKO, Boston this fall and replaced it as his flagship with Beantown’s reconstituted WMEX) TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison states, “It is not easy doing what Howie and Kathy Carr are accomplishing with this network – and that is creating a pertinent local flavor that resonates with listeners across a very large and diverse expanse of markets and works in terms of both ratings and revenue. There are lessons for the industry to learn from this extremely interesting endeavor. Of course, you must have the right host to pull this off and this guy is a true rarity. If New England were to suddenly declare itself a single state, Howie Carr would be elected its first governor.”
Boston Herald Radio and WMEX, Boston Share New Morning Show. The morning drive show on the Boston Herald’s digital platform – Boston Herald Radio – is now hosted by Adriana Cohen and Tom Shattuck (pictured here). The program airs from 7:00 am to 9:00 am and is also being heard on Blackstrap Broadcasting-owned and Wallis Communications-operated WMEX. Shattuck, who also serves as executive producer of Boston Herald Radio, says in the compay’s paper, “We’ve always been straight with our audience. This is the city of Jerry Williams, Gene Burns and David Brudnoy. We are lucky enough now to have an opportunity to be custodians of those same airwaves and we will do it humbly, tirelessly and with the utmost respect for the listener.” WMEX grabbed longtime Boston afternoon personality Howie Carr after his contract with Entercom’s crosstown WRKO expired in November.
WLS-AM, Chicago Breaks Up Proft and Wolf Morning Show. As tipped by Chicago media writer Robert Feder, the morning show at Cumulus Media’s news/talk WLS-AM, Chicago will be hosted by Bruce Wolf solo after the company parted ways with Dan Proft. Wolf and Proft had worked together at the station, first in middays, before moving to mornings after longtime duo Don Wade and Roma exited due to Don Wade’s health issues. (Wade later died from complications from a brain tumor.)
Former WSJRN Programming Evolves and Continues as Compass Media Networks Content. As TALKERS reported last month, Compass Media Networks is advancing the business news radio programming abandoned by the Wall Street Journal after the latter chose to get out of the radio business at the end of 2014. Today, Compass debuts breaking business and money news under the “Your Money Now” brand. The one-minute reports are fed to affiliate stations twice per hour at :20 and :50 from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm ET Monday through Friday. Anchors for the reports are former WSJRN morning drive anchor Jennifer Kushinka, former CEO Radio, WSJRN and BusinessWeek Radio anchor Ray Hoffman in middays, and former WSJRN evening anchor Bruce Vale in afternoon drive. Also, Compass is continuing the morning drive program hosted by Gordon Deal for the WSJRN as the show is renamed “This Morning, America’s First News with Gordon Deal.” Compass says the show continues to air on some 250 affiliate stations as well as on numerous digital platforms.
Seven Salem News/Talkers Assume ‘The Answer’ Brand. Adding to the number of Salem Communications news/talk stations already using “The Answer” brand are seven more of the company’s like-programmed outlets, including: KCBQ-AM, San Diego; KLFE, Seattle; KZNT, Colorado Springs; WGKA, Atlanta; WGUL, Tampa; WGTK, Louisville; and WLSS, Sarasota. WNYM, New York began using the “Answer” brand in 2012. Salem SVP of spoken word formats Phil Boyce comments, “We discovered that our listeners are information seekers, always craving the answer to every possible question, from why am I stuck in traffic to who won the November election. This branding allows our stations to cut through in markets where they are competing with more established stations that only need their call letters as a brand. We needed something more, and this works.”
‘The Union Edge’ Radio Show Releases New App. Pittsburgh-based radio talk show “The Union Edge,” hosted by Charles Showalter with executive producer and co-host Angela Baughman and co-host/communications director Brittany Sheets, unveils its new app created with partner Jack of Trade Apps. The new app allows listeners to stream the daily 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm ET program live as well as listen to podcasts on demand and “demonstrate some serious solidarity by sending in photos showing their everyday union actions.” Listeners can also use the “speak out” voice recorder function to react to the show and expand on their thoughts and feelings about issues that impact their lives. Jack of Trade Apps president Andrew Davis says, “What this app does is allow union families to organize in a way that surrounds this already great programming that heralds issues that directly impact them. We are excited to be able to give them such a valuable tool, to help them achieve their growth and spread their message in a new way.”
