Jack Heath Exits WGIR-AM, Manchester, NH. A brief story in the New Hampshire Union Leader indicates that radio talk show host Jack Heath has exited iHeartMedia’s WGIR-AM, Manchester, New Hampshire and his daily “NH Today” morning program. Heath said goodbye to his listeners at the end of his show and posted the following message to his Facebook page: “I have been honored and humbled to host the show for nearly 7 plus years there. I am especially grateful to the listeners for being there and proud of the work I was able to do to help NH’s great nonprofits and advocate for our veterans — a mission I will continue. This is not a goodbye but a thank you for now. Until we talk again, thanks…Stay tuned. JH.”

KFGO, Fargo’s Joel Heitkamp Positive for COVID-19. A report from the Associated Press indicates that KFGO-AM, Fargo “The Mighty 790” talk show host Joel Heitkamp has tested positive for COVID-19. The story notes that Heitkamp says he began experiencing symptoms last weekend and says he’s “lost his sense of taste and smell and is experiencing body aches.” He’s self-quarantining and still doing his radio program remotely. He told listeners, “I am in a part of the process where it’s certainly after talking with people in the medical field, it certainly looks as though I’m going to be one of the lucky ones in terms of how this has infected me, in terms of how I’m going to feel throughout this process, not going to feel good, not going to feel great.”

SRN’s Sebastian Gorka Has Twitter Account Locked After Biden Post. According to a story published at Breitbart, Salem Radio Network talk show host Sebastian Gorka has been locked out of his Twitter account after posting a photo of Hunter Biden in the bathtub smoking a cigarette and the text, “Why did @FBI take the Biden laptop and do nothing?” Gorka received a message from Twitter saying he’d been locked out for violating the rules and said he must delete the tweets that violate the rules. It’s not clear what rules were broken in the tweet. While appearing on SiriusXM with Breitbart’s Alex Marlow, Gorka said to listeners, “This is America in 2020. The FBI did nothing when they had evidence of crimes, and when I want to talk about it as an American citizen to you and the Breitbart listeners, my account was locked. We are here. We have arrived. 1984 wasn’t fiction, and they want to steal an election again, and I just don’t mean social media, I mean authorities that can burst through your front door at 4:00 am with a warrant like they did to Roger Stone.”

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai Promises to ‘Clarify Ambiguity’ in Section 230. Saying that he’s moving in response to concerns from members of all three branches of the federal government, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai says he’ll proceed with a rulemaking to clarify Section 230 of the Communications Act that explains the immunity from legal responsibility that digital platforms enjoy with regard to their content. Pai says, “The U.S. Department of Commerce has petitioned the Commission to ‘clarify ambiguities in section 230.’  And earlier this week, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas pointed out that courts have relied upon ‘policy and purpose arguments to grant sweeping protections to Internet platforms’ that appear to go far beyond the actual text of the provision. As elected officials consider whether to change the law, the question remains: What does Section 230 currently mean? Many advance an overly broad interpretation that in some cases shields social media companies from consumer protection laws in a way that has no basis in the text of Section 230.  The Commission’s General Counsel has informed me that the FCC has the legal authority to interpret Section 230. Consistent with this advice, I intend to move forward with a rulemaking to clarify its meaning. Throughout my tenure at the Federal Communications Commission, I have favored regulatory parity, transparency, and free expression.  Social media companies have a First Amendment right to free speech. But they do not have a First Amendment right to a special immunity denied to other media outlets, such as newspapers and broadcasters.”

Amy Coney Barrett Confirmation Hearings Top News/Talk Story for Week of October 12-16. The confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett were the most-talked-about story on news/talk radio this week, landing atop the Talkers TenTM. At #2 this week was a four-way tie between the presidential race, Thursday night’s dueling town halls, balloting issues, and scandals & accusations. Coming in at #3 was COVID-19 statistics and projections plus high-profile COVID patients, followed by health care, meds, and protective measures at #4. The Talkers TenTM is a weekly chart of the top stories and people discussed on news/talk radio during the week and is the result of ongoing research from TALKERS magazine. ASU Student Rae’Lee Klein Sues School on Free Speech Grounds. In September, Rae’Lee Klein was removed from her position as manager of Arizona State University’s student radio station Blaze Radio. This came in the aftermath of Klein’s tweet related to the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. In the tweet, Klein said, “Always more to the story, folks. Please read this article to get the background of Jacob Blake’s warrant. You’ll be quite disgusted.” Her attorney, Jack Wilenchik, tells Downtown Devil, “We’re suing because she’s not the station manager. She’s been constructively terminated (and) they’re not letting her do her job. They are discriminating against her based on her exercise of free speech by taking that away.” Klein has been effectively removed from her position but she’s still being paid by the school. According to media and constitutional law specialist David J. Bodney, whom Downtown Devil communicated with for the story, “There was no First Amendment violation here, and Ms. Klein’s claims are meritless. ASU and the Cronkite School have deep and abiding commitments to free speech and excellence in journalism, and this lawsuit disregards an array of facts that show just how baseless these claims really are.” Bodney added that Klein’s conduct post-Tweet is evidence she’s is no longer able to lead Blaze Radio and that the university did not terminate her employment. Bodney also says that Klein was offered other opportunities, such as starting her own radio station with support from the university, all of which she rejected.

TALKERS News Notes. The most recent Westwood One Blog post reveals data from Nielsen Audio’s national consumer study of 1,000 respondents (conducted October 1-5) that tracks the pandemic’s impact on consumer movement, spending, attitudes, and media usage. Some of the conclusions drawn include: 1) There is a 56% increase in the number of Americans working outside the home. Nielsen reports 61% of U.S. workers are now commuting to their workplace, up from 39% in early May; 2) Half of American schoolchildren are driven to school with AM/FM radio playing in the car. 50% say their children are driven to school (3% carpool, 47% parent/family member). 44% of American schoolchildren are taking the bus. 62% indicate that AM/FM radio is always on, and 35% say AM/FM radio is sometimes on in the car; and 3) The economy will affect holiday shopping, but AM/FM radio listeners will spend more than the average. A greater proportion of heavy AM/FM radio listeners say they will spend more this holiday (14%) versus heavy TV viewers (10%) and the overall market (10%). The new season focuses on the disruptive impact of the coronavirus on families, how that disproportionally disrupts moms’ careers, and how to navigate that. Creator and host Katherine Goldstein says, “We’re in an acute crisis at this moment. 865,000 women have left or been forced to leave the workforce between August and September. Many of those women are moms. The lack of structured family and childcare programs that we’ve talked about on ‘The Double Shift’ are more glaringly missing than ever before.”…..Syndicated Solutions, Inc announces that its national travel radio show “RMWorldTravel with Robert & Mary Carey and Rudy Maxa” has successfully surpassed another affiliation milestone and is now heard on more than 440 radio stations across the USA and Canada.  The Careys say, “Since the pandemic has disrupted our nation and the world back in March, ‘RMWorldTravel’ has added about 30 new affiliates and additional new sponsors, underscoring the importance of all aspects of the travel world in our daily lives.”

KXNT, Las Vegas Revamps Mornings; Glenn Beck and Alan Stock Join Daily Program Schedule. The morning drive programming at Entercom’s news/talk KXNT, Las Vegas is now officially comprised of two hours of the Premiere NetworksGlenn Beck program – from 6:00 am to 8:00 am – followed by the local, one-hour “Vegas @ 8” show, hosted by longtime Sin City talk radio host Alan Stock.  Talk host Michael Castner exited the KXNT morning show back in June.  Entercom Las Vegas SVP and market manager Dan Kearney says, “We are excited to bring Glenn to KXNT and add his entertaining and engaging voice to our all-star lineup of programs.  Our ongoing commitment to bringing Las Vegas and the Valley the best in talk programming will be strengthened by this partnership.”

PPM Analysis: All-News. TALKERS magazine managing editor Mike Kinosian presents a look at the performances of radio stations based on data from Nielsen Audio’s September 2019 PPM survey, today focusing on the all-news format.  Fifty percent of all-news stations saw their weekly, 6+ AQH share go down from the August survey to the September survey while just 31% were up (19% were flat).  Year-over-year, 56% of all-news stations were down, while just 38% improved from 2018 to 2019.  There were two all-news stations that ranked #1 in their respective markets in the September survey – Entercom’s KCBS-AM, San Francisco and Hubbard Radio’s WTOP, Washington.  See Mike Kinosian’s entire report here.

WGY, Albany Unveils Season Two of ‘Upstate Unsolved’ True Crime Podcast. Albany news/talk WGY-AM/FM “News Radio 810 AM & 103.1 FM” announces the season two debut of its iHeartRadio Original true crime podcast, “Upstate Unsolved,” hosted by WGY reporter Phoebe LaFave.  The iHeartMedia station says season two launches in partnership with the Cold Case Analysis Center at the College of St. Rose and investigates the unsolved murders of Catherine ‘Kate’ Blackburn in 1964 and Ruth Whitman in 1959.  With the support of the Albany Police Department and the Colonie Police Department, WGY’s “Upstate Unsolved” brings these cold cases into the spotlight in hopes of finding justice for these women.  LaFave adds, “It’s our goal to bring these cold cases out from the shadows because, although time is running out, it’s still possible that someone knows something that can solve one or both of these murders.  Everyone deserves to have their truths come to light and I hope season two of ‘Upstate Unsolved’ can help shine some light on the untimely deaths of these women.”  In March of 2019, the first season of “Upstate Unsolved” premiered focusing on Suzanne Lyall, a Ballston Spa native and University of Albany student who went missing on March 2, 1998.

Rush Limbaugh Show to Hold Sixth Annual Mahindra Military Salute Giveaway. In honor of Veteran’s Day, Premiere NetworksRush Limbaugh program is presenting the sixth annual Mahindra Military Salute Giveaway in which all active and veteran military service members are eligible to enter for a chance to win a Mahindra 1000 Gas Standard utility vehicle with roof and windshield.  Entries are being accepted for the utility vehicle giveaway through November 10.  The winner will be selected in a random drawing on November 11, 2019. Goldberg Named Director of News Programming for ABC Audio. There are management changes at ABC Audio as ABC News Radio midday anchor Scott Goldberg is promoted to director of news programming for ABC Audio, effective October 14.  In a memo to staff, ABC Audio VP/GM Stacia Deshishku says, “Scott is a brilliant journalist with a trusted editorial voice who’s been recognized across the industry for his innovative storytelling.  Just this year he won the National Edward R. Murrow Award for Sports Reporting, his third individual Murrow since joining the Audio department.  He is intimately familiar with how we find and tell stories here at ABC News Radio and I’m excited for the new ideas that he will bring to our division – which he hasn’t been shy about sharing.”  ABC is seeking a new midday news anchor.  At the same time, Jon Newman is now ABC News Radio’s managing editor in which he’ll continue to lead the newsroom.  Tara Gimbel is named deputy managing editor.  These changes come more than three months after Andrew Kalb exited the executive director of programming and news coverage position.  He was also executive producer of ABC’s “Start Here” podcast.

TALKERS News Notes. Sports talker Chris Carlin won’t be filling in on WEPN, New York on the Michael Kay show after all – at least until the New Year.  Yesterday, TALKERS reported that the former WFAN, New York host – who exited the early afternoon show last month – would be sitting in for Peter Rosenberg on WEPN with Kay while Rosenberg was out for the Jewish holidays.  But, according to Neil Best at Newsday, as Carlin went on the air with Kay on Wednesday (10/9), ESPN got a call from Entercom notifying them that if Carlin stayed on for two hours, he risked violating his contract and not getting paid through the end of the year.  He left after 30 minutes as a “guest.”…..ESPN senior writer and TV/radio commentator Mina Kimes is hosting the new “ESPN Daily” podcast set to debut on October 21.  ESPN says “ESPN Daily” will “take a deep dive into a specific story in sports, using ESPN’s unmatched journalistic resources and deep roster of reporters, producers and commentators.”  With ESPN since 2014, Kimes regularly appears on multiple television programs, including the TV simulcast of radio’s “Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz,” “Highly Questionable,” “Around the Horn,” “SportsCenter” and “Outside the Lines.”…..At SB Nation Radio, Basketball Hall of Famer Elvin Hayes returns to host the weekly “In the Post” show.  Hayes and co-host Alex Gold will present news and interviews from the college and pro basketball worlds.  The program debuts on Saturday, October 19 at 7:00 am ET…..Actor Tommy Lenk debuts a new podcast called, “Trashcast,” on the Ladygang Network on PodcastOne.  The “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Rock of Ages” star says, “Celebs bring me their prized possessions and items that no longer ‘spark joy,’ and I try to figure out what’s trash and what’s treasure!  I’m like a totally unqualified Marie Kondo, with none of the discipline and a very shoddy work ethic.”…..Also from PodcastOne, Brian Deegan – the most decorated professional freestyle motocross rider in X Games history – hosts “The Deegans.”  PodcastOne says, “Each week, the Deegans give listeners an all-access pass to the world of racing, parenting, business, sponsorships and health.  In addition, they conduct interviews with the top talent from the world of moto-sports and share their personal goals and insights into how the family stays ahead of the pack.”…..Blumhouse and iHeartMedia announce a strategic partnership to produce a series of fictional podcasts for potential, future film and television development.  The two companies will collaborate to develop and produce scripted podcasts in the horror genre, ranging from suspenseful thrillers and murder mysteries to science fiction audio-plays.  The first podcast in the series is set to launch early next year and will be distributed through the iHeartPodcast Network.  iHeartPodcast Network president Conal Byrne says, “We think fiction is one of the next big genres in podcasting, tapping into the incredible imaginative power we all have – the theater of the mind – and so we couldn’t be more excited to bring this slate of shows into the world, starting with ‘The Mantawauk Caves.’”…..iHeartMedia San Francisco launches a new iHeartRadio Original podcast titled, “CEO Unplugged,” hosted by Carolyn McArdle from KISQ-FM “98.1 The Breeze” and Sandy Stec and Marcus from KIOI-FM “STAR 101.3.”  “CEO Unplugged” highlights Bay Area trailblazers, disruptors, forward-thinking leaders, and philanthropists who set the stage for success and growth and who exemplify the connection between community and business.  Featured podcast guests include Kara Goldin, CEO of Hint Inc.; Bentley Hall, CEO of Good Eggs; Amy Errett, CEO of Madison Reed; Randy Hetrick, CEO of TRX; Paul A. Kansas City alternative KCJK-FM tweaks its format to debut a new, “rockternative” format as “105.1 The X.”  The Cumulus Media station is billed as “the natural rock blend of alternative and active rock formats” featuring artists such as: Tool, Shinedown, The Black Keys, Disturbed, The White Stripes, Motley Crue, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, and “many other artists across generations.”  The weekday programming lineup features “The Woody Show” in mornings, Joel Weiss in middays, followed by new arrival Cassiday Proctor in afternoon drive.  Proctor was most recently afternoon personality at Hubbard Radio’s adult hits WARH, St. Louis “106.5 The Arch.”…..Country WRTB-FM, Rockford, Illinois “95.3 The Bull” APD Gordon Mays is promoted to brand manager for the station.  He takes over for Steve Summers, who is still the station’s morning show host but becomes the brand manager for sister adult hits WXRX-HD2…..iHeartMedia country WDRM-FM, Huntsville adds Brent “Dingo” Crank to the “Dan and Josie Morning Show,” with Dan McClain and Josie Lane.  Cranks was most recently morning host at SummitMedia’s WQNU-FM, Louisville.  iHeartMedia Huntsville SVP of programming Erich West says, “Dan and Josie have been dominating this market for years, but to add a new element like Dingo to the show puts us in a position to grow the WDRM morning show.  I know listeners will enjoy Dingo’s upbeat energy and chemistry that he has with Dan and Josie.”…..iHeartMedia announces the lineup for the third annual iHeartRadio “ALTer EGO Presented by Capital One” show at the Forum in Los Angeles on January 18.  The alternative rock show will feature: Billie Eilish, The Black Keys, blink-182, The Lumineers, Rex Orange County, and SHAED.  The show will livestream exclusively on LiveXLive.com and be broadcast on 70 alternative and rock iHeartRadio stations.

Glenn Beck and Mark Levin Merge TheBlaze and CRTV into Blaze Media. Multiplatform media organizations TheBlaze and CRTV are merging into one company called, Blaze Media.  According to the press release, “The new company will have a monthly multiplatform reach of over 165 million and will be the largest independent, traditionally conservative multiplatform media company in the United States.”  The company will be led by co-presidents Tyler Cardon, formerly president of TheBlaze, and Gaston Mooney, formerly the president of CRTV.  Effective immediately, subscribers to CRTV and TheBlaze Premium will have access to the digital streaming content of both CRTV and TheBlaze, including over 30 original shows.  Blaze Media’s television lineup includes conservative programming, including, “The Glenn Beck Program,” “LevinTV,” “Louder with Crowder,” “The News and Why it Matters,” and “America,” hosted by Eric Bolling.  The new company says the merger will also allow Blaze Media to expand its lineup of linear programming in 2019 to reach its cable and satellite television audiences.  Mark Levin comments, “Tens of millions of Americans have had it with the biased, ideologically driven mainstream media outlets that sanctimoniously advance their own agendas under the guise of ‘news’ and ‘journalism.’  Conservatives actually believe in a free press and the rest of the Constitution.  This is why I started LevinTV, which grew into the CRTV digital network.  In order to further expand and offer the public an alternative to liberal media group-think, I’m very excited about the merger of TheBlaze and CRTV.  The timing is perfect.”

Phil Valentine to Wrap National Show; Focus on WTN-FM, Nashville Show. After 11 years in national syndication, Phil Valentine is ending his syndication effort via Westwood One, effective January 4, and will continue hosting his daily talk radio show at Cumulus Media’s WWTN-FM, Nashville “Super Talk 99.7 WTN.”   In a statement, Valentine says, “I want to thank all the affiliate stations and the Westwood One affiliate team for their support of ‘The Phil Valentine Show’ over the years.  It was a difficult decision for me to eliminate the syndicated show; however, after the recent success of my novel Barbican: A Sterling McQueen Spy Story, I made the difficult decision to focus not only on my writing, but also the development of The Conservative’s Handbook into a podcast series complete with expert guests on each subject covered in the book.  I will remain the host of the popular Phil Valentine show in my hometown of Nashville, as heard on WWTN.”

