Video Thrilled the Radio Star. Something radio people seldom, if ever, worried about has rapidly become an extremely potent arrow in their stations’ proverbial quivers. In varying degrees, programmers and on-air talent are becoming increasingly more knowledgeable about –– and adept at integrating –– video components on station and individual websites. TALKERS special features correspondent Mike Kinosian explores the video strategies of some of the industry’s leading talk personalities as they discuss target demos, video quality, product placement, the concept of “radio on video,” relevance and more. KFI, Los Angeles Hosts John & Ken Targets of Hispanic Organizations. Several Southern California-based Hispanic organizations want KFI’s John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou off the air after one activist’s cell phone number was given out over the air. The Los Angeles Times reports immigrant rights activist Jorge-Mario Cabrera is leading the charge after the duo gave his cell and office numbers out over the air and suggested listeners call him to express how they feel about his support for the California bill that would create state tuition assistance for illegal immigrants. Cabrera reports receiving as many as 400 phone calls, many filled with coarse, hateful language. KFI program director Robin Bertolucci wouldn’t comment to the Times but says she’ll meet with representatives of the activist groups. The groups have sent letters to Clear Channel corporate and local management requesting the John & Ken show be taken off the air. That’s not likely to happen but this incident illustrates the heated nature of immigration topics on Southern California talk radio. This is a topic that will be addressed at the coming Los Angeles Regional Talkers Forum in L.A. on October 20 presented by TALKERS in cooperation with the L.A. Press Club.
Dial Global’s Michael Smerconish Scores Interview with President Obama. Nationally syndicated talk show host Michael Smerconish will broadcast an interview with President Obama on his Dial Global program today at approximately 1:40 pm ET. Smerconish, an independent conservative, has interviewed the president five times before. He has obviously established a good rapport with the White House as a fair interviewer. Needless to say, as sitting presidents don’t often do interviews with talk radio hosts, this is a coup for Smerconish.