Odds & Sods. Former Arkansas governor and one-time presidential candidate Mike Huckabee gives up his weekend talk program at Fox News Channel. Huckabee – still heard on the radio via his “Mike Huckabee Report” daily commentaries now distributed by WYD Media – says he’ll make an announcement about whether he intends to run for president in 2016 sometime in the first part of this year…..Salem Communications expands the “Cats Roundtable” program heard on WNYM, New York “AM 970 The Answer.” The Sunday morning show, hosted by New York City businessman John Catsimatidis is now heard from 8:30 am to 10:00 am…..KBGG, Des Moines sports talk host Larry Cotlar exits the station as it transitions from “The Zone” to “The Champ.” Cotlar’s show is being replaced by CBS Sports Radio Network’s Doug Gotleib…..Dr. Frank Wright exits Salem Communications where the former National Religious Broadcasters chief served as president and chief operating officer. Dr. Wright will receive his salary in the form of severance for the next six months…..Beasley Broadcasting’s WHFS-AM, Tampa drops the CBS Sports Radio Network-programming on the station and flips the station to business talk using programming from the company’s WSBR, Boca Raton, Florida. Beasley acquired the station from CBS RADIO in a swap.
St. Joseph, Missouri’s KFEQ Joins “Market Rally”Affiliate Network. The daily analysis of farm commodity markets airs 4:06 pm – 5:00 pm on the Eagle Communications-owned talker. KFEQ general manager Gary Exline comments, “Ever since Farm Journal launched ‘Market Rally’ [in March 2014], we have taken a wait-and-see attitude [but] when farmers in our region started asking for it – we knew we couldn’t wait any longer. ‘Market Rally’ is the perfect programming solution as we set out to reboot our afternoon drive lineup.” According to Farm Journal Radio vice president and general manager Mark DePrez, “Market Rally” host Chip Flory “already has more than 6,500 Twitter followers, a clear signal that farmers and ranchers are highly engaged in his entertaining and educational approach to the markets.” When Illinois outlets WRHL, Rochelle and WAIK, Galesburg begin carrying the program early this year, “Market Rally” will be heard on 42 affiliates in nine states.
2015 International CES; What Next? Radio consultant Holland Cooke is in Las Vegas covering the huge 2015 Consumer Electronics Show. As Cooke notes, video and pictures are paramount to viral media. “Major recent news stories demonstrate how profoundly technology impacts our lives. More pictures and video are now shot with smartphones than cameras. When Eric Garner’s take-down for selling untaxed cigarettes turned fatal, bystander video turned an already painful national conversation about race even more-painful. When video of North Korea’s hack attack against Sony Pictures spooked movie theaters, The Interview was released on YouTube.” Read more here.

