Fireworks at SirusXM – Anthony Cumia of Opie & Anthony Let Go for Twitter Comments.  Talk show host Anthony Cumia has been fired by SiriusXM Satellite Radio for comments he made earlier this week on Twitter regarding an altercation he had with a black woman in New York City’s Times Square that has escalated on the internet into a racial issue. He reportedly called the woman “an animal” and a “pig” accusing her of punching him in the face as he was taking a photo. Cumia is one-half of the long-running and historically controversial team of Opie & Anthony.  O&A, like Howard Stern, were high-profile practitioners of the so-called “shock jock” genre of talk radio that left terrestrial radio and its FCC regulatory restraints years ago to find more artistic freedom offered by the satellite broadcaster.  Obviously “freedom” on big-time platforms, FCC-regulated or not, only goes so far… especially in matters of race relations. Sirius XM released the following official statement:  “SiriusXM has terminated its relationship with Anthony Cumia of the Opie & Anthony channel. The decision was made, and Cumia informed, late Thursday, July 3, after careful consideration of his racially charged and hate-filled remarks on social media. Those remarks and postings are abhorrent to SiriusXM, and his behavior is wholly inconsistent with what SiriusXM represents.”  Anthony has since taken to Twitter accusing Sirius XM of “caving in” and infringing upon his freedom, punishing him for something expressed in a different medium and for doing something that is not illegal.  His remarks about about Sirius XM include several expletives.  Stand by.  This story will obviously be developing with more details arriving soon. Latest details on Monday.
