Fredericks Radio Network Now Airing on Five West Virginia Signals

The Fredericks Radio Network announces a deal that has its talk programming airing on three new stations (five signals altogether) in the state of West Virginia. The John Fredericks-owned Disruptor Radio, LLC enters into a Local Marketing Agreement with LHTC Media of West Virginia, Inc to air the network’s lineup on WGYE-FM, Mannington/W280FF, Morgantown; WMMN-AM, Fairmont/W239CM, Morgantown; and WHTI-FM, Salem-Clarksburg. The Fredericks Radio Network now airs on 18 signalsim from West Virginia to Georgia. The programming includes “The John Fredericks Show,” “The War Room with Steve Bannon,” Newsmax’s “Rob Carson Show,” and more. Fredericks states, “This West Virginia opportunity is key to our growth plan, as it dovetails nicely with our Pittsburgh footprint and reaches a very pro-populist, pro-America First and pro-Trump area of America. We are excited about offering listeners in West Virginia a choice from the stale, woke, and warmed over pablum served up every day by the corporatists and conservative Inc. bunch that regurgitate the FOX and RNC talking points of the day. Our lame and boring news/talk competition falls into one of four categories: weather on the fives and traffic on the eights, stock prices trading below fifty cents, stock de-listed off the big board, or George Soros buying up bankruptcy debt with a controlling stake to eventually take over the company and its programming.”

Radio Station in Kharkiv, Ukraine Shines as Informational and Psychological Lifeline for Beleaguered Population

As World Radio Day 2024 approaches (2/13), a radio station has emerged that is serving as what TALKERS founder Michael Harrison describes as “an informational and psychological lifeline for a beleaguered population being challenged daily for its very survival.” Over the past month, Ukraine’s second-largest city located a mere 24 miles from the Russian border has taken the brunt of the enemy’s missile campaign, which has killed and wounded dozens of people, blown up buildings and unnerved everyone. It’s an almost daily torment. To vent, Kharkiv’s residents have a dedicated outlet: Radio Boiling Over, a new FM station. In a thorough report published this weekend by The New York Times (1/20) written by correspondents Andrew E. KramerMaria Varenikova and Tyler Hicks, the situation is fully described and deserves the attention of broadcasters around the world.  Excerpt: “This is Boiling Over in the Morning,” Volodymyr Noskov, the host of the morning call-in show, said on a recent broadcast. “What are you boiling over about today?” In Kharkiv, a sprawling city of universities and factories, coping has taken many forms. Nearly two years into the war, the city is opening schools underground. Psychologists visit strike sites to calm residents. Plywood goes up immediately over blown-out windows. “Keep Calm and Carry On Studying,” reads a sign at the entrance to one university. Amid the carnage, Radio Boiling Over, which went on the air a year ago, is becoming one of the most popular local media outlets. It serves as a megaphone for the fears and frustrations that simmer within a population under near constant assault. Read the entire story here.

Report: “The Incredible Shrinking Podcast Industry”

A piece by Max Tani at Semafor looks at the ramifications of Apple’s September 2023 changes in reporting how many people listen to podcasts has dramatically affected the official listener numbers for many of the biggest podcasts. About Apple’s change, Tani writes, “The dominant podcasting platformim had begun switching off automatic downloads for users who haven’t listened to five episodes of a show in the last two weeks. But while few users noticed the shift, some of the biggest podcasts in the world saw their official listener numbers drop dramatically. Long-running shows that publish frequently were hit particularly hard. A user who listened to a show like The New York Times’ ‘The Daily’ a few times, subscribed, but stopped listening would continue to count as a download indefinitely. Even better under the old rules: For people who listened to a show, dropped off for a while, but started listening again later, Apple would automatically download every show in between. The arrangement drove big download numbers, a crucial metric for ad sales and a sign of the vast reach of podcasts as a medium.” Read the full story here.