Heather Cohen Named TALKERS “Woman of the Year” — Will Be Presented Award at Talkers Los Angeles 2013 by KFI/KTLK PD Robin Bertolucci. Hard-working industry super-agent, Heather Cohen, executive vice president of leading radio talent representatives, the Weiss Agency, has been voted by the TALKERS editorial board to be the 2013 recipient of the prestigious “Judy Jarvis Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to Talk Radio by a Woman.” This award is often referred to by the title, “Woman of the Year.” Cohen has accrued a stellar list of accomplishments in a career that spans more than a decade and a half in the radio industry and includes her current work as an agent at Eric Weiss ‘s Weiss Agency since 2007, based in the firm’s New York office. Prior to that, Cohen briefly led the programming arm of GreenStone Media, LLC — where she was VP of programming and significantly contributed to that initiative’s being awarded three Gracie Awards. During the decade prior to GreenStone, Cohen served as executive producer of the legendary, award-winning, Joan Hamburg show on WOR, New York and as the then-Buckley Broadcasting-owned heritage station’s assistant program director. Cohen is a graduate of Hofstra University and serves on its School of Communication Advisory Board. CBS Radio Makes Management Moves in Los Angeles and Tampa. Former Cox Media Group Miami market manager Dan Kearney is named senior vice president and market manager for the company’s Los Angeles cluster that includes all news KNX, CHR KAMP-FM “97.1 AMP Radio,” adult hits KCBS-FM “93.1 Jack FM,” alternative KROQ, classic hits KRTH “K-Earth,” and AC KTWV “94.7 The Wave.” As explained by CBS Radio EVP of operations Scott Herman, the change allows current LA market manager Steve Carver to move back East as desired where he’ll head up the Tampa cluster. Kearney managed the Miami cluster for CMG from 2012-2013 after moving down from news/talk WSB, Atlanta. He first joined Cox at news/talk KFI, Los Angeles in 1998 as local sales manager when that company owned the station. CBS Radio president and CEO Dan Mason says of Kearney, “Dan is an accomplished broadcaster and exactly the right executive to shape a new future for our iconic radio stations in Los Angeles. He has an impressive record of experience managing the operations of a multitude of different radio formats, producing noteworthy growth across all key measures. Dan’s a fabulous addition to our organization.” Steve Carver will replace Ben Hill whom the company says agreed more than a year ago to work across the state from his home in the West Palm Beach area. He will work through the transition until October 11 and be available to the company through the end of the year. CBS Radio operates six stations in Tampa including: sports talk WHFS-AM “CBS Sports Radio 1010” and WHFS-FM “98.7 The Fan,” rhythmic CHR WLLD “Wild 94.1,” country WQYK, classic hits WRBQ “My Q105,” and Spanish WYUU “92.5 Maxima.”
Rob Babin to Lead CMG’s Miami Cluster. Cox Media Group promotes Rob Babin to vice president and market manager for its Miami station group that includes hot AC WFLC “97.3 The Coast,” urban contemporary WHQT “Hot 105 FM,” hip hop WEDR “99 Jamz,” and soft AC WFEZ “Easy 93.1.” Cox EVP of Radio Kim Guthrie states, “We are delighted to tap into our amazing, internal leadership talent pool and have Rob step into this new executive role, overseeing our Miami operation. He has been an outstanding leader in his 12 years with CMG, both in our Orlando and Atlanta radio markets. His strategic vision, incredible performance track record and desire to be the best make him a great fit for this opportunity.” Babin most recently was vice president of sales for the Atlanta stations, including news/talk WSB, one of the top 10 billing stations in the country. Clear Channel Flips KOY, Phoenix to Business as ‘Business 1230 KFYI.’ Gone are adult standards on KOY-AM and in is business talk format using predominantly Bloomberg Radio content. The station is airing the “Big Business with Sully” program from 9:00 am to 11:00 am with more local programming on the way according to program director Neil Larrimore. He states, “The business format fits well into the KFYI brand. Businesses and individuals are always looking for ways to manage their money better, to do more with less, and to make sure their futures are secure. This touches everybody – it’s a natural relationship for the established and trusted KFYI information brand to be part of this format.”
MEDIA BROKER SPOTLIGHT: Doyle Hadden of Hadden & Associates Media Brokers. In this week’s installment of Media Broker Spotlight, Sandi Bergman of RadioTVDeals.com interviews media broker Doyle Hadden of Hadden & Associates Media Brokers located in the Orlando area of Florida. Hadden went into being a broker after years of being in radio and television sales, management and ownership. He says he wasn’t “good enough” to be an on-air talent so he found a way to make money “behind the scenes.” He says, “Based on the past five or six years, things are on the rise in buyers’ interest in getting back into the game, now that the economy has shown signs of improving. WMVP, Chicago “ESPN 1000” talk show host Tom Waddle is joining the mothership’s “Football Sunday on ESPN Radio” beginning this season and starting with the first show September 8 at 1:00 pm ET. Waddle co-hosts the “Waddle & Silvy” show on WMVP. Waddle will work from the company’s Bristol, Connecticut studios and will also appear on Sunday editions of ESPN’s “SportsCenter” and on ESPN2’s “Cowherd on Football” – the new hour-long program focusing on both college and pro football discussion and commentary with host Colin Cowherd that airs from 9:00 am to 10:00 am ET…..St. Louis Rams great Torry Holt signs on with Hubbard Radio’s WXOS, St. Louis “101 ESPN” to serve as the station’s football insider providing exclusive weekly call-ins to the station. He’ll make three weekly appearances on the station: Each Monday morning during “Zach and Rammer,” Wednesdays on “The Turn” with Chris Duncan and Anthony Stalter, and Friday afternoons on “The Fast Lane” with Randy Karraker and D’Marco Farr.