Nexstar Media Group Agrees to Buy Tribune Media for $4.1 Billion; Fate of WGN-AM Unknkown. According to a report by Reuters, Nexstar Media Group Inc is offering Tribune Media $4.1 billion for its broadcast properties – 42 television stations, cable’s WGN America,  various digital properties, and lone radio asset WGN-AM, Chicago.  The story notes that Nexstar outbid private equity firm Apollo Global Management LLC with its all-cash offer.  Unlike previous suitor Sinclair Broadcasting that owns three Seattle market radio stations, Nexstar Media holds no radio properties.  It is unclear at this time if Nexstar has any interest in operating a major market news/talk radio outlet or not.  Back in August, Tribune put the kibosh on the Sinclair deal after regulators referred to Sinclair’s previous divestments as a “sham” because the company still operated the stations in question.  The deal with Nexstar would make it the largest television operator in the country.  Expect the Justice Department to scrutinize this deal very closely.

iHeartMedia Reports Creditors ‘Overwhelmingly’ Support Fifth Re-Org Plan. Ahead of the December 11 Confirmation Hearing for iHeartMedia’s Chapter 11 reorganization, the company issues a statement announcing that voting results for its Fifth Amended Joint Chapter 11 Plan of Reorganization indicate that “every class of creditors entitled to vote has voted to approve the Plan.  More than 90% of the votes cast by creditors and shareholders who participated in the vote approved the Plan, demonstrating substantial support for, and far exceeding the votes necessary to confirm, the Plan.”  iHeartMedia calls this “a value-maximizing restructuring that comprehensively addresses the company’s funded debt obligations and positions iHeartMedia for continued growth and long-term success.  The Plan will reduce iHeartMedia’s funded debt by approximately $10.3 billion—to $5.75 billion—and result in the separation of iHeartMedia’s radio and outdoor advertising businesses.”

iHeartMedia Net Revenue Soars in October.  As it has been doing since April, iHeartMedia is filing monthly financial data reports with the Securities Exchange Commission as it works through the Chapter 11 reorganization process.  The most recent filing for the month of October shows revenue was $349.4 million – the highest we’ve seen since April’s $417.9 figure.  But net income rockets to $100.2 million – an increase of more than 157% from September’s $11.9 million.  Operating income also rises, from $62.4 million to $104.8 million.  But those scrutinized payments to outside professionals (the one’s attending to the Chapter 11 business) spiked to the highest figure yet — $21 million.

Former KGO, San Francisco Host Ray Taliaferro Found Dead in Kentucky. The search for missing retired radio talk show host Ray Taliaferro ended tragically as his body was found in a wooded area in Paducah, Kentucky three weeks after he’d disappeared.  The story from KGO-TV, San Francisco states that authorities have released no details surrounding his disappearance and cause of death. Taliaferro – who hosted the overnight talk show on KGO-AM, San Francisco from 1977 through 2011 – was last seen talking with the manager of a Paducah pizza parlor before disappearing.  The initial public statement by local authorities indicated Taliaferro may have been suffering from symptoms of dementia.

Chad Benson Takes Over Afternoons on KXNT, Las Vegas. As TALKERS reported on November 19, longtime Las Vegas talk radio personality Alan Stock is exiting the afternoon drive show on Entercom’s KXNT-AM, Las Vegas. Now, the station confirms that Radio America-syndicated talk host Chad Benson will begin in the afternoon drive daypart today (12/3).  The KXNT website states, “If you’ve never listened to Chad’s show, we suggest you check it out – because he isn’t the talk host you’re used to!  He is conversational and informative, all while being irreverent and very funny.”  Meanwhile, Alan Stock begins producing “The Alan Stock Answer” – a daily feature that will air on KXNT at 12:30 pm, 3:30 pm, and 6:30 pm every Monday through Friday.

TALKERS News Notes. The Salem Radio Network’s SRN News and TOWNHALL News announce they will provide live coverage of the state funeral of former President George H.W. Bush on Wednesday (12/5) from the National Cathedral in Washington.  Coverage will be anchored by White House correspondent Greg Clugston.  Additionally, all SRN nationally syndicated talk shows hosted by Mike GallagherEric Metaxas, Hugh Hewitt and others will pay tribute to President George H. Former President George H.W. As reported by Chicago media writer Robert FederiHeartMedia promotes weekend personality Lisa Dent to midday host on country WEBG, Chicago “Big 95.5.”  She takes over for Amber “Alabama” Cole, who left the station for personal reasons. Dent previously served with Entercom’s crosstown country outlet WUSN “US99” as both a midday personality and co-host of the morning show with Ramblin’ Ray Stevens…..The changes at Entercom’s country KMNB, Minneapolis are not too drastic as the country format stays in place and the station is re-imaged as “102.9 The Wolf.”  SVP and market manager Shannon Knoepke states, “‘102.9 The Wolf’ will be the Twin Cities’ station for the biggest country hits from then and now.  From today’s leading artists to all-time essential country favorites, every song beats the pulse of Nashville all day, every day.  We’re excited for our fans – ‘The Wolfpack’ – and clients to continue on this journey with us as we create a close-knit community of fans.”  On-air pro Greg Thunder joins the station as host of “The Wolf Wake Up Crew.”  Current morning show anchor Paul “PT” Thomas expands his role to also host the “Home Town Country Sunday Night” program…..In Rochester, Entercom names Whitney Young the new morning drive co-host alongside Corey James at CHR WPXY.  Young joined the station in 2017 as midday host, then became part of the morning show on an interim basis in May…..Dick Broadcasting names Mica Cadena, a.k.a. LA Rock program director, eliminating the “acting” from her title.  Company vice president Jason Goodman says, “It was an obvious decision to promote Mica to PD of WXQR as she was doing the role already.  WXQR has been on the air for 40 years and recently Mica has led WXQR to its highest ratings ever.”

Portland Spoken Word Formats – Consistently in 5.0 – 5.3 range from July through November (5.0 – 5.3 – 5.2 – 5.3 – 5.1, 6+), Alpha Media news/talk KXL “101 FM News – Stay Connected” repeats at #4, following four successive months (June – September) at #5. Meanwhile, iHeartMedia’s KEX “News Radio 1190 – Depend on Us” is unchanged from October in both 6+-share (2.2) and 6+-market rank (#18), with 2.2 its best 6+-showing in more than two years (2.2, as well, in August 2016). Flat at #23, Alpha Media news/talk KUFO “Freedom 970” is up a collective three-tenths in October and November (.8 – .9 – 1.1, 6+).

After returning the six-tenths it gained in September (1.7 – 2.3 – 1.7, August-September-October, 6+), Entercom sports talk KFXX “1080 The Fan” sputters by another four-tenths in November to 1.3 (6+) and exits the top twenty (#20 to #21, 6+). Portland’s “Fan” was a collective +.9 in August and September (1.4 – 1.7 – 2.3, 6+); however, just prior to August, it posted six straight down or flat moves that resulted in a -1.0 (2.4 – 2.0 – 2.0 – 2.0 – 1.5 – 1.5 – 1.4, 6+). Right behind KFXX is Alpha Media-owned KXTG “The Game” (-.2, flat at #22, 6+), which is trending (1.4 – 1.2 – 1.5 – 1.4 – 1.2, July through November, 6+). Meanwhile, the flagship of the Portland Trailblazers – iHeartMedia’s KPOJ “Rip City Sports Radio 620” – logs its third increase in a row (.4 – .5 – .5 – .7, #28 to #25, 6+), which nearly doubles (+.3) its 6+-share since August.

Without a loss for the fourth time in a row for a collective +1.1 (8.1 – 8.1 – 8.2 – 8.9 – 9.2, 6+), Oregon Public Broadcasting news/talk KOPB repeats at #1 with its best 6+-stat (9.2) since March (9.5). KOPB had been on top from January to August (including a tie in April), before dropping to second in September. This calendar year, KOPB has been +1.1 (January); -1.1 (February); +1.0 (March); -1.0 (April); -.5 (May); and +.7 (October).

Portland Music Formats – Locked on 4.0 (6+) in September and October, Alpha Media CHR KBFF erupts with a +.9 to 4.9, its highest 6+-share in exactly two years (5.3, November 2016); “Live 95.5” advances from eighth to fifth. Owing to a one-tenth gain to 2.9 (#17 to #16, 6+), iHeartMedia’s similarly-programmed KKRZ “Z-100 Portland’s #1 Hit Music Station” applies the brakes to five successive down or flat monthlies that accounted for a combined loss of -1.2 (4.0 – 3.6 – 3.4 – 3.3 – 3.1 – 3.1 – 2.8, 6+). An overall -.9 in three straight decreases (4.7 – 4.4 – 4.3 – 3.8, 6+), co-owned KFBW “105.9 The Brew – Portland’s Rock Station” improves by six-tenths as well (3.8 – 4.4, 6+) and returns to the top ten (#12 to #7). Cluster-mate KUPL “98.7 The Bull – #1 for New Country” posts a gain of six-tenths in back-to-back sweeps (2.4 – 3.0 – 3.6, 6+) and jumps from #14 to #12. Prior to October, “The Bull” was -1.6 in three straight sweeps without an increase (4.0 – 4.0 – 3.9 – 2.9 – 2.4, 6+). As the result of its November improvement, KUPL bypasses Entercom’s similarly-formatted KWJJ, which is a cumulative -1.1 in five straight sweeps without a gain (4.6 – 4.6 – 3.9 – 3.9 – 3.9 – 3.5, 6+); “99.5 The Wolf – The Northwest’s Hottest Country” exits the top ten (#10 to #13). Despite more than doubling (+2.3) its 6+-share in four straight up or flat trends (1.7 – 2.5 – 3.0 – 4.0 – 4.0, 6+), Salem Media Group contemporary Christian KFIS “104.1 The Fish” departs the top ten (#8 to #11). Entering the August sweep, “The Fish” had been down in each of the previous four monthlies for a cumulative -.8 (2.5 – 2.1 – 2.0 – 1.8 – 1.7, 6+). Up four-tenths to 3.3 (#16 to #14, 6+), Entercom hot AC KRSK “105.1 The Buzz – Today’s Best Mix” curtails four successive decreases that resulted in a combined -1.0 (3.9 – 3.7 – 3.5 – 3.4 – 2.9, 6+). The seven-tenths increase that iHeartMedia classic hits-oldies KLTH “106.7 The Eagle” posted in October is obliterated in November with a -.8 (7.6 – 6.8, flat at #3, 6+). Just prior to the October ratings period, “The Eagle” had been down or flat four straight months for a collective loss of four-tenths (7.3 – 7.3 – 7.1 – 7.1 – 6.9, 6+). Four successive reports without a loss netted iHeartMedia adult contemporary KKCW a +1.6  (7.2 – 7.7 -7.9 – 8.8 – 8.8, 6+), but “K-103” forfeits six-tenths to 8.2 (flat at #2, 6+). October’s 8.8 was the best 6+-stat since “Holiday” 2017’s 16.9 for KKCW, which was #1 in December 2017 (13.0, 6+); “Holiday” 2017 (16.9, 6+); and tied for first (with KOPB) in April 2018 (8.5, 6+). Dropping six-tenths as well in November is All Classical Public Media’s KQAC “All Classical Portland” (3.2 – 2.6, #13 to #17, 6+). A collective -1.0 as a result of four decreases in a row (5.6 – 5.4 – 4.8 – 4.7 – 4.6, 6+), Entercom-owned KGON falls from fifth to sixth. Immediately prior to this streak, “92.3 Portland’s Classic Rock” had been without a loss four straight times for a +1.6 (4.0 – 4.0 – 4.6 – 5.4 – 5.6, 6+).

Charlotte Spoken-Word Formats – Not only does Entercom news/talk outlet WBT add one-half share to October’s +.9 (2.9 – 3.8 – 4.3, 6+), the flagship of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers enters the top ten (#12 to #10). This is WBT’s highest 6+-share since February (4.3, as well). Flat at #19, co-owned sports talk WFNZ “The Fan – Charlotte’s Sports Leader” more than doubles (+.7) its 6+ share via four straight up or flat moves (.6 – 1.0 – 1.1 – 1.3 – 1.3, 6+). This particular streak follows four straight sweeps without an increase for the key station of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets that resulted in a -1.1 (1.7 – 1.7 – 1.1 – .7 – .6, 6+).

Four downward trends in succession by University Radio Foundation news/talk station WFAE accounted for a combined -1.6 (4.1 – 3.7 – 3.0 – 2.7 – 2.5, 6+), but “Charlotte’s NPR News Source” picks up two-tenths to 2.7 (6+), moving from #17 to #15. The July through November topline for South Carolina Educational Television Commission news/talk WNSC is: .5 – .6 – .5 – .7 – .6 (flat at #20, 6+).

Charlotte Music Formats – In another ratings report full of tremendous news for iHeartMedia adult hits WLKO, “102.9 The Lake” nets an overall +3.0 as the result of seven straight months without a loss (4.1 – 4.3 – 4.7 – 5.2 – 5.5 – 5.5 – 6.4 – 7.1, 6+) and progresses from third to second. Additionally, this (7.1) is the strongest 6+-share for “The Lake” since December 2017’s 7.2. An increase of one-half share to 4.5 (6+) by Radio One’s WOSF “105.3 RnB” puts an end to its July – October sequence of 4.3 – 4.0 – 4.3 – 4.0 (6+); 4.5 represents its strongest 6+-share since 4.9 in March. Level at 7.5 (6+), Beasley Media Group’s WSOC is #1 for the third month in a row. A loss of two-tenths in October by “103.7 Country’s Hottest Hits” ended four straight up or flat reports that netted a +1.5 (6.2 – 6.9 – 6.9 – 7.5 – 7.7, 6+). Prior to August, the last time WSOC reached the seven-share level (6+) was “Holiday” 2016 (7.0). Meanwhile, iHeartMedia’s WKKT “96.9 The Kat – Charlotte’s #1 for New Country,” which was an overall +1.1 in four successive months without a loss (6.0 – 6.2 – 6.2 – 6.8 – 7.1, 6+), dips four-tenths to 6.7 (second to fourth, 6+). After being a combined +1.3 in September and October (2.7 – 3.5 – 4.0, 6+), CHR cluster-mate WHQC “Channel 96.1” surrenders nearly half that increase in November (3.4 -.6, 6+) and exits the top ten (#10 to #13). Down by one-tenth in both September and October (4.9 – 4.8 – 4.7, 6+), Beasley Media Group urban contemporary WPEG “Power 98” posts a gain of three-tenths to 5.0 (6+) and ranks eighth for the sixth month in a row. In five straight decreases, Educational Media Foundation contemporary Christian WRCM “Positive & Encouraging K-Love” is a collective -1.9 (4.3 – 3.9 – 3.8 – 3.4 – 2.9 – 2.4, #15 to #17, 6+). Off one-half share in November as well is Radio One gospel WPZS “Praise 100.9 Charlotte’s Inspiration Station” (2.9, flat at #14, 6+), which had been a collective +.7 in September and October (2.7 – 3.1 – 3.4, 6+). While flat at #4, Beasley Media Group urban AC WBAV “V-101.9” is nonetheless -1.9 as the result of four straight negative moves (7.9 – 7.6 – 6.9 – 6.1 – 6.0, 6+).  “V-101.9” was +1.4 in May; eroded by -1.2 in June; and erased that -1.2 in its entirety in July with a +1.2.

San Antonio Spoken-Word Formats – Despite surrendering one-tenth to 4.4 (6+) iHeartMedia news/talk WOAI News Radio 1200 – San Antonio’s News, Traffic, & Weather” improves from eighth to seventh. The loss, however, ends at three its consecutive string of improvements that yielded one full-share (3.5 – 3.8 – 3.9 – 4.5, 6+) for the San Antonio Spurs’ flagship. October’s 4.5 was its best 6+-showing since April 2017 (4.5, as well). The July 2018 – November 2018 topline for Alpha Media news/talk KTSA “Stay Connected” (#21 to #22) is 1.4 – 1.7 – 1.4 – 1.7 – 1.5 (6+).

Without an increase for the third straight month (.7 – .7 – .6 – .5, 6+), iHeartMedia sports talk KTKR “Ticket 760 – San Antonio’s Sports Station” nonetheless advances from #29 to #28.

Anchored at #12, Texas Public Radio news/talk KSTX “Hear Yourself Think” nets one full-share as a result of four consecutive up or flat trends (2.6 – 3.0 – 3.4 – 3.4 – 3.6, 6+).

San Antonio Music Formats – There’s a major development at the top of this Texas market’s November 2018 leaderboard as the  2.2-share (6+) advantage that Cox Media Group classic hits-oldies KONO-FM “101.1 San Antonio’s Greatest Hits” held in October over co-owned KCYY “Y-100 San Antonio’s New Country Leader” vanishes. The end result is that KONO-FM (8.3 – 6.9, -1.4, first to second, 6+), which had been on top the past ten sweeps, trades places with “Y-100” (6.1 – 7.0, +.9, second to first, 6+). When KONO-FM sputtered by one-half share in October, it halted at four a consecutive string of increases that yielded a +2.2 (6.6 – 7.0 – 7.7 – 7.8 – 8.8, 6+). In September, “101.1 San Antonio’s Greatest Hits” reached the eight-share threshold (8.8) for the first time since November 2016’s 8.2. As far as “Y-100” is concerned, September’s loss of eight-tenths curtailed three straight gains that accounted for a +1.5 (5.3 – 5.7 – 5.9 – 6.8, 6+). In August, KCYY reached the six-share level (6.8) for the first time since October 2017’s 6.0. Meanwhile, iHeartMedia’s KAJA “KJ-97 San Antonio’s #1 Country Station” levels off at 5.0 (fourth to sixth, 6+) after plummeting by -1.1 in October (6.1 – 5.0, 6+). A collective -1.3 in March and April, “KJ-97” answered with a +.6 in May. Off by one-tenth in September and October (1.9 – 1.8 – 1.7, 6+), Educational Media Foundation contemporary Christian KZAR “Air 1 Positive Hits” busts out a +.8 to 2.5 and enters the top twenty (#18), with its best 6+-stat (2.5) since May’s 2.4. Faltering by nine-tenths and one-half share, respectively, though are its contemporary Christian cluster-mates KZLV (3.4 – 2.5, #12 to #18, 6+) and KMLR (.8 – .3, #30, 6+), both of which use the “Positive & Encouraging K-Love” identity. A one-tenth gain to 3.0 (6+) in October by  KXXM interrupted five April through September decreases that accounted for an overall -2.1 (5.0 – 4.9 – 4.4 – 3.7 – 3.3 – 2.9, 6+). In November, the iHeartMedia CHR piles on another seven-tenths to 3.7 (6+) as “96.1 Now – San Antonio’s #1 Hit Music Station” zooms from #16 to #11. Down or flat the past three sweeps for an overall -1.6 (4.9 – 4.0 – 3.3 – 3.3, 6+), Cox Media Group hot AC KSMG “Magic 105.3 – Today’s Best Music” improves by six-tenths to 3.9 and jumps into the top ten (#14 to #10). By notching a one-half share gain (4.9 – 5.4, 6+), co-owned classic rock KTKX “106.7 The Eagle” elevates from fourth to third.  Completely erasing October’s six-tenths’ gain (3.2 – 3.8 – 3.2, 6+), Univision Radio’s KXTN “107.5 Tejano & Proud” tumbles from #10 to #14; October’s 3.8 was its best 6+-performance since February’s 4.0. While it remains at #7, Cox Media Group’s KISS “Rocks San Antonio” has its consecutive string of up or flat moves that yielded an overall +1.0 stall at four (3.6 – 3.6 – 3.9 – 4.5 – 4.6, 6+).