Audacy and Creditors Agree on Extension of Grace Period

As Audacy continues to engage in discussions with its creditors with respect to potential alternatives regarding a restructuring of its outstanding indebtedness, the company gains an extension on the grace periods before defaulting. However, if lenders holding a majority of the outstanding obligations under the Credit Facility have notim received a substantially final form of agreement with respect to a consensual transaction relating to the Issuer’s funded indebtedness satisfactory to such lenders on or before December 15, 2023, the grace period extension expires after 45 calendar days. John Fredericks Media Network Launches on WENO-AM, Nashville

The John Fredericks Media Network is acquiring WENO-AM, Nashville from Broady Media Group. JFMN is operating the station under an LMA as the deal goes through the FCC approval process. JFMN rebrands the station “News/Talk AM 760 The Flame.” This addition to the JFMN portfolio comes on the heels of its pending acquisition of WCNS-AM, Latrobe and WXJX-AM, Apollo in Pennsylvania. Johnim Fredericks says, “As our stations in Philadelphia have thrived and shown stunning growth, we thought it was critical to bookend the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with Pittsburgh, giving us robust reach in both dense population centers. We offer listeners in Pittsburgh’s Westmoreland County and now Nashville, Tennessee an exciting news/talk alternative that breaths oxygen into a stale and boring ring of warmed-over RINO syndicated hosts on the conservative news/talk syndication circuit. Our Nashville acquisition gives us a base of operations in the Mid-South as we expand along the spine of the Atlantic Coast. Nashville is a high-growth city and an important cultural center of our movement. We will be competing there with the biggest talk station conglomerates in the nation, including Cumulus and iHeart. We will offer Nashville listeners a dynamic alternative choice.

NYTimes: Radio Preferred Medium for Many in India

A piece in The New York Times by Karan Deep Singh that explores how radio is used by women in rural India to learn and to communicate shows just how important the medium is to many people in the world’s most populous country. The piece focuses on the community radio station “Alfaz-e-Mewat,” – the voice of the Mewati people. Singh notes that “even in a digital era, radio remains the preferred medium for millions of Indians.” Of the radio station he writes, “Its listeners are the million or so people of Nuh, a rural, agrarian district in the foothills of the Aravali mountains in the northern Indian state of Haryana. In this region — which has some of the country’s lowest female literacy rates, where early marriages are common and where violence against women is the norm — the station is the voice of change.” TALKERS founder Michael Harrison, who was recently appointed by UNESCO as executive advisor to the United Nations celebration of World Radio Day on February 13, 2024, states, “This story illustrates just how important the medium of on-air radio is to millions of people around the world. Defendants’ new venture does not compete with Plaintiff, and their words and actions have complied with the restrictive covenants of their employment contracts despite, as will be shown below, almost all of those covenants are illegal restrictions on Defendants’ rights under the National Labor Relations Act.” Mediation has been set for August 22.

TALKERS 2023 Heavy Hundred is Published

The TALKERS magazine editorial board announces that the 2023 edition of its annual feature the 100 Most Important Radio Talk Show Hosts in America – also known as the Heavy Hundred – is now posted. This annual ranking of talk radio hosts is undertaken by TALKERS editors, with input from industry leaders, and is based on a combination of hard and soft factors including courage, effort, impact, longevity, potential, ratings, recognition, revenue, service, talent, and uniqueness. It is as much subjective art as mathematical science and intended to be a dimensional snapshot of the national talk radio industry at this given moment with an emphasis on the news/talk format.  Candidates for the Heavy Hundred must be working a regularly scheduled professional show on the air at a minimum of one terrestrial or satellite radio station at the time of publication. TALKERS magazine executive editor Kevin Casey says, “This feature remains one of the most challenging undertakings for the editors. There are so many quality talk radio hosts working at stations in major markets all the way down to the smallest outlets serving intimate communities. Winnowing that field to the ‘100 most important’ is very difficult, but it is a challenge we take very seriously. We’re excited to publish this year’s Heavy Hundred and to congratulate those fine hosts who’ve made the list.” See the 2023 Heavy Hundred here.