Salem Communications Sponsoring Kevin Jackson’s “Reparations Comedy Tour.” Talk show host, speaker and author Kevin Jackson’s “The Reparations Comedy Tour” gains more support as Salem Communications agrees to join Americans for Prosperity and The Daily Caller as sponsors for his new conservative comedy tour featuring Brad Stine, Tim Wilkins, Even Sayet, and Tim Young. WLSS, Sarasota “News Talk 930 AM” and WGUL, Tampa “Talk Radio 860 AM” are leading the promotional efforts on behalf of the company. A press release for the tour states that “Jackson and his friends will be taking aim at the politically correct world America has become, especially when it comes to dealing with race relations. The tour kicks off on Thursday, September 12, with two shows at The Crest Theatre in Delray Beach, Florida, and moves to the Palladium Theatre in St. Petersburg, Florida the next evening with future dates to be announced soon.”

U.S.-Egypt Relations, Ted Cruz Citizenship Issue, Clinton Foundation Expenses Scrutiny, ObamaCare Implementation, 2016 Presidential Jockeying, and Financial Markets Activity Among Top Stories Yesterday (8/19). Violence in Egypt and the state of the United States’ relationship with the country; the case of U.S. Senator Ted Cruz’s Canadian citizenship status; controversy over the expenses at the Clinton Foundation; the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, the early jockeying for position in the 2016 presidential race; and financial markets activity were some of the most-talked-about stories on news/talk radio yesterday, according to ongoing research from TALKERS.
Tom Langmyer Named VP News/Talk Programming for Journal Broadcast Group. Veteran radio programmer and executive Tom Langmyer has been named vice president, news/talk programming for the Milwaukee-based Journal Broadcast Group. The announcement was made today by Steve Wexler, EVP of Journal. In his new role, Langmyer will oversee the programming of Journal flagship WTMJ, Milwaukee. He will also work closely with Journal VP/programming Beverlee Brannigan on Journal’s news and talk stations across the company. Wexler tells TALKERS, “I am thrilled to welcome Tom to the Journal family. He is a trusted leader with a well-known track record of success. He understands the importance of heritage stations like WTMJ. I’ve known Tom for years and am happy to finally be able to call him a fellow employee.” Langmyer most recently was VP/GM of Tribune’s WGN, Chicago, a position he held since 2005. He was previously VP/GM of CBS Radio’s KMOX, St. Louis and served as vice president of news/talk programming for CBS Radio. He joined CBS as program director of KMOX in 1992. Langmyer’s background also includes consulting radio stations throughout the U.S. in a variety of news, talk and music formats as president of The Blue Water Group. He began his career in Buffalo at WBEN and WGR. Langmyer tells TALKERS, “I’ve admired Journal Broadcast Group for many years as a leader in local content – and for their service to their communities. WTMJ is Wisconsin’s iconic multi-platform brand, with great personalities, dependable news and it’s also revered as the home of the Packers, Brewers, Badgers and Bucks. I’m honored and excited to join Steve, Beverlee and Journal.” Langmyer assumes the role on August 12.
