WTOP-FM, Washington Enters Partnership with WJLA-TV for Weather

A deal between Hubbard Broadcasting’s all-news WTOP-FM, Washington and Sinclair Broadcast Group’s WJLA-TV, Washington will see WJLA’s team of experienced meteorologists providing round-the-clock weather reports every 10 minutes on WTOP News. WTOP director of news Julia Ziegler says, “WTOP listeners rely on our traffic and weather reports on the 8s. We are excited to begin this partnership with our colleagues at WJLA and bring unprecedented live weather coverage to the DC region, especially on those days when it matters most.” The collaboration with WJLA restarts a longtime partnership between the two news stations. WJLA previously provided weather coverage on WTOP for more than 10 years.

CBS News Radio’s Peter King Honored with Press Award

Mr. King has been a voice of the American space program for more than 25 years covering the space shuttle program from 1995 to its conclusion in 2011, multiple robotic in science, missions, the beginning of commercial space flight, and the return of America’s human spaceflight program.” King is the fourth CBS journalist to receive the award, following Edward R Murrow, Walter Cronkite, and Bill Harwood. King is also posing with the prestigious Robert H Goddard Memorial trophy, which was awarded to NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope and the Northrop Grumman industry team.

BFoA to Honor Dan Mason with Lowry Mays Award

The Broadcasters Foundation of America announces that Dan Mason, former CEO of CBS Radio and previous chairman of the Broadcasters Foundation, is the recipient of this year’s Lowry Mays Excellence in Broadcasting Award. The Award is bestowed annually on an individual in broadcasting whose work exemplifiesBroadcasting - CBS Radio innovation, community service, advocacy, and entrepreneurship. Mason will be presented with the award at the Broadcasters Foundation Breakfast at the NAB Show on Wednesday, April 19 at the Wynn, Las Vegas. Mason comments, “I’m honored to be recognized by the Broadcasters Foundation, a charity that I believe in very much. I’ve been so fortunate in many ways, and the opportunity to support the Foundation’s mission as its chairman, was one way of giving back to this industry that has given me so much.” Current BFoA chairman Scott Herman says, “I worked with Dan for many years at CBS, and I am proud to call him a friend, colleague, and mentor. CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference), the annual national meeting of leading conservatives, is underway in the nation’s capital at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center. Beasley Media Group sports talk stations announce partnerships with Major League Soccer clubs. KDKA-AM, Pittsburgh Presented with World Radio Day Award

On Tuesday (2/14) the Academy of Radio Arts and Sciences of America officially bestowed the 2023 World Radio Day Award upon Audacy’s news/talk KDKA-AM, Pittsburgh. The honor is given annually to a station “that exemplifies the best attributes of the radio industry. Recipients may be large or small, commercial or non-commercial, located in any market, and broadcasting in any language. The jury looks for stations that demonstrate ideals of localism, audience reach, community service, effective use of new digital platforms, diversity in program content and staffing, as well as financial and ratings success.” World Radio Day was celebrated on February 13 in commemoration of the birth of United Nations Radio in 1946. This official international day was proclaimed in 2011 by the 36th UNESCO General Conference and adopted by the 67th United Nations General Assembly in 2012. Previous winners include Audacy’s all-news WINS, New York; Hofstra University’s WRHU-FM, Hempstead, New York; and the inaugural winner Hubbard Broadcasting’s all-news WTOP-FM, Washington, DC. Dave Elswick Renews with Salem’s “The Answer” in Little Rock

Talk host Dave Elswick tells TALKERS magazine that he’s signed a one-year contract extension with Salem Media Group to continue hosting the 7:00 am to 11:00 am program on KDXE-FM, Little Rock “101.1 FM TheFace - Glasses Answer.” Elswick notes that he’s beginning his 23rd year as a talk host in the Little Rock market. He says that with COVID protocols now in the rear-view mirror, he’s returning to hosting live broadcasts of the state legislature’s general session. Prior to joining Salem, Elswick served with iHeartMedia at crosstown news/talk KARN-FM.

WSJS, Winston-Salem Dealing with Effects of Tower Vandalism

According to a report from WXII-TV, Winston-Salem, Truth Broadcasting Corporation’s news/talk/sports WSJS-AM, Winston-Salem is off the air today (1/19) as it works to repair damage to three of its towers that’s taken place over the past five weeks. Truth Broadcasting owner Michael Carbone tells WXII-TV that when theSource For Sports - Logo first tower was damaged, they thought bad weather was the culprit. But, after the second tower was affected, they realized that it was intentional and done by someone who knew what they were doing. The report states that after the second tower was damaged “Truth Broadcasting then hired security, and then the morning after security left the third tower was damaged. Police say someone used a tool to cut through parts of the towers anchoring them to the ground. ‘The person who did this had a real good idea of what they were doing,’ Carbone said. ‘Because they picked the point that was the safest to do what they were going to do.’” Police continue to investigate but so far, they have not made any arrests. Carbone says they are working on another location for the WSJS transmitter and hope to return to the air in a few days.
