John Zacherle Passes at 98.  Iconic television and radio personality John Zacherle – most famous for his “Roland” character who hosted WCAU-TV, Philadelphia’s “Shock Theater” in the 1950s and as “Zacherley the Cool Ghoul” on WABC-TV, New York in the 1960s – died on Thursday (10/27) at age 98.  Zacherle also worked in film zacherleyas an actor but was known to New Yorkers as well for his time on the radio at rock outlets WNEW-FM and WPLJ.  TALKERS/RadioInfo publisher Michael Harrison comments, “John Zacherle was an important pioneer of progressive rock radio back in New York in the 1970s, first at WNEW-FM – where I had the honor of briefly working with him when I was a young DJ there in 1971 – and then for 10 years at crosstown rival WPLJ.  However, I must say he made an extraordinary impact on me and most of my friends much earlier – back in the 1960s when he hosted the campy ‘Shock Theater’ horror movie program on WABC-TV Channel 7.  He was quirky and unpredictable.  Even when he mumbled, he was pure fun.  I loved his character as a kid – which made meeting and knowing him later, as a radio colleague, a really big deal.  He was a true one-of-a-kind media personality and holds a special place in my heart.”