Entercom Q2 Revenues Decreased 3% to $101.2 million. “Strong expense management and reduced interest expense enabled Entercom to grow adjusted earnings per share despite a decline in revenues for the quarter,” states Entercom president and chief executive officer David Field. “Notwithstanding our disappointing revenues, we believe we are well positioned to accelerate our performance later in the year, based on our excellent ratings and our strong competitive position that has been further bolstered by a number of recent operational and strategic enhancements.” Other Entercom Q2 highlights included station expenses decreased 3% to $65.7 million; station operating income decreased 4% to $35.5 million; free cash flow decreased 2% to $18.9 million; and adjusted EBITDA decreased 4% to $30.7 million. Meanwhile, adjusted net income per share increased 8% to $0.26. Entercom reduced its outstanding net senior debt and senior notes by $3.5 million during the quarter. As of June 30, 2013, the company had $6.3 million in cash and $545.6 million of senior debt and senior notes. During the quarter, Entercom took a $0.9 million impairment related to the anticipated sale of non-core real estate in one of its markets.
Digital Radio Consultant: “It’s Boston, but is it the Herald?” Noted digital radio consultant and TALKERS columnist Chris Miller offers interesting and valuable observations about yesterday’s debut of Boston Herald Radio (8/5). In a new column posted today (8/6), Miller puts the fledgling media station’s arrival in context to the struggles facing print today and the challenges all media faces in effectively synchronizing their cross-platform products to be compatible and reflective of the mother company’s overall brand. He writes, “Here is where they get an argument from me. They may have the words right, but they don’t have the melody. The Boston Herald is one of those unique newspapers, one that most markets don’t have. They’re an outrageous tabloid, not unlike the New York Post, and one that is more about stirring things up and getting a reaction than sticking to strict journalistic principles. You could say they’re like Fox News with a nervy Boston attitude. What I heard today was a lot of Herald staffers talking on my TuneIn app. I also heard a pretty standard conservative talk show host, the sort you might hear anywhere. I didn’t hear a radio station that mirrored what you expect when you pick up a copy of the Herald. Local reporters and conservative talk show hosts are not in short supply. What can the Boston Herald do to make their audio stream uniquely Herald-esque? Most terrestrial radio stations struggle with this, too. Student Succeeds Ex-Boss: Rodgers In/Rome Out At Denver’s “Zone.” It comes with the territory that a syndicated radio talent will (hopefully) pick up some large market affiliates, but most likely lose a few along the way, as well. Some will diplomatically say they do not keep score of each particular situation, but one can safely assume that iconic sports radio personality Jim Rome is fully aware his replacement at Lincoln Financial Media-owned KEPN, Denver “1600 The Zone” is none other than his former longtime producer Travis Rodgers. The two worked together for years when Premiere Radio syndicated Rome, who is now the cornerstone of CBS Sports Radio, while Rodgers fronts his own show for Yahoo! Sports Radio. “We are absolutely thrilled that our programming is expanding to Denver,” states Yahoo! Sports Radio chief operating officer and program director Craig Larson. “Yahoo! Sports Radio is developing the next generation of sports talk superstars. Without a doubt Travis Rodgers is at the very top of that list.” The Rodgers for Rome switch in Denver takes place today (Tuesday, 8/6).
MEDIA BROKER SPOTLIGHT: George Reed of Media Services Group. In this week’s installment of Media Broker Spotlight, Sandi Bergman of RadioTVDeals.com interviews media broker George Reed of Media Services Group in Jacksonville, FL. Reed, who comes from the “station side” of the industry, has an MBA from Georgia State University and is a former owner of WJTT, Chattanooga. He says business is pretty good: “The TV world is hot and radio has become more active, albeit at lower price levels. A lot of the supply which built up during the recession has now been ‘worked off,’ including most of the distressed situations. I predict steadily increasing station trading into the future.” He offers several opportunities for displaced station managers and first-time entrants looking to roll up their sleeves and take on an ownership project. Sports Radio Mentor Inspired John Tournour’s New Book, “The Handoff.” It is in “The Handoff: A Powerful Memoir of Two Guys, Sports, and Friendship” that John Tournour summarizes how he was helped in his career journey by Fox Sports Radio executive Andrew Ashwood. Tournour, known on FSR by his air name “JT the Brick,” learned life’s most important lessons just as Ashwood was diagnosed with what would be terminal cancer. “As I look back at those 13 months, what I feel now is a kind of frenzy,” Tournour reflects. “Everything felt contracted, moving at a much faster pace – and every moment seemed critical.” National Media Groups, Clear Channel Media and Entertainment president of content and affiliate services Julie Talbott comments, “JT has captured the magic of a great friendship mixed with the dynamic moving parts of our sports world – a perfect combination.” Eighteen years ago, Tournour left a lucrative position as a Merrill Lynch stockbroker to pursue his dream as a sports radio talk host and won Jim Rome‘s first annual “Great American Smack-Off.” A portion of sales from his book will benefit City of Hope, a leading cancer center where Ashwood received treatment. The former vice president and general manager of Fox Sports Radio was 51 when he died in November 2008.