Pittsburgh Spoken-Word Formats – Notwithstanding that it is off one-tenth, Entercom news/talk KDKA-AM manages to improve from ninth to eighth. The March through November high/low range for “News Radio 1020” is 4.6/4.0: (4.6 – 4.5 – 4.2 – 4.4 – 4.2 – 4.0 – 4.0 – 4.6, 6+).

After picking up three-tenths in October, co-owned sports talk KDKA-FM “93.7 The Fan” regresses by seven-tenths in November (6.4 – 5.7, fourth to sixth, 6+). “The Fan” was +2.0 in April (5.8 – 7.8, 6+); -2.0 in three straight May – June – July declines (7.8 – 7.4 – 6.5 – 5.8, 6+); +1.4 in August (5.8 – 7.2, 6+); and -1.1 in September. Unchanged at .2 (#23, 6+), iHeartMedia sports talk WBGG “970 AM – ESPN Pittsburgh” has notched either a .1 (6+) or a .2 (6+) in each of the last 19 ratings periods.

A loss of two-tenths to 3.2 (#11 to #13, 6+) by Essential Public Media news/talk WESA “90.5 Pittsburgh’s NPR Station” ends three straight positive spikes that produced a cumulative +1.4 (2.0 – 2.4 – 3.0 – 3.4, 6+).

Pittsburgh Music Formats – Displaying its best 6+ showing since January (6.8, as well), Renda Broadcasting adult contemporary WSHH is an overall +1.5 as the result of three upticks in a row (5.3 – 5.6 – 6.3 – 6.8, 6+). “Wish 99.7” progresses from fifth to fourth. Owing to three straight gains (4.0 – 4.3 – 4.7 – 4.9, 6+), iHeartMedia alternative WXDX “105.9 The X” is an overall +.9, as the flagship of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins inches up from eighth to seventh. Level at 9.5 (6+) after October’s loss of seven-tenths, classic hits-oldies sibling WWSW “94.5 – 3WS” is on top for the 21st consecutive ratings period. Anchored in the runner-up slot for the 11th successive sweep, co-owned rocker WDVE posts its third bump in succession for a +1.0 (7.7 – 8.0 – 8.3 – 8.7, 6+); WDVE was off eight-tenths in August. Led by Entercom-owned WDSY “Y-108” Pittsburgh’s Country (4.8 – 4.4, -.4, seventh to ninth, 6+) and iHeartMedia’s WPGB “Big 104.7 – Pittsburgh’s #1 For New Country” (3.4 – 3.7 (+.3, steady at #11, 6+), four mainstream country facilities appear in the top twenty. The other members of that quartet are Forever Media siblings, both using the “Froggy” identity WOGG (1.6 – 1.9, +.3, #16 to #14, 6+) and WOGI (.9 – 1.0, +.1, #20, 6+). Off one-half share to 7.0, its lowest 6+-showing since June (7.0, as well), Steel City Media adult hits WRRK “96.9 Bob FM – We Play Anything” carries on at #3. The January through November (6+) high/low range for “Bob” is 7.9/7.0.

Sacramento Spoken-Word Formats – Repeating at #2, iHeartMedia-owned news/talk KFBK “Sacramento’s News, Weather, and Traffic Station” dips two-tenths (7.0 – 6.8, 6+) following October’s massive +1.4. Immediately prior to the October ratings period, KFBK hadn’t posted an increase in the eight previous reports resulting in an overall -3.0 (8.6 – 8.1 – 8.1 – 7.8 – 6.7 – 6.3 – 6.0 – 6.0 – 5.6, 6+). Co-owned KSTE “Talk 650” is a collective +.7 via three consecutive sweeps without a loss (2.3 – 2.6 – 3.0- 3.0, 6+) and continues at #13.

Doubling (+.8) its 6+-share since August (.8 – 1.2 – 1.5 – 1.6, 6+), Entercom’s KIFM-AM carries on at #19. Just before this particular streak, “ESPN Radio 1320” lost 50% of its 6+-share (-.8) in three straight decreases (1.6 – 1.4 – 1.1 – .8, 6+). For the third sweep in succession, Bonneville’s KHTK “Sports 1140” has a fluctuation of one-tenth, 1.1 – 1.2, 1.2 – 1.3, 1.3 – 1.2 (6+) and is flat at #21.

As noted above, KFBK notched a huge (+1.4) October gain. It is the turn this time for news/talk KXJZ (+1.1, third to second). Moreover, the Capital Public Radio outlet is without a loss for the fourth straight time for an overall +1.9 since July (4.5 – 5.1 – 5.3 – 5.3 – 6.4, 6+) and KXJZ crosses the six-share threshold (6.4, 6+) for the first time in its PPM-history. This is the fifth occurrence in the last nine sweeps that Northern California Public Broadcasting’s KQEI has recorded a .6 (flat at #26, 6+).

Sacramento Music Formats – A combined -.9 in August and September (5.1 – 4.4 – 4.2, 6+), Bonneville’s KNCI completely erases that deficit in October and November (4.2 – 4.3 – 5.1, +.9, 6+) as “New Country 105.1” jumps from eighth to fifth. At the same time, iHeartMedia’s KBEB “92.5 The Bull – #1 for New Country” is up two-tenths in consecutive sweeps (2.1 – 2.3 – 2.5, steady at #14, 6+), while the market’s other country outlet, Entravision Communications-owned KNTY “101.9 The Wolf,” is flat at 2.0 (#16 to #17, 6+). By gaining six-tenths (4.4 – 5.0, steady at #6, 6+), Entercom CHR KUDL “106.5 The End” logs its best 6+-showing since May’s 5.6. Improving by one-half share each are KUDL’s rhythmic CHR cluster-mate KSFM (3.2 – 3.7, #12 to #11, 6+) and iHeartMedia urban-rhythmic oldies KHYL “V-101.1” (3.9 – 4.4, #10 to #8, 6+), which has its best 6+-stat (4.4) since August 2015’s 4.7. Notwithstanding that is a cumulative -1.6 in back-to-back sweeps (9.7 – 9.2 – 8.1, 6+) and has its lowest 6+-share (8.1) since April’s 8.0, Entercom-owned KSEG “96.9 The Eagle – Sacramento’s Classic Rock” is #1 for the 10th straight time. “The Eagle” was +1.0 (May); +.9 (June); -.9 (July); +.6 (September); -.5 (October); and now -1.1 (November). Up two-tenths and flat at #14 (2.3 – 2.5, 6+), Entravision Communications rhythmic CHR KHHM “Hot 103.5” is within 2.2 – 2.9 range for the 13th consecutive sweep. As a result of having its 6+-share sliced in half (1.8 – .9, -.9, 6+), Educational Media Foundation contemporary Christian KLVB “Positive & Encouraging K-Love” drifts from the top twenty (#18 to #25). In three down or flat months in succession (4.2 – 4.0 – 4.0 – 3.4, 6+), Entercom-owned KKDO is a combined -.8. “Alt 94.7 – Sacramento’s Alternative” exits the top ten (#9 to #12) with its lowest 6+-share since May (3.4, as well).

Salt Lake City Spoken-Word Formats – It’s another dramatic fluctuation for Bonneville’s KSL, which follows October’s massive +2.4 to 7.2, its highest 6+-share since April’s 8.1, with a -1.8 to 5.4 (6+). Consequently, “News Radio 102.7 FM & 1160 AM” has a one-month stay at #1 and slumps to fifth. Prior to October, the last time KSL reached #1 was in April. By picking up four-tenths in August, KSL pulled the plug on three consecutive declines that accounted for a -3.5 (8.1 – 5.2 – 4.9 – 4.6, 6+). Meanwhile, iHeartMedia’s KNRS “Talk Radio 105.9 – Listen And You’ll Know” is a combined +1.0 in October and November (3.9 – 4.7 – 4.9, level at #7, 6+) and has its strongest 6+-showing (4.9) since March 2017’s 5.6.

The August 2018 – November 2018 topline for Broadway Media-owned KALL is 1.7 – 1.8 – 1.8 – 1.7 (6+), with “ESPN 700 – Utah’s #1 Sports Talk” remaining at #21. Immediately in advance of that, KALL was an overall +.5 via four consecutive positive or flat moves (1.4 – 1.5 – 1.5 – 1.9 – 1.9, 6+).

A collective -.8 in September and October (3.5 – 3.0 – 2.7, 6+), University of Utah news/talk KUER picks up one-tenth in November to 2.8 (#15 to #13, 6+). Brigham Young University news/talk KUMT debuted in September with a .9 (6+); was off six-tenths in October to .3 (#26 to #27, 6+); and disappears in November.

Salt Lake City Music Formats – Locked in a three-way tie at #3 in October, iHeartMedia-owned classic hits-oldies KODJ “94.1 Salt Lake’s Greatest Hits” roars back from a -1.1 (6.7 – 5.6, 6+) with a +1.5 to 7.1 (6+) and takes over at #1. Previously this calendar year, KODJ held sole possession of the top spot or was tied for the lead in June, July, August, and September. Its gain of three-tenths in September curtailed three straight decreases that accounted for a loss of one-half share (6.9 – 6.8 – 6.7 – 6.4, 6+). Part of that October three-way scrum at #3 was KODJ’s format rival, Bonneville’s KRSP “103.5 The Arrow,” which improves by one-half share to 6.1, progressing to the runner-up slot. “The Arrow” had been off four-tenths in three straight (mostly) flat or down moves (6.0 – 5.6 – 5.6 – 5.6, 6+). Notching one-half share October – November gains as well are independent KSOP-FM “Z-104 Utah’s #1 Country” (4.2 – 4.7, ninth to eighth, 6+) and Broadway Media alternative KXRK “X-96 Utah’s Original Alternative” (3.8 – 4.3, 6+). “Z 104” has its highest 6+ share since March (4.7, as well), while “X-96” cracks the top ten (#12 to #10). Even though Cumulus Media adult contemporary KBEE is a collective +1.8 via three straight upticks (2.7 – 3.6 – 4.3 – 4.5, 6+), “B-98.7 Today’s Hits & Yesterday’s Favorites” backslides from eighth to ninth. “B-98.7” gained six-tenths between April and July (2.7 – 3.3 – 3.3 – 3.3, 6+). On the other hand, co-owned country KUBL “K-Bull 93” is an overall -2.1 in four consecutive decreases (5.9 – 5.7 – 4.2 – 4.0 – 3.8, 6+) and departs the top ten (#10 to #12).

Las Vegas Spoken-Word Formats – As it posts a 1.9 for the third time in the last four sweeps (1.9 – 1.8 – 1.9 – 1.9, 6+), Entercom’s KXNT falls out of the top twenty (#20 to #21). Prior to gaining two-tenths in August, “News Talk Radio 840” had been down or flat the previous three ratings periods for a net loss of four-tenths (2.1 – 2.0 – 1.7 – 1.7, 6+). In a somewhat similar vein, Beasley Media Group news/talk KDWN “AM 720 Where Las Vegas Comes to Talk” records a 1.1 (6+) for the fourth time in the last seven survey periods, 1.1 – 1.0 – 1.1 – 1.1 – 1.0 – 1.3 – 1.1 (6+), dropping from #24 to #25.

Doubling (+.5) its 6+ share through four up or flat trends (.5 – .6 – .9 – .9 – 1.0, 6+), Lotus Communications sports talk KWWN “ESPN Radio 1100” advances from #26 to #25.

In addition to being an overall +1.3 in six consecutive positive spikes (2.0 – 2.4 – 2.6 – 2.8 – 2.9 – 3.2 – 3.3, 6+), Nevada Public Radio’s KNPR enters the top ten (#11 to #10).

Las Vegas Music Formats – Within 2.4 – 2.8 range (6+) in each of the last seven reports (2.8 – 2.6 – 2.4 – 2.4 – 2.6   – 2.7 – 2.4, 6+), Kemp Broadcasting rhythmic CHR KVEG explodes with a +.9 to 3.3, its strongest 6+-stat since March (3.3, as well), and “Hot 97.5” zooms into the top ten (#16 to #10). Trending .8 – .8 – .9 – .8 – .9 (June through October, 6+), University of Nevada’s KUNV “91.5 Jazz & More” logs a +.7 to 1.6, reaching the one-share level (6+) for the first time since May (1.1). Not only does Lotus Communications’ KXPT advance from fifth to third, “97.1 The Point – #1 For Classic Rock” is an overall +1.8 in five straight positive spikes (3.7 – 3.9 – 4.5 – 4.9 – 5.0 – 5.5, 6+) and has its best 6+-performance (5.5) in just over two years (5.9, October 2016). On top for the third month in a row is iHeartMedia adult contemporary KSNE “Sunny 106.5 Better Music for a Better Workday,” which basically stabilizes (8.4 – 8.3, -1, 6+), after September and October’s combined +2.1 (6.3 – 7.5 – 8.4, 6+). October’s (8.4) represents the highest 6+-share for “Sunny” since “Holiday” 2017’s 12.5. This calendar year, KSNE has been on top in March, May, June, July, September, October, and November. Even though an increase of two-tenths to 1.8 (6+) by Univision Radio regional Mexican KISF suspends three negative moves in succession that accounted for a -1.2 (2.8 – 2.4 – 2.3 – 1.6, 6+), “103.5 Zona Mx” backslides from #21 to #22. On the heels of October’s -.7, Beasley Media Group urban-rhythmic oldies KOAS “Old School 105.7” erodes by another eight-tenths in November (5.1 – 4.3, fourth to sixth, 6+). As it entered the October ratings period, “Old School 105.7” was a cumulative +1.7 in five straight increases (4.1 – 4.3 – 4.7 – 4.9 – 5.1 – 5.8, 6+). Surrendering all of October’s +.5 and one-tenth more (3.8 – 3.2, -.6, 6+), Faith Communications’ contemporary Christian KSOS “SOS Radio” falls from the top ten (#10 to #12). October’s 3.8 was its highest 6+-stat since January’s 3.9. Faltering by six-tenths as well is Entercom rhythmic hot AC KXQQ “Q-100.5” (seventh to ninth), which is a collective -1.3 in three losses in succession (4.9 – 4.5 – 4.2 – 3.6, 6+). Co-owned hot AC KMXB “Mix 94.1” (third to fourth) drops one-half share to 5.4, its lowest 6+-showing since February (5.4, as well).

Cincinnati Spoken-Word Formats – Notwithstanding that WLW (10.8 – 10.0, 6+) remains at #1 for the sixth consecutive sweep, it has been a rollercoaster ride for the iHeartMedia news/talk outlet. Some recent fluctuations for WLW include: a combined +2.0 (January and February); -1.0 (March); +1.6 (April); -1.2 (May); -1.4 (September); +1.7 (October); and now -.8 (November). October’s 10.8 was the highest 6+-share in more than two years (10.8, as well, in June 2016) for the flagship of MLB’s Reds and NFL’s Bengals. Co-owned WKRC “55 KRC The Talk Station in Cincinnati” has an up/down July through November topline of 3.6 – 4.1 – 3.7 – 4.0 – 3.6 (6+) and drops from ninth to tenth. July’s increase of eight-tenths halted four straight monthly reports without an increase for a collective -1.0 (3.8 – 3.7 – 3.3 – 3.0 – 2.8, 6+).

Following October’s one-half share gain to 1.4 – its best 6+-stat since May (1.4, as well) – sports talk sibling WCKY “Cincinnati’s ESPN 1530” levels out at 1.4 and repeats at #17.

Off a collective four-tenths in three successive sweeps without an increase (3.5 – 3.5 – 3.3 – 3.1, 6+), Cincinnati Public Radio news/talk WVXU is back to July’s 3.1 (6+) and carries on at #12.

Cincinnati Music Formats – Having logged six straight down or flat sweeps that resulted in an overall -1.5 (4.9 – 4.2 – 4.2 – 3.9 – 3.9 – 3.9 – 3.4, 6+), iHeartMedia CHR WKFS erases nearly half the loss with a gain of seven-tenths (4.1, 6+). “Kiss 107.1 Cincinnati’s #1 Hit Music Station” is back in the top ten (#11 to #9). Although it is without an increase for the third successive time for a collective -1.3 (7.9 – 7.4 – 6.6 – 6.6, 6+),  Hubbard hot AC WKRQ “Q-102 Cincinnati’s Hit Music” remains in fourth-place. Anchored at #3, country sibling WUBE “B-105” is up one full-share via three straight up or flat monthlies (7.9 – 8.3 – 8.9 – 8.9,  6+). This is the strongest 6+-stat for “B-105” in more than two years (8.9, as well, August 2016). Elsewhere in the market’s country format, Cumulus Media’s WNNF “94.1 Nash-FM” picks up one-tenth (1.8 – 1.9, #15 to #16, 6+), while WUBE cluster-mate WYGY “97.3 The Wolf” (#18) improves by two-tenths to 1.0, its best 6+-stat since February (1.0, as well). “The Wolf” had recorded either a .8 (6+) or a .9 (6+) in each sweep between March and October. In August, WDBZ registered a .9 (6+) to finish at #20, but the Radio One urban-rhythmic oldies is unlisted for the third month in a row. At #19 in October (1.2, 6+), Educational Community Radio’s WOBO “The Station With Something For Everyone” vanishes in November.

Orlando Spoken-Word Formats – Unchanged in eighth-place, Cox Media Group news/talk WDBO-FM “News 96.5” is an overall +1.9 in five consecutive increases (3.3 – 3.7 – 3.8 – 4.1 – 5.1 – 5.2, 6+) and has its best 6+-performance (5.2) in more than a year (6.1, September 2017). Conversely, iHeartMedia news/talk WTKS “Real Radio 104.1 – We Say What We Want” has lost a collective eight-tenths in three straight declines (4.7 – 4.6 – 4.5 – 3.9, 6+) and continues at #11. Its +1.0 in August suspended three straight decreases that resulted in a -1.8 (5.5 – 5.3 – 4.0 – 3.7, 6+). Having nearly doubled (+1.2) its 6+-share as the result of four successive sweeps without a loss (1.5 – 1.5 – 1.9 – 2.1 – 2.7, 6+), iHeartMedia news/talk WFLF surrenders three-tenths to 2.4 (6+) yet improves from #15 to #14.

At the same time that Cox Media Group sports talk WDBO-AM “ESPN 580 Orlando” gains three-tenths to 1.4 (#20 to a three-way tie at #17), iHeartMedia’s similarly-formatted WYGM “FM 96.9 The Game – Orlando’s Sports Leader” drops two-tenths in consecutive sweeps (1.3 – 1.1 – .9, 6+) and departs the top twenty (#20 to #21).

Anchored at #12, Community Communications’ news/talk WMFE “90.7 Public Radio for Central Florida” has been +.5 (September); -.7 (October); and now +.3 in November (3.3 – 3.6, 6+).

Orlando Music Formats – Not only is iHeartMedia Spanish tropical WRUM on top for the 11th straight time, “Rumba 100” hangs out a +.8 to 8.9 (6+), thus ending at three its consecutive string of downturns that resulted in an overall -3.5 (11.6 – 10.1 – 8.2 – 8.1, 6+). April 2017s 12.8 is the best-ever 6+-share in the station’s PPM-history. Moreover, “Rumba” breaks the October tie at #1 with co-owned CHR WXXL, which gains one-tenth (8.1 – 8.2, 6+), but segues to the runner-up slot. A one-half share September increase by “XL-106.7 Orlando’s #1 Hit Music Station” halted three downward moves in a row that accounted for a collective -1.7 (8.9 – 8.4 – 7.8 – 7.2, 6+). By posting an increase of seven-tenths to 7.1 (6+), its highest 6+-stat in exactly one year (8.1, November 2017), Cox Media Group-owned WMMO advances from fourth to third. WMMO was locked on 6.6 (6+) in July, August, and September, before dropping to 6.4 (6+) in October. Two-tenths behind “98.9 Orlando’s Classic Hits” is urban AC cluster-mate WCFB “Star 94.5 – Orlando’s Only R&B,” which is an overall +1.4 in five straight sweeps without a loss (5.5 – 6.0 – 6.3 – 6.3 – 6.8 – 6.9, third to fourth, 6+). Flat at #7, Entercom hot AC WOMX “Mix 105.1” records its third sweep in a row without a loss and is a modest +.2 in that stretch (5.2 – 5.3 – 5.3 – 5.4, 6+). Off a collective one-half share as a result of being down or flat for the fourth ratings period in a row (3.4 – 3.2 – 2.9 – 2.9 – 2.9, 6+), iHeartMedia’s WJRR “101.1 Orlando’s Rock Station” continues at #13.

Cleveland Spoken-Word Formats – On the heels of its October gain of eight-tenths, iHeartMedia news/talk WTAM “1100 Cleveland’s News Radio” forfeits one-half share (6.8 – 6.3, 6+) and drops from a four-way tie at #3 to #5. October’s +.8 halted four successive sweeps without an increase for a collective -.6 (6.6 – 6.5 – 6.4 – 6.0 – 6.0, 6+).

Meanwhile, Entercom’s WKRK “Sports Radio 92.3 The Fan” (steady at #9) is up an overall two full-shares via five successive improvements (3.4 – 3.5 – 3.8 – 4.7 – 5.1 – 5.4, 6+), directly following a combined -1.8 in three straight (March through June) setbacks (5.2 – 4.4 – 4.2 – 3.4, 6+).

 Off four-tenths in October, Ideastream-owned news/talk outlet WCPN erases half that decrease in November with a gain of two-tenths (2.8 – 3.0, 6+) and continues at #13; September’s 3.2 was its best 6+-showing since February’s 3.6.

Cleveland Music Formats – On top of being a collective +2.8 in three upticks in succession (6.0 – 6.5 – 7.5 – 8.8, 6+), WZAK marches from second to first. It is quite a turnaround for the Radio One urban AC, which had lost roughly 40% (-4.1) of its 6+ AQH share in five straight down or flat trends between March and August (10.1 – 9.6 – 8.1 – 6.8 – 6.8 – 6.0, 6+). Ousted from the top spot after five straight months at #1 is iHeartMedia classic hits-oldies WMJI “Cleveland’s Greatest Hits,” which – despite registering a +.4 (7.8 – 8.2, 6+) – shifts to #2. Its October loss of -1.5 suspended four straight improvements that – ironically – generated an overall +1.5 (7.8 – 8.4 – 8.5 – 8.7 – 9.3, 6+). Among WMJI’s fluctuations this calendar year are: -1.9 (January); +1.9 (February); -2.0 (March); +1.0 (April); -1.5 (May); +.6 (June); +.6 (September); and -1.5 (October). CHR cluster-mate WAKS “96.5 Kiss FM – Cleveland’s #1 Hit Music Station” completely wipes away October’s one-half share decrease with a like-margin November increase (3.9 – 3.4 – 3.9, 6+) but remains at #12. Dropping from third to fourth, co-owned WGAR “99.5 Cleveland’s #1 For New Country” is a collective -1.6 in three successive decreases (8.1 – 7.2 – 6.8 – 6.5, 6+). Over in the Entercom cluster, WNCX “98.5 Cleveland’s Classic Rock” (third to fifth) is an overall -2.1 (8.4 – 6.9 – 6.8 – 6.3, 6+) via three straight dips and has its lowest 6+-stat since April’s 6.0, while adult contemporary sibling WDOK “Cleveland’s Star 102.” is -.8 in three negative moves in a row (6.4- 6.2 – 6.0 – 5.6, seventh to eighth, 6+).

Kansas City Spoken-Word Formats – Tacking on four-tenths to October’s +.3 (4.4 – 4.7 – 4.8, 6+), Entercom news/talk KMBZ-FM “98.1 News-Traffic-Weather” pushes ahead from sixth to fourth. An August gain of seven-tenths interrupted five straight February through July decreases that accounted for a -1.7 (5.6 – 5.4 – 5.3 – 4.8 – 4.1 – 3.9, 6+). Co-owned KMBZ-AM “Talk 980,” which was up four-tenths in October, is flat at 2.6 (6+), but slips from #18 to #19. When Cumulus Media’s KCMO-AM picked up one-tenth in October to .7 (6+), it ended three down or flat reports that accounted for a loss of two-tenths (.7 – .6 – .6 – .5, 6+); however, “Talk Radio 710 AM” returns that one-tenth in November (.6, flat at #23, 6+).

Winning ways continue for Union Broadcasting’s WHB “Sports Radio 810,” which has more than doubled (+2.2) its 6+-share in six straight upticks (2.0 – 2.1 – 2.4 – 2.6 – 2.8 – 4.0 – 4.2, tenth to ninth, 6+). WHB was -.9 in February; +.9 in March; an overall -2.0 in April and May (4.0 – 2.9 – 2.0, 6+); and +1.2 in October. Forfeiting all but one-tenth of October’s +.4 (3.5 – 3.2, -.3, 6+), Entercom’s KCSP “610 Sports Radio” slumps from #14 to #17.

In October, KCUR returned the three-tenths it gained in September (3.0 – 3.3 – 3.0, 6+), but in November, the University of Missouri news/talk outlet posts a one-half share increase to 3.5 (#15 to #14, 6+).

Kansas City Music Formats – By adding six-tenths to October’s +.1 (2.7 – 2.8 – 3.4, 6+), Cumulus Media urban AC KMJK “Magic 107.3 – Kansas City’s Best Mix of R&B” shifts from #16 to #15. Off one-half share in October, Entercom alternative KRBZ “96.5 The Buzz” jumps six-tenths as well (2.7 – 3.3, #17 to #16, 6+) and has its best 6+-showing (3.3) since April’s 3.9. Hot AC cluster-mate KZPT “99.7 The Point,” a collective -.8 in four straight down or flat moves (4.6 – 4.6 – 4.5 – 4.3 – 3.8, 6+), adds one-tenth to 3.9 but moves from #12 to #13. This is yet another extremely powerful report card for Cumulus Media’s KCFX “101 The Fox – Kansas City’s Classic Rock Station,” which is #1 for the sixth time in a row and an overall +2.7 in six straight sweeps without a loss (7.0 – 7.2 – 7.2 – 7.8 – 8.8 – 9.6 – 9.7, 6+). Furthermore, this (9.7) is the highest 6+-stat for the Kansas City Chiefs’ flagship since July 2017’s 10.3. On the other hand though, classic hits-oldies sibling KCMO-FM “94.9 Kansas City’s Greatest Hits” is a combined -3.1 in eight successive March through November declines (8.1 – 7.7 – 7.2 – 7.1 – 6.8 – 6.4 – 6.3 – 5.4 – 5.0, 6+), dipping from fourth to sixth. “Kansas City’s Greatest Hits” was #1 in March, April, and May. Despite forfeiting one-half share to 7.0 (6+), thus curtailing three straight upticks for a cumulative +2.0 (5.5 – 6.5 – 7.3 – 7.5, 6+), Entercom-owned KQRC “98.9 The Rock” advances from third to second. Down one-half share as well is Steel City Media adult contemporary KCKC “KC-102.1 Today’s Best Variety” (4.7 – 4.2, sixth to ninth, 6+). A mere two-tenths separates the market’s three country outlets. Specifically, by posting a gain of three-tenths to 4.3 (6+), Entercom’s WDAF not only zooms from tenth to seventh, “106.5 The Wolf” pulls the plug on six straight sweeps without an increase for an overall loss of nine-tenths (4.9 – 4.8 – 4.6 – 4.6 – 4.6 – 4.3 – 4.0, 6+). It is tied at #7 with Steel City Media’s KBEQ, which is a combined -1.3 in October and November (5.6 – 4.4 – 4.3, 6+). Nonetheless, “Q-104 New Hit Country,” which gained six-tenths in September, progresses from ninth (to seventh). Meanwhile, co-owned KFKF “Country 94.1” is a combined -2.1 as a result of three downturns in succession (6.2 – 5.3 – 4.5 – 4.1, 6+) and exits the top ten (#8 to #11).

Columbus Spoken-Word Formats – In three straight positive spikes (5.4 – 5.5 – 6.1 – 6.3, 6+), iHeartMedia news/talk WTVN “News Radio 610” is an overall +.9 and progresses from fifth to fourth.

Seventh-ranked in January with a 4.4 (6+) – but then vanishing from print – RadiOhio sports talk outlet WBNS-FM “Sports Radio 97.1 The Fan” reappeared in October with +1.1 (5.6 – 6.7, #4, 6+). The flagship of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets relinquishes four-tenths in November to 6.3 (6+) but remains at #4. Answering October’s -1.1 with a November gain of one-half share (3.5 – 4.0, 6+), Ohio State University news/talk WOSU inches up from ninth to eighth. Immediately prior to the October sweep, WOSU had a net gain of seven-tenths via three straight up or flat monthlies (3.9 – 3.9 – 4.5 – 4.6, 6+).

Columbus Music Formats – In addition to being a combined +1.1 in three straight increases (2.7 – 2.8 – 3.0 – 3.8, 6+), Radio One’s WCKX “Power 107.5” cracks the top ten (#12 to #9) with its best 6+-showing since September 2017 (3.8, as well). By duplicating October’s +.6 (6.5 – 7.1 – 7.7, 6+), Saga Communications’ WLVQ “Q-FM 96 – Iconic Rock” marches from third to second and displays its best 6+-stat since January 2017’s 7.9. Despite being a cumulative +1.1 in four up or flat trends in a row (2.4 – 2.6 – 2.6 – 3.3 – 3.5, 6+), iHeartMedia urban contemporary WZCB “106.7 The Beat” backslides from #10 to #11. Albeit that it has eroded by -3.3 in four straight setbacks (16.3 – 15.1 – 15.0 – 14.5 – 13.0, 6+), co-owned WCOL is #1 for the 11th sweep in a row and has been in double-digits (6+) each ratings period since June 2017. When “92.3 Columbus’ #1 For New Country” was -1.2 in August, it concluded five consecutive increases for an overall +4.0 (12.3 – 13.4 – 14.4 – 14.5 – 15.7 – 16.3, 6+). Among the major fluctuations for “92.3 Columbus’ #1 For New Country” this calendar year are +3.1 (January); -1.7 (February); +1.1 (March); +1.0 (April); +1.2 (June); +.6 (July); 1.2 (August); -.5 (October); and -1.5 (November). Following 10 consecutive reports at #2, WCOL’s CHR sibling, WNCI “97.9 Columbus’ Hit Music Station” (7.8 – 7.1, -.7, 6+), falls to #3. WNCI was +1.3 in June; a collective -1.8 in July and August (10.7 – 10.0 – 8.9, 6+); +.5 (September); -1.6 (October); and -.7 (November). Adult hits cluster-mate WODC is an overall -1.7 as a result of three consecutive dips (6.7 – 6.4 – 5.3 – 5.0, 6+), but “93.3 The Bus – We Play Anything” carries on at #7. This present streak immediately follows four consecutive improvements that netted a +1.6 (5.1 – 5.6 – 5.7 – 5.9 – 6.7, 6+).

Kim Carrigan Out as Kuhner Returns to AMs on WRKO, Boston; Doug “V.B.” Goudie Moves to Middays. The new program schedule on iHeartMedia’s news/talk WRKO, Boston launches on Monday (11/26) and in morning drive will be “The Kuhner Report” with Jeff Kuhner.  He moves from the 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm daypart and replaces the “Boston’s Morning Show” with Kim Carrigan and Doug “V.B.” Goudie.  V.B. moves to the early afternoon show hosting “V.B. in the Middle” and Carrigan apparently departs.  The station says in a press release, “‘The Kuhner Report’ will continue to cover today’s latest headlines and breaking political news.  Conservative Jeff Kuhner will continue to tackle cutting-edge, hot-button, political, social and foreign policy issues.  ‘V.B. in the Middle’ will also discuss today’s biggest political headlines, showcasing V.B.’s humorous, creative opinions as well as his connection with the Boston listeners.”  WRKO program director and iHeartMedia Boston VP of news/talk Robert Sanchez adds, “Jeff Kuhner believes what he says and says what he believes.  Bostonians need an energy burst in the morning and with Jeff, their commute just erupted.”

Alan Stock to Exit Afternoon Drive on KXNT, Las Vegas for New Role at Station.  Although still not confirmed at press time, TALKERS sources indicate that a programming shuffle is about to take place at Entercom’s heritage talk outlet in Las Vegas, KXNT with the official announcement coming this week.  Local market mainstay (and TALKERS Heavy Hundred luminary) Alan Stock will move out of the 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm afternoon drive position to be replaced by a yet-to-be-named syndicated program and play a reduced, but still-important, role at the station as its “commentator.”  Stock will deliver a live, daily, early afternoon, short-form political commentary that will be replayed several times later in the day.  Word is that Stock’s on-air presence at the station will also include a live, long-form weekend program to be announced at a later date.  Further unconfirmed rumors indicate Stock might be replaced in afternoon drive by Radio America syndicated host Chad Benson.  Stay tuned!

iHeartMedia Files Fifth Amended Joint Chapter 11 Plan with Bankruptcy Court. December 11 is still the date that iHeartMedia will be in Bankruptcy Court in Houston for confirmation of its Chapter 11 reorganization plan.  Ahead of that, the company has filed the Fifth Amended Joint Chapter 11 Plan with the court and the deadline for filing objections with this latest plan is November 28.  The plan outlines the New Term Loans to be issued by parent company iHeartCommunications. They include: an Asset-Based Loan of $450 million with a five-year term; a Term Loan of $3.5 billion with a seven-year term; $800 million in secured notes with a seven-year term; and $1.45 billion in unsecured bonds with an eight-year term.  The Plan also lays out the salaries of chairman and CEO Bob Pittman and COO and CFO Rich Bressler – both of whom who will make $1.5 million in salary per year and whose annual Target Bonuses will be $3.4 million.  Note that these figures are for the year 2019 and beyond that changes in the employment terms are at the discretion of the board of directors.

iHeartMedia to Acquire Jelli Inc. This move takes the relationship between iHeartMedia and cloud-based ad platform developer Jelli Inc. to the next level, with iHM acquiring the company whose technology powers its SoundPoint programmatic platform.  iHeartMedia goes on to say that this deal will enable it to “further leverage Jelli’s assets to continue to create for brands a digital-compatible buying platform for broadcast radio that includes targeting and creative optimization based on data and attribution tools compatible with the offerings of the major digital players. In addition, ‘Expressway from Katz,’ the industry’s programmatic buying ad exchange for the country’s leading radio groups, will continue to remain independently run by Katz, powered by Jelli.”  Brian Kaminsky, president of SmartAudio and analytics group for iHeartMedia, says, “Facebook and Google pioneered a new way for advertisers to interface with media partners to improve targetability, the ease of buying and measurement of results, and our programmatic platform puts us in the position to participate in the modern data driven ecosystem for our broadcast radio audience as well as our digital audiences.  We have been excited by the advances we made with Jelli as our partner and the acceptance from our advertising partners.”  The press release makes no mention of the terms of the deal, but says that “Jelli will continue to operate as a company within iHeartMedia, Inc. led by president and CEO Michael Dougherty and his team.  The Jelli division will continue to be based in Silicon Valley and will become iHeartMedia’s primary ad technology operation.”