SiriusXM To Broadcast 95th PGA Championship This Week. Live hole-by-hole coverage from Rochester, New York’s Oak Hill Country Club will air on XM channel 93 and Sirius channel 208 this Thursday through Sunday (8/8 – 8/11), with Earl Forcey and John Maginnes serving as host and analyst, respectively. Reporters will include Fred Albers, Mark Carnevale and Dennis Paulson. On-course coverage will start daily at 12:00 pm ET (Thursday-Sunday) and will continue until the conclusion of each day’s play. Among those scheduled to participate are four-time PGA champion Tiger Woods, 2005 PGA champ Phil Mickelson, defending PGA champion Rory McIlroy, and 2013 Masters champ Adam Scott.

Chicago Public Media hires Monica Eng and Becky Vevea as producers for WBEZ signature midday programming, “The Morning Shift with Tony Sarabia” (9:00 am – 10:00 am), “Worldview” (12:00 noon); and “The Afternoon Shift” (2:00 pm – 4:00 pm). Chicago native Eng began working in journalism as a copy clerk for the Chicago Sun-Times when she was in high school; she has spent the last 17 years as a culture, food, and watchdog investigative reporter for The Chicago Tribune. Vevea has covered schools in Chicago and the suburbs for WBEZ on a temporary basis since April 2012. Prior to joining the station, Vevea worked at The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel as an education and general assignment reporter. She has contributed radio reports to NPR’s “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered.” WBEZ managing director Sally Eisele notes, “We are looking forward to the journalistic insights that Monica and Becky will provide to our audience. They have a versatility of skills that will benefit our on air and online initiatives.”

Mischke previously spent 16 years in the Twin Cities at cross-town Hubbard Broadcasting‘s KSTP-AM…..Veteran sales executive Ellen Cavanaugh is the new director of sales at Lincoln Financial Media’s Denver cluster of stations. She will supervise sales efforts at KYGO, KQKS, KKFN, KEPN, KRWZ and Comedy 103.1. Cavanaugh comes to LFM from the new media firm FindMyCompany, where she was corporate sales manager for the past four years. Her previous experience includes management positions at Latino Vibe Media, KILT-FM/Houston, Radio Unica Network, Liberman Broadcasting and other broadcasting outlets in Houston, Albuquerque and Santa Fe…..Eighteen-month KABC/KLOS, Los Angeles VP/sales Bob Visotcky departs the Cumulus-owned talk and rock outlets. Prior to working at that combo, Visotcky was VP/MM of the company’s station cluster in nearby Oxnard-Ventura-Santa Barbara. His lengthy resume includes other upper management radio positions in Los Angeles (at the former KIBB and KCMG), Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas, Denver, and Cleveland. In addition, he is the founder/CEO of LISTINGLIGHT, a night light for real estate signs (great idea!) and president/CEO of Front Porch Broadcasting…..Longtime reporter at all-news operation KCBS-AM, San Francisco Bob Butler is elected president of the National Association of Black Journalists at the organization’s convention in Orlando. Butler was previously the NABJ’s vice president/broadcast….. Flint Rasmussen, the Professional Bull Riders’ official entertainer, joins Alexis Bloomer today (8/6) as the co-host of “Western Sports Round Up” on SiriusXM’s new Agribusiness and Western Lifestyle channel, “Rural Radio.”