Larry King Weighs In with Strong Opinions on Jim Acosta Story and the State of Journalism.  Veteran radio and TV talk show host Larry King dropped in on Friday (11/16) for an unplanned chat during the recording of this past weekend’s RT America show “The Big Picture with Holland Cooke.”  The impromptu, seven-minute interview took place while King was visiting the network’s Washington, DC headquarters.  During the provocative conversation that delved into the state and future of journalism in America, King candidly described the daily briefings and press conferences held at the Donald Trump White House as “a sideshow… reality TV… that has nothing to do with governing.”  King elaborated, “The whole thing is a show and when Jim Acosta [engaged in the argument with the President] he became part of the show.  Trump loves that!”  To view the entire conversation between King and Cooke, please click here.  King hosts a nightly show, “Larry King Now,” on RT America from his studio in Los Angeles via a licensing agreement between the network and his program that originates on Ora TV and is also seen on Hulu. Hoffman to Lead Entercom Indianapolis. Rising from vice president of sales for Entercom’s Indianapolis cluster to SVP and general manager is Ben Hoffman.  He is now in charge of the cluster that includes sports talk WXNT-AM “CBS Sports 1430 AM,” CHR WZPL, and adult contemporary WNTR “107.9 The Mix.” Entercom region president Dave Alpert states, “For the past seven years at Entercom Indianapolis, Ben has demonstrated strong leadership qualities, high energy and the ability to be a collaborative team leader with a strong ability to win.  This is a well-deserved promotion for Ben to senior vice president and market manager and we are looking forward to the great work that Ben will continue to produce.”  Prior to joining Entercom, Hoffman served as station manager and director of sales for Townsquare Media in Fort Collins, Colorado.

St. Louis country outlet KSD-FM “93-7 The Bull” announces Gail Austin is the new program director for the station.  Back in April, Jules Riley was promoted from PD for KSD and sister classic hits KLOU to senior vice president of programming for the entire iHeartMedia St. Louis cluster.  Austin previously served with the company in the programming departments of both WQIK, Jacksonville and WCOL, Columbus.  Riley comments, “We are thrilled to welcome Gail back to iHeartmedia and excited to watch her take ‘The Bull’ to new heights.  We spoke with a number of talented programmers, but Gail’s competitive drive, creativity, and talent development made her our ideal candidate.”…..At morphing WTDY, Philadelphia, Entercom moves program director Bobby Smith off the air and “Coop & Casey” are the new morning show.  The station is transitioning into a CHR as the result of the company’s recent acquisition of hot AC WBEB “B101.1.”…..Air personality Brian Holmes exits Mid-West Family Broadcasting’s rhythmic CHR WJQM, Madison “93.1 Jamz” after three-and-a-half years hosting “The Freak Show” in the evenings…..ABC Radio is offering a Thanksgiving holiday radio show for country stations called, “Holiday Season Serenade.” The three-hour program is hosted by country star Martina McBride, who will take a look at stars’ holiday favorites including food, decorations, traditions, gifts and music.  The special will feature Christmas songs by top country artists such as Dan + ShayLittle Big Town, Lady Antebellum, Carrie Underwood, Kelsea Ballerini, Tim McGraw, Reba McEntire, Brad Paisley, Brett EldredgeChris Young, Scotty McCreery, and more.

Day Four of Where’s Kevin Klein?  The website for Entercom’s sports/guy talk/rock hybrid still lists Kevin Klein as morning drive host.  In fact, it says he’s on the air now.  But, he’s not; the station is still playing rock music as of this morning.  Klein was supposed to start his morning show stint on KEGY, San Diego “97.3 The Machine” last Thursday.  But, after the ill-fated Tweet poking fun at the city’s Coronado Bridge and its history as a site of so many suicides, Klein’s fate appears to be up in the air.  The station is the flagship for San Diego Padres baseball, but the team was upset with the Tweet as well as the station’s general tenor, according to recent local media reports.  Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler last week told the Union Tribune that the team would get through the opening series of the season and then “sit down and evaluate it,” meaning the team’s relationship with the station.  It seems safe to assume that Entercom and the Padres are still in discussions about their deal.  Programming execs may be re-evaluating the station’s image, or they could be waiting for the issue to blow over.

FNC Backs Laura Ingraham with Strong Statement. Despite reports of advertisers fleeing FOX News Channel’s “The Ingraham Angle” program starring Laura Ingraham, FNC co-president Jack Abernethy issued a strong statement in support of her.  As talk media watchers are aware, Ingraham’s social media comments about Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School senior David Hogg’s college applications drew criticism from some quarters.  Hogg posted a list of Ingraham’s advertisers, suggesting a boycott, and the feud gained momentum.  Ingraham is on a planned vacation this week, and Abernethy issued the following statement: “We cannot and will not allow voices to be censored by agenda-driven intimidation efforts.  We look forward to having Laura Ingraham back hosting her program next Monday when she returns from spring vacation with her children.”  Read Variety’s take on the matter here.

Former WWTN-FM, Nashville Morning Host Ralph Bristol to Run for Nashville Mayor.  According to a report in The Tennessean, former WWTN-FM, Nashville “SuperTalk 99.7” morning host Ralph Bristol will run as a Republican in the August election for the Nashville mayoral position.  Megan Barry recently resigned from the mayor’s office after pleading guilty to felony theft over $10,000 in connection with her extra-marital affair with her former security chief.  The 68-year-old Bristol tells that paper that he left his gig with Cumulus Media’s WWTN due to and “editorial difference of opinions” with station management.  (Brian Wilson recently assumed AM drive duties at the station.)  Bristol is opposed to a $9 billion transit bill that is intended to alleviate Nashville’s traffic problems and is banking on his opposition to the controversial proposal to fuel his campaign.

Longtime Washington News Pro Connie Lawn Dies at 73.  News pro Connie Lawn died this morning at her home in Falls Church, Virginia at age 73 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.  Lawn was the longest-credentialed member of the White House press corps, having served for 50 years.  Salem Radio Network VP/news & talk programming Tom Tradup says Lawn served with him during the 1990s at USA Radio Network and, more recently, worked for SRN News on a part-time basis.  Tradup says he told his staff, “All of us at SRN News and TOWNHALL News send our condolences to Connie’s husband, Dr. Charles Sneiderman, and to her many friends and colleagues throughout the radio news industry.  She was one-in-a-million.”

TALKERS News Notes. Tomorrow (4/4), SiriusXM is honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King on the anniversary of his assassination in Memphis 50 years ago.  SiriusXM host and human rights activist Joe Madison will broadcast his daily show live from Ben’s Chili Bowl.  The popular D.C. restaurant was frequented by Dr. King during his life and remained open during the riots that ensued following his assassination.  Other programming will take place across the satcaster’s Progress and POTUS channels…..Westwood One is presenting coverage of the 2018 Masters Tournament this Thursday through Sunday.  In addition to hole-by-hole coverage, Westwood One will present hourly updates and a nightly, half-hour preview and recap show, “The Masters Tonight.”  Bob Papa and Charlie Rymer are the anchors for live coverage from Augusta National Golf Club…..ESPN Deportes Radio (WEPN-AM, New York) launches a new, local afternoon show called “Zona NYC,” airing from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm, hosted by Tenchy Rodriquez and Nestor Rosario.   ESPN says the show will focus on the sports themes most relevant to the New York City Hispanic community.  Rodriquez brings years of experience as a reporter in the Dominican Republic covering MLB and Dominican League Baseball.  Rosario serves as Spanish-language color commentator for the New York Mets and as play-by-play announcer for the New York Giants.

Music Radio News and Career Moves.  Detroit on-air and programming pro Jessica Tyler adds music director duties for Cumulus Media’s hot AC WDVD to her responsibilities at the cluster.  Tyler continues to serve as APD, music director, and midday jock at sister country outlet WDRQ-FM “NASH FM 93.1.”  Cumulus Detroit director of programming Robby Bridges says, “Jessica’s passion for music and her relationships with artists and the label community is unparalleled.  I’m pleased she’ll work with me, APD Kendall Taylor, and our corporate team on the sound of Detroit’s 96.3 WDVD going forward!”…..At Connoisseur Media’s Connecticut operations, Allan Lamberti is named morning host at rock WFOX, Stamford/Norwalk “95.9 The FOX.”  He’s been with the cluster since 2003 in a variety of positions.  Station PD Kevin Begley says, “Allan is a walking trivia night.  He knows more about pop culture and music than anyone I’ve ever met.  Being a lifelong resident of Fairfield County, Allan is a perfect person to entertain ‘FOX’ listeners on their way to work in the morning.”  Begley adds that Lamberti leads a re-tooled lineup that includes the addition of Keith Dakin in afternoons…..Cumulus Media promotes programming pro Dayton Kane to operations manager and program director for country WPKR-FM and alternative WWWX-FM “96.9 The Fox.”  Kane was most recently program director for the company’s classic rock WKRU and classic hits WOGB in Green Bay.  Cumulus VP and market managerJohn Rowe says, “Dayton has demonstrated strong programming leadership qualities and produced outstanding results within Cumulus Wisconsin. We’re excited to expand his role and take advantage of his success and experience.”

West Coast Jock John Mack Flanagan Dies at 71.  As reported in LARP.com, John Mack Flanagan, who spent most of his career at KFRC, San Francisco – but also did part of 1975 at KHJ, Los Angeles – passed away after a battle with congestive heart failure on March 31.  In addition to his work at KFRC, he also worked on air at KWSS, San Jose; KSFO, San Francisco; KYA, San Francisco; and KBGG-FM, San Francisco.

Handling Coverage of the Vegas Concert Massacre at KXNT.  Stations across the country, as well as local Las Vegas stations, have been covering the deadly shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival since Sunday night.  CBS RADIO news/talk KXNT, Las Vegas station personality Alan Stock tells TALKERS how they covered it in the immediate 12 hours after the shooting took place.  The shooting started at 10:08 pm on Sunday night.  Stock says, “I was broadcasting from 11:00 that night through 9:00 am Monday.”  After going home to take a quick shower, Stock returned to the air from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Monday.  He says they pre-empted the Rush Limbaugh program and the Todd Schnitt show to cover the story wall-to-wall, taking a lot of calls from listeners who needed to talk about what had happened.  “Program director Andy Vierra and my producer Mark Bonilla were with me the entire time.  I could not be prouder than I am with how the station covered this the right way.”  Stock says other staffers who were indispensable during their coverage were producers Mark Thomas and Tony Valdez, news anchor Fred Halstead, and sports staffer Conrad Company.

FCC Chair Ajit Pai Confirmed by Senate. On a 52-41 vote of the U.S. Senate yesterday, FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai was confirmed to a second five-year term as chairman.  Broadcasters are thrilled that Pai will continue as chairman because he’s extremely sympathetic to their needs – far more so than previous Chairman Tom Wheeler.  Democrats, however, aren’t so hot on Pai’s goal of wrestling authority for Net Neutrality away from the FCC.   One of Wheeler’s legacy accomplishments was instituting the Commission’s Title II authority over the Internet.

Cox Ups Babin to Regional VP.  This promotion of Cox Media Group Miami VP/general manager Rob Babin to regional vice president for radio puts him in oversight of the Miami, Houston, Long Island, San Antonio and Tampa radio markets.  Cox EVP Bill Hendrich states, “During his career, Rob has been a strong leader for CMG in Orlando, Atlanta and Miami.  He has grown in leadership roles through his ability to hire and develop talented team members, create world-class work environments and deliver results.  We are fortunate to have many talented leaders at CMG to consider for critical roles like this.  Rob’s understanding of the opportunities ahead, his ability to make positive connections with people and his track record of delivering results equip him to do a fantastic job as our regional VP.”

Limbaugh’s Two-Part Appearance on Hannity’s FNC Show Tops Cable News Ratings.  Last week, Premiere Networks and FOX News Channel superstar Sean Hannity aired a two-part interview with fellow Premiere star Rush Limbaugh on his FNC program, and the Thursday and Friday Hannity programs “drew impressive ratings,” reports Premiere.  You can hear Thursday’s segment here and Friday’s segment here.

‘The Conservative Cartel’ Show to Air on The Blaze Radio Network.  The program, co-hosted by Matt Locke and Rocci Stucci is produced by Pinnacle Broadcast Holdings and the company inks a deal for its “The Conservative Cartel” show to air on The Blaze Radio Network on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon ET, starting this Saturday (10/7).   A press release states that Locke and Stucci “along with their executive producer and show owner Ron Phillips, will give The Blaze Radio Network listeners a full-throttle show and will share their thoughts and opinions regarding the political landscape of this great country.”

Tim Hill Named PD at WNKT, Columbia.  Sports media pro Tim Hill is promoted to program director for Cumulus Media’s Columbia, South Carolina sports talk WNKT “107.5 The Game.”  Hill co-hosts the station’s AM drive program – “The Early Game” – with co-host Bill Gunter.  His experience in the sports world includes more than 13 years leading sports coverage at WOLO-TV, Columbia.  Cumulus Columbia operations manager Brent Johnson comments, “I am a big Tim Hill fan, dating back to when he was sports director for a Columbia TV station. Since coming on board, he has really grown his morning show with Bill Gunter.  He has such a huge knowledge of the South Carolina sports scene and so many great ideas.”

Kramer Joins Florida Talk Stations as Programmer.  On-air pro Keith Kramer is heading to Florida to serve as program director for Magic Broadcasting’s Florida talk duo WYOO, Panama City “Talk Radio 101” and WVFT, Tallahassee “Freedom 93.3.”  Kramer has most recently been host of the afternoon program at iHeartMedia’s rock WIOT, Toledo “Rock 104.7.”  Kramer will also take over the morning drive duties at WYOO, replacing Derrell Day.

The CW Postpones iHeartRadio Music Festival Programming.  According to Variety, television network The CW is postponing the airing of two nights of footage from the recent iHeartRadio Music Festival “out of respect to the victims” of Sunday’s massacre at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival.  The iHeartRadio Music Festival took place in Las Vegas on September 22-23.  Although all the footage to be aired in the specials was shot at the T-mobile Arena, Variety reports that portions of the festival itself took place at the same location where Sunday’s concert was being held.  The shows were scheduled to air tomorrow night and Thursday night.

More Music Radio News and Career Moves.  WCVS-FM, Springfield, Illinois flips formats from classic rock to adult hits using the Envision Networks and Kroeger Media BOB FM format.  Neuhoff Media vice president of programming Mike Shamus says, “We shopped around for the best adult hits format for WCVS.  It became very clear that working with Envision Networks’ BOB-FM was going to be the easiest to use, the best branding and, overall the best product out there.”…..Milwaukee Radio Alliance-owned triple A WLUM, Milwaukee “FM 102/1” announces the lineup for its three-night “Big Snow Show.”  The event takes place at the Eagles Ballroom on 11/30, 12/1 and 12/2.  On November 30, the progam is being co-headlined by Walk the Moon and Foster the People with supporting act AJR.  December 1 will see Paramore headlining with Dashboard Confessional and The Wrecks supporting.  Finally, on December 2, Phoenix is headliner with Cold War Kids, Lord Huron, and Welshly Arms supporting…..This Friday is College Radio Day across America and the rest of the world.  It’s the day the non-profit College Radio Foundation sets aside each year to encourage those who may not have listened to college radio to give it a try.  More than 400 college radio stations are uniting to contribute content for a special, one-hour simulcast to be played across the country at 2:00 pm EDT.  Radio industry pros lending their voices in support of college radio include: Elvis Duran, Glenn Beck, Little Steven Van Zandt, Jim Kerr, Ross Brittain, Shelley Wade, TJ Taormina, and more.  College Radio Day founder Rob Quicke – chair of the Communications Department at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey – says, “We firmly believe that college radio is one of the last remaining bastions of creative radio programming, free from the constrictions of having to be commercially viable, and a place that is closely tied to the local community, on and off campus.  Only on college radio will you hear music and programming you just can’t find anywhere else, and it’s the place where the future broadcast journalists of tomorrow start their careers.”

The second of four rounds of September 2017 PPM ratings information from Nielsen Audio has been released for 12 markets including: Washington, Boston, Miami, Detroit, Seattle, Phoenix, Minneapolis, San Diego, Denver, Tampa, Baltimore, and St. Louis. TWELVE TAKEAWAYS

1) Washington, D.C. – Illustrative of how spoken-word stations dominate September happenings in the Nation’s Capital, Cumulus Media news/talk WMAL, which had been trending 3.8 – 3.5 – 3.2 (June – July – August, 6+), hangs out a +1.1 to 4.3 (6+), zooming from a three-way tie at #11 to #6. It is the best 6+-showing for WMAL since February’s 4.5. On the strength of a one-half share increase (8.9 – 9.4, 6+), Hubbard all-news WTOP marches from second – where it had been from January through August – to first. By notching a +.7 in August, WTOP halted four consecutive negative trends that yielded a collective -1.7 (9.9 – 9.1 – 8.8 – 8.7 – 8.2, 6+). Whereas 9.4 represents the station’s best 6+-stat since March (9.9), July’s 8.2 was its softest since “Holiday” 2015’s 7.5. Exiting the top spot after spending the past eight months there and dropping to second-place is American University-owned WAMU “The Mind Is Our Medium.” A combined -1.5 in back-to-back sweeps (11.5 – 11.0 – 10.0, February – March – April, 6+), WAMU rebounded in May with a +.7 to 10.7 (6+), but forfeited exactly twice that increase in June with a -1.4. February’s 11.5 matches the highest 6+-share in its PPM-history, first reached in December 2016. In four straight increases, CBS Radio Spanish tropical WLZL has more than tripled its 6+-share (.7 – 1.1 – 1.6 – 1.9 – 2.2, #19 to #18, 6+); “El Zol 107.9” last reached the two-share level (6+) in December (2.0). Occupying third-place for the ninth time in a row, Howard University-owned urban AC WHUR is unchanged at 7.1 (6+), after dropping one full-share in August, ending at five its consecutive string of up or flat trends that netted a +2.4 (5.7- 6.0 – 7.0 – 7.5 – 7.5 – 8.1, 6+). July’s 8.1 (6+) represents the station’s best-ever PPM-showing. Meanwhile, following a -1.1 in August, Radio One’s similarly-formatted WMMJ “Majic 102.3” falters by seven-tenths (4.9 – 4.2, 6+), sliding from fifth to eighth with its lowest 6+-share since December’s 3.8. Prior to August, “Majic 102.3” had been up in back-to-back sweeps for a +.7 (5.3 – 5.7 – 6.0, 6+). A combined -2.3 as the result of five consecutive negative sweeps (6.1 – 5.9 – 5.4 – 4.7 – 4.3 – 3.8, 6+), WMMJ bounced back with three straight increases for a collective +1.6 (3.8 – 4.4 – 4.9 – 5.4, 6+), but that streak concluded in March. Trending 3.5 – 3.6 – 3.8 – 3.7 – 3.8 (6+) between March and July, gospel cluster-mate WPRS gained one-half share in August, but (like WMMJ) “Praise 104.1” surrenders seven-tenths as well (4.3 – 3.6, 6+), dipping from seventh to ninth. As a result of a loss of four-tenths to 3.4 (6+), WPGC-FM ends at six its consecutive string of up or flat trends that netted one-half share (3.3 – 3.5 – 3.5 – 3.6 – 3.8 – 3.8 – 3.8, 6+) and the CBS Radio rhythmic CHR departs the top ten (#9 to #11). Tied with WPGC at #11 (down from #10 in August) is iHeartMedia’s WMZQ “98.7 – Today’s Best Country,” whose very consistent February through September 6+-line is 3.4 – 3.3 – 3.3 – 3.5 – 3.5 – 3.2 – 3.3 – 3.4. Format rival – Alpha Media’s WFLS “93.3 Today’s New Country” remains at #20 but is without an increase for the seventh straight sweep and has lost approximately half its 6+-share in that stretch (1.1 – .8 – .7 – .7 – .6 – .6 – .6, 6+).

2) Boston – Over and above erasing August’s one-half share decline by racking up a robust +.9 to 7.9 – its highest 6+-share since July 2014’s 8.2 – iHeartMedia CHR WXKS-FM “Kiss 108 – Boston’s #1 Hit Music Station” moves from the runner-up slot to #1. In five consecutive increases prior to the August sweep, “Kiss 108” was a cumulative +1.9 (5.6 – 5.7 – 6.1 – 6.2 – 6.9 – 7.5, 6+). Flat at #13, CBS Radio’s similarly formatted WODS “Amp 103.3” drops two-tenths to 2.8 (6+). In August, it halted three successive down or flat trends (3.1 – 3.0 – 2.9 – 2.9, 6+) that immediately followed four successive positive monthlies which netted four-tenths (2.7 – 2.7 – 2.8 – 2.9 – 3.1, 6+). On top the past eight months but falling to #2 in September is Beasley Media Group-owned classic hits-oldies WROR “Boston’s Classic Hits” (7.2 – 7.1, -.1, 6+). The market leader for 11 successive monthlies before being dislodged in December, WROR was +1.1 in December; -1.4 in “Holiday” 2016; +1.6 in January; +.8 in March; -.8 in April; -.6 in June; and -.5 in August. It is another successful sweep for the flagships of the Boston Red Sox (Entercom-owned sports talk WEEI-FM) and the New England Patriots (CBS Radio’s similarly-formatted WBZ-FM “The Sports Hub”) as both improve by one-half share. Having bounced back from May’s -.1 with a June gain of three-tenths, WEEI-FM dropped seven-tenths in July but has its second straight one-half share increase (4.3 – 4.8 – 5.3, 6+) to move from sixth to fourth. Entering the August ratings period, “The Sports Hub” had been down or flat six straight times for a combined loss of -2.5 (5.8 – 5.4 – 4.7 – 4.7 – 4.5 – 3.5 – 3.3, 6+), but is now a collective +1.1 in August and September (3.9 – 4.4, 6+), advancing from tenth to eighth. In addition to the two sports talk rivals, Beasley Media Group rhythmic hot AC WBQT posts a gain of one-half share as well and “Hot 96.9” is a collective +.9 in three successive increases (3.0 – 3.2 – 3.4 – 3.9, #12 to #11, 6+). Flat at #7, co-owned WKLB “Country 102.5” gains one-tenth to 4.6 (6+), ending at three a consecutive string of down and flat trends that accounted for a loss of six-tenths (5.1 – 4.5 – 4.5 – 4.5, 6+). Following four successive increases that netted six-tenths (2.1 – 2.2 – 2.4 – 2.5 – 2.7, 6+), iHeartMedia’s similarly-programmed WBWL “101.7 The Bull – Boston’s New Hit Country,” drops one-tenth to 2.6 (6+), slipping from #14 #15. Owing to an improvement of three-tenths to 5.2 (6+), WBZ-AM applies the brakes to five successive decreases that resulted in an overall loss of nine-tenths (5.8 – 5.7 – 5.6 – 5.1 – 5.0 – 4.9, 6+), but the CBS Radio news-talk hybrid backslides from fifth to sixth. A loss of one-half share by Boston University-owned news/talk WBUR ends three straight sweeps without a decrease and wipes out the +.5 it gained in that timeframe (4.0 – 4.3 – 4.3 – 4.5 – 4.0, seventh to tenth, 6+). While it remains at #18, Northeast Broadcasting Company triple A WXRV “92.5 The River – Boston’s Independent Radio” surrenders two-tenths to 1.7 (6+), thus curtailing five straight sweeps without a decrease that netted one-half share (1.4 – 1.6 – 1.7 – 1.8 – 1.8 – 1.9, 6+).

3) Miami – By chalking up a gain of seven-tenths (4.6 – 5.3, 6+), Spanish Broadcasting System Spanish contemporary WCMQ “Z-92.3” notches its highest 6+-share since November’s 5.5 and inches up from sixth to fifth. Conversely, after posting a 7.0 (6+) or higher in five of six ratings periods between January and June, Univision Radio Spanish contemporary WAMR “Amor 107.5” sputters for the third straight time for a combined -1.4 (7.2 – 6.6 – 6.0 – 5.8, 6+), but continues at #3. Its Spanish news/talk sibling WAQI is without an increase for the sixth straight time (1.8 – 1.7 – 1.6 – 1.6 – 1.3 – 1.3 – 1.2, 6+) and is down 33% since March. As the result of a +.2 to 3.7 (#11 to #10, 6+), CBS Radio rhythmic CHR WPOW “Power 96 – Miami’s Party Station” halts three straight down or flat trends that accounted for a loss of seven-tenths (4.2 – 3.9 – 3.9 – 3.5, 6+). In addition to being #1 for the fifth straight time, Cox Media Group urban AC WHQT “Hot 105” picks up six-tenths to 7.7, its strongest 6+-stat since July 2016’s 8.0. Progressing by one-half share each are urban contemporary sibling WEDR “99 Jamz Miami’s #1 for Hip-Hop and R&B” (4.2 – 4.7, ninth to sixth, 6+) and iHeartMedia Spanish contemporary WZTU Tu 94.9 FM – Donde Viven Tus Hits” (3.5, #15 to #12, 6+). WEDR had been up seven-tenths via three straight gains (4.1 – 4.4 – 4.5 – 4.8, 6+), before dropping six-tenths in August. Meanwhile, the +.5 for WZTU curtails four straight sweeps without an increase for a net loss of nine-tenths (3.9 – 3.6 – 3.6 – 3.5 – 3.0, 6+); August’s 3.0 was its softest 6+-share since last October’s 2.9. Following three consecutive positive trends for an overall +1.3 (3.7 – 4.1 – 4.6 – 5.0, 6+), Entercom classic hits-oldies WMXJ “102.7 The Beach – More Music, More Fun” declines by four-tenths to 4.6 (6+), segueing from fifth to seventh. Steady at #4, adult contemporary cluster-mate WLYF “Lite FM” has been trending 5.6 – 5.9 – 5.7 – 5.6 – 5.2 – 5.8 – 5.6 (6+) since March, while Cox Media Group-owned/similarly-programmed WFEZ “Easy 93” remains in second-place despite a one-half share dip (6.7 – 6.2, 6+); “Easy” was a very consistent 6.6 – 6.8 – 6.5 – 6.7 (6+) between May and August. It is still an extremely tight race between the market’s two CHR competitors, but WFEZ sibling WFLC “Hits 97.3” (4.4 – 4.5, +.1, seventh to eighth, 6+) has a six-tenths advantage over iHeartMedia-owned WHYI “Y-100 Miami’s #1 Hit Music Station” (4.3 – 3.9, -.4, eighth to ninth, 6+). They were tied for eighth-place in July and separated by one-tenth in August, as “Hits 97.3” picked up three-tenths and “Y-100” added two-tenths. Prior to September’s -.4, “Y-100” was a collective +.6 in three consecutive up or flat monthlies (3.7 – 3.7 – 4.1 – 4.3, 6+).

4) Detroit – After registering three straight decreases for a collective -1.4 (4.8 – 4.4 – 4.1 – 3.4, 6+), Cumulus Media news/talk WJR regains half that loss with a +.7 to 4.1 and carries on at #12 (6+). In August, WJR fell below a four-share (6+) for the first time in more than two years (3.7, July 2015, 6+). Not only does hot AC cluster-mate WDVD progress from ninth to seventh, “96.3 – Today’s Best Music and More” reaches the five-share level (6+) and notches its fourth straight up or flat trend for a cumulative +1.4 (3.6 – 3.6 – 4.6 – 4.7 – 5.0, 6+). Off a combined one-half share in July and August (3.8 – 3.7 – 3.3, 6+), Beasley Media Group urban-rhythmic oldies WMGC answers with a +.6 to 3.9, its best 6+-showing since April’s 4.3, but “105.1 The Bounce” remains at #13 (6+). The three stations locked at #2 in August were just one-tenth away from the top spot. Included in that scrum at #2 is iHeartMedia adult contemporary WNIC “100.3 The ‘80s ‘til Now,” which gains four-tenths (6.0 – 6.4, 6+) to advance to the penthouse for the first time since the “Holiday” 2016 report when it logged a 13.7 (6+); this is the highest 6+-share for WNIC since then. One-tenth behind WNIC is CBS Radio sports talk WXYT-FM “97.1 The Ticket” (6.0 – 6.3, +.3, 6+), which was off one full-share via three straight downward moves (6.3 – 6.1 – 5.7 – 5.3, 6+) before gaining seven-tenths in August. After posting three straight gains for a full-share improvement (5.2 – 5.8 – 5.9 – 6.2, 6+), WNIC faltered by two-tenths in August. The station it dislodges from #1 – CBS Radio classic hits-oldies WOMC – drops three-tenths and slips to third (6.1 – 5.8, 6+). As a result of August’s one-tenth loss, WOMC ended three straight gains that generated a collective eight-tenths (5.4 – 5.9 – 6.0 – 6.2, 6+). A combined mammoth +2.4 in May and June, iHeartMedia urban AC WMXD “Mix 92.3 – Detroit’s Throwbacks and R&B” is -2.1 in three subsequent decreases and departs the top ten (6.4 – 5.2 – 5.1 – 4.3, #8 to #11, 6+). A decrease of seven-tenths to 4.6 (seventh to eighth, 6+) erases the +.6 that Beasley Media Group’s WRIF “Everything That Rocks” recorded in three successive up or flat trends (4.7 – 5.0 – 5.0 – 5.3, 6+). In the market’s country tussle, CBS Radio-owned WYCD “99.5 Detroit’s Country” (fifth to sixth) is down for the third time in a row for an overall -1.1 and records its lowest 6+-share since February’s 4.9 (6.2 – 5.5 – 5.4 – 5.1, 6+). At the same time, Cumulus Media’s WDRQ “93.1 Nash FM” (#18 to #17) hasn’t had an increase since May and is -.6 in that stretch (3.0 – 2.5 – 2.5 – 2.4 – 2.4, 6+). Even though iHeartMedia CHR WKQI is without an increase for the fourth straight time for a collective -.7 (5.1 – 4.8 – 4.7 – 4.4 – 4.4, 6+), “Channel 95.5 – Detroit’s #1 Hit Music Station” manages to move from tenth to ninth.

5) Seattle – Up by one-tenth in each of the last three ratings periods (3.5 – 3.6 – 3.7 – 3.8, 6+), Bonneville’s KIRO-FM “97.3 – Seattle’s News, Seattle’s Talk” explodes with a +1.1 to 4.9 – its highest 6+-share since February’s 5.1 – to soar from #11 all the way to #5. One Emerald City country outlet – CBS Radio’s KMPS “Seattle Country Music Radio” – gains one-tenth (4.2 – 4.3, steady at #7, 6+) as another – Entercom-owned KKWF “100.7 Seattle’s Fresh Country The Wolf” – drops one-tenth (3.3 – 3.2, unchanged at #14, 6+). KMPS is rebounding from August’s, while 3.3 was the highest 6+-share for “The Wolf” since last September’s 4.1. There is minimal August 2017 – September 2017 movement as well regarding the two CHRs as Hubbard’s KQMV “MOViN 92.5 – All the Hits” (flat at #3) and iHeartMedia-owned KPWK “Power 93.3 – Seattle’s New #1 For Hit Music” (3.0 – 2.9, #17 to #19) are both down one-tenth. This represents the fourth time in a row that “MOViN” hasn’t had an increase for an overall -2.1 (7.4 – 7.4 – 6.2 – 5.4 – 5.3, 6+). It slipped from first to third in August, following a seven-month run at #1. Owing to a gain of four-tenths to 4.9 (6+), KZOK curtails at five a string of down or flat sweeps that accounted for a loss of eight-tenths (5.3 – 5.3 – 5.3 – 4.9 – 4.7 – 4.5, 6+) and the CBS Radio classic rocker remains in fifth-place. Flat at 6.2 (6+), Northwest Public Radio’s KUOW, which improved by one-half share in August, repeats at #1. Its +.5 this time last month pulled the plug on three straight downward moves that produced an overall decline of six-tenths (6.3 – 6.0 – 5.8 – 5.7, 6+). Locked on 6.1 (6+) in July and August, Hubbard adult contemporary KRWM “Warm 106.9” regresses by six-tenths to 5.5 (6+) but continues in the runner-up slot.  A combined +1.0 in three straight up or flat trends (3.0 – 3.4 – 3.4 – 4.0, 6+), Sinclair Broadcast Group hot AC KPLZ “Star 101.5 Today’s Best Mix” surrenders four-tenths to 3.6 (6+) and exits the top ten (#10 to #13); 4.0 in August was the station’s highest 6+-share since “Holiday” 2016’s 5.5. The remarkably consistent May 2017 – September 2017 6+-profile of iHeartMedia’s similarly-formatted KBKS “106.1 Kiss FM – More Music, More Variety” is 3.3 – 3.2 – 3.3 – 3.3 – 3.1 – 3.3 – 3.2 (steady at #14, 6+). The third station (along with aforementioned KKWF and KBKS) in September’s three-way tie at #14 (up from #18 in August) is Crista Media contemporary Christian KCMS “Spirit 105.3,” which posts its fourth consecutive increase for a collective +.8 (2.4 – 2.6 – 2.7 – 2.9 – 3.2, 6+). A loss of seven-tenths virtually cuts in half the 6+-share of iHeartMedia-owned KFOO “Alt 102.9 – Tacoma’s Rock Alternative” (1.5 – .8, #26, 6+).

6) Phoenix – Massive winning ways continue for Hubbard’s KDKB, which gains an overall three full-shares in ten straight up or flat trends (2.3 – 2.5 – 2.7 – 3.0 – 3.1 – 3.1 – 3.4 – 3.7 – 3.8 – 4.9 – 5.3, 6+). Not only does “Alt 93.3 Arizona’s Alternative” advance from sixth to fourth, it crosses the five-share level (6+) for the first time in its PPMhistory. Moreover, it had never reached a four-share until this time last month. An addition of seven-tenths enables co-owned KUPD “Arizona’s Real Rock” to reach the six-share level and progress from third to second (5.3 – 6.0, 6+). Ahead of it by 1.7 shares (6+) and on top for the fifth straight month is yet another Hubbard property – KSLX “Classic Rock 100.7” (7.9 – 7.7, -.2, 6+) – which was +1.1 (6.8 – 7.9, 6+) in August. “Classic Rock 100.7” was down a combined one-half share in June and July (7.3 – 7.0 – 6.8, 6+). After trending a steady 2.0 – 2.2 – 2.1 – 2.0 (April 2017 – July 2017, 6+), Bonneville sports talk KMVP-FM sputtered by one-half share in August, but “98.7 Arizona Sports” rebounds with a gain nearly twice that margin (1.5 – 2.4, +.9, 6+) and returns to the top twenty (#23 to #17). News/talk cluster-mate KTAR-FM not only registers an increase of four-tenths to 3.9 (6+), thus applying the brakes to six straight decreases for a collective -1.3 (4.8 – 4.6 – 4.5 – 4.2 – 3.9 – 3.6 – 3.5, 6+), it is back in the top ten (#12 to #9).  Four straight downward trends eroded KFYI’s 6+-share by more than 55% (3.0 – 2.3 – 2.1 – 1.9 – 1.3, 6+), however, the iHeartMedia news/talker picks up three-tenths to 1.6 (6+) and climbs from #25 to #23. Jumping by one-half share each are Maricopa County Community College news/talk KJZZ (3.0 – 3.5, #16 to #11, 6+), which was up eight-tenths in August, and Farmworker Educational Radio regional Mexican KNAI (1.9 – 2.4, #19 to #17, 6+). The 6.8 – 6.4 – 6.8 (June – July – August, 6+) sequence by KESZ is stymied by a loss of one full-share to 5.8 (second to third), the lowest 6+-share for the iHeartMedia adult contemporary facility in nearly three years (4.6, 6+, November 2014). A combined +1.7 in June and July (4.7 – 5.3 – 6.4, 6+), CBS Radio classic hits-oldies KOOL is now an overall -1.7 in August and September (6.4 – 5.3 – 4.7, third to sixth, 6+). In July, KOOL crossed the six-share threshold for the first time since May 2016’s 6.0 (6+). After being an overall +1.2 in six straight (modest) increases (2.2 – 2.3 – 2.6 – 2.8 – 3.1 – 3.2 – 3.4, 6+), Maricopa County Community College classical KBAQ forfeits three-tenths to 3.1 (6+) as “K-Bach” drops from #13 to #15. Down seven-tenths in three straight declines (4.2 – 4.1 – 3.7 – 3.5, 6+), CBS Radio’s KMLE “Country @ 107.9” exits the top ten (#10 to #11). Its lead over iHeartMedia’s KNIX is down to one-tenth as “102.5 – Today’s Best Country & All Time Favorites” gains one-tenth (3.3 – 3.4, 6+) to climb from #14 to #13.