Michael Harrison Conclave Keynote Now Posted on TalkersTV. TALKERS and RadioInfo publisher Michael Harrison delivered the Keynote Address at the recent Conclave in Minneapolis. The sweeping speech titled “Radio in the Digital Age: Where Does Talent Fit In?” covers the great distance between Harrison’s early experiences breaking into radio as a DJ some 45 years ago and his view of where the industry will be heading over the next 25 years. In the spirit of “learning” that marks the Conclave, Harrison pulls no punches and spares no details in describing the radio industry and the institution of “radio” as reaching an existential juncture in its quest for ongoing relevance during the cultural, technological and generational sea change of modern times. He maintains that “talent” is the most important element that radio has to offer past, present and future. He passionately suggests that music radio take a lead from news/talk radio and sports talk radio which have taken “ownership” of their respected slices of life during the past quarter century and reclaim its “ownership” of the music culture that it relinquished during that same period of time. He says we should not be arguing whether AM and FM are “radio” versus services such as Pandora, but rather prove it through deeds and action. Harrison discusses the importance of developing prestigious platforms – even in the digital era – saying that simply broadcasting on the internet is not enough — any more than just broadcasting on the airwaves in the 20th century was enough — to maintain radio’s position as an iconic social institution. SHAKER HEIGHTS — As you read here in TALKERS, Boston Herald Radio debuted on Monday 8/5. The internet-only radio station plans to draw on talent and content from their print and online editions to create a new Boston-based news/talk outlet.
A newspaper used to be just something you held and read. TV news was what everyone sat down and watched a half-hour of on the tube back in the day. Radio news was the immediate one, the one that could go with you. Those days are gone. We’re no longer defined by our method of distribution.
More Q2 News from Cumulus CEO Lew Dickey. Yesterday TALKERS reported Cumulus Media’s second quarter revenue figures and the fact that Lew Dickey largely avoided the Rush Limbaugh-Sean Hannity flap by saying he wouldn’t discuss it because they are still in contract negotiations. He addressed other topics TALKERS readers may be interested in: those 10 “code red” stations (big news/talkers bringing down the rest of the company); the health of the CBS Sports Radio Network project for which Cumulus is handling affiliate and ad sales; and the state of network talk programming. First, Dickey told investors the number of “code red” stations is down from 10 to 1 but didn’t specify which station still lags. Second, he states the CBS Sports Radio format is on 300 affiliate stations and is exceeding its revenue plans. “We’re highly encouraged by our early success and expect CBS Sports Radio to be a material growth driver for our company in 2014 and beyond.” And third, addressing the state of the Cumulus Media Networks (which includes syndicated talk – Huckabee, Savage, “Red Eye Radio” – as well as a lot of music programming) Dickey reports it’s been a bit “choppy” but he sees it settling down. “It grew for us in the second quarter and we look for it to be positive in the back half of the year. It’s a pretty fragmented space that ultimately begs for more consolidations… it did turn in a positive performance for us in second quarter.” Thanks to Seeking Alpha for the transcript. Wall Street Journal Radio Network Executive Director Nancy Abramson to Exit Post. Radio management pro Nancy Abramson tells TALKERS the company is reorganizing its management structure and she is moving on. She says she’ll remain with the company through mid-September to assist with the transition. As for the rest of the staff with which the industry is familiar, Abramson says the affiliate team of Susan O’Connell and Susan Moran will continue to service the affiliates of “The Wall Street Journal Report,” “The Wall Street Journal This Morning,” “The Dow Jones Money Report” and “MarketWatch.com Reports.” John Wordock and Patrice Sikora will continue to oversee the news product for The Wall Street Journal and MarketWatch.com Radio Networks. Abramson says she is excited about new opportunities and looking forward to the next adventure. Abramson has served with WSJRN since 1996.
Greater Media Promotes Jake McCann to Director of Sales for Detroit Stations. Jake McCann moves from Greater Media’s Philadelphia stations where he was general sales manager at sports talk WPEN “97.5 The Fanatic” and classic rock WMGK. In Detroit he’ll be in charge of sales for rock WRIF, classic rock WCSX and currently-AC-but-rumored-to-soon-be sports talk WMGC. The fact that McCann has experience selling sports talk could be part of the reason McCann is making this move if, as expected, WMGC flips to sports in August. In a statement, Greater Media Detroit market manager Steve Chessare says, “Jake is the right person to lead our three station sales operation in the Motor City. His passion, dedication and leadership are exactly what we need to take our three outstanding radio properties to the next level.”
Radio One Gives Up on FM Sports in Cincinnati. After seven months, WCFN, Cincinnati “FM 100.3 The Fan” has let go most of its staff, cut ties with CBS Sports Radio Network and flips back to an urban oldies format as “Old School 100.3.” The Cincinnati Enquirer’s John Kiesewetter reports that production manager Rob Williams was the only staffer to survive the change. Tom Gamble, Richard Skinner, Will Chambers, Chad Brendel, Rick Ucchino, Rick Broering, Jeremy Lance, former Reds pitcher Joe Price, and Steve Harris all exited the station on Tuesday morning. Richard Skinner, who hosted “Two Angry Guys” along with Tom Gamble, tells Kiesewetter he’s not angry about the change, “Radio is so cyclical, that you know your time is coming (to get fired). They (Radio One) didn’t seem to have a plan of attack, and they’re pulling the format at a time of the year when all the people are listening for football and baseball.” Clear Channel operates two sports talk stations in the market – WSAI, a Fox Sports Radio affiliate and WCKY, which uses ESPN Radio programming – both of which air largely national shows.
Holland Cooke: Radio from the Newspaper. Radio consultant Holland Cooke adds to the discussion about newspapers entering into the digital talk radio streaming business that’s been a major part of industry chatter in the wake of the Boston Herald’s announcement about the creation of Boston Herald Radio coming Monday, August 5. Cooke has experience in this arena and he offers advice to publications considering the move. Among some dos and don’ts: don’t separate the studio from the newsroom (the sound of busy reporters is crucial!); don’t assume good reporters make good talk hosts; do promote you’re emanating from a storied newsroom; and do make content available for download and later playback. ‘News 92 FM’ and ‘Yahoo Sports Radio 1560’ in Houston Agree to Content Sharing Deal. Radio One’s all-news KROI and Gow Media’s sports talk KGOW in Houston agree to a content sharing deal that will have KROI producing newscasts for KGOW and the latter producing sports updates and actualities for KROI. Here’s how it will work: Beginning in early August, “News 92 FM” reporters will provide hourly, short-form news updates to “Yahoo Sports Radio 1560,” initially for use on nights and weekends, and ramping up to a full broadcast schedule shortly thereafter. In like manner, “Yahoo Sports Radio 1560” reporters will provide sports updates and actualities twice per hour for integration into the “News 92 FM” broadcast clock between 7:00 pm and midnight daily, and from 6:00 am to noon on weekends. Radio One RVP Doug Abernethy and Gow Media CEO David Gow began discussing the possibility earlier this year. Abernethy states, “Research suggests that news and sports stations have shared listener bases. So this makes sense for both stations. We have the best newsgathering and reporting resources in the city, and ‘Yahoo Sports Radio 1560’ enjoys an equivalent reputation in the world of sports. We’re leveraging our respective strengths so that the ‘News 92 FM’ listener can get a quick sports update from ‘Yahoo Radio 1560,’ and their listeners can get top-flight news from ‘News 92 FM.’”

‘Broadway Joe’ Joins Sports USA for Weekly Podcast. Sports USA announces NFL great Joe Namath will join the company to produce a weekly podcast for the company during the 2013 football season. Sports USA president Bob Moore says Namath’s podcast will begin in the middle of August and run through this year’s Super Bowl. Moore states, “It doesn’t get bigger than Joe Namath! Joe is extremely passionate about football and his insights are amazing. This podcast will give him the platform to reach all of his fans across the country and beyond.” Namath comments, “I’m thrilled to join the Sports USA team with my new weekly podcast. I look forward to expressing my opinions on both the NFL and college football each week from the beginning of the season all the way through the Super Bowl.”