7) Minneapolis – Via three consecutive increases (4.6 – 4.9 – 5.0 – 5.6, 6+), iHeartMedia’s KFXN “100.3 Sports Radio K-Fan” is up one full-share and advances from ninth to fifth. A combined -.9 in July and August, KMNB “Buz’n” @ 102.9” regains one-half share (3.9 – 4.4, #12 to #11, 6+). In July, the CBS Radio country-formatted outlet curtailed at three a string of consecutive gains that yielded a +1.1 (3.7 – 4.0 – 4.1 – 4.8, 6+). Format rival – iHeartMedia-owned KEEY “K-102 Minnesota’s Country Station” – erodes by one full-share as the result of its third straight dip (6.3 – 6.2 – 5.5 – 5.3, 6+) and segues from eighth to ninth. Stuck on 4.7 (6+) in July and August after June’s 5.6, American Public Media Group news/talk KNOW improves by one-half share as well to 5.2 (6+) and remains in tenth-place. Swapping places at the top are iHeartMedia classic hits-oldies KQQL “Kool 108 – Minnesota’s Greatest Hits” (second to first) and CHR sibling KDWB “The Twin Cities’ #1 Hit Music Station” (first to second). This represents the seventh successive up or flat trend for “Kool 108” which is +1.8 since February (5.4 – 5.8 – 5.8 – 6.4 – 6.6 –  6.8 – 6.8 – 7.2, 6+). Frozen on 6.8 (6+) in April and May, KDWB notched back-to-back increases in June and July totaling seven-tenths (6.8 – 7.4 – 7.5, 6+), but is 7.5 – 7.2 – 7.0 (-.5, 6+) in August and September. After finishing first in April, May, and June, “The Twin Cities’ #1 Hit Music Station” segued to #2 in July. Rallying from July’s half-share loss, hot AC sibling KTCZ responded with a +.4 in August, but “Cities 97” falters by eight-tenths in September (4.2 – 3.4, 6+), slipping from #11 to #13. A cumulative -1.2 in December and “Holiday” 2016 (5.2 – 4.6 – 4.0, 6+), “Cities 97” was +1.3 in January, only to follow it with four consecutive negative trends that produced a -1.4 (5.3 – 4.8 – 4.3 – 4.2 – 3.9, 6+); it added four-tenths in June. Flat at #3, Hubbard-owned/similarly formatted KSTP-FM “KS-95 Today’s Variety” posts a 6.6 for the fourth time in the last five sweeps (6.6 – 6.6 – 7.6 – 6.6 – 6.6, 6+). Prior to July’s +1.0, KSTP-FM was without an increase the previous five sweeps for a -1.1 (7.7 – 7.6 – 7.3 – 6.7 – 6.6 – 6.6, 6+). Back-to-back increases by KXXR in July and August produced a +.4 (5.6 – 5.7 – 6.0, 6+), but the Cumulus Media rocker surrenders six-tenths in September to 5.4 and “93-X” drops from fifth to seventh. Following five (modestly) up or flat moves in a row netting three-tenths (2.5 – 2.6 – 2.6 – 2.7 – 2.8, 6+), Hubbard-owned KTMY “My Talk 107.1” regresses by one-half share to 2.3 (#15 to #17, 6+).

8) San Diego – By picking up six-tenths to 4.4 (6+), iHeartMedia-owned KGB: cracks the top ten (#11 to #8); ends three straight sweeps without an increase (4.0 – 3.8 – 3.8 –   3.8, 6+); and gives “101 San Diego’s Classic Rock” its best 6+ performance since February 2015’s 4.6. Flat at 6.2 (6+), after August’s eight-tenths’ improvement, KPBS repeats at #1. Between January and July, the San Diego State University news/talk facility was in 5.0 – 5.5 range (5.2 – 5.4 – 5.2 – 5.0 – 5.3 – 5.5 – 5.4, 6+) and hadn’t been at #1 since this past February. Three-tenths behind it and continuing at #2 is iHeartMedia’s similarly-formatted KOGO, which is a collective +.6 in three straight up or flat monthlies (5.3 – 5.5 – 5.9 – 5.9, 6+). Up four-tenths in four consecutive sweeps without a loss (1.6 – 1.8 – 1.8 – 2.0 – 2.0, 6+), Midwest Television news/talk KFMB-AM climbs from #20 to #19. Within 3.1 – 3.3 (6+) range in each of the last seven ratings periods (3.2 – 3.3 – 3.1 – 3.3 – 3.1 – 3.1 – 3.2, 6+), rock cluster-mate KFMB-FM improves by one-half share to 3.7, its highest 6+-share since April 2016’s 3.7; “100.7 KFM – BFM” continues at #12 (6+). Format rival – iHeartMedia’s KIOZ “Rock 105.3” – is steady at 2.5 (#17, to #16, 6+). In a spirited three-way CHR battle, XHTZ “Z-90.3 Today’s Hit Music” (4.1 – 4.2, +.1, tenth to ninth, 6+) overtakes iHeartMedia’s KHTS “Channel 93.3 – San Diego’s #1 Hit Music Station” (4.4 – 4.0, -.4, seventh to tenth, 6+), while CBS Radio-owned KEGY “Energy 103.7,” whose last six trends are 2.5 – 2.4 – 2.5 – 2.5 – 2.4 –  2.4 (6+), is flat at #18. Dropping from fourth to fifth, Entercom’s KSON-FM is an overall -1.1 as the result of three consecutive sweeps without an increase (5.7 – 5.4 – 5.2 – 4.6, 6+). This is the lowest 6+-share for “New Country” since “Holiday” 2016’s 4.0. Co-owned adult contemporary KXSN is off for the third straight time as well (6.2 – 5.8 – 5.7 – 5.2, 6+) for an overall loss of one full-share but “Sunny 98.1 – San Diego’s Greatest Hits” stays in third-place. Following three successive months of downward moves for a collective -1.4 (4.8 – 4.2 – 3.8 – 3.4, 6+), KYXY responded with a +.9 in August. The CBS Radio adult contemporary-turned-hot AC returns one-half share in September (4.3 – 3.8, 6+) though and again departs the top ten (#9 to #11).

9) Denver – It continues to be a wild ride for Bonneville’s KKFN “Sports Radio 104.3 The Fan,” which enters the top ten (#14 to #9). Its ten most recent shifts are -.5 (“Holiday” 2016); +1.1 (January 2017); -.7 (February); +.6 (March); -.5 (April); +.5 (May); -.7 (June); -.9 (July); +1.1 (August); and now +.9 in September (3.4 – 4.3, 6+). A loss of six-tenths in November halted four successive up or flat trends which netted two full-shares (2.9 – 2.9 – 3.5 – 3.6 – 4.9, 6+). Last October’s 4.9 represents the most potent 6+ showing for KKFN under PPM methodology. Down a collective eight-tenths in July and August (4.3 – 3.9 – 3.5, 6+), KSE Radio Ventures hot AC KIMN “Mix 100 – Today’s Best Mix” recoups 75% of that decrease with a +.6 to 4.1 (#12 to #11, 6+). The combined one-half share that Entercom’s similarly-programmed KALC picked up in June and July (3.4 – 3.8 – 3.9, 6+) was erased in August (3.4, 6+) and “Alice 105.9” adds another four-tenths to 3.8 to remain at #14. Locked on 4.6 (6+) in July and August, iHeartMedia news/talk KOA posts a one-half share increase to 5.1, progressing from sixth to fourth. September 2017’s two top finishers are KOA’s triple A sibling KBCO “World Class Rock” and Bonneville country outlet KYGO. No longer though are they tied for the lead, as KBCO is up two-tenths, while KYGO (which had sole possession of first-place in June and July) forfeits three-tenths (6.4 – 6.1, 6+), segueing from a first-place tie with “World Class Rock” to #2. Not to be lost in the shuffle is the fact that KBCO has its tenth successive increase nearly doubling its 6+-share (3.4 – 3.6 – 4.1 – 4.2 – 4.7 – 5.2 – 5.5 – 5.7 – 6.0 – 6.4 – 6.6, 6+). After three straight months at #1, KYGO slipped to #2 in May. Within one-tenth of KYGO in July, Entercom classic rock KQMT “99.5 The Mountain” is a whopping -1.9 in August and September (6.4 – 5.7 – 4.5, 6+), drifting from fourth to seventh. By recapturing the seven-tenths it lost in back-to-back declines since February (6.2 – 5.9 – 5.5, 6+), “The Mountain” progressed from third to first in May; KQMT improved by one-half share in July. After being down or flat in each of the last seven survey periods for a collective loss of -2.8 (7.1 – 6.1 – 5.5 – 5.5 – 5.2 – 4.7 – 4.7 – 4.3, 6+), iHeartMedia’s KTCL “Modern Rock – Channel 93-3” adds three-tenths to 4.6 (6+), progressing from tenth to sixth. Off one-half share in June, Colorado Public Radio’s KCFR responds with a collective +1.9 in the subsequent three sweeps (4.0 – 4.9 – 5.9 – 5.9, 6+), repeating at #3 and reaching the five-share level (6+) for the first time since March 2016’s 5.7. Both iHeartMedia classic rock KRFX “103.5 The Fox” (4.6 – 4.1, #6 to #11, 6+) and Entravision regional Mexican KXPK “La Tricolor 96.5” erode by one-half share (3.3 – 2.8, flat at #16, 6+). This is the lowest 6+-share for “The Fox” since 4.1 in “Holiday” 2016. As it entered the July sweep, “The Fox” was within 4.1 – 4.7 range (6+) in each of the previous eight survey periods. It gained seven-tenths in July only to relinquish six-tenths in August.      

10) Tampa – Dusting itself off after an August -1.2 (10.5 – 9.3, 6+), Cox Media Group adult contemporary WDUV is up tenth to 9.4 (6+) as “Lite Favorites” finishes on top for a staggering 60th successive ratings period. In advance of the August decline, WDUV had been a collective +1.8 as the result of four successive uptrends (8.7 – 8.9 – 9.5 – 10.1 – 10.5, 6+). In July, “Lite Favorites” registered its most potent 6+-stat (10.5) since “Holiday” 2016’s 12.7. While co-owned classic hits-oldies WXGL is in the runner-up slot for the eleventh straight time, “The Eagle” erodes by an overall -2.2 via four straight down or flat trends (8.1 – 7.1 – 7.1 – 6.3 – 5.9, 6+). Having posted five consecutive positive sweeps for a cumulative full-share increase (5.5 – 5.6 – 6.0 – 6.1 – 6.2 – 6.5, 6+), “The Eagle” was down by one-tenth in “Holiday” 2016. It is seven-tenths ahead of Beasley Media Group’s similarly-programmed WRBQ “Q-105,” which is flat from August in both 6+-AQH share (5.2) and market rank (#4). Following four consecutive negative trends that produced a collective -1.5 (5.6 – 5.4 – 4.9 – 4.4 – 4.1, 6+), “Q-105” answered with a +1.1 in August. Slow and steady guides Cox Media Group news/talk WHPT “102.5 The Bone – Real, Raw, Radio” to its third straight gain of one-tenth (3.1 – 3.2 – 3.3 – 3.4, #13 to #12, 6+). Not only does iHeartMedia’s WUSF sputter by seven-tenths to drop out of the top ten (4.5 – 3.8, #9 to #11, 6+), “US-103.5 Tampa Bay’s #1 For New Country” has its softest 6+-showing in almost seven years (3.3, Holiday” 2010, 6+). Conversely, its direct competitor – Beasley Media Group-owned WQYK “Tampa Bay’s New Country Hits” – notches its third progressive monthly in a row for an overall +.5 and moves from seventh to sixth (4.6 – 4.7 – 4.9 – 5.1, 6+). Without a decrease the past four ratings periods for an overall gain of eight-tenths (4.9 – 5.0 – 5.0 – 5.3 – 5.7, 6+), iHeartMedia urban contemporary WBTP dips by four-tenths to 5.3 (6+), but “95.7 The Beat – Tampa Bay’s Hip-Hop and R&B” continues in third-place. Hot AC cluster-mate WMTX “Mix 100.7” is without an increase for the sixth month in succession (4.0 – 3.8 – 3.3 – 3.3 – 3.3 – 3.2 – 3.0, #14 to #15, 6+) and has lost one full-share in that timeframe. Its urban-rhythmic oldies HD2 channel though picks up one-tenth to .8 (6+), thus snapping at five a consecutive skein of down or flat trends for a collective -1.2 (1.9 – 1.0 – 1.0 – 1.0 – .9 – .7, 6+). By dropping two-tenths to 4.9 (6+), Radio Training Network contemporary Christian WCIE “The Joy FM” concludes four straight sweeps without a loss that yielded a +1.3 (3.8 – 3.8 – 3.8 – 4.8 – 5.1, fifth to seventh, 6+); July’s 5.1 was the highest 6+-share for “Joy FM” since the “Holiday” 2016 report (5.1, as well).

11) Baltimore – Boasting the largest 6+ August 2017 – September 2017 increase by any station in the 12 PPM-markets analyzed here, CBS Radio’s WJZ-FM “Sports Radio 105.7 The Fan” trots out a +1.3 (4.3 – 5.6, 6+) for its strongest 6+-stat since last October’s 6.5 and jumps from seventh to fifth. With a +.9 to 4.7 (ninth to sixth, 6+), hot AC-turned-CHR sibling WWMX “106.5 Baltimore’s Best Mix” pulls the plug on three straight declines that accounted for a collective -1.2 (5.0 – 4.8 – 4.5 – 3.8, 6+). A similar streak is broken in the format, given that iHeartMedia’s WZFT “Z-104.3 Baltimore’s #1 Hit Music Station” adds one-half share to 3.7 (#13 to #10, 6+), thus ending four successive sweeps without an increase for an overall loss of nine-tenths (4.1 – 3.9 – 3.7 – 3.7 – 3.2, 6+). It is a #1/#2 finish for Radio One properties as urban contemporary WERQ “Q-92 Jams,” which was a collective -1.5 in July and August (8.7 – 8.0 – 7.2, 6+) slipping to third-place, registers a gain of six-tenths to 7.8 (6+) and catches urban AC sibling WWIN “Magic 95.9” at #1. Off six-tenths in July, “Magic” records a 7.8 (6+) for the third straight month. Its gain of four-tenths in June curtailed at four its consecutive string of downward trends that accounted for a loss of nine-tenths (8.9 – 8.8 – 8.6 – 8.3 – 8.0, 6+). Prior to June, “Magic” had been on top the previous five straight monthlies. With a gain of one-half share in May (7.5 – 8.0, 6+), “Q-92” tied “Magic” at #1, but the tie was broken in June when “Q-92” gained seven-tenths to 8.7 (6+). Showing a net loss of eight-tenths as a result of being down or flat for the fifth month in a row (8.0 – 7.7 – 7.7 – 7.4 – 7.4 – 7.2, 6+), iHeartMedia-owned WPOC “93.1 Baltimore’s #1 for New Country” shifts from second to third. The May – June – July – August up/down sequence by CBS Radio-owned adult hits WQSR of +1.2 in May; -.5 in June; +.9 in July; and -.3 in August (4.4 – 5.6 – 5.1 – 6.0 – 5.7, 6+) concludes as “102.7 Jack FM Playing What We Want for Baltimore” surrenders one full-share to 4.7 (6+) and slips from fifth to sixth; July’s 6.0 was the best 6+-performance for “Jack” since 6.1 in March 2015. On the heels of its August +.6, independent news/talk WCBM relinquishes nine-tenths (3.4 – 2.5, #11 to #14, 6+); 3.4 was its highest 6+-share since 3.5 in March. The six most recent trends for Hearst news/talk WBAL are 3.2 – 3.2 – 3.2 – 3.1 – 3.4 – 3.4 (steady at #11, 6+). Co-owned WIYY, however, regresses by eight-tenths (5.5 – 4.7, 6+) and has its weakest 6+-stat since August 2016’s 4.4; even so, “98 Rock” stays at #6. After dialing up a one-half share increase in August to 6.9, its strongest 6+-showing since January’s 7.1, CBS Radio adult contemporary WLIF “Today’s 101.9” returns it in its entirety (6.4, 6+) and is unchanged at #4. More than doubling its 6+-share in four straight improvements between April and August (.6 – .8 – 1.0 – 1.1 – 1.3, 6+), CBS Radio-owned/Bloomberg-operated business news WDCH is off one-tenth to 1.2 but remains at #15 (6+).

12) St. Louis – The third consecutive gain by CBS Radio KMOX “The Voice of St. Louis” propels the heritage news/talk outlet, which is a collective +1.1 since June (7.3 – 7.5 – 7.7 – 8.4, 6+), from second to first. Displaced from the lead position after a three-month stay there and relocating to the runner-up slot is iHeartMedia classic hits-oldies KLOU (8.5 – 7.7, -.8, 6+). Following three consecutive sweeps on top, KLOU assumed the runner-up slot in April. Not only does Radio One urban contemporary WHHL return to the top ten (#14 to #10), “Hot 104.1” is up one-tenth to 3.7 (6+), thus applying the brakes to three straight down or flat sweeps that generated a collective -1.4 (5.0 – 4.1 – 4.1 – 3.6, 6+). Ups/downs continue for Hubbard adult hits WARH “106.5 The Arch,” which was -.6 in a June – July mini-slide (6.4 – 6.1 – 5.8, 6+); gained twice that loss margin with a +1.2 in August; but is -.7 in September (7.0 – 6.3, fourth to fifth, 6+). With a 7.0 in August, “The Arch” crossed the seven-share threshold (6+) for the first time since last December’s 7.6. In four consecutive improvements, iHeartMedia urban-rhythmic oldies KMJM “100.3 The Beat” has gained eight-tenths (2.0 – 2.1 – 2.5 – 2.6 – 2.8, flat at #17, 6+). Unchanged at #7, CBS Radio adult contemporary KEZK is up or flat for the fourth sweep in succession and is a collective +.6 since May (4.0 – 4.1 – 4.4 – 4.6 – 4.6, 6+). Conversely, hot AC cluster-mate KYKY “Y-98” is without an increase for the eighth month in a row for a net loss of -2.5 (6.2 – 5.9 – 5.7 – 5.4 – 5.1 – 5.0 – 4.8 – 4.3 – 3.7, 6+), falling from eighth to tenth. Part of a four-way tie at #12 are iHeartMedia CHR KSLZ “Z-107.7 – St. Louis’ #1 Hit Music Station” (3.8 – 3.5, -.3, flat at #12, 6+) and Emmis’ similarly-formatted KNOU “Now 96.3” (3.5, -.2, up from #13 in August, 6+). “Now” had been up in each of the past three sweeps for an overall +.6 (3.1 – 3.5 – 3.6 – 3.7, 6+). Modestly down or flat in each of the last six ratings periods for a collective loss of seven-tenths (4.0 – 3.9 – 3.6 – 3.5 – 3.4 – 3.4 – 3.3, 6+), news/talk sibling KFTK slips from #15 to #16. Although remaining in third-place, co-owned rocker KSHE is off by one full-share via three straight downward moves (7.9 – 7.4 – 7.2 – 6.9, 6+). Unlisted for the ninth consecutive month are Gateway Creative Broadcasting-owned contemporary Christian KLJY “99.1 Joy! FM” (4.5, #9, “Holiday” 2016, 6+) and co-owned, similarly-formatted KLJY-HD2 (.2, #20, “Holiday” 2016, 6+).

Heidi Harris Exits KXNT, Las Vegas After Post Critical of Gay Adoption. The report from KVVU-TV, Las Vegas “FOX 5” notes that talk show host Heidi Harris’ exit from CBS RADIO news/talker KXNT came just days after she posted to Facebook a critique of a local ad promoting adoption that featured a gay couple.  Harris told KVVU-TV that the company is not renewing her contract but “couldn’t say whether it was because of her Facebook post.”  Harris’ Facebook post took aim at an ad for the Clark County Department of Family Services promoting adoption that showed two gay men holding a child.  She wrote, in part, “Another not-so-subtle attempt to normalize something that is NOT normal.  Even if it is normal for YOU it is not the best thing for the baby…Babies who are eligible for adoption should go to MARRIED people of the opposite sex.  That is the IDEAL situation for a baby, and political correctness, changing laws or attitudes cannot alter that REALITY.”  Neither CBS RADIO nor Harris would comment about whether the post had anything to do with the station’s decision to not renew her contract.  But Harris posted a Bible verse clearly aimed at addressing the matter.  Her post: “Though they intended evil against you and devised a plot, they will not succeed. (Even though they think they have) Psalm 21:12.”  Since Harris’ departure, afternoon personality Alan Stock is hosting the morning show.  TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison issued the following comment in response to Harris’ exit from the station, “Certainly CBS has the right to employ or terminate talent based on whatever political or positioning sensibilities are in vogue at the moment.  However, it continues to be an unfortunately perilous situation for talk talent to be hired and encouraged on one hand to take controversial positions that fit either the left or right paradigm that constitutes radio ‘stationality’ and then cut loose for doing that exact thing if they just happen to step over the constantly moving and ever-subjective line of political correctness.  Heidi Harris is a longtime, major and important player in this business and the issue of gay adoption is one that has been openly and legitimately discussed in this medium for years.  Considering the fact that her contract was coming up for renewal, perhaps there is a financial component to this story.  There is also the possibility that they buckled in the tyrannical face of advertiser pressure. Regardless, I strongly advise those corporations that are serious about playing in the talk radio arena to be prepared in advance to take the heat of controversy that is a normal part of doing business and stand behind their talent in these instances.”

Guy Phillips to Exit KYKY, St. Louis AM Show to Host Afternoons on Crosstown KTRS.  According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, morning personality Guy Phillips is leaving CBS RADIO’s hot AC KYKY, St. Louis and will take over the afternoon show at CH Holdings’ crosstown news/talk KTRS.  The paper reports that Phillips will leave KYKY in November and will likely start at KTRS in January.  KTRS afternoon personality Frank O. Pinion recently exited KTRS and will join crosstown sports talk KFNS on October 2 (though O. Pinion will host a general issues program).  Currently hosting the afternoon show at KTRS are KMOV-TV meteorologist Kent Ehrhardt and local radio pro Paul Harris.  The Post-Dispatch says that the rest of the current KYKY morning show – Courtney Landrum, Jen Myers, Kevin Berghoff and Lance Hildebrand – will remain on as hosts of the wake-up program.

Francesa to Leave WFAN in December as Scheduled.  New York sports talk icon Mike Francesa will do his last show for CBS RADIO’s WFAN on December 15 as scheduled, according to the New York Daily News.  Francesa had said, in the immediate wake of the Craig Carton matter, that if the station needed him to stay on for a period to avoid revenue losses in both drive time dayparts, that he would consider it.  But that’s apparently not necessary as Francesa told his listeners he’ll leave in December and that “the station is comfortable with that (decision) and I am, too.”  Read the Daily News piece here.

Tedd Webb to Retire from WFLA, Tampa.  The Tampa Bay Times reports that market radio pro Tedd Webb will retire from radio and his current gig as co-host of the morning show on iHeartMedia’s news/talk WFLA-AM, Tampa at the end of January.  The 68-year-old Webb has been plagued by health issues – congestive heart failure and diabetes – and those issues have intensified recently.  Webb tells the paper, “I had a heart attack.  I’m on dialysis three times a week.  I’m drained.  My heart wants to go on, but my body won’t let it.”  Webb works with radio partner Jack Harris and personality Aaron Jacobson.  Harris says, “It’s going to be tough without Teddy.  It’s like Sonny without Cher, Cheech without Chong.”  Read the Times piece here.

Buchanan Exits Connecticut Talker. Afternoon drive talk show host Jim Buchanan announces via Facebook that he’s exited Cumulus Media’s Bridgeport, Connecticut news/talk station WICC, where he anchored the “Talk of the Town” program.    Buchanan had hosted the afternoon drive daypart at WICC since 1982.  The nationally syndicated Dave Ramsey show is now airing in the 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm slot.

TALKERS News Notes. A new, improved version of CBS RADIO’s Radio.com mobile app has been made available to consumers.  CBS says it has “a fresh new look and logo to complement an easy-to-navigate experience now with higher streaming quality.”  CBS EVP of digital J.D. Crowley states, “Audiences want choice and that’s exactly what we’ve given them with this relaunch of the Radio.com app.  By combining their favorite local radio stations and on-demand content, we are catering to the distinctive tastes of mobile-first audiences, giving them control over when and where they engage with our content through a free, best-in-class experience.”…..The nationally syndicated “America Outdoors Radio” program announces that it has surpassed the 50-affiliate mark after just 15 months on the air.  The John Kruse-hosted show is a weekly, one-hour look at fishing, hunting and the shooting sports…..As reported in SportsBusinessDaily, college sports marketing and media rights firms Learfield and IMG College are agreeing to a merger.  Learfield president and CEO Greg Brown will lead the combined companies, estimated by some to be worth $2 billion.  After completion, the new company will control the media rights to some 200 schools.

Cleveland Radio Personality John Webster Dead at 74.  Legendary Cleveland radio personality John Webster passed away recently at the age of 74.  Webster was one half of the morning show duo “Lanigan and Webster” with John Lanigan on WMJI from 1984 to 1997.  He was also a talk radio pioneer who served on morning shows on WERE and WHK.  Cleveland programming icon (and oWOW Internet radio chief) John Gorman commented on Facebook: “When I arrived in Cleveland I was blown away by John Webster’s creation: The ‘People Power’ tabloid-style news/talk format on WERE with Gary Dee (and Webster) in mornings and other characters including George Forbes – when he was the controversial Cleveland City Council president.  At the height of the ‘people power’ format, Webster pulled the plug.  He later told me that he felt he went as far as he could go with the format…”  Cleveland.com reports that Webster’s stepson Jason Fox said “Webster died during the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in Florida.  He said Webster was recovering from hip surgery when the hurricane hit, knocking out power to his home for over a week.  ‘I think that was the final straw for John.’”

In Chicago, classic hits WLS-FM morning show producer Daniel Wolfe is promoted by Cumulus Media to assistant program director.  He’ll continue to serve as producer for “The WLS Wake Up Call.” WLS PD and Cumulus VP/classic hits programming Brian Thomas says, “This puts Dan one step closer to his goals of becoming a PD at Cumulus after doing a great job as morning show producer.  I am looking forward to working with Dan in this new role.”…..At Cumulus Media’s West Michigan CHR WHTS, Coopersville (Grand Rapids market), air personality Ken Evans is partnered with current morning host Rachael Gray on the “105.3 Hot FM Morning Show.”  Evans previously hosted mornings in the market at iHeartMedia’s crosstown CHR WSNX.   Cumulus Grand Rapids market manager Jeff Cartwright comments, “We are excited at the direction ‘105-3 Hot FM’ will take with Ken now in our Cumulus Grand Rapids family.”…..Las Vegas radio pro Connie Breeze joins the MannGroup-syndicated weekend hip hop program “The Mack Attack” (with host Greg Mack) as chief entertainment correspondent.  Breeze also serves with Beasley Media Group at rhythmic oldies KOAS “Old School 105.7” as APD, music director, and afternoon personality.

Mark Fuhrman Named Area President for iHM Pittsburgh/West Virginia.  Joining iHeartMedia West Virginia as area president for the Pittsburgh/West Virginia region is Mark Fuhrman.  He was most recently with IMG College.  iHeartMedia West Virginia includes 22 radio stations.  The company says Fuhrman will work with the programming, business and sales teams for radio station brands in Huntington, Parkersburg and Wheeling to oversee on-air and digital programming as well as create new business and revenue opportunities.  He will report to Tim McAleer, president of iHeartMedia’s Pittsburgh region.

ESPN Announces Launch of ‘30 for 30 Podcast’ Series.  Based on the storytelling formula of ESPN’s popular “30 for 30” film documentaries, ESPN Films and ESPN Audio are collaborating to debut a podcast series – “30 for 30 Podcasts” – this June.  ESPN says the series will tell original, high-quality sports stories in the likeness of the acclaimed “30 for 30” documentaries, but made exclusively for audio.  Two of the topics that will be featured in the first season of “30 for 30 Podcasts” will be: “Dan and Dave Revisited,” the true story of the massive 1990s marketing campaign around the world’s two best decathletes, and “On the Ice,” the story of how a group of amateur Brits became the first all-women’s team to make it to the North Pole.  ESPN Films and Original Content vice president and executive producer Libby Geist comments, “ESPN Films is continuing to push boundaries in the storytelling space and we’re excited to further evolve the 30 for 30 brand.  These audio documentaries will break new ground for ESPN while also bringing our signature long-form archival-based approach to the podcasting arena.”

Radio Talent Institute Scheduled for University of Tennessee May 15-24.  This next Radio Talent Institute is being presented by the Tennessee Association of Broadcasters, University of Tennessee Knoxville, and the National Radio Talent System at the University of Tennessee.  The Institute is a 10-day immersion in radio and it involves discovering, coaching and preparing talented broadcasting students with more than 30 broadcast professionals leading all the sessions in their area of expertise in on-air music radio, news and sports, as well as digital/social media, production, promotion, sales, engineering, programming, management and all things radio.  Students from all over the state and region apply to be accepted and will become certified Radio Marketing Professionals by the Radio Advertising Bureau.  National Radio Talent System founder and president Dan Vallie states, “We are very excited to be partnering with the University of Tennessee and working with Sam Swan and the College of Communication and Information, and with Benny Smith, at their award winning college radio station, WUTK.”  The TAB Radio Talent Institute is accepting applications from students now.  They should apply at http://tab.nationalradiotalentsystem.com/. The deadline to apply is March 31.

CBS News Radio’s Peter King Honored with Legacy Award.  Radio news pro Peter King is being honored by the Florida Associated Press with the Florida Associated Press Broadcasters’ LEGACY AWARD.  The organization cites King’s distinguished career and his service as a role model and his involvement with the AP Broadcasters’ college workshop and more for this award.  He will be honored at the awards ceremony in Orlando in April.

KCMO-AM Talk Host Tom Becka Does TEDx Talk on Fake News.  Longtime talk radio personality Tom Becka (left) recently did a TEDx Talk on “Real News vs Fake News” that you can see here.  Becka hosts the 9:00 am to 11:00 am show on Cumulus Media’s KCMO-AM, Kansas City and does a regular commentary on KPTM-TV, Omaha’s 9:00 pm newscast.

CBS RADIO and Canon Present Small Business Grants.  Pictured above are (from l-r) 1010WINS, New York news director Ben Mevorach; Bittylab LLC founder and CEO Priska Diaz; and “The Bottom Line for Small Business” anchor Rob Walsh.  Mevorach and Walsh presented Diaz with a grant for $10,000 from CBS RADIO and Canon MAXIFY Printers for presenting the most creative plan to expand their business while also doing good in their community.  The companies also awarded San Francisco-based Prison Bars founder and CEO Seth Sundberg a grant in the same amount.

KXNT, Las Vegas Host Alan Stock Leads Listener Trip to Israel. Las Vegas talk show host Alan Stock (pictured at center) recently led a group of listeners on a trip to Israel.  Stock tells TALKERS, “It was a mix of seeing Jewish and Christian holy sites, as well as exploring the geo-political nature of the country.  The trip lasted eight days and everyone loved it – in fact, I’m already getting requests for a second go-around.”

On translator K279BO, Portland, iHeartMedia launches classic country outlet “103.7 The Legend.”  The company says the station’s core artists will include: Garth Brooks, George Strait, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson and others…..iHeartMedia Philadelphia debuts the new station “Pride Radio Philly” – a station targeted to the local LGBTQ listeners and allies.  It’s available on WIOQ’s HD-2 channel at 102.1.  In addition to the personalities also heard on iHeartRadio’s Pride Radio channel, local hosts include Loraine Ballard Morrill, director of news and community affairs; WIOQ’s Casey, and WUSL’s Mutha Knows.  iHeartMedia SVP of programming Brian Check comments, “Philadelphia has an exciting, passionate and growing LGBTQ community and we hope to amplify their voice on Pride Radio Philly.”

ramseySpokane16Ramsey Smart Money Tour Hits Spokane.  Nationally syndicated talk radio superstar – and New York Times best-selling author – Dave Ramsey (right) brought his Smart Money live event to Spokane yesterday (3/1) before a packed house at the INB Performing Arts Center.  Ramsey Solutions personality (and Ramsey’s daughter) Rachel Cruze (left) joined him on stage.  Ramsey combined forces with Morgan Murphy Media’s news/talk KXLY, Spokane “News Radio 920” to promote the appearance.  Station PD Bud Nameck (center) says, “This is the second time that Dave and Rachel have come to Spokane for an event since we partnered with the show.  It’s enlightening for me to see and hear the impact Dave’s message has on our listeners.  The Smart Money event sold out, and when we gave away a few tickets the phones went crazy!  Our clients love the interaction with Dave and Rachel.”  Ramsey also hosted his EntreLeadership 1 Day Event in Spokane on Monday, February 29.

felixluisLuis Felix Exits WVNJ, New York.  Programmer Luis Felix announces his departure from Universal Broadcasting’s WVNJ, Oakland, New Jersey.  Felix says that after seven months with the station and the addition of such programs as Premiere’s Glenn Beck, GCN’s Dr. Joy Browne and the Alex Jones show, things at the station are going in the right direction.  He and ownership were unable to come to terms on a new compensation package.  He says he’s focusing on his consultancy efforts that will aid in brand exposure for radio, retail and municipal clients.

podcastone bPodcastOne-Barstool Sports Partnership to Launch Two New Shows.  The relationship between PodcastOne and Barstool Sports deepens with the launch of two new podcast programs.  Barstool Sports president David Portnoy will host his eponymous show and Barstool Sports editor Dan Katz will host “Pardon My Take.”   PodcastOne and Barstool have been in business together since 2014 when three podcasts – “KFC Radio,” “Daily Mail” and “#Mailtime” – premiered on PodcastOne’s platform.  Portnoy’s show is a look inside Barstool Sports including its “controversies, decisions and stories from the past that have molded” Barstool into what it is today.  Katz’s program “features the most ‘correct sports takes’ in history and includes special guests to help break down the biggest sports stories of the week.”  PodcastOne chairman and CEO Norm Pattiz comments, “Barstool Sports has consistently ranked among our network’s most-listened-to podcasts.  Going from three podcasts a week to five is great for both of us, but more importantly, it’s great for our audience and the advertisers who want to access them.”

nielsen logoRound One of December PPM Data Released.  The first of four rounds of December 2015 PPM data from Nielsen Audio has been released for 12 markets including: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Nassau-Suffolk (Long Island), Riverside, San Jose, and Middlesex-Somerset-Union (New Jersey).  The survey period was November 5 – December 2.  TALKERS magazine’s sister publication RadioInfo has all of the 6+ numbers from subscribing stations here.  In addition, managing editor Mike Kinosian presents his “Twelve Takeaways” from this batch of ratings on the main page at RadioInfo.com here.

kdizSalem’s Twin Cities Business Talker Changes Frequencies.  The recent purchase of the Radio Disney signal KDIZ, Minneapolis by Salem Media Group gives the latter another AM signal in the market and Salem is using the station to improve the coverage of the market by its business talker.  The company is moving the format from KYCR at 1570 to KDIZ at 1440 and is re-branding the station “Business 1440.”  KYCR’s daytime power is 3,800 Watts and KDIZ’ is 5,000 Watts.  (We’re assuming Salem will also ditch the KDIZ calls soon.)  Salem Twin Cities general manager Nic Anderson states, “By moving to AM 1440, we’ll service a larger portion of the Twin Cities with our exclusive business news and financial format.  This allows us to reach more listeners with our on-air partners including Dave Ramsey, Bloomberg, Lou Dobbs, and ‘Bring Me The News Business Updates.’”   As for KYCR, Salem is teasing a new format.  “Salem Media Group Twin Cities has more exciting and groundbreaking news to come in early 2016 for its now-open AM 1570 frequency.  Salem Media Group Twin Cities will launch the first-of-its-kind format in January of 2016.  More details will be made available in the coming days and weeks.”
